Re: [Elecraft] Kx3 and fldigi

2016-03-19 Thread W Paul Mills
Have you loaded KX3.xml needed for RigCat? Get it at
<https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/xmls/elecraft/KX3.xml/download>.
Also read the notes at the top of the KX3.xml file.(Can be opened with a
text editor.)

You may also want to try to control via flrig. You will need to read the
fldigi manual on how to set this up.

Latest files for fldigi are at:
<https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/fldigi/>

Latest files for flrig are at:
<https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/flrig/>

Chose the appropriate file for your operating system. Manuals are
available in the same directories.

Mentor assistance is available on the following Yahoo groups:

  * linuxham - primarily for Linux and OS X users
  * NBEMSham - support for using the entire suite in an EMCOMM environment
all operating systems
  * winfldigi - for users on Windows OS.

Hope something here will help get you going.

Re: [Elecraft] Unsoldering

2016-02-20 Thread W Paul Mills
I used solder pooling 40 years ago to remove round 10 lead IC's from the
crowded Motorola HT-220's. Worked great with good technique. Technique
was to dribble it on, until touching all leads, then dip iron in puddle,
and quickly pull. Clean up was easy with a solder sucker.

Chip-Quick is great, because it melts at a low temp. But be careful, if
not careful, it can go 'everywhere'! Been there, done that!

Re: [Elecraft] RF problem Serial to Serial cable with built-in chokes

You might want to try optical isolation instead.
A couple of sources:

I'm having problems with RF getting into my computer and locking
it up. I'm suspecting the Serial to Serial cable between the CPU
and the K3. I've tried different serial cables, different
computers, tried snap on chokes from Radio Shack, tied all
equipment into a common ground... all without any benefit. (my
antennas have low SWR's and I don't use an Antenna Tuner).

If a serial to serial cable with built-in chokes is unavailable,
should I expect much better results from snap on Fair-Rite chokes
 over Radio Shack chokes?

Perhaps I missed it, but I am thinking we would rather have a
simple GUI with easier commands? I for one have no clue for
programming but use Ubuntu and shorter versions of Linux which
don't require the programming language which leaves me in a lurch.
There is so much to know, so little time. Let the devotees do the
GUI for the mere mortals to use. I use Puppy off a USB stick and
it is so simple... just like me. NOT. :=#
