[Elecraft] FOR SALE K2 SER#7750 REVISITED

2019-07-08 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
When I decided to sell my Elecraft K2 #7750, it was after weeks of
deliberation. Since I am relocating to a senior’s apartment complex and
will not be allowed a traditional ham station set up, a choice had to be
made: it was either keep my K2 #7750 or my KX2 #1098. I must confess it
was a difficult choice. I decided on keeping the KX2, because I rather
enjoy P.O.T.A. type operations. The KX2 being more self-contained made
the choice easier. Using the Elecraft AX-1 antenna system also made set
ups easier. I can carry the whole station in a Harbor Freight tool case.
I have more mode choices with the exception of FT8. I enjoy RTTY  and CW
more than FT8. The result: my Elecraft K2 #7750 has to go.

When I built K2 #7750 it was intended to be a CW only station with
computer control so only the KIO2 option was included. I document all my
builds. You can see the complete documented build on my web site at
.

I had some issues with the build, so I sent it to Alan Wilcox who fixed
the issue, aligned it, and also built and installed the KIO2 option for
me. Then FT8 came along, so W5LA (Jim Ragsdale) built and installed the
KSB2 option for me as I no longer felt qualified to do the work.

From Jan 24th until June 12th I made over 2,500 FT8 QSO's, including
over 500 QSO's as a W5L special event station with K2 #7750 and various
wire antennas: an 80/40 trap inverted vee and a 40/20 trap inverted vee
@ 75'. All with this K2 #7750. Sideband operation is also available,
however you will have to supply the

microphone.

I am offering my Elecraft K2 #7750 for sale for a reduced price of
$700.00, including USPS Priority Mail shipping.

No need to clutter the reflector, so PLEASE reply off the list.

before we experienced 24" of rain in 5 days here in West Monroe Louisiana
Today I plugged everything back in. I NOW am unable to transmitt FSK RTTY.
The sound card decodes RTTY however it does not transmit RTTY. The K3 keys
in SSB and CW not RTTY. This feel like a software issue to me. I have had
several auto upgrades on my Window 7 pro OS. The software uses port 4 and
port 5. Maybe the upgrades changed a setting. I do not know

have audio. I checked this on the Menu settings of SPKRS and SPKR+PH both.

I ordered a 500hz and 200hz filters for CW on K3 #8361 The 500hz does not
seem to function. The 2.7Khz works fine as does the 200hz the 500hz seems
dead any thoughts would be helpful. Yes they were installed properly

[Elecraft] QRP field day

2012-06-26 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
I hope Jessie will forgive me for reposting his Email, but now that we
have a whole year
to plan for the next field day maybe now is the time to do this.
-
From: Jessie Oberreuter
Date: Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 5:14 PM
Subject: QRP FD
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
We used to run FD at 100w. Half a dozen years back, I talked the
group into trying a QRP FD, and we had mixed results. We switched back
and forth a few times, and ultimately found that our scores didn't change,
but, in general, we enjoyed the QRP FDs more -- especially once we added
PSK31. IMHO, operating FD QRP is actually a lot more fun b/c it's easier
to set up and tear down, easier to avoid QRMing your own operators, and,
if you traditionally use generators, it's also much quieter. Your
contacts are worth more, and we get a kick out of operating simple radios.
If you're considering a QRP FD, here are some further points and
suggestions for your club's consideration:

 * Running QRP is a great way to reduce the QRM from your own
operators :).

 * The solar contacts are great bonuses, and those of us with low
power radios often find ourselves running solar for most of the day. We
have a separate set of power plugs for solar, so anyone who wants to run
it can, and we try to each make at least five rather than just making five
as a group.

 * We try to collectively earn a WAS. Not only does this create a
group goal (rather than competing for most contacts), it also gives folks
an incentive to move on from hard to make contacts and seek out other
contact opportunities.

 * Bring outboard filters if you have 'em -- they can really make a
difference. Try different antenna directions and orientations -- it can
make a huge difference in background noise. Use of separate tx and rx
antennas can also offer a huge improvement in noise reduction, and adding
support for split tx/rx to your field radios can be a great club project!
Folks often think that a clear, but relatively quiet station won't hear a
QRP signal. Don't be so sure! It's S/N, not power, that makes the
difference :). The more stations you can hear, the more stations you can
potentially work!

 * Don't forget the digital modes! PSK31 has been serving us well.
Don't forget VHF! A 6m opening can be a life changing experience! Don't
forget local contacts on 80m. You don't need to have a huge antenna and
you don't need to fight the QRN -- just make occasional passes to collect
locals. Also remember that VHF isn't just 2m FM and a mag-mount. If you
have a 6m or 2m SSB radio to spare, bring it, and scare up a beam or make
a simple quad -- your tech who would otherwise be trying to scrape up a
dozen 2m FM contacts with an HT will love you! Remember: horizontal
polarization!

 * Be willing to work different bands. Some folks have pet bands that
they just won't leave even when they're not having much success. We've
also had folks actively avoid 20m SSB because it just seems like too much
of a bedlam. Again, good filters, directional antennas, and the RF Gain
knob can make a huge difference!

 * Mentor less experienced ops -- a few simple practices can go a LONG
way towards making contacts more successful. Sometimes it's knowing how to
exchange numbers in other ways than just repeating 3A 3A (eg one, two,
three alpha), how to use attenuation, how to note when a station is clear
but too busy to hear you, move on, and try again later. These are great
points of education for members who may have never developed such skills
because they've never needed to.

 * Leave the big shack radios in the shack :). One of the things that
can make FD stressful is having to tear down the home station, pack it
into a hostile environment, pack it back, and then rebuild the shack.
Many of us have our shack radios and also have several field radios that
we might not otherwise consider for FD because they are lower power rigs.
If you're operating a QRP field day, you can leave the home shack intact,
and just bring your field radios which are also more accustomed to being
abused. Our FDs used to be something of a show of force, where folks
would seemingly bring every piece of radio equipment they owned. Now, we
try to do the opposite and typically pack complete stations in laptop and
camera bags. Having extra field rigs in your ranks can also be great for
newer members who a) may be more afraid to bring their nice base rigs into
the field, and b) often really appreciate the opportunity to operate other
kinds of radios.

 * With smaller, low power field radios, it's much easier to pack for
camping as well as operating. Small radios, batteries, solar chargers,
and headphones all around makes

Yup - it's the business model of the 21st century. I've written product

handling most of Elecraft's manuals I have handled international training
and business studies for some of the big tech companies working on a daily
basis with teams in Japan, Europe South America and Africa using the VOIP
and video conferencing, as well as doing sales training and marketing
 support for local businesses.

Instead of sitting in a cubicle after driving to work every morning, I get
to listen to the surf pounding below my house after commuting 30 feet from
the coffee pot in my kitchen and I only need to put on a shirt and comb my
hair before a video conference (no video below chest level, just like the
anchors on TV!). The downside includes occasionally being at work at 11
p.m. or 3 a.m. when working with international teams or pulling an
 all-nighter to support a disorganized client's deadline.

This is a revolution in working that Elecraft and other innovative
 companies
have embraced. It's something that will likely expand tremendously in the
future as more companies understand the benefits of a flexible work force
because we don't get paid for showing up - we're paid only for benefits
delivered. And we are not limited to the challenges (and dangers) of only
 one source of income.

But as I'm quick to point out to everyone who dreams of self-employment,
understand that, when self-employed, the employee has the most miserable,

Actually I'm not an Elecraft employee. I work on a contract basis from my
home here is Santa Rosa, about a three-hour drive north of Aptos.
Elecraft has a number of employees and others like me working under various
arrangements and scattered all over. Even one of the principals
(Wayne) does not physically work in the plant.

This kind of business model is one of the changes made possible by the
arrival of the Internet. When I was still working at HP/Agilent I was on
several design/development projects with engineers located at other
divisions in Japan, Korea, Scotland, and Idaho. The projects were tied
together with lots of emails and phone calls as well as occasional
video-conferences and trips to the other plants.

[Elecraft] ERR IO3 more!!

2011-04-30 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
Here is all that I found:
I lost my computer Tues night through the Comcast cable link.
When installing the K3 Utility in the new computer I found that it is not
commuicating with the K3.
I have ERR IO3 on K3 3212 on power up.
The N1MM contest logger does not communicate with the K3 either.
I surmise that the KIO3 is damaged
Just contacted a station in OHIO and the K3 seems to be preforming properly.

[Elecraft] K3 #3212

2009-06-25 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
My K3/10 #3212 is completed. No options were ordered or installed.
Only the 2.7khz filter is installed. I have a couples of issues.
I have done all the test and calibrations on page 65 on the assembly
manual. TWICE.
#1 I do not seem to have power out using SSB even though the W1 Meter says I do.
#2 It would seem that the AF control in k3/10 #3212 for the main
RX (no sub RX) is non functional. Turning the knob has no effect. The
HI / LO settings in the CONFIG menu does function. In fact the
audio will disappear totally sometimes and the knob must be wiggled
to get it back. The RF control works just find in controlling the
volume levels.
Any help will be very much appreciated

[Elecraft] 2-56 pan heads

2009-06-24 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
During the assembly of K3 #3212 Front panel on page #29 requires 2ea
2-56 black 1/4 6.4mm pan head screws and #2 split lock washers to
mount the stand-offs under the LCD. These screws were missing from the
Hardware bag. There were 2ea 4-40 black flat head screws in the bag. I
found 2ea 2-56 black pan head screws in my Junk Box, however they were
shorter than 5.6mm. In order to install the stand-offs the #2 split
lock washer had to be left off. Is this action going to cause an issue
later?

bought 10 of these so I need to find out for certain. It also seems
there a multitude of different variation of this silly thing. Thanks to

While you are at it, n1mm is an excellent contest
