[Elecraft] Adding KIO3B

2017-12-23 Thread Phil Zminda
My K3/100, S/N 4385, is at Elecraft for repairs. Since it is at Elecraft and
will be at least partly disassembled, is it worth considering the addition of
the KIO3B, while it’s being worked on? I already have the upgraded synthesizer
and have added the KRX3A, also with the upgraded synthesizer. Will this get me
fairly close to the specs of a K3S? I already have the filters I need and the
internal ATU.

The unit has been accepted at Elecraft but I don’t believe any work has started
yet.

Thanks,

Phil N3ZP

[Elecraft] K3 intermittent transmit power

2017-11-29 Thread Phil Zminda
My K3 -100 S/N 4385 has developed an intermittent transmit problem on CW. I
operate very little SSB so can’t say if it happens on SSB. It seems that the
transmit power as seen on the meter display drops to 0 on a character and then
goes up to 100, even when running at 40 watts driving my amplifier, an ALS-600,
modified with QSK. At first I blamed the amp and did check it out thoroughly,
but see the problem even without it. I have checked all my coax connections,
the amp keying keying connection, re-seated the power cable, tried both full
and semi-qsk and both internal and external Winkeyer keying. I’ve seen this
both with my antenna and with a dummy load. It doesn’t seem to matter which
band I’m on. The problem seems to happen when the rig is first turned on and
then may go away. I saw the problem when operating last night and when I tested
the rig this morning on a dummy load it, re-occurred for a short while, then
went away. A couple of weeks ago ran SS CW with the K3 running QRP and didn’t
notice the problem.

Before I box up the K3 and ship it to Elecraft, I am looking for ideas of what
else to check. Although I built the K3 from a kit I haven’t had it open in
years. I did send it to Don, W3FPR, to update the synthesizer boards and
install the 2nd receiver about a year ago, but that was the last time the rig
was opened up. The problem is very recent I am not sure if having 2nd RX will
require much more disassembly in order to get to any connections related to the
PA. I am rather hesitant to open the rig up. My workbench space is rather
limited now and I don’t feel as confident with the dis-assembly as I was when I
built the K3.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K2 low output on 80

2008-03-07 Thread Phil Zminda
I recently noticed while on 80 cw with a watt meter attached, that my output on
80 cw was only about 2 to 3 watts at the low end of the band, even though the
drive setting was for about 12 watts. I can't say I that I have checked the
output on 80 cw recently, so this may not be new. I built and aligned the K2
about a year ago and have the built-in tuner installed. I re-checked it with a
dummy load and got the same results. If I tune to the center of the band the
output goes up. At the high end, it also appears to drop off. Other bands seem
OK. I intend to open it up and peak the alignment, but before I do that, is
there anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Phil N3ZP

[Elecraft] Latching relays

2007-06-25 Thread Phil Zminda
I am embarrased to admit it, but while being in to big a hurry to finish my
KAT2 for Field Day I accidently touched one of the latching relays with my
de-soldering iron and melted the outside corner. I have a spare, but would
rather not replace it if I don't need to. I can't see any of the internal
construction, but wonder how durable these relays are. Has anyone else had any
experience with melting a relay housing? Is there any easy way to test the
relays in circuit before finishing the assembly of the KAT2? Thanks.

[Elecraft] KSB2

2007-03-31 Thread Phil Zminda
I just finished my KSB2 and was ready to get it checked out with the mike, but
I accidently put the 16 pin header on the wrong side of the Control Board. I
was able to get it out but not without ruining it. Other than being more
convenient to change mikes, any real need for the header? Do any of you
dispense with the header and just wire to the pcb pads? I'd rather not wait
for a replacement. I can allways install it later if I need to make a change.

[Elecraft] K2 compared to others rigs

2007-03-23 Thread Phil Zminda
Now that I've been using my K2 serial # 5719 for a while, I am a bit
disappointed in my Ten-Tec Jupiter, particularly when there are strong CW
signals on adjacent frequencies. I was always a Ten-Tec fan and loved my
Corsair II, but wanted to try a newer design radio. Now, I'm thinking of
selling or trading the Jupiter, but I wonder what's out there in the $1200 to
$1500 range (new or used) that might be a step up from the Jupiter in receiver
performance. Without opening up a can of worms, I'd like to hear some feedback
on the IC 746 Pro, Ten-Tec Omni VI, TS-2000 or any others I may have
over-looked. What else are you guys using?

Thanks for this great resource. It's been a great help in getting to know my K2.

[Elecraft] Installing KSB2

2007-01-03 Thread Phil Zminda
My bare-bones K2 is almost completely assembled and ready for final testing.
I will probably build a KSB2 within the next few months. I don't expect to
add too many other options other than the KNB2, which I already have and
possibly the K160RX. How much work is to install the KSB2? Since everything
is still apart, is it worth getting any of the Un-module/Rework eliminators
or parts kits to save time later on? I can see where installing some headers
or caps now would be convenient, but don't want to over-complicate my final
testing and alignment process. I am a former electronic tech and not
bothered by unsoldering components.

Any suggestions are appreciated. This list has been a great resource during
my build process, which has gone very well. Thanks to all.

[Elecraft] Considering K-1 or K-2

2006-08-06 Thread Phil Zminda
I'm looking for a low power rig for at home QRP or pic-nic bench
portable/vacation use. I'm primarily a cw guy. I built a Ten-tec 1340 recently
to use portable, but I found that having about 2.5 watts on 40 meters only was
a big handicap with a travel antenna. I worked in electronics assembly in a
past life and have built Heathkits and homebrew projects also. After the 1340,
I think I'm ready to consider a K-1, 4-band or K-2. I see used IC-403's and
FT-817's for sale in the $350 to $400 range, but wonder how they compare to the
K-1 and K-2. I'm leaning for the K-1 primarily on budget and available spare
time for building but see a lot to like in the K-2. Any comments on comparing
these rigs? If I went with the K-2, would I be satisfied with a bare bones
model without adding too many options?

Thanks,
