Re: [Elecraft] K1

I am worried about the torroids should I be?

Yes.

As folks have mentioned, winding toroids is not scary. Count carefully and
correctly -- the directions are clear -- and you're all set.

What I'd worry about is tinning the leads well and sufficiently close to
the core so you don't pull enameled wire through the PC board hole when
soldering in place. Poorly tinned toroid leads (PTTL) are a common problem.

Take care and you'll be fine. Good luck with your K1. It is a great rig.

Price reduced. Now $55.

Scott

For sale: KFL1-2 + K1B30

K1 2-band filter board for 80 and 20 meters, plus 30m parts.

K1 #139 started out as a 30/20 transceiver, but became 40/30/20/15 when
the KFL1-4 came out. I replaced 30m with 80m on the old board, but lack an
80m antenna so never used it.

The filter board and spare parts have been in a drawer for years and I've
decided not to store them any longer. Give your K1 2 new bands. Several of
these boards are on 160m (see archive).

New, unbuilt price from Elecraft = $65 + $7.50 + shipping =~$75

I'll sell postpaid to a US address for $65.

[Elecraft] Comparing SLAs

2007-06-23 Thread Scott Richardson
I used a 5Ah Powersonic PS-1250 gel cell to power my K1 for a few years
before it faded. In shopping for a replacement, I find they're about $25,
while another battery with the same dimensions and capacity made by Rhino
sells for $8.

I'm assuming the Powersonic is a better battery, but I don't mind a small
reduction in performance if I can get 3 batteries for the price of 1. Is
this a smart savings?

Re: [Elecraft] {K1 2277] VFO Alignment--VFO Range selection, 40m, 20m.

2007-06-09 Thread Scott Richardson

Rich,

Both 80 and 150 kHz have their adherents. 80 kHz will give you tuning that's
less touchy, though I've never had trouble with 150 kHz, even without the
felt mod. The wider band will let you hear WWV on 10 MHz and get you into
some less crowded frequencies -- especially helpful when there's a big
contest on, for example. You can't go wrong either way, I don't think. You
might search the archives for K1 tuning range for more opinions.

AFAIK, CW is the only digital mode supported by the K1.

Good luck.

2007-06-01 Thread Scott Richardson
If your VFO tunes in a direction opposite what it should, then you have
something reversed with the pot wiring - no other harm will come of it.

Also, a certain miswiring of the K1 tuning pot will leave you with virtually
*no* tuning range. Yep, I've done it.

RF-C2/C2A is the capacitor choice for selecting K1 VFO range. My K1 manual

[Elecraft] K1 VFO trouble

2007-01-29 Thread Scott Richardson

My K1 VFO has stopped tuning.

The rig was (pretty much) fine till I replaced the tuning pot (plastic for
metal), but the problem doesn't seem to be there. I measure approx 0 to 100
k resistance as far as pin 1 of RF-RP2, so the new pot appears to be doing
its job. Voltage measured at D3 (5.9V) changes less than 0.1 V thru the
entire 100k tuning range, however, which I don't think is right.

Other info: RIT works. VFO OSC = 3.086. I can hear WWV at 10 MHz. E42 occurs
with pot at 100k.

Can anyone tell me if this points to a particular culprit? I'm continuing
troubleshooting, but time at the bench is at a premium and I'm hoping to
find a shortcut to the solution.

Do you have the F-5 errata sheet? Step 4 gives some guidance.

Scott N1AIA

All going well until on the 80 meter band kit it mentions about adding the
10-uF electrolytic capacitor at C78 on the bottom side of
the RF board. I can not located C78 anywhere on the board. In checking the
parts list for the RF board I find the capacitor count
only goes up the C75. I have the K1 RF Rev. D board. Am I missing
something?

[Elecraft] K1 VFO reality check

2006-11-01 Thread Scott Richardson
After years of putting up with a touchy K1 tuning pot, I finally put in a
metal-shaft replacement. The new one felt great, but was tuning backwards
(duh) so I switched the leads, put the cabinet together, and now the VFO
doesn't tune at all.

The LCD indicates I'm at the bottom end of the band when I turn the pot just
above the stop. Right at the stop, I get an E42. (I was getting that E42 at
the stop *before* switching the leads, too, which felt wrong, but I was able
to change frequency anyway. Looking at my notes later, I realized I had had
a tuning range of just 60 khz, even though I've been set up for the greater
tuning range (150 khz plus).)

I've poked around a bit. Pin 14 on P1 on the RF board measures 0 to 100 k
ohms from one end of the pot to the other, so I am assuming the trouble is
not on the front panel even though that's the only thing I was tinkering
with.

This is my reality check: Does that resistance range at the board junction
eliminate the front panel as the problem area?

OSC shows me in the right range, RIT still works, D3 is at 6V, D4 is at 3V,
and I'm looking for hints about what might be going on.

Re: [Elecraft] Wha'ts Wrong With Our Radios

2006-05-27 Thread Scott Richardson
On the rarity of XIT necessity...

The need for XIT is much greater in a rig without the split option. On the
K1, switching between XIT and RIT helps me track other callers when DX is
listening up (even though the range isn't that great).

For me, split operation is one of the chief lures of the K2.

[Elecraft] Uses for K1 MCU?

2006-03-30 Thread Scott Richardson
Long ago I upgraded my K1 from firmware version 1.06 to 1.09. I kept the old
MCU, a PIC16C77-04/P, but I'm not sure why. If I'm not a programmer, would I
have any use for it beyond reverting to 1.06 in an emergency? What have
other K1 upgraders do with theirs?

Re: [Elecraft] K1 enthusiast wonders ??

2004-08-27 Thread Scott Richardson
Mike noted (among other things):
the K1 Quick Reference Card ... still has several errors that were pointed
out more than two years ago.

I also ran into a critical area where K1 web info was well behind the times
(though the reference was updated when I pointed it out).

I took this (correctly or not) as an indication of Elecraft inattention to
continued refinement and development of the K1. I'd like to be wrong, but I
think the K1 heydey is past. That's understandable, because Elecraft is busy
with other interesting and exciting work revolving around the
bread-and-butter rig... and maybe busy with some fascinating new projects.
The mod world is pretty quiet, too. The K1 zenith appears to have passed.
This reflector is just reflecting K1 senescence. (Again, I'd like to be
wrong.)

Incidentally, I also consider the 4-band board and antenna tuner to be
essential K1 accessories. Because I have them, I wrongly assume that
everyone has upgraded. At this stage, I would be much less enthusiastic
about a 2-band K1 sans tuner. I don't think that such a standard can
compete with the KX1.

My only HF rig is the K1 and it suits my needs well.

I'm lucky if I get a half hour a week for hamming and I'd prefer to spend
that time on the air, not in the rig. But eventually something will need
fixing or adjusting -- the output seems low; the frequency jumps 30 khz when
the knob gets bumped; the RIT mod still isn't working right -- and opening
the K1 doesn't seem so overwhelming. As much as I would love a K2 and a KX1,
their complexity intimidates me. Maybe it's just perception: That's
something I won't know till I find more money and time.

My K1 cost me half what the K2 would have when built to suit, and the KX1
wasn't available when I bought the rig. If I was shopping today, the K1's
price and 7-band capability would steer my decision straight to it.

I use a padded lunch bag or an amazingly well suited cardboard shipping box
for transport.

My 7Ah gel is great for home operation, but I'd rather have something
slimmer for the days I'm portable. Sometimes I take a pack of 8 AA
alkalines. I'm not sold on the KBT1. I desire solar.
