Re: [Elecraft] Re: Indoor antenna for KX1...

2006-10-14 Thread Thom R LaCosta

Yup, that was me. I used #26 enamel wire to form a complete loop around the
ceiling molding. The best configuration was with the loop shorted and a
single wire running down the corner of the room to the radio. You'll also
need a ground counterpoise wire -- I used about 16' of wire laid around the
edge of the walls, at the baseboard. Everything is held in place with
push-pins, which I color-matched to the paint in the room.

Am I guessing correctly that a similar arrangement would work with the K2?

What were the room dimensions, or are they not that critical?

thanks

The real trick would be to produce one way transparent aluminum, and use it in

I agree: this does sound a lot like the W3EDP antenna, which is described
in Practical Wire Antennas, pg 33 (among other places). In this
reference, the W3EDP antenna is described as an 85' radiator and 17'
counterpoise. Connect both wires at the back of your tuner.

I use a w3edp radiatior length with 1/4 counterpoises for each bandand have
been told my the purists that my adding the counterpoises, it is no longer a
w3edp.

Seems to work...so now I will try the other lengths and see how that works,
since I have lost the end support for the longer wire due to development in the
area.

lengths and

proposed the following end-fed wire lengths:
- 26.5m (86.9 ft) for 160 - 10M use

posts. Or am I missing something?

That's one benefit...it's email based...which means you can actually
store messages on your computer.

There seems to be no way of posting anything, or easily responding
to a previous post - short of sending that poster an email. How replies
get linked to previous posts isn't explained.

If you reply to the address of the list, elecraft@mailman.qth.net, then
every list member sees the post...which is how the bulk of information here is
shared.

I suspect I'll get used to using it - but there are much more
modern FORUMS BB's out there - which categorize posts,
and all that.

Yes, and, just like rigs, there are folks who wouldn't use a forum based
venue for love or money.

I have a mailing list for drake gear, and a web based forum...and over the years
found that some folks like the mailing list, others prefer the forum, but very
few walk both sides of the street.

I have a very little used forum online at www.zerobeat.net/qrp/phpBB2/
I'd be happy to add an area for Elecraft related posts, but I suspect it
will not be used.

You can find out a LOT of information from this list by visiting
http://www.ac6rm.net/mailarchive/html/elecraft-list/

It's searchable.

Elecraft makes a great product.

Yes...and in my experience the folks on this list are some of the most helpful

I am a newcomer to all of this, and I am wondering if there is any place
left in contesting for those of us who choose not to have a computer send
code or receive code

Actually I was daydreaming about the opposite and was wondering if anyone is
working on this: There's no reason a program couldn't be written to automate
the entire contesting process. The computer could work the radio, answer
calls, send replies, and keep its own log. A control op would have to be
present, and we'd need an operating class for fully automated. It wouldn't
necessarily be something where you'd sell the software to the mass market,
thus destroying contesting forever, but rather it would make an interesting
competition among the various software companies.

Manit's not even close to April 1st.

You could even have networks of computers working one-per-band and other
computers acting as spotters for rare multipliers.

Software is pretty close to this already. WriteLog can integrate sending CW
so tightly with logging, that it really only adds one keystroke to the
normal keystrokes required for logging. After sending a CQ you enter the
callsign and hit enter. It sends your report. Then enter the other guy's
report and hit enter again. It logs the QSO and sends QSL/QRZ. If it could
parse the CW decoder window it would be half-way there.

Why not set up a server on the internet that allows multiple cw qsos...then,
instead of using rf spectrum for the operator-less contest, folks could pit
their computer against each other.

Obviously, no logs would have to be submitted, since the exchanges would be
on the server. The server could tally the scores and announce the winners
via a web page and/or email.

As a programmer this sounds really cool. I don't have time to write it but
it would be fun to work on if I could.

Perhaps you could find the time if you stopped using your K2/100...after all,
with the system mentioned above, you wouldn't need to have a K2/100.

A well meaning member of the list, sent me a copy of the Motorola PR response to
the articleand seemed to have a real hard time understanding that the PR
guy's response wasn;t the same as the actual quote from Mr. Screeden.

So, I would think that until the actual quote, in total of Mr. Screeden is
known, then it's real difficult to prove the reporter misquoted him.

If we are suspect of reporters, we should also be suspect of PR people.

[Elecraft] Compromise/Limited Space/Make My Day Antenna Advice

2005-08-23 Thread Thom R LaCosta
I could use a suggestion or twoI live in a very congested areamy house
is 11 foot wide and 25 feet long...with a yard that is 10 feel deepI have a

10 by 10 deck on the second floor.

I used to have an endfed wire that ran across the street to a phone pole...but
new houses cut that off.

There is a vent pipe on the back of the house that sticks up about 5 feet above
the roof.

So...I could try a loop on my roof(10 x 25 x 10 x 25), go over my neighbor's
roof(20 x 25 x 20 x 25) use the other neighbor's roof (30 x 25 x 30 x24), or

try to attach a light weight mast to the vent pole and go up.

QRN is very bad here. Any and all hints would be appreciated.

Rig is the K2 with the autotuner.

Years ago, when I was fueled by 807s, a few of us erected a long wire

I had a set of Morrow Twins that had NEVER made a contact from my car...so we
tried 75 meters.Managed to:

Drink too many more 807s,
Have a few QSOs,
Run out of gas,
Explain to the policeman that found us that stringing antennae was perfectly
normal.

Might try it again, sans the 807s and the Morrow twins.

Perhaps there is some confusion between taking and passing all 3 elements and
having to be licensed sequenctially.

A previous post quoted something from the FCC to the point that some new hams
were first licensed as Extra Class and some were licensed as General Class,
rather than as Technician Class.

Appears to me that if you sit for all 3 elements and pass them, you are licensed
as an Extra, take and pass the first two and you are licensed as a General, take
and pass only the first element and you are a technician.

If the Extra exam contains only material peculiar to that class of license, it
makes sense that you would have to pass the previous elements to have The Whole
Enchilada.
