[Elecraft] Legendary Elecraft Service - not!

2011-06-07 Thread Paul Saville
Having purchased amateur radio stuff from 20 or so different suppliers,
I am surprised to have to report that, after a recent order, Elecraft
has become only the second with which I am not completely satisfied (the
first being Andrews Communications in Sydney.) It appears the legendary
Elecraft service has become a casualty of the rapid growth of the company.

Perhaps I will have to revert to Icomism!

Also, this list has changed over time and is now less relevant to my
interests, so I intend to unsubscribe. I want to say thank you to the
Ron's, Don's and others (and especially Ron ZL1TW SK) who have been
immensely helpful on this list over the years.

Re: [Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs

2011-06-03 Thread Paul Saville
Sending radios to ZL is fairly safe, because most of the mail workers
can't read, and the stagecoach that carries the mail has a guy with a
six-shooter to fight off the bandits, so the loss rate is zero.

It's a different story with anything containing drugs or porno
though, because that is still considered contraband, except in The
Netherlands.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Replacing tuning knob with one from Ten-Tec

2011-05-26 Thread Paul Saville
I have a heavy-ish 73crc knob on my K2, and I prefer the feel with the
felt washer completely removed. It doesn't drift when bumped although it
could be that I have an especially stiff encoder. The finger dimple is
too small for my stubby finger, so I stuck an Elecraft-supplied finger
dimple over the top, making it a bit of a Frankenstein knob. So far the
encoder shaft remains unbent, touch wood.

On 27/05/2011 11:13 a.m., Don Wilhelm wrote:
I cannot say for certain because I have not seen the knob.
I do have a concern for knobs that are heavy and do not fit properly
 against the felt washer.
For one thing, the heavier knob spaced out from the front panel will put
extra downward stress on the encoder shaft - that is canceled out if the
new knob is in full contact with the felt washer. A bent encoder shaft
 will create binds when tuning.
Secondly, a knob with no slight friction will allow the VFO to drift
when you tap on the operating table or just breathe on the knob. You
must have some friction on the knob for the VFO to be stable.

It amuses us in Metric World to pretend we don't understand non-metric
thread sizes. Fact is I still have AF, Whitworth and metric wrench and
socket sets in the workshop. The metrics get used the most though. The
only time I get caught out is with left-hand threaded parts, because I
don't have a full set of left-handed wrenches.

Most of the auto industry is now metric, but for small hardware, the

we are to have a complete set.

Re: [Elecraft] Aid to Japan

2011-03-15 Thread Paul Saville
My apologies in advance for an off-topic reply to an off-topic post.

Having been through a relatively minor disaster myself, I can report
that neither the Salvation Army nor the Red Cross provided a
particularly useful, if any, contribution to the emergency response
effort, although both began touting for donations within days of the
event. Granted they do provide valuable welfare assistance in
non-emergency times.

Here's my list of proven useful people organizations for disaster
response:

1. Fire Dept, Medical personnel, Police Military (including Urban
Search Rescue teams from VK, Japan, China, Taiwan, UK, USA and maybe
elsewhere)

2. The utility workers who got the power water supplies working (the
most undervalued group in my opinion)

3. Ad-hoc community groups who distributed hot food and drinkable water,
and helped by making a start with the damage cleanup.

4. Amateur Radio Emergency Communicators, and the hams who worked to
keep the local VHF/UHF repeaters operational.

The best way for hams to help is to increase your own preparedness for
providing emergency communications, and to contribute time, expertise
and/or donations to amateur radio emergency communications organizations.

Re: [Elecraft] ZL Earthquake

2011-02-27 Thread Paul Saville
We had some damage here Fred, but the houses in the local area are
mostly still habitable. Across town came off much worst by all accounts.
The electricity is back on now, and we get an occasional trickle of
water from the tap, to be boiled for drinking.

Things to improve for the next time:

- 50 litres drinking water is only just sufficient for a family of five.
I'm going to increase the stash to 200 litres (about 50 gallons) or more.

- Battery capacity in the shack was one 7 A/H gel battery, and about 20
AA cells. Too little to be of any use in an emergency. I'm thinking 200
A/H minimum plus a portable generator would be more appropriate. I will
also set up the shack to run off 12V battery supply all the time,
including shack computer, so it's always ready to go. The rotator might
be a little tricky in that regard being 24VAC.

- Candles are a no-go in an earthquake because they fall over when there
is an aftershock. Flashlights are inconvenient as a working light, so
I am looking at LED lamps, bolted to the wall or desk so they stay put.

Maybe I'm suffering an attack of siege mentality, but once bitten, twice
shy.

Wish list: I nice hot shower - luxury!

[Elecraft] OT: MS Updates

2006-02-25 Thread Paul Saville
Hello Fred,

The updates issued by Microsoft fix security flaws and other
bugs in Windows. It is more safe to install them than not
to. It is also best to install them as soon as possible
after they are released by Microsoft, because computer
criminals often use the information in the security update
to figure out how to attack computers that haven't had the
update applied.

In the XP start menu select Control Panel, then click Switch
to Classic View in the left-hand panel, then select
Automatic Updates. The Automatic Updates page allows you to
turn automatic updates off, and also has a link to the
Windows Update website so you can get updates manually. Once
you are comfortable with the concept, I recommend leaving
Automatic Updates turned on.

I will respond via the reflector in the hope that this
information is useful to some other list members.

Regards, Paul ZL3IN

Anyone know how safe these automatic Windoze
updates my computer wants to do are? This
would be a GREAT one to respond to directly
 and not on the reflector!

Re: [Elecraft] Safe way to remove excess flux?

2005-11-19 Thread Paul Saville
Use 100% Isopropanol (Isopropyl Alcohol). Get a 1/2 inch
paint brush, the sort you would use for trimming around
window frames etc, and cut the bristles back to about half
length to stiffen it up a bit. Dip the brush in the alcohol
then scrub a small area of the circuit board for about 20
seconds, then dab dry with an absorbent cloth. I have never
damaged any boards this way, but it's not particularly
safe because Isopropanol is highly flammable, so do it
outside and away from sources of ignition. Also the chaps at
Elecraft don't approve of cleaning boards at all, but I
won't tell if you don't.

If your MCU FW is older than 2.02A, the KPA100 comes with free MCU and IOC

But wait, there's more!

If your KSB2 FW is older than 1.06, you also get a free KSB2 FW upgrade

[Elecraft] Re: Transverters; New QST Review Link

2004-09-02 Thread Paul Saville
International membership of ARRL is available for US$39. For that price you get
QST, QEX and NCJ electronic copies on an annual CD plus access to the
members-only web site. There is a wealth of information available there, and it
is well worth it in my opinion. Getting hardcopy QST mailed out bumps the cost
to about US$65 which is a bit less attractive. My local library subscribes to
QST, so I wander in there when I get a craving for good old fashioned
ink-on-paper.

Is there any chance that the QST review for the
Transverters can be made available from the Elecraft
web page like some of the other QST revews are?

Not being a member of the ARRL (but of the RSGB),
its a little frustrating to know that these exist
 but cannot read them!
