RE: [Elecraft] CB band TX? - I'm shocked!
-Original Message- Before Eric Stops this thread, This is a point I have wondered about for a long time. In the US, it has been illegal to use CB frequencies since the late 70's. To the hams this mean that transverters had only 2 Mhz to work with (28-30mhz) as an IF. This means that a 6 meter transverter had to be crystaled 50-52 or 52-54. The same is true for the other bands that are 4 Mhz wide also. I have often wondered if the FCC would allow an IF radio to be built that covers either 26-30 Mhz or 28-32 Mhz to allow tranverters access to both small signal and FM ends of the band. Maybe this is a point that we have been to afraid to ask (with good reason, the FCC scared me well). Maybe there was another answer all along we did not know it. Maybe the popularity of the CB band has dwindled to the point that it is not the hot spot we remember. RE: [Elecraft] external soundcards for digimodes
Chris, Built on the motherboard type sound cards need to be checked before using them for more than just listening. Many, but not all, are designed to provide signals for cheap computer type speakers. This means that the audio bandpass is pre-distorted to match these speakers. Often this means a boosted bass and sometimes boosted treble. All Windows versions have some control of this depending on the driver in use. However, sometimes this is designed into the chipset and changing it in Windows makes it worse. The other problem I have had is excessive noise. Power supply, chip noise you name it. One that I measured barely made -40db noise floor. This may not sound so bad, broadcasters are to make -60 min. for the entire system. In this case the card is too noisy adding it to a system makes the noise worse. Many third party audiophile type sound cards both internal and external have flat response and noise floor well beyond -60db. Most have better bypassing and dynamic range. Another difference could be that these cards often sample out to 96K and some even higher sample rates, a benefit if experimenting with SDR. Your software may not use the extra resolution or the sample rate, but a card capable of better will generally do better even in the lesser mode. Good Luck Richard Kent My own interest in the K3 is principally (but not exclusively) the digimodes. For that reason I was interested in the suggestion of Simon, HB9DRV that there might be an operational gain in using a better sound card than that on the PC motherboard. I don't know enough about computing to make judgements, and it would help me (and others in my position) if more knowledgeable and experienced folk on the list could offer advice on the following questions. Q1.Does experience suggest that there can be an observable operational gain in using a sound card different from that built into the PC? Q2.Which published technical specifications of a sound card are relevant to digimode operation? Q3.On the basis of the answer to Q2, how does one judge whether one sound card is better than another for digimode operation? Q4.Do list members have specific recommendations for cost-effective external sound cards? (The sound card suggested by Simon costs around as much in the UK as the 100W upgrade for the basic K3.) 73 Chris, MØPSK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Conception of a K2
John, My son is 14. He has gone with me to help setup field day. He currently has the furthest from home contact. I am building my second K2 (K2/100 when done). I bought the DL1 and XG2 from what I learned from the first K2. I supervised my son as he built the mini-modules. He saw the large number of parts in the K2 and got scared. As yet he has not volunteered to help with the radio. Sorting the caps into a container with compartments is necessary. Small solder less than .020 very good idea. Rework eliminators are a good idea especially if you will add options one at a time. They are also good if you need to remove an option for troubleshooting. Removing an option usually disables the radio in some way requiring reinstalling parts to make the radio work. I did not do the eliminators and wish I had. Good luck and happy building Richard Kent WD8AJG K2 5296 and 1/3 of 5996 -Original Message- OK so I have decided to buy the base K2 kit and build it along with my son; He needs to see a process like this unfold. RE: [Elecraft] USB Support - K3, K2?
I thought I heard or read that including an USB controller into a piece of equipment requires one to pay a licensing fee to the organization that maintains the USB definition. If this is true that could be why many devices do not include USB compatibility. The cost may be too much for the number of devices to be sold. Anyone know for sure?? Rick Kent WD8AJG -Original Message- As many posts have mentioned, for various reasons, it would be nice to have a USB port into the K3. And also a K2 upgrade. Wonder how hard this would be for Elecraft to work up and provide? Seems like RS-232C Serial has been around for decades and decades - I think starting in just past Fairfield TTY Teletype days in 1959. I just went thru a failed USB-to-Serial cable converter attempt from my Laptop (USB) to a Kenwood TH-F6A HT. Kenwood service knew nothing about USB, and very little about their freebee HT software program that supports the TH-F6A handi-talkee. I gave up - after many many comm link failure difficulties into the TH-F6A, from a very very modern 2006 Compaq laptop, loaded with USB ports. Sent TH-F6A back to HRO. RE: [Elecraft] 50 and 75 ohm BNC Connectors
While not an RF application. 75 ohm connector BNC and others are important to the digital video production environment. It is my understanding that a 50 ohm barrel at the end of the correct length of coax will stop a digital video signal. I am in the process of installing a new digital switcher and I am watching connector, barrels, terminators impedances closely. Rick Kent WD8AJG K2 5296 -Original Message- I've received a question about compatibility of 50 ohm BNC male connectors with the 75 ohm female BNC connectors on Exetron's ADA 6 300MX video distribution amplifier. Amphenol makes the following statement about 50 and 75 ohm BNC connectors: Two distinct types of 75 O BNC's are available, and both mate with each other and with 50 O BNC's. Type 1 is designated 75 O BNC-T1 and provides constant 75 O performance with low VSWR DC 4 GHz. Type 2 is designated 75 O BNC-T2 and is usable with low reflection DC - 1 GHz. For applications above 1 GHz, Type 1 is recommended. Unlike BNC connectors, however, please remember that 50 and 75 ohm Type N connectors are not mechanically interchangeable and that physical damage results when a 50 ohm N male connector is inserted into a 75 ohm female N connector. On page 61 of the manual in the vco alignment, I measured the voltage of r30 first out at 2.33. that was with the tuning slug, L30 turned all the way in. turning the slug out the voltage changed to 2.44. this is no where near the 6 volts. My question is, the manual says if the voltage does not change, refer to troubleshooting. I can't find anything in troubleshooting that refers to this. With the small change, I am afraid I will need to rewind t5. Anyone have the same problem? RE: [Elecraft] K2 and SSB
The K2 is my only low bands radio. I use at home and at scout camp for demos. Phone and digital. Use it. It work well. Rick Kent WD8AJG K2 5296 -Original Message- I was just wondering how many here use SSB with their 15 watt K2? Does it meet your expectations? The reason I am asking is because, I have the SSB board ready to install. I have been using the basic K2 the last few days in CW mode and I really like it since I work mostly CW. I have a Kenwood TS-530SP that works great on SSB so, I'm trying to decide if it's really worth installing the SSB option. So, I'm trying to gather as many opinions as possible so that I can sit and torture myself further. :-) I did own an Argonaut V for about eight months. It would put out about 20 watts which made SSB a bit more of a challenge. Since I have the Kenwood that will put out 170 watts, believe it or not, I'm thinking that I would probably not use the SSB option unless it's for QRP SSB. Your opinions are welcome. I should mention that I'm not planning to add the 100 watt amp to the K2. If I'm going to do that, I'll just buy a K3! I also work a lot of QRP CW. [Elecraft] KAT2 further Questions
Thanks Don for the reply. I have since found that I had installed R6 before I was suppose to so those voltages I quoted were loaded down not isolated. This might further explain why I do not have a left over resistor and the voltages being slightly low. Next issue I realize that the instructions state that the SWR into 50 ohm 1:1 and slightly off on higher bands. Mine shows a 1:1 until 20 meters 1.3:1 it continues to get worse until 10 meters is 2.3:1. I have also noticed that power control is not right. With a wattmeter inline with the 50 ohm load, power requested and indicated on the K2 and power read on the output don't agree and get worse as frequency increases. In most cases the power output is less than requested and indicated on the K2. I attempted to tune a 20 meter dipole strung around the basement. I found the 160 and 17 meters did not tune. 15 meters tuned 3:1. The rest tuned 2:1. Some bands (lower primarily) the power is reduced to 2 watts and tuned up. Other bands it looks like it is tuning up at full power. I had to wind T1 twice during the build and I am still not sure I wound it properly. Any more thoughts and ideas?? RE: [Elecraft] K2 assembly question
1. I made the first power up and everything went just like the manual. However, the preamp is marked on. The manual doesn't say which way it should be and I thought I'd check before I got too much farther. On mine the preamp was always on even when it did not exist yet. 2. I'm confused about soldering the RF probe. I can't seem to find a good way to position and solder the RG174 cable ends to the banana plugs. There's just a slight dimple at the end of the plugs and I can't figure a good mechanical way to connect them before soldering. I cheated here. I bought a crimp on BNC for RG/174 and terminated the coax. I already use a BNC to banana plug adaptor for my voltmeter for other reasons. This just made the probe compatible with my system. However, this does make for a solid connection. Richard Kent WD8AJG K2 5296 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. You wrote: Can you describe what you mean by hot poles? And any idea how I could get hold of some from the local electric company here? When they fail the test, are they sold as surplus or just destroyed? Generally, most electric utilities will destroy hot poles which fail their Hi-Pot tests. They don't want to risk that someone might get hold of one and then try to 'work' on their local wires with it...! HOWEVER... if you can develop a relationship with someone at your local utility, especially if you can convince them that their failed hot poles would be the best thing since sliced bread for local hams to use as EMERGENCY ANTENNA SUPPORTS, you might be able to get them to allocate some of their failed poles to your use. It happened that one of our club members worked at an electric co-op which was tossing several poles and he (basically) just went out and scarfed them out of the trash bin before the trash collectors got to them. I think we managed to get hold of about 6-8 that way. Then, a couple years ago, when the State of MO held an emergency comms exercise in the St Louis area, with emergency services reps from many city / county / private groups present, the comms rep from Missouri's largest electric utility was present and he saw is using a couple of the hot poles for supporting our HF dipoles and a couple VHF verticals. He mentioned the fact to one of our comms guys who immediately put the 'arm' on him for their company to make their failed poles available for the same usage, rather than destroying them. It worked, and we came away with a dozen or so poles, most of which have been distributed to ARES and emergency preparedness groups throughout the state. A VERY worthwhile project. There are also companies (www.tmascto.com, for example) which sell NEW hot poles. But the price is fairly significant. RE: [Elecraft] 10 meters
In my area, I have heard SSB signals 28.25 to 28.45. A local club uses 28.337 SSB. Another club runs CW practice on 28.150. A third club used 28.090 for CW/RTTY/DIGITAL. Most of this is local communication but, others have joined the conversation as band conditions allow. Area is Northeast Ohio. [Elecraft] FM??
Just was wondering it the folks at Elecraft are thinking, or working on an FM add on for the K2. Or a separate FM radio. I have been interested in space communication and a FM radio with small tuning steps is not easy to find. Transverters and a good IF radio exist, Just no FM. Any thoughts?? RE: [Elecraft] K2 VCO Shield instructions - Freq Counter probe
Last week there was a thread about this. Leaving the probe in increased some spurs in the transmitter output. Values were not given, but it sounds removing it is the better idea. When you are done tweaking the filters take it out. The instructions say to disconnect he frequency probe and completely remove it from the K2. I used to leave it in TP2. Does it really make a difference with anything by leaving it in TP2? [Elecraft] K2 power control
Another listers power control problem makes me think. I have just finished my K2 (#5296). I noticed that when set the power control to 2.0W I measured 1.7 to 2.2 on an external wattmeter. This level changed each keying of the transmitter but stayed between these readings. Is this normal? My output readings follow the knob setting +or- a small amount. My readings were not as varied as the other builder's radio. Do I need to look into this further???
