[Elecraft] Blown R58 relpaced, still no power out, does anyone have any hints?

2006-07-27 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Hi Guys,

A few weeks ago I managed to induce a fault into my K2 by transmitting
into no load when testing the top band option. I found that R58, the 180
ohm, half watt resitior at the far end of T4 had been damaged and had a
value of 4 ohms. So I replaced it and reassembled the K2 and I still
have no power out. Before I remove all of the options (ATU, Top Band and
SB) and take it back to basics, which will take time will not have for a
month or so, can anyone suggest other components I might
check.everything else seemed ok including the PA Transistors..

Also, what is the purpose of R58? Sorry guys but i am just not as clever
as the rest of you, I do software for a living, not electronics...but I
am learning..

[Elecraft] OT Does anyone have a servicing manual for a weller DS 801

2006-05-06 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Hi Guys,
I was given a Weller DS801 desoldering station a while back which
has never worked but looks brand new. . It sucks fine (over here in the
motherland this does not mean it is bad) but the tip does not come up to
temperature. At a guess the element in the iron has gone or the
thermoregulator inside the base unit is faulty..I wonder if any of you
kind folk might have a servicing manual i might consult..ir some
experience of the DS801. As this is off topic i wonder if you would
reply off list

Re: [Elecraft] PC BOARD DRILL BITS

2006-04-23 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Tom,
You are dead right about the fragility of the bits. I was lucky
enough to pick up a couple of boxes of bits at Dayton a few years back,
50 bits per box, $5 per box, the guy had loads, they were new too, guess
I was lucky.

[Elecraft] KSB2 Missing parts

2006-03-25 Thread Stephen John Farthing
Hi, I have just checked my inventory for the KSB2 and seem to be short
of all of the components for mounting on the front panel board, i.e. : -

P1, c4-c8,q3,rp3,rbias and R13,

It seems to me that the parts must all have been in 1 envelope and this
was omitted from my kit. Before I contact Elecraft for replacements I
wonder if someone could confirm this so I can check the shack to see if
the envelope has been stolen by the underpants gnomes.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Stupid Englishman confesses all

2006-03-25 Thread Stephen John Farthing
My only excuse is that my construction time is limited and it must have
been 9 months or so since i soldered the missing parts on the control
board and forgot to tick them off in the KSB2 manualas i am only 53
does this count as a senior moment?.

Thanks to Don for pointing me in the right direction.

When will I ever learn to follow instructions?

[Elecraft] OT K0BRA Active Antennas AMRAD

2006-03-04 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Greetings from England,

I wonder if anyone can help me get access to the AMRAD Website. I am
about to start building the K0BRA Active RX Antenna as featured in the
Sept 2001 QST and I am interested in getting the documentation at : -

www.amrad.org/projects/lf

however Firefox and MS Explorer cannot get access, the former thinks I
should be using HTTPS, the latter just shows a blank page.

Of course if those fine and talented Engineers at Elecraft produced a
kit for an active antenna I would not have to bother using the AMRAD
design(Hint hint). In all seriousness with the number of SWLs and
antenna restrictions around there could be a big market for just such a
kit.I want mine to do some listening with what I am away on business
trips...

Thanks ...

Hi all
It was a feindish trick...the URL in the QST article does not
exist..This one however does

https://www.amrad.org/projects/lf/

thanks for the help.

Steve G0XAR

PS Does anyone else think Elecraft could find a market for a high
performance active antenna kit?

[Elecraft] Friedrichshafen

2006-01-30 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Hi all,
It seems to me that a gathering at Friedrichshafen for us Elecrafters
might be a good idea. I'll be attending with Jan G0BBL and Alan M0PUB
and all of us have built K2s..we are staying in Lindau and hopefully
will operate portable from Austria, Switzerland and Germany whilst we
are therepossibly Maritime Mobile from the ferry to Switzerland...if
Maritime is the right word...

I have done two Dayton/FDIM trips..you will not be disappointed.

Hi,
Check the number of turns on the toroids for the 80 M band pass
filter. I had a similar problem on 40 M because I had 1 turn too many on
one of the toroids.

Your mileage may vary,

[Elecraft] K2 number 3354 lives

2005-11-19 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Hi Everybody,

My K2 sn 3354 livesthank you to everyone on the reflector for
helping me debug the couple of problems I have had along the way. If I
may make a comment about Page 74 in the manual TX alignment -

I found it curious that once the RX had been set up one has to repeat
the same procedure for TX alignment. In my case when aligning the TX for
20 Meters the output power went haywire after I set C21 and C23 to their
mid point settings and started adjusting L8 and L9. To cut a long story
short I went back to the RX pre alignment stage and set C21 and C23, L8
and L9 for maximum signal strength. Then I returned to Tx Alignment
without changing the settings...the tx power was stable at 2 watts...I
then checked all of the other bands for tx power without altering the
settings from Rx and all seems to be well...i.e 2 watts on the POWER
control, 2 watts out...on the Motorola test set. So I do not intend to
carry out any TX alignment...unless someone can explain why I should.

BTW on all bands the MDS is in excess of the quoted -135DBm - assuming
the calibration on the Motorola test set is good I get readable signals
at -137 dBm.

Lastly I would just like to thank everyone at Elecraft for such a fine
kit. It has been really been a lot of fun building the K2 and I have
learned a lot along the waythanks guysnow to start work on the
option kitsThe K2 is in the shack tuned in to a contest on 40
meters...and coping very well...I wish my morse was up to it...

[Elecraft] TX current on the Elecraft K2

2005-11-18 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Gentlefolk,

I could do with some advice. I am at Page 72 in the K2 MANUAL aligning
the TX for 40 Meters.

At 5 watts output the current drain is supposed to be 1.3-1.6 amps. The
book says if it is *much* higher than this, or the Voltage drops more
that 1 Volt I may have a problem with the TX, load or PSU.

The figures I get are: -

Tx Off...13.8 Volts 200ma

Tx on...13.1 Volts 2.16 amps 5 watts out according to the K2 internal
meter, 6.1 watts out according to Motorola R200D comms analyserwhich
contains the dummy load...the PSU is a large Palstar 30 ampere gizmo
thus oodles of spare umph.

Setting the power at 10 watts I get the following.

Tx on 13.0 volts, - High Current warning then 2.44 amps 10 watts out
according to the K2, 7.87 watts according to the R200D,

the manual says if the current is *much* higher than 2 amps see
troubleshooting.

The R200D tells me the output frequency is very stable...and after a
short warm up that the power out of the K2 is not fluctuating .and I am
assuming that its dummy load is good...the interconnecting lead looks
fine though it is rather (i.e. 10 meters) long.. And I am using a bnc to
ntype adaptor at the R200D end. The K2 current meter tells me that after
about 30 seconds the current is stable at the values I have quoted above...

So the 64,000$ (£37,647) question is..do I have a problem or
not...normally I would go through the trouble shooting stuff but the
shack is as cold as heck at the moment and I have some other things to
do..and M0PUB wants a sked when its finished and I have the ATU,
Sideband and 160 meter options to build and the battery option and I
want to get it all finished in time for the winter sports.

Greatful for any advice,

Steve G0XAR

[Elecraft] Re: TX current on the Elecraft K2

2005-11-18 Thread Stephen John Farthing

Hi Worshipful members of the order of Elecraft,

The awsome power (haha) of the list, in the shape of Don W3FPR
pointed me in the right direction. My mistake was to wind L26 with 13
turns instead of 12. Now I have corrected my blunder we have : -

10 Watts, 13.1 volts and 2.36 amps - no overcurrent warning...RTFM as
they say

I shall assume all is well...now to pre align the rx for the other bands

Kind regards
