great reviews from those who have it.

All well and good in an ideal situation, but knowing the area that Eric
lives in (Silicon Valley) there are all sorts of "alternatives" that may
be available but in reality are vendors based on getting service (as it
is popularly called "bandwidth") from Comcast and/or Verizon "behind the
curtain".

Up here (suburban Portland) I did lots of research on features, service
and reliability before settling on the Comcast bundle of internet, voice
phone, and Xfinity cable. Living in an already-wired apartment I didn't
have much of a choice. I was fortunate enough to talk the management
into letting me put up my VHF/UHF j-poles - I didn't want to press my
luck by having more wire/cable run in.

I had (where did I put it?) the direct phone number of the regional
service manager but fortunately never had to use it. My one and only
problem was resolved locally to my satisfaction the first time without
"sturm und drang".

In sum - you get what you pay for.

I second what Jim Brown posted earlier. It's a problem of front-end

reacting to them.

As an engineer and attorney assisting amateurs who have to deal with
those problems, I advise strongly to not make any modifications to the
neighbors' devices themselves. Offer advice such as the clamp-on
ferrite chokes or referral to the manufacturers of those devices. It's
THEIR problem. Offer to make a reasonable number of on-the-air tests of
your station as necessary to reveal the effectiveness (or non-) of any
remedial measures. Otherwise any any problems with the affected deices
will land on you.

Just some valuable advice.

any reason why I cannot place the coax and the #4 copper wire in the

For safety reasons it is advisable to separate the perimeter ground wire
from any "utility" cables, including antenna cables. I would dig the
trench to 12" or more, bury the ground wire, fill the trench halfway,
bury the antenna cable, put a layer of some bright-colored heavy plastic
over the cable (to identify it if necessary to dig it up again) and fill
the rest of the trench. Put marker stakes around the perimeter. If you
don't want to dig it by hand, rent a Ditch Witch. Do not forget to call
Locating Services (8-1-1) to mark buried utility pipes and lines on your
property before you dig - they are funded by the utilities.

Stuff I learned from my colleague Tom Croda (SK) who was the national
expert on communication site power and grounding.

Even after I was off the Board in a power play the antennas stayed there

had a 35 foot height restriction so at this point I'm planning a special use
permit or exemption and a building permit. I will start gathering info and the
tower and the beam for submittal and get back to you.

Thank you so much for offering to help.

Further info - Utah does not have a "by right" statute such as other
states have, specifying a height at or below which the jurisdiction
cannot restrict height. It does have a PRB-1 type statute that
requires local administrations to grant "reasonable accommodation" by
"least restrictive means" - which are legal terms that can vary amongst
jurisdictions. I am a great fan of getting those limits adopted, which
involvs hard work with legislatures. I don't know what your local
zoning codes specify, but in those cases where I have written or
reviewed local zoning codes, I have tried to get ham radio antennas
exempted from Conditional Use Permits or Special Variances by a process
called Administrative Permits that don't involve neighborhood hearings,
notifications and fees, especially if there's a "by right" statute.
Something that you need to check into.

If you are required to get a Conditional Use Permit or to apply for a
Variance and you need legal assistance - check out Kenneth D. Lougee,
K7AAO in Sandy, who like myself is an ARRL Volunteer Counsel but is
licensed in Utah. He is listed in the ARRL website for Volunteer

A building permit is a different kettle of fish. Cross that bridge
after the :Land Use permit business is settled.

Let me know how things go.

Re: [Elecraft] Speaker upgrade

2021-04-26 Thread Phil Kane

Really OT but where else can I ask and get good replies?

I am looking for a small mixer that will handle two inputs: the wired
low-level audio output from my computer as well as a blue-tooth
connection to my HT. I have a pair of small amplified speakers that do
a good job on the computer output. I can find several blue-tooth
"receivers" that would do that job except that they don't have a second
input. I'm not in any shape to build a mixer - it has to be plug-and-play.

Any ideas?

The audio feels like it's inside my head, and the aids' primary function

Batteries in the aids last about a week if disconnected while I sleep,

For a while, the FCC declined to take action against criminal (like

wasn't one of mine :) but I do remember that there have been several.
For other violators, there is a provision in the Communications Act that
requires the FCC to determine if the conviction bears on the moral
qualifications to become or remain an FCC license holder, and there are
provisions in other statutes that bar someone from holding or receiving
a license if in arrears to court-mandated payments..

As far as the present situation, what the notice said (in plain
language) is using a radio while planning or committing a crime is a
crime itself. Has nothing to do with the content as long as it does not
involve planning or committing that criminal act. Yes, there are limits

What I have been doing for already-constructed Zip-cord leads with APP

the APP housings at the other end, separate the parallel conductors, and
twist them together again one over the other as "DIY" twisted pair, then
remate the housings. Works fine albeit shortens the cable a bit.

The sealed batteries in the ones that we have are replaceable but the
cells within them are not. Experience with the "10-year" batteries is
that they start getting flaky at about 7-8 years, but the building
management is very cooperative about replacing them when they start

As others have posted, the convention was that Broadcast stations east
of the Mississippi were given W call letters and west of the Mississippi
were given K call letters (with noted exceptions). Ocean-going ships
had the opposite according to their home port of registration.

When I started doing ship safety radio inspections in 1967 there were
600+ such vessels in the US registry, not counting the WW-II-era Victory
ships that were owned by the U S Maritime Commission and were being
pulled out of "Red Lead Row" (deep storage Reserve Fleets) and operated
under contract to support the Vietnam War going on at that time. New
ship radiotelegraph stations will be licensed as part of the ship's
radio station license under the now-standard XXXnnnn call letters.

Tell me something that I don't know. In the 1950s (when I was first
licensed) my parents' dinette set was of the then-popular
chrome-and-vinyl construction, and every time I got up from the chair I
would get zapped in the back of my knees. Static electricity generated
by cloth sliding on the plastic. I cured the problem by touching a
table fork or spoon to the metal chair rung to discharge the spark. I
was under the impression that this was cured by switching to an
anti-static type of plastic or fabric some time ago.

It's "great" that all that time and brain power was spent on
rediscovering the wheel. Are chrome-and-vinyl dinette sets still being sold?

At the beginning of this discussion I was confusing "predistortion" with
"pre-emphasis" which in the FM broadcast field refers to the intentional
introduction of nonlinear audio frequency response of the transmission
chain, recovered by "de-emphasis" in the receivers. Now I understand
better what the discussion is all about.

Yet one of the "cures" of QRM from electrical lines is to wash the
insulators. Many large utilities have a specialized vehicle for that.
We have buried utilities here so there's no insulators to wash....

The Metric Conversion Act goes back to the Ford administration in 1974
(*). It is enforced slightly less than the Uniform Spitting on the
Sidewalk Act that predates it. The main reason that we see it at all in
the US is than manufacturers dealing in world-wide markets do not want
to have two different production lines,

* My Ford sedan is built to metric standards... :)

During my tenure, FCC rules and standards were rewritten to express
dimensions in metric, but the conversion from USCU wasn't smooth. For
instance, one specification for certain antenna heights was "20 feet
above ground". So what did the FCC do? Changed it to "6.1 meters (20
feet) above ground". Why not an even 6 meters?? Everyone still refers
to it as the "20 foot rule".

The neglected metric unit, although not past of the SI, is the gradian
(grad). 100 grads to a quadrant. 400 grads to a full circle. 1 grad =
0.9 degree. It is used mainly in European surveying, but since May 2020
is legal for use in the US.

In another life when I was with the San Francisco office of the FCC, I
used to refer IX calls to Pacific Gas & Electric in California and my
contact there was Jim Gillespie in General Construction. Jim was a
great help, and I used to kid him that if this was too much work for him
he could always go back to washing insulators! His counterpart at
Southern California Edison was also well-known as an IX-finder. We're
all retired from IX-chasing now and I wouldn't have any idea who to
refer such calls to today.

As Ken Brown (W2KB) has pointed out over the years, it's to the
advantage of the utility to find and fix such leaks (if that is the
problem) because it loses money to have energy delivered to a non-paying

I am a legal professional in the communications regulatory field having

amateur operation for a small Region 1 country as well as rules for
licensing and siting for antenna towers in several jurisdictions here in
the United States.

Sorry, Peter, every Administration has not only the right but the
obligation to set whatever standards for their country. The only way to
change that is to put pressure on that Administration to change through
whatever legal means are possible.

Radio amateurs do not have any special privilege to conduct themselves
except in conformance with whatever license and regulations the
Administration prescribes - right or wrong.

Some Administrations still license amateur operators to use a specific
transmitter at a specific location and under specific conditions. Many
don't but apparently the New Caledonia's Administration that Pierre is
dealing with still does.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong - I'm saying that's what it is.

[Elecraft] [K2] Alinco EMS-14 mic with K2?

2020-08-04 Thread Phil Kane

For the 15 or so years that I have used my K2 the mic I used was an
Adonis AM-308, a Kenwood-compatible desk mic. It gave me good service
but failed recently, and is no longer available. It was replaced with
the Alinco EMS-14 desk mic which appears to be a re-branded AM-308 (to
the point where the pc board in the mic base carries the "AM-308"
label). The cable pin-out on the 8-pin "Foster" connector is identical.
The only difference appears to be that the Adonis mic used two AA
batteries while the Alinco mic draws its power from the rig's +V on the
mic connector.

It should be plug-and-play compatible using the cables that worked with
the Adonis mic but unfortunately the mic does not activate the K2.

Does anyone have any experience using the Alinco EMS-14 mic?

That's a standard tool in the cable industry for installing and removing

I apologize to all - I did mis-speak. Just a good "past snug" is about

Sometimes the vendor refuses to send to a post office box. What works
then, at least in the USA, is to specify the street address plus the PO
Box as if it was an apartment number. I always get a laugh when UPS
refuses to accept the PO Box as a delivery address, but their Big Brown
Truck pulls up to the PO loading dock anyway.

This, of course, does not apply to items that the Postal Service will
not handle, such as batteries and corrosive liquids.

Don't forget to tighten the connector 1/4 turn after "finger tight" with

I've had to bail out my wife's Surface and my own Dell tower and laptop
over issues like this. It's a driver problem. Sometimes it needs an
updated driver (from ACES on your case) but sometimes all it takes is to
reinstall a fresh copy of the existing driver as if it never existed.

Using any Surface or laptop without a big screen is a pain. I just
up-sized to a 27" - the largest that would fir the geometry of my
operating position.

Let us know what happens, Ted.

My regular backup program is NovaBACKUP PC from NovaStor. It is a
commercial program that I have been using for many years on all my
computers, making a daily incremental backup and a weekly full backup
using external drives for storage of the compressed files. It has a GUI
that permits restoration (both overwrite and write elsewhere) of files
and folders. It has saved my backsplash several times in the recent
past. There is a linux version called NovaBACKUP Data Center that is
distro-independent. (No, I don't own stock in NovaStor.)

I recently had to replace my 6-year old failed monitor and I settled on
a 27" LG HD monitor (the largest size that could fit on the desk)
because I didn't need 4K. $159 at Costco. It was the next-to-last on

very fast because the work-at-home folks were realizing that a 15"
laptop screen just doesn't cut it for all-day use. No EMI that I can
detect by on-off testing (there's plenty from other nearby sources).

Another thing that we do is to bond all of the ground rods in an outside
ring which is buried in a trench filled with conductive concrete. A
layer of the concrete, than the ground ring, and then another layer of
that concrete. Expensive? You betcha, but cheap insurance for sites

Thank you for explaining that. For our commercial and public safety
communication site grounding systems our firm insists on cad-weld at all
exposed and buried connection points but I would suspect that very few
hams, let alone residential or even commercial electricians, would go to
that length. My mentor in that area, the late Tom Croda, who during his
lifetime was the national expert in comm site power and grounding, would
not settle for anything less.

What do you use to attach the ground wire(s) to the ground rod? Buckeyes?

Rescue Tape to the rescue. - also available from the
Amazing place.

Originally developed as a repair tape, it's stretchable, self-sealing,
high insulation rated, UV resistant, comes in several colors for easy
ID, and no residue when removed. I had several antenna feed points
wrapped with it and after 10+ years the connectors underneath were as
bright and shiny as they were when first installed.

Ah, but are they the same cell type and are they AGM or gel-cell, the
only type to use in standby communication battery service?

Of course the pressure should be at the design stage, not the retrofit
stage, but good luck getting that to happen. The first thing is to get
the manufacturer - or the industry as a whole - to admit that there's a
problem. Good luck on that one, too. We've fought that on the
susceptibility-to-unwanted-pickup aspect for decades with very spotty
results.

That was a decent price "a couple of years ago". It's gone up since
then. It's almost time to renew my Trojan 27AGM (75 AH) batts. We're
planning to move a year from now and I hope that the existing ones will
hold out until then. Makes swapping them easy (local pickup from the
wholesaler).

I've been using a loop on the porch of our ground level apartment. At
15 watts. It is useless - can't get it to tune properly and I often
think that I would have a better signal with my dummy load at 100 watts.
If you are getting good luck you must be doing something right. At
east you have the advantage of 34 stories - good for you.

2020-05-10 Thread Phil Kane
On 5/10/2020 8:14 AM, Gwen Patton wrote:

> I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Neither did I, but I am a lawyer who deals in this area.

Part 15 sets the minimum standard for RF emissions from devices that do
not require individual or blanket station licenses. If they don't
comply, they can't be used legally or be marketed (a "term of art" that
covers manufacture, sell, offer for sale, ship, modify, and in some
cases, use). Compliant devices must be certified by the manufacturer
and labeled as meeting those standards. There are certain exemptions
for home-brew ham equipment and school projects.

Regulatory law is clear - even if the emissions from a device comply
with the levels mandated in Part 15, if they cause harmful interference
(another "term of art") to licensed/authorized communications, the
operator of the Part 15 device is required to cease such operation until
the interference is abated.

Conversely, as many have noted, if the Part 15 device gets interfered
with by signals from a licenses/authorized station or device, it's
"tough". What part of "must accept" is not clear?

A good part of my early legal career was devoted to assisting and
defending hams against claims of interference to consumer-level
entertainment equipment. Much of that has gone away, because the
European Union has regulations about how such equipment must reject
outside signals and reputable manufacturers are adhering to those
standards if they want to sell in the worldwide market. The FCC has
kicked around establishing similar standards for decades with no action,
relying on the broad "must accept" to protect the public.

When is the last time that we here have had to deal with a substantial
claim of causing TVI ("Tennessee Valley Indians)? Not since I have been
running my K2.
