[Elecraft] Vox per mode - data/voice K3

2019-10-06 Thread TJ Campie
Several posts on the reflector over the last few yeas regarding the ability to
set VOX per-mode across Data and SSB voice. Is this still on the wish list and
if so, what's keeping it from being implemented? There's a post from Wayne in
2009 saying it was on the list!

Please make this a reality!

[Elecraft] New bug, popping on dah side

2019-04-28 Thread TJ Campie
I hooked up a new bug (begali intrepid) and am noticing popping when keying
dahs - I if I add a 4.7uF bypass across the key line it clears this up but
it’ll sometimes make it so there’s no dits. I can’t figure this one out -
is there something I need to do to make sure there’s no extra garbage when
I’m keying? (Contacts are clean)

Thanks.

Doesn't that warning go away after the first launch of the software? I

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] questions about using a sub-receiver

2019-03-06 Thread TJ Campie
the You can consider the 2nd rx as a completely separate radio - unique
filters, unique dsp, etc And yes, using the SUB function on the front
panel, you can select diversity receive (2nd rx is on the same freq as your
primary VFO, receiving with a different antenna) or normal SUB (2nd rx is
on 2nd vfo frequency on different antenna). In both cases, the stereo
effect is used to put VFO B in the opposite earphone from VFO A.

Re: [Elecraft] Windows 10 Bug

2015-07-29 Thread TJ Campie
Joe,
You are correct when the input device has been enumerated as a microphone
input, which is the bug. Without clearing the bug forcing windows to
enumerate it as a line in device, 100 on the slider is indeed adding gain.

However after clearing the bug, it's now enumerated as a line in device and 100
on the slider is 0db, even if it reads +30 (the UI and dialogue box still
thinks this is a microphone input device, this is part of the bug). This was
verified by feeding a reference signal of a known level into the chip and
obtaining a known output level, confirming 100 on the slider is indeed 0db of
gain/attenuation AFTER clearing the bug.

This behaviour is confirmed by TI themselves in this whitepaper:
http://www.ti.com/lit/an/sbfa020/sbfa020.pdf

If you have a signal generator I highly recommend feeding a reference level
signal into a device using the chip and measuring the output yourself AFTER
clearing the bug. Remember, you are correct that the slider value will add gain
when it's been incorrectly enumerated as a microphone device. Measure a
reference input signal AFTER clearing it. Hope that helps the confusion

[Elecraft] KX3 for sale - $1,275 shipped US

2014-02-18 Thread TJ Campie
I'm regrettably selling my one prized possession, KX3 #288. My KX3 was one
of the first kits shipped during the production. The radio was built with
all the available options: ATU, Battery Charger, Roofing filter, keyer
paddle, and microphone. The 2m module is not yet available but it can be
added to this radio when it is if you desire.

The build of this actual radio was documented live on Ustream.com and that
video is archived here (3 hours):

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23127348

Some things to note about the pedigree of this particular radio: the fit
and finish of the case has changed through the production of the radios and
the early ones had less clearance around the speaker which can cause some
vibrations at higher volumes. On my radio, I used a couple pieces of
electrical tape to dampen that which worked fine but the radio will come
with that tape intact, do not be surprised.

Current radios also ship with a different VFO which offers a free
spinning VFO whereas this radio has a much stiffer feel, which is great
for portable ops. The current VFO is available from Elecraft for a small
fee. Also, an additional filtering component was added to the BNC connector
on recent radios which gave better performance on the VLF bands, and this
radio does not have that either. Again, this can be purchased from Elecraft
as well.

As is, the radio has the same amazing performance as the current production
radios. This radio has seen SOTA summits, park benches, cars, and all kinds
of exciting operating locations. Still, it shows very little wear. There's
a tiny ding on the display protector but its only noticeable in the right
light. Other than that I don't know of any other defects. Operating
performance is 10/10.

I did have a bit of a mishap while mobile once and the mic cable got a bit
melted in 2 places, but the insulation is intact and it does not affect the
operation of the mic.

The radio comes as pictured below including the following accessories:

   - Hand Mic
   - Keyer paddle (with original hardware and upgraded hardware as provided
by Elecraft) with a nice little zip up case
   - 2x power cables with powerpole connectors (only one pictured)
   - 2x 1.5mm - 3.5mm stereo cables (I used one for the IQ output and the
other as a keyline for a custom 100w amplifier which I will be selling
   separately)
   - Construction manual
   - Operating manual
   - Manual errata and bulletins, original battery retainer removed when
   the charger was installed
   - USB communications cable
   - Original box
   - BNC cover (not original equipment)
   - Lowepro Edit-150 backpack which fits the KX3 and accessories like it
was made for it. The bag is $50 new. Here's a video of how the KX3 fits
   in there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6elMOwmShto

I don't know what else to say. The radio has treated me so well, it is a
real shame to see it go, but my operating habits are changing and the
ergonomics of this radio just don't fit my operating style anymore. I'm
certain it will provide tons of great contacts and experiences to its next
owner.

   - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2ORAqLABgA

The price for a brand new radio today with these options is $1,465.

*I am asking $1275, including shipping and paypal fees. $55 for the stand
(see below). If you wish to pay by postal money order, the price is reduced
by $15. *
If you have any questions about the radio, do not hesitate to email:

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX-3 Serial Numbers To Date ...

2012-04-17 Thread TJ Campie
Remember folks, there's a spreadsheet tracking the orders. If you put in
your information, you can help others and yourself find out where you stand
in the stack. As of today, there's been 23 factory build units delivered
with 15 in transit or ready to ship. That is only the first 34 minutes of
orders and doesn't count a single kit since none have shipped.

[Elecraft] Reminder: KX3 Tracking sheet - Deliveries this week

2012-04-09 Thread TJ Campie
Folks, I just wanted to remind you all that as your orders arrive on your
doorstep, please email me or to the list of your SN and other information
so I can update the delivered orders tab. That way we can guess what our
SN will be (if that matters to anybody). Of course, if you have not
already added your information to the order tab, please do consider doing
so. You may do so anonymously if desired.

Thanks to everybody who has participated already. I think we have a good
sample of orders throughout the first couple days so we should be able to
track each shipment unit pretty easily!

And as always, those receiving their rigs this week, feel free to post tons
of photos and videos! :P

73 have a nice week

[Elecraft] K3 with 2m add on - RefCal?

2012-01-27 Thread TJ Campie
I installed the 2m module + the 2m Reference option last night and I was
confused about the XV1 OF config. I went and got the Ref Cal value and did
the math in the manual and for both sections of 2m, it came out to -0.047
and -0.049. Does that sound right? Did I do it correctly?

Thanks, 73

[Elecraft] FS: K2/10 $750

2012-01-19 Thread TJ Campie
It has finally come time to list my beloved K2. It has served me well. My
K2 is a SN 4000+ model. It was built by Dale Parfit, W4OP. It has the
KAT2 ATU (built by me) and the KSB2 Sideband module (built by me). I will
also include the Icom hand mic that the rig is configured for. It also has
the FT100 knob and will include the original knob if it is wanted by the
buyer. I added an internal balun to the antenna 2 input which allows very
easy plug and play for balanced antennas. It can be configured to be 1:1
just by moving the input wires and re-soldering. I'll include a bit of
write up on how that should look. It can be removed if desired. I have
pictures of the mod for those interested. I also installed some nice flip
up feet on the front that are lower than the provided bail, they are just
removed by unscrewing them. I will include the factory bail as well.

In the sense of full disclosure, when assembling the SSB module, I did run
into a problem, I installed the wrong connector on the module (same sex as
the one on the board) and had to remove the one on the main board of the K2
which was very difficult and the board now is a bit darker in those
areas. Electrically the board is fine and the SSB module works great,
Elecraft uses very high quality PCBs so there should be no problems. Just
looks a bit wonky.

I am asking $750 which includes shipping and insurance to the US.
International folks can inquire for actual shipping costs. Price includes:
the radio, manual, original knob, FT100 knob, original tilt bail, flip up
feet, internal balun, power cable (with power poles), Icom hand mic,
internal test probe. Does not include the RF probe that came with the
kit. I think that covers it.

Thanks for looking. 73.

THOSE BLASTED FIELD TESTERS

 Hi Curron,

As usual with a complex product release it's a bit of all of the
above. Last month, we gave early field-test units to several very
picky operators who've been scrutinizing every detail on behalf of
future customers. Several opportunities for improvement have come out
of this, and it's critical that we get such changes in now, rather
 than impose field-upgrades later.

I already mentioned the change to the internal battery; the battery
holders will now be included, even if you don't purchase the charger
module. Our testers also just convinced us to switch to a much nicer
(but more expensive) optical shaft encoder for VFO A. These and other
last-minute tweaks necessitated layout changes to both of the main PC
boards. Since costs also went up, we've been working with vendors to
get better pricing on other parts, where possible, so we can hold the
 line on the retail price.

My seven year-old, Griffin, may be the most impatient future KX3 user
of all. He's got his own corner at my workbench where he tests
batteries, rigs up improbable assemblies of scrapped parts, and makes
sure I'm working instead of playing my guitar. When? is his favorite
question, and he'll be the first to know.

We're still hoping to take orders in December.

[Elecraft] New K3 built - can I reset the 5w calibration?

2011-12-08 Thread TJ Campie
I finished building a K3 for the radio club at work and I thought I'd take
the bull by the horns and attempt to improve the factory setting for the 5w
calibration on the 100w Bird watt meter I had. I couldn't get it to go up
the the point that looked like 5w on the meter regardless of how much I
turned the knob on the K3. The setting ended up at 10 (the minimum) but I
think it must have been more correct from the factory. I *think* it was up
at about 37 but I don't remember - is there a way to reset it to the
factory setting? I don't have access to a 5w accuracy meter.

Otherwise, the build went great and was a blast :)

[Elecraft] PLL upgrade

2011-09-16 Thread TJ Campie
So quite a while back, I posted on this reflector about a problem I was
having with my K2 changing apparent frequency (not displayed) drastically based
on squeezing the case. It seemed as if the BFO was moving but I eventually got
it to settle down and I was just more careful.

Today I decided I would dig more into the situation because I was tired of the
thing swinging all over every time I moved the radio, which is fairly often as
I do go portable somewhat often. I hooked up the Freq counter to TP2 (BFO) and
squeezed here and there and got the radio to behave as before but I did not
notice the frequency shifting at all. The issue was not in the BFO as first
thought. I looked some more and hooked up to TP1 (VFO) and saw right away what
was happening. The VFO would shift by up to 10k every time I squeezed the case
and eventually settle back where it was previously. With the lid off, I looked
around and poked and prodded until I noticed that touching the PLL upgrade
board caused the mystery behavior. I did not see anything odd on the board but
I wiggled it a bit and moved it further away from the nearby IC and it finally
stayed stable. I re-assembled the radio and could not get the mystery behavior
to return. I have squashed the beast!

Anyway, I wonder if any others have had this problem. Hopefully this will help
as I have searched but found no other references to this issue.

[Elecraft] KSB2 screw up

2011-09-13 Thread TJ Campie
So I accidentally skipped the first page of instructions then found that I
had some parts left over at the end of construction and I was missing the
header P1 or whatever, so I grabbed the connector and soldered it inonly
to find that the previous owner of my K2 had already put the female
connector on the main board of the K2, and I had just accidentally installed
the female connector on the KSB2 board. Great.

Long story short, I ripped out the female connector on the main board as it
was much easier to access but it was a huge to get the male header into
the holes. It isn't quite seated all the way but it is stable and straight
and seems to work OK with the module installed.

Question is: how would one actually go about removing one of these headers
correctly (I guess I already know the answer: desoldering station)

Already have 1 5w SSB qso down with one of the RT 66 stations and sent 1
wspr tx this morning and was spotted several places on the East coast. It
works! :D

[Elecraft] Weird K2 tuning thing (hand capacitance)

2011-05-04 Thread TJ Campie

Something seems weird with my K2 - when I put my hand near the front left of
the face the frequency of signals on the band swing around wildly (sometimes I
can get the signal to go outside of a 500 hz passband). Sometimes it settles
back down to where it was before but sometimes not. It also happens if I push
on the top of the cover on the top left too. I'm not sure if its a shielding
issue or what but I took the cover off and stuck my hand in that corner and
could not get it to act up until I put the cover back on.
I couldn't find anything in the manual about this type of behavior so hopefully
somebody on the list knows of a way to fix this as it is getting a bit
annoying.

Thanks Don - I did not build my K2 but I checked L33 and it looks good. It

Did you flush cut the leads below the BFO inductor L33? If not, the
toroid may be sitting too high and contacting the bottom cover. And did
you put tape on the bottom cover where L33 is located to assure that the
toroid cannot make contact with the bottom cover?
