[Elecraft] Possible trade?
Thought I would see if anyone would be interested in a trade involving my KX2 toward a KX3 with some boot on my side. My KX2 has the tuner, mic and RTC board as well as 2 batteries and charger. Box, manual and power cord. I would want the KX3 to have the tuner, filter and charger/clock board. I have found the KX2 to work superb for my RV operation, I would just like to have 160 and 6 meters. If anyone has any interest let me know what you have and we can go from there, the KX2 looks and works perfectly. [Elecraft] P3 display hanging
I have a K3/P3(w/SVGA) connected to DXLabs Commander and the P3 display hangs from time to time. By hang, I mean it just freezes for a second or two periodically then starts working again by itself, I do not have to do anything to restart it. It seems to be connected to Commanders polling the K3 because if I turn off continuous interrogation it doesn't hang up like it does with it on. Of course that may be just masking another problem, I don't know. I have used a K3/P3 (w/SVGA)combination previously with Commander and I don't recall noticing this issue. I have the baud rates set correctly and the latest firmware in both the K3 and P3. I have experimented with the command polling interval but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm sure it's most likely some parameter I have not configured correctly. If someone has come across this previously please email me off list as this is most likely not a problem with DXlab or the K3/P3, but it is something I don't have configured correctly either in DXlab or the K3/P3 so I don't want to clutter up the group. I've searched the archives and documentation but don't see anything glaringly wrong with my setup. [Elecraft] K2 160 meter issue??
I just bought a K2/10 that I knew had a problem on 160 before I got it and now am looking for some help or if anyone has run across similar symptoms before. 1. The radio works perfectly on 80-10 meters full power output and good sensitivity (serial number 41XX) 2. Using the BAND +/- buttons to go to 160 meters will sometimes result in good sensitivity on 160 indicated by band noise, etc, depending on how long it has been since the band switch was on 160. 3. with the power to 5 watts or higher, doesn't matter) the power output will be about 1 to 2 watts when holding the TUNE button. However the power gradually drops to almost zero in a short time, just a matter of seconds. 4. when the sensitivity is good on 160 (as indicated in 1 above), just leaving the radio alone and not touching anything, the sensitivity slowly drops off until nothing is heard from the speaker, just like someone turned the RF gain back 5. basically it seems like 160 function works on either TX or RX until something heats up or some time related action takes place and 160 just dies. 6. another part of the puzzle. When the sensitivity drops off on 160, if I turn the frequency somewhere below 1.800 khz the sensitivity returns, and then when I go back up above 1.800 khz it immediately drops off again.. I've removed the cover and unplugged the 160 module, looked it over and reheated all the connections on it. Nothing seems amiss there. I tried tuning L3 and L4 and it doesn't seem to have any affect on the power output ( in the short time I have to check before it drops off completely) Any ideas.. Whatever the problem is, it appears to be related to both TX and RX and only affects 160, no other bands or functions are affected. Thanks for any help or ideas.. I have a Elecraft KX3 that I recently bought but my plans have changed so I am selling it to help fund other purchases. It is about 2 months old and is in perfect condition electrically and physically. From a non smoking environment. It was assembled from a kit by an experienced Elecraft Kit builder in Nov 2012 and easily meets the specs for power output as per the manual 10 watts on 160-15 and 8 watts on 12-6 meters. It has the optional band pass filter, battery charger unit, Hand Microphone, accessory cable kit, power cord with power pole connector, and also 8 Rayovac 2100 mah niMH batteries. also all manuals, etc. There is NO Tuner in it. Just looked over the KAT500 manual and it appears from first glance that it will not operate using a qrp power levels. Given the track record of the current Elecraft tuners, I was very hopeful that it would so I could utilize the antenna switching and superior tuning capabilities of the Elecraft design in an automatic tuner. Maybe someone in the know can chime in and give a definitive answer as to if it will operate reliably using low power in the range of 3 to 4 watts. Keeping my fingers crossed.. Thanks Eric, appreciate the additional info, that does give me at least an option to be able to use it. At the present I do have higher power available for initial tuning, but am contemplating going strictly qrp so that option may not be available if I did depending on the rig of choice. I have always been impressed by the K2, K3 and KX3 internal tuners ability to reliably tune my all band ladder line fed antenna on 160-10 meters and would like the same matching capability in an external tuner auto tuner. Haven't had much luck in finding an external auto tuner that would do what the Elecraft internal tuners will do. It works fine, my confusion stemmed from the description in the KX3 manual which described the tip, ring, sleeve connections and then looking at a standard DB9 TXD/RXD pinout it made me think pins 2 and 3 were reversed, in actuality it's just looking at the data flow from different devices. [Elecraft] An alternate option for K3 main tuning knob
There has been a lot of discussion about the pro's and con's of changing the original size, weight, etc of the main tuning knob on the K3. I think it is perfectly fine as is, but in true ham fashion many like to tinker with what most think is already about as good as it gets. I ran across an option that may or may not have been mentioned on here previously but I am using a black optional trim ring sold by Ten Tec for their Orion (and others) radio. It fits perfectly over the existing K3 main knob and adds some extra grip and size and to me also looks real nice. I had a spare here from an Orion I owned and decided to give it a try and I like the end result. I bought a K2/100 but really just wanted a K2, but this had everything else I wanted except it had the KPA100. I would like to trade the KPA100 module for a K2 top cover with the tuner and battery + cash. K3/100 kit sn 6150 arrived yesterday just in time for the weekend. Took my time today and it went together in about 8 hours, with no significant issues. Everything worked according to the manual as I expected. There is one issue that is somewhat irritating though. The AF and RF knobs cannot be nested as they should be to fit properly. In order to be able to turn the AF gain or RF gain without having them catch on the larger respective SUB knobs they have to be pulled out so they won't catch. They are visibly out of alignment. A quick search of the archives revealed a rather long 2 /1/2 year old thread about some defective knobs. The gist of the thread was not so much about them cracking or breaking as some had experienced, it was because they were off center and would not allow for a proper installation. Apparently whatever the issue was, it is still there 2 1/2 years later as the one I received yesterday has the same problem. It's hard to understand how a product can be so well designed and the manufacturing tolerances so close (take the cabinet parts and pieces as one example) but yet something as seemingly simple as a plastic knob some 2 1/2 years after an in-depth discussion that Elecraft was part of are still being manufactured and delivered out of tolerance. I don't have a problem with the intended look or feel of the knobs, I think they are fine, just the fact they turn out so badly in many cases and detract from the end product. I was having a lot of fun putting this together today until I got to the part where I installed the knobs, big disappointment! I have a set of the Mouser machined aluminum knobs and although they are smooth and have a nice feel they just don't match the rest of the knobs to my liking, I wonder if anyone has come up with an alternative to the Mouser knobs? [Elecraft] KPA-500 Amazing!!
KPA500 #618 arrived yesterday afternoon, I put it together this morning and got it on line with no problems. It went together like a charm and it works great. I am amazed at how well it works and how quiet it is, the silent QSK is a thing of beauty. Only thing left to do it set up the per band power levels so I can have it operate at about 250 watts when on and the K3 by itself at about 75 when off. I *think* this can be set up to automatically set the K3 to about 10-15 watts to give me about 250 out and then revert back to 75 when the amp is off.. I bought the AUX cable set to go with it. Probably should read the book. :) Now for the KAT500 Merry Christmas to all... [Elecraft] Loose KIO3 I/O Module?
Hi, I just purchased an K3 from another ham and noticed when I was hooking things up that the KIO3 I/O module seems to be very loose. ( the plug-in jacks move up and down quite a bit and are very loose). Is this a normal condition? There doesn't appear to be any support for this module other than the friction fit of the pins plugging into the KIO3 mother board. I haven't noticed any abnormal operation, I was just curious if this is normal after the K3 has been used a while, (this one is about 18 months old) or something that I should look into further. Have decided to sell my K2 station and go a different route. It is in very good condition, both electrically and physically, non smoking environment. Elecraft K2, serial number 2295. Has the latest firmware (2.04P/1.09) and the following options. 100W PA (separate enclosure) SSB 160 meter Noise Blanker Audio Filter (analog, not DSP) 20 watt Tuner 100 W Tuner (separate enclosure) RS232 option Battery option MH2 mic Yaesu main tuning knob External speaker in Elecraft enclosure ( same size as the K2 case, with audio amp like what is on the Elecraft site) The radio is set up for QRP/QRO with the 20 watt tuner/battery and RS232 in the QRP cover. The 100 Watt PA and 100 watt Tuner is in an external Elecraft enclosure. The external Speaker is in another Elecraft Enclosure with an audio amp. All interconnecting cables, power cords and manuals included. This is a very nice setup and it works extremely well. It does have a varying power output when using the external amp. When it is key down, the power may vary 10-15 watts depending on the band. It has no effect on the actual operation. This is well documented in the Elecraft archives and there is a mod to change the value of R98 in the K2 to help settle this down, but I didn't find it necessary. Will sell the entire package for $895 plus shipping + insurance. US Postal money order or PayPal (with 3.5% fee). Can send pictures if needed.
