[Elecraft] lighten strike

2011-09-14 Thread Scott McDowell
A couple of years ago I had a lightening strike directly to
my tower. I didn't know that there was a cloud in the
sky until that happened. It not only ruined ever piece
of ham equipment I had, but also got into the electrical
system in the house and ruined several appliances.
I was in the shack at the time, but was not using any
of the equipment that was burned to a crisp, or I
wouldn't be around to write this!!
I was lucky that I had good insurance. It paid for all
the crispy critters.

So everyone should be aware of what the weather is
doing outside before sitting down to  operate your rig.
It could mean whether you stay alive or not !!

[Elecraft] K3/100F/atu for sale

2011-06-13 Thread Scott McDowell
I have a factory built K3/100F with ATU for sale. I purchased it from Elecraft
on 3/30/2011
at a cost of $2558.98. (S/N 5329) It is still in new contition, and has less
than an hour operating time on it.
The only reason for selling it is that it is too complicated to operate for an
old man!
Will ship to USA only for $2,100.00 Power cable, manual,  and microphone
included. (MH2)

I also  have a partly assembled K2/10 for sale. I ran out of parts before I got
the RF board assembled.
The front panel and control board are assembled, tested and work fine
I got the RF board  about half way popualted with parts before I ran out.
I sent Elecraft an email about the shortage of parts, and they seemed to think
I was just trying
to steal parts.
Will ship the K2 for $450.00 to the lower 48 stated only.
I can be reached  at n...@yahoo.com or 806-622-3048

[Elecraft] K3 unusual noise

2011-05-30 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
My factory built K3 is about six weeks old and today it started doing something
that I have never
had a rig do before in 40 years of hamming.

I was listening on 20 meters CW and the K3 suddenly started making a fast
ticking noise at various
speeds. The wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour and I suspected that. So I
disconnected the
antenna. The ticking noise continued. So then I turned the K3 off, and even
with the rig turned  off
and the antenna disconnected, the ticking coninued for several minutes. The
ticking was about as
loud as one normally has the audio set when in use.

Since the rig was new I have had a one megohm resister across from the center
conductor of the
coaxial cable to the braid on the coxial cable.
After letting the rig set turned off for a few minutes, I turn it back on and
everything seems normal.
Anyone have any ideas about what might be going on?

[Elecraft] KX3

2011-05-25 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
Well I am about to show my ignorance again which I don't really like to do, but
here goes.
I don't always read all the messages on his reflector because there is getting
to be too many of them.
But lately I have been seeing a lot about a KX3. Exactly what is it? Is it an
add on accessory
for the K3, another stand alone transceiver, or what? I presently have a K3/100
with the ATU,
and am thinking about a K2/10 as a backup rig. If the KX3 is a stand
alone transceeiver,
does it out shine the k2/10 for backup purposes, and what kind of power output
does it have ?
Any info on  it willl be appreciated.

[Elecraft] static charges

2011-04-21 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
I live at 3600 feet altitude on the Texas high plains where it is extremely
dry,
and
we have a lot of wind. And lots of static eletricity. I have static charges
jump
as
much as 3/4 of an inch to my hands daily, and usually several times a day.
How can I protect my transceivers from this. I keep them grounded and the
antennas disconnected when not being used. but sometimes I believe this
attracks
the static charges. I also keep them disconnected when not
being used
How can I protect the rigs from static???

[Elecraft] factory built k3/100/F

2011-04-20 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
Has anyone besides me recieved a factory built k3/100/F that had no, (like in
zero),
output in the ssb mode. Or am I just the lucky one. I worked on it for a while
with
support on the telephone, then they told me to send it back to the factory.
That sounds like someone at the factory isn't doing the testing that should be
done
on the new rigs before they are shipped.

[Elecraft] K3

2011-04-07 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
I have a brand new K3/100/F that I am having a problem with.
I really think it is more the operator than the transceiver.
It works fine in CW mode, but has no output in ssb mode.
The transmit led comes on when the  mic button is depressed
but has no audio output. I feel that something is not set right
on the front panel, but have no idea what. Any ideas would be
appreciated. I had the idea that a factory built model would
work straight out of the box?

[Elecraft] K3/100/F

2011-03-28 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
This is my first message to this reflector, so if I mess things up don't be
supprised.
I have some questions about the K3/100/F. I just ordered one and will not have
it for a
couple weeks. Is there any gotchas that I need to know about before I start
messing
around with it? The only accessory I order with it is the internal antenna
tunner.
I have never even seen one except in pictures, but like the things I hear about
it.
I have had four K2's in the past and it looks like the K3 is totally different
from that.
So any information about it will be new to me!

[Elecraft] K1-2 Problems

2010-07-03 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello

I just finished building a K1-2 and am having a problem that I
need some help with.
When I turn it on,  it comes on with the E-42 message on the
display. If I press the band switch the display shows the band
it is tuned to. I can double press the band button and it will
change bands. But what ever I do it always comes back to the
E42 message. I assume that the VFO isn't working.
I have checked the voltage on every pin of every IC in the rig and
they all are within a few tenths of a volt of what the manual says
they should be.

When I touch pins 4 or 5 of RF- U2 or pins 3 and 8 of RF U3 with
a voltmeter probe I get broadcast statons at a good volume, but
other than that I just get noise. I can never change to any other
stations. The display never shows a frequency that it is tuned to.

Any help appreciated.

[Elecraft] k2 bnc connector

2008-08-06 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello

Has anyone had any trouble with the bnc antenna connector on a K2?
Mine doesn't make contact with the antenna coax all the time. I can tell
by the receiver noise when it looses contact. I think it is probably doing
that when I am transmitting, but I have no way to tell except the swr goes
out is sight. I have tried several of the bnc to pl239 adaptors and have the
same problem with all of them.
Has anyone ever changed out the antenna receptical from the bnc to a
so239? This loosing contact with the antenna while I am transmitting can't
be very good on the K2 final amps.
Any info will be appreciated.

[Elecraft] dipole antenna camping trip

2008-07-26 Thread Scott McDowell
Here is some antenna information that might supprise you!
I was planning a camping trip to the mountains and needed a dipole antenna
for my K2/10. I would be camped in a heavly wooded area and space between
trees would be small. So before leaving home I built a 20 meter dipole
because
it would be short and would be easier to get in between the trees. Then I
decided
it would be nice to have 40 meters if I had the room, so I took two end
clamps
off of a battery jumper cable and clamped them to the end of the 20 meter
dipole, then added enough wire to the clamps to make it a 40 meter dipole.
When I installed the antenna at 8000 feet alt I had enough room for the 40
meter addition. The center was 25 feet off the ground, one end was 20 feet
up
and the other 6 feet off the ground.
I found that with the 40 meter attachment with the battery cable clamps the
antenna
was resonate on 40, 20, and 15 meters with an swr of .1 on all three bands.
Even in the heavly forrested area I worked stations all over the US and
Canada.
Just to the north of me was a mountain range that went above the timberline,

but I didn't seem to have any trouble getting over it,
and to the south was another that was about ten thousand feet high.
They didn't seem to effect my signals. I was running 10 watts the whole
time.
The bears even left me alone!

[Elecraft] kpa100 swr bridge

2008-07-11 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello

I just finished building the kpa100 for my k2 and need some help.
All the test through building went as the manual said they should.
But I have a problem with the swr bridge null adjustment. With the
pka100 connected to a 2kw dummy load the k2 shows an swr of 9.9-1
on all bands. An inline swr meter shows an swr of zero. I went through
all the adjustments for the bridge but the swr reading on the k2 didn't
change. Can someone point me in the right direction. I can't find
anything about this in the manual.

[Elecraft] K2 repair

2008-05-15 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello

I would like to apologize if I ruffled some feathers over Elecrafts support.
I was told when I bought my first K2 that Elecraft did not work on them.
When I had a problem with it that I couldn't fix, I sold it and bought
another
one. Well, I had the second one working beautifully for a month and
it started developing problems. So I was going to sell it on ebay and
buy the third one. As you can see, this was getting expensive.
Now I am told that Elecraft does repair them, so I canceled the
Ebay add, and am sitting here waiting for Elecraft support to return my
call on getting this one fixed.
Sorry I was such a pain in the rear, but all I wanted was a working K2.

[Elecraft] K2 troubles

2008-05-07 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello

My K2 has worked really good since I finished
building and trouble shooting it about three
weeks ago. It had excellent receive and transmit
and everything worked fine except for one thing.
The low battery info message kept coming on
every eight minutes.
I should have left it like that, but the message
got to bugging me so I ordered another
micrprocessor (ctrl board U6) and installed
it. The microprocessor was only six weeks
older than the original one, so I thought that
all I would have to do is swap them out.
(Wrong)
Since I installed the new microprocessor three
days ago nothing works except the display.
No sound and no transmitt.
Now, three days later the display has started
acting up. It doesn't work on forty meters, but
works on the other bands, at least for now.
I was very careful to install it correctly with
no bent pins.
Could this be another bad microprocessor,
or could something else be causing all
these problems?
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 problems

2008-04-30 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
I have been having some problems with my K2 which were the
lo battery message coming on every eight minutes, the volt
meter not working, and the vfo linearization not working on
test point 1.
The transmit and receive worked really good.. The low battery
message was bugging me so I put in a new microprocessor.
That cured the low battery message, volt meter not working,
and the linearization on test point 1.
The new microprocessor is the same as the old one
since the rig is only two months old. Now nothing works!
The receiver is totally dead, and the transmitter output
is zero.
I can't go through the set up procedure again because
I keep getting the info 232 message, regardless of how
I go to 40 meters.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 low battery message

2008-04-24 Thread Scott McDowell
Don W3FPR

At the cathode of D-12 in receive mode I get 13.17 volts.
At the cathode of D-12 in tune mode at 10 watts I get 12.5 volts.
The K2 display shows .260 ma in receive mode
and 2.10 amps in transmit ( tune mode).
I don't get any voltages fromt he display because
that part doesn't work.
R9 and R10 both check ok.
To me, this all seems inline with what you said they should
be. Am I all wet?
This leave U3B, so I think I will order another and see
what happens then.
Thanks for your help

[Elecraft] K2/10 low battery message

2008-04-23 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
Has anyone ever had their low battery mesage
keep coming on every five minutes on their k2/10.
Where does this message originate from?
I have re-soldered every joint from the power
input up to the power switch and can't figure out
where the power circuit goes from there.
All components check good up to that point.
I even re-soldered the power switch. Anyone ever
have a bad power switch? The low battery
messages never comes on during transmit.
I have the K2/10 connected to the same 30 amp
power supply that I used on my K2/100, and
I never had a low battery message on it.
I don't have a battery installed so that is not
the problem.
I never got this message on my K2/100 running
100 watts, so I believe the problem is in the K2.
Any one know where to start looking?

[Elecraft] two transceivers and one antenna

2008-04-18 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi
I need some ones opinion on something I am thinking about doing.
I sure hate to have to say, I wish I hadn't done that!
I have two transceivers and one multi-band yagis antenna.
Switching the coax from one rig to the other gets to be a hassle.
I've been thinking about getting a coaxial switch with
two outputs and one input. Then connecting one transceiver
to one output and the other transceiver to the other output.
Then connect the input to the beam. Is there going to be
enough seperation in the switch to keep from damaging
the transceiver that is turned off and switched out of
the circuit? Has anyone done this?
Any information appreciated.

[Elecraft] K2 ground

2008-04-16 Thread Scott McDowell

Thanks for your reply
I first learned the code in the navy in 1952, but didn't become a ham until
1973. I worked in
law enforcement for ten years, then became a railroad locomotive engineer
for 30 years.
My ham shack is on the second floor of our home and one afternoon last
summer I
heard what sounded like a bomb go off just above the roof of the house. I
had received
a lighening strike on my tower which is about two feet from the house. I
didn't know a
storm was in the area so everything was still hooked up.
The strike came in on the coaxial cable to the K2 and it exploded. I had
such a power
surge that everything in the house that was plugged in was burned up. When I
put up
the tower I put the bottom about six inches below the concrete pad for a
ground. I think
that took most of the strike to ground, or the house may have burned up.
I have built another K2 and hope it has a longer life!!!

[Elecraft] Low battery on K2 without battery

2008-04-11 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
For some reason the low battery messages keeps poping up on my K2
in the receive mode.
I have the p7 jumper on the internal side, and have tried it on the
external pins, but I still keep getting the low battery message.
On my first K2 I had the battery deal turned off, but don't see anything
in the manual on how to turn it off on this one.
It's drawing 240 ma on receive and the internal volt meter doesn't work
but the power supply voltmeter shows 13 volts.
Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K2 problems

2008-04-10 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
I ended up having to run the vfo linearization on tp3 instead of tp1 on Dons
(w3fpr) advise
and it worked. He suggested that I look for a cold solder joint or a
component in
wrong. I resoldered every connection in vfo and vfo alc circuit and everying
was in the
place it should be, and in right.

It seems to be working normal, so I made my first contact on it and got a
good report.
I think the problem is probably a faulty conponent.
So what is the worst thing that can happen if I just use it even if I did
have to
run the vfo linearization on the wrong test point?
I just ran it on 5 watts output, and the finals weren't even warm when I got
through.

[Elecraft] K2 vfo linearization

2008-04-08 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi
I'm trying to do the vfo linearization on my k2 and am having a problem
again!
Every time I do the cal pll I get the frequency on the counter of 11959.64
for an instant, then the info 232 message about not being on
40 meters. It never goes beyond the info msg. I have entered the frequency
with the key pad and changed the band with band + and band _ and I still
get the same message. I also checked the frequency
with another transceiver and it is receiving on 40 meters.
Anyone have any idea why this is occuring?

[Elecraft] K2 receiver alignment

2008-04-07 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi
I'm starting the receiver alignment on my k2. It is not receiving on all
bands. 40 and 20 meters is about it.
To begin with, on the alignment and test part 2 I am supposed to get a
frequency reading on TP 3 of
12090 khz +/- 30 khz. I am actually getting a reading of 12099.73. Any idea
what would cause this
and how to get it down to 12090?

Also my frequency counter and amp meter works, but the voltage meter
doesn't.
looking at the schematic I can't figure out which components are involved
with the voltmeter.
I went ahead and aligned the transmitter if this would make any difference
and it has full output.
Any help appreciated

[Elecraft] K2 L33

2008-04-03 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi

I have a question about L33 in the BFO circuit on the K2 I am building. The
wire it is wound with appears to
have a coating of some kind on it. Should this coating be removed before
soldering it to the resistor that
holds it in place? And if so, how can it be removed without destroying it. I
tried scraping the coating off
but that didn't work. The wire broke. Instead of taking off a couple ot
turns and using it anyway, I ordered
a new one. I sent an email to support at Elecraft about this, but they don't
answer emails anymore.

[Elecraft] Cutting component leads in tight places.

2008-03-30 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi
Here is a tip that some of you might want to try when building kits and
trying to cut off a component lead in close quarters.
Like when putting components on the bottom of the board and soldering on the
top.
I learned it as a farm boy back in the 30's when we couldn't afford a pair
of pliers for cutting wire.
After you solder the component lead, take a pair of long nose pliers, catch
the end of the lead and bend it back and
forth five or six times and it will break off at the top of the solder
joint. Just be sure to keep tension on the lead while
bending it.
I didn't learn it building radios, it was fences!
Am building my second K2 and just remembered breaking wire that way.

[Elecraft] K2 VFO linearization sequence

2008-03-25 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi

First off, I'm sorry to keep bugging everyone but I have a problem again.
I'm in the VFO linearization part of the second test on my K2, and am having

a problem that the manual doesn't say how to solve.
The manual says to set the VFO to anywhere between 7000 and 7100 khz. Then
enter the
cal pll and hold edit the second time to enter the vfo linearization
sequence.
When I do this I get an info 232 message that says I have to be on 40
meters, which I am on.
I can't seem to get past this.
Anyone run into this before, and if so what am I doing wrong?

[Elecraft] K2

2008-03-23 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi

Still having some problems with the receiver on my K2.
I am presently trying to figure out why my frequency counter and volt meter
is not working.
The amp meter always shows .24 miliamps.

CB Q9 and Q10 have no voltage on any pin, and CB U6 has no voltage on pin
10, which
I take is the input for the counter and voltmeter. I don't see any other way
for Q9 and Q10
to receive voltage other than U6 pin 10. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
It looks to me like U6 has a problem, should I replace it?

On my receiver I am getting a good level of noise from it on all bands, but
no signals.
Every time my electric fence fires , my S meter jumps to an S-4. Would an
electrical
impluse effect it differently than an RF signal? I think that my BFO
probably still isn't
working. I've checked all the voltages on RF board U11, U12, Q25, and Q24
and they are what
they should be.
Anyone have any ideas?

[Elecraft] K2 problems

2008-03-21 Thread Scott McDowell
Hi
I am having some problems with a K2 that I am building that I need some help
with.
During the part 2 alignment and test I discovered that the BFO wasn't working.
While investigating that, the frequency counter and volt meter stopped working.
I've been checking on the counter and volt meter and found some voltages that
are not right. For instance on the control board U6 microcontroler pin ten has
0 volts
instead of 5. Pin 18 has 4.9 volts instead of 0 volts. Pin 24 has 0 volts
instead
of 5 volts. Pin 25 has 5 volts instead of 0 volts. Pin 33 has 0 volts instead
of 5 volts.
Should I replace U6, or could the problem be somewhere else that is causing
these crazy voltages?
Also on CB U2 all the voltages are about half what they should be.
CB U7 has 0 volts on pin 5 instead of 5 volts. Pin 6 has 4.94 volts instead of
0 volts.
I'm not much of technition, so do I need to throw the whole mess away and start
over on a new one?
Thanks

Hi

The headphone jack on my K2 has turned belly up, which I underestand

Does anyone know of an easy way to change it out without damaging the

so that maybe I take the pins out of the rf board one at a time.
Has anyone ever tried this?

[Elecraft] K3 modular kit

2007-08-22 Thread Scott McDowell

Hey gang

I'm getting ready to order a K3 and have a few questions about whether to
order

the modular kit or the factory assembled version.
My concern is what is involved in tuning and aligning the modular kit?
I have no test equipment and am not very good at this sort of thing.
Could someone that has one tell me just what is involved in the alignment
and tuning of the rig?

I did build K2 5846 with all the options and the only real problem I had
with

it was a solder bridge on the basic K2.
I want the K3 to be first rate and not operate poorly because of my
inability to tune it properly.
So, since I am blind, cripple, and crazy, I don't want to screw it up! Hi
Hi.

[Elecraft] disconnecting antennas

2007-07-29 Thread Scott McDowell

Hi
In the past I have always used a coaxial switch to disconnect my radio from
the

different antennas I have.
A few weeks ago I noticed a message posted by Don W3fpr that the coaxial
switch wasn't good enough to protect radio equipment, so I started
disconnecting my antennas when not in use.
That paid off big time. Last week lightening struck my tower and the power
surge from it destroyed three computers, a packet tnc, and a TV set.
But due to Don's advice my K2 was disconnected and not damaged.
I've had a tower up for more than 30 years and this is the first time I have
had a lightening strike on it. I was in my shack which is on the second
floor

of my home and the tower just outside the shack, so the shack is a third of
the way up my tower. It sounded like a bomb had gone off just above the
house.

When I installed the tower I extended the base of the tower a foot below
the concrete for a ground. I believe this took the lightening strike to
ground, because there was no damage to the house.
So disconnect those antennas when not in use.

[Elecraft] vibroplex bug

2007-07-26 Thread Scott McDowell

Hi
I presently own an Elecraft hex key and a speedex straight key, but have
been thinking
about buying a vibroplex bug to use in contest that don't allow electronic
keyers.
It's been 30 yrs since I have used a Vibroplex bug and was wondering which
way it
operates. Do you send the dits with the thumb and the dahs with the index
finger?
Or is it the reverse? I've been sending the dits with my thumb and the dahs
with
the index finger too long to try doing the oppsite. Even using a straight
key tends

to mess me up with the keyer.
Thanks

[Elecraft] CW speed clabration

2007-07-02 Thread Scott McDowell
Does the K2 have an adjustment to correctly set the cw speed? If it does I
can't seem to

find it.
When I set the CW speed on mine on 20 wpm it actually sends about 25 to 27
wpm.
I realize that you can slow this down by more spacing between the letters,
but it would
be nice if it could be calibrated. I really think it is bad cw when you are
creating the

letters at 25 wpm and slow it down by excessive spacing.

[Elecraft] Popping noise on my K2

2007-06-30 Thread Scott McDowell

Hello
My K2 makes a popping noise when keying it on cw. I remember when I was a
kid my mother
would wash the bed sheets and hang them on an outside clothes line, and if
the wind was
blowing the sheets would make a popping sound. That sounds exactly the same
as the noise
I am hearing on the K2. It's almost as loud as the side tone. This happens
at all power output

levels from 1 watt through 100 watts.
Has anyone had this same problem, and if so, how did you cure it?
Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 Popping noise

2007-06-30 Thread Scott McDowell

Hello
Thanks to Sam Kl7V and Ken K3IU, my popping noise on my K2 is cured.
I had the T-R set on 0.02, so moved it to 0.04 and that stopped the noise.
I sure appreciate your help.
Thanks

Hello
Can the KAT100 be installed inside the K2/100 when I have the following
options already installed?
KSB2, K160RX, KNB2, KDSP2, and KIO2. I would like to have everything inside
the K2/100 case if

that is possible.

[Elecraft] K3

2007-06-23 Thread Scott McDowell

Hi
Well, since the K3 is about all you see here anymore, I have a question
about it.

Can you change that depressing looking display to green?
Just thought I'd ask.

[Elecraft] Signal report

2007-06-07 Thread Scott McDowell
I have always given signal reports according to how well I could hear the
sending station.

I never pay any attention to the S-meter. Is that incorrect?
If I have to turn down the volume for a station, I will give him a 9, and if
I can barley hear him
above the noise, he will probably get a 3. And the rest will be somewhere in
between.

[Elecraft] K2 circuit breaker

2007-06-07 Thread Scott McDowell
Is there any way to test the circuit breaker in a K2 without running the
risk of damaging the rig?

I have had the circuit breaker in my Icom PS-30 switching power supply trip
a couple of times
lately because of high swr on the antenna I was trying to use. The power
supply always beats
the K2 circuit breaker in opening. Seems to me this should be the other way
around?

[Elecraft] Elecraft hex keyer

2007-06-06 Thread Scott McDowell

Hi
Well, I've been listening to this hipe about the hex keyer paddle and
thought it was just that, Hipe.
I just broke down and bought one. After using it for one hour, I've decided
all that hipe
is not hipe after all. In 33 years of hamming, I've keyed a cw transceiver
with just about everything
from a straight key up, and this Elecraft Hex key is head and shoulders
above anything that I have

ever used. I don't want to blow their whistle, but they did good!

[Elecraft] DSP Afil

2007-06-06 Thread Scott McDowell

Hello
I agree that is would be nice to bypass the dsp. Would deleting the clock
make room in the
software for the bypass. I have a clock sitting right next the the K2 and
never use the one in
the K2. I'm sure there is another purpose for the clock, but that is
something that I am not

aware of.
My 2 cents worth

[Elecraft] K2 options KDSP2 KAF2

2007-05-26 Thread Scott McDowell

Hi
I just received the KAF2 and the KDSP2 options for my K2 from the xyl as
birthday presents (73rd).
I notice that both options have the real time clock. My question is what
does the KAF2 option do
that the KDSP2 option doesn't do? Or, is there any reason to have both
installed ?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 head phone jack

2007-05-24 Thread Scott McDowell

Hello
I plan to wire my AEA PK-232MBX to use with my K2. The K2 has the stero
headphone jack and
my PK-232 has a mono sound input jack. If I use a mono plug in the K2
headphone jack is that
going to damage the K2 sound system? If I use two wires, one on each side
of the stero jack
to the single contact on the plug at the PK-232 would it be nescessary to
install diodes in the lines
to keep the two line from causing a short circuit across both side of the
stero jack on the K2?
Guess I'm a little gun shy after smoking all the digital ic's in it with a
solder bridge when buillt it!

Sure don't want to do something that would let the smoke out of it again!
Thanks
