[Elecraft] WTB P3SVGA Board

2021-07-31 Thread Mike via Elecraft
I understand Elecraft no longer sells the P3SVGA Board for the K3/K3s. I'm
looking for the board and associated cabling for a K3 if anyone has one they
would be willing to part with.

Thanks,Mike KD8RQE

[Elecraft] Kpod data cable

2018-02-06 Thread Mike via Elecraft
I seem to have misplaced the data cable that connects the Kpod to my K3. Is
this any kind of standard cable or do I need to get a new one from Elecraft?
Thanks.

Look on page 19 of the owner's manual. If you use just any standard
cable you can watch your VFO drift off frequency while you're in a QSO.

Directions are provided for making your own.

Re: [Elecraft] kxpd3 question

2017-11-09 Thread Mike via Elecraft
Hi Jerry,

I made the decision to use a single lever paddle and not learn the
"squeeze" technique needed to run a dual lever paddle. Several reasons:

The truly high speed guys use single lever paddles--they feel they make
fewer mistakes with the single lever.

If you learn the single lever technique you can use a dual lever paddle and
 just not "squeeze"

The dual lever technique doesn't save that much time.

I think that a lot of the impetus to a dual lever is "CQ", both letters are
"squeeze" letters and if you are sending it a lot it is easier to send
repeated CQ's with a dual lever paddle.

I think regular practice is needed with both single an dual lever paddles.

I am fond of my Begali Sculpture single lever, along with my Tony Baleno
single lever.

If you go single lever, if you occasionally use a dual lever paddle you
will be happier with minimal space between the paddles; it's closer to the
distance your fingers need to move for the single lever. Begali's Magnum has
a very narrow space and I use it as well as my Sculpture single lever.
Tony Baleno of N3ZN keys will make a dual lever with what ever spacing between
 the paddles you want.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

signed up to a course by CWops.

They require a paddle for sending practice since lessons will be done at
20-wpm.

Having researched the topic of 'paddles' and from that effort, I think
that a single paddle might work best for me.

Here are the negative items which helped form that opinion:

1. a comment that regular practice is needed to maintain competence with a
 dual-paddle,

2. iambic-a or iambic-b just seem physically complicated.

In reading my KX3-manual and Fred-KE7X's book, it seems to me that the
KXPD3 is capable of only dual-paddle operating. Or have I missed something?

I understand that my KX3 has a second port for an external key (I presume
a single-paddle).

In the past, I recall seeing photos of hams working KX3-portable with a
straight-key but, at those times, I did not pay attention if any had a paddle.

TIA for any reply.

Re: [Elecraft] KLPA3A power transistor thermal stress concerns

2017-10-24 Thread Mike via Elecraft
The K3/100 switches to the KPA3A at 12 watts. So is there a 2w range
(10-12w) where the KLPA3A is putting out unacceptable IMD? Is there a way to
make the switch at 10w, or should we just avoid that 2w "danger zone"?

[Elecraft] KX3: Roofing filter behavior

2017-09-27 Thread Mike via Elecraft
Hi,
It is written in the manual (p. 39) that:
"Roofing Filter Configuration for SSB Mode: Roofing filter FL2 (3 kHz) can be
inserted when the upper edge of the receive passband reaches either 2.4 kHz
(default value) or 2.9 kHz. When the passband edge is higher than this, FL1 is
used (wide filter). (If no KXFL1 is installed, FL1 is always used.)"
Indeed, when I set it to 2.9kHz the FL2 switches exactly at that point. But
when I set it to 2.4kHz, the FL2 switches at 1.7kHz. I made a video clip
showing that: https://youtu.be/bh3xZxrxhko.
Is there any explanation?
Thanks,Mike AB3VN

1. Separate power supply or small control box (ala ACOM 2000A). Same
form factor as K line if separate power supply (small control box able to
control an integral or separate "KAT1500" as well).
2. Solid state.
3. Full integration with K line similar to KPA500 and easy integration
with other radios including KX3 & KX2.
4. 160-6m.
5. 1500 W.
6. True SO2R capable with K line and other radios (SPE 1.3K is almost
there).
7. Integral antenna tuner or "KAT1500".
8. Easily user modified to get rid of antiquated 15db gain limit.
9. Clean TX throughout entire power range on a par with K3s.
10. Easily remotable.
11. QSK with adjustable parameters.

Introducing the Elecraft KX2 transceiver -- the newest member of our
compact KX Line. The KX2 has features very similar to the KX3, at about half
the
size and weight. It fits easily in a jacket pocket. It can even be used
hand-held, with a built-in mic to facilitate HT-style operation.

Despite its small size (1.5 x 2.8 x 5.8") and light weight (13 oz.), the
KX2 can be configured as a complete HF station, with an internal 2.6 Ah
Li-ion battery, wide-range ATU, and attached CW keyer paddle. This greatly
reduces the amount of gear and cables needed for field outings. For home and
mobile use, the KX2 works with our KXPA100 100 watt amplifier.

The KX2 can transmit in SSB, CW, and data modes at up to 10 watts. This
power level, combined with adjustable speech compression, yields a truly
effective SSB radio that fits in the palm of your hand.

True SDR (software-defined radio) technology, with 32-bit I.F. DSP.,
provides features you'd expect to find only in a desktop rig: stereo dual
watch,
noise blanking, noise reduction, auto-notch, 8-band RX/TX EQ, a digital
voice recorder with two transmit messages, and PSK31/PSK63/RTTY text
decode/display. You can even use a keyer paddle to transmit in these data
modes --
no PC required.

The KX2 covers 80-10 meters (9 bands), maximizing flexibility for field
ops, SOTA, micro-DXpeditions, and ultralight hiking/backpacking. Two padded
carrying case options are available (CS40 and CS60).

[Elecraft] Learning CW

2014-05-27 Thread Mike via Elecraft
I have wanted to learn CW and be a ham since I was 8. I started and
stopped 5 or 10 times in the next 52 years. I was finally licensed in Feb
2012
as a General and upgraded to Extra 6 months later, but I was old school
enough to not consider myself a true ham until I could do CW, so I taught
myself over a 3 month period and made my 1st CW QSO in Feb 2013. Paul N6EV,

SKCC were a big help. I now have 250 countries worked, 204 confirmed on
CW, almost all with a straight key @ 15-18 wpm. Most operators have been
willing to QRS for me, some not. I just within the last 3 weeks transitioned
to a paddle, and make too many mistakes, but most have been kind and
forgiving. I use G4FON's free software and practice sending to a Begali CW
Machine which is excellent and relentlessly unforgiving of mistakes. I just
finished CW Academy level 2 class with Cap W0CCA. I highly recommend both
SKCC and CW Academy, but CW Academy is booking 6-12 months in advance. It can
be done, even with an old fart (62) like me. I feel like a kid again,
realizing a 52 year old dream.

Mandatory Elecraft content: I have a K3 #7588.
