[Elecraft] K3 question re dual receive

2007-08-08 Thread Tim Logan
I'm confused. I've assumed that the K3 sub-receiver must be connected to
a second antenna - a luxury many don't have. However, as I read more I'm
starting to wonder if the sub-receiver can be used for dual receive even
though you are using one antenna? Is that the case or have I just
exposed the depths to which my ignorance can sink hi hi? 73/Tim NZ7C

[Elecraft] Why buy a K3

2007-06-23 Thread Tim Logan
I've been off the reflector for months, and off the air for months, and
about to get back on. Now am seeing the K3 seeming to take the world by
a storm. In a nutshell, other than perhaps a second receiver - what
benefits does the K3 really have over a K2 - (in layman's non-engineer
language :-) Is the difference in specs something I would truly hear?
Thanks all. 73/Tim NZ7C

PS Does anyone know if the K3 will have much stronger audio than the K2?

[Elecraft] update on any changes to late serial #'s re. rx audio?

2007-01-07 Thread Tim Logan
I have been away from K2's for perhaps a year and am considering
building again. The only (and I mean only) frustration I've ever had
with K2's is the lackluster audio (a subjective observation) which has
been a subject on this reflector. My way around it in the past, to a
point, was judicious adjustment in how the AGC was set during the build
(balancing tradeoffs). I never did get around to hooking up an amplified
Motorola speaker. Anyway, my question is this: since about serial #'s
4200-4300 or so have there been any design changes to the current K2 kit
that address this question. I know it's been raised by many in the past
- but just curious if there were any changes I missed. Thank you in
advance. Regards, Tim NZ7C

[Elecraft] K2's and switching power supplies

Hi folks -
I would like to know what experiences anyone has had using switching

[Elecraft] K2 has one freq with low swr - all others fine - what to check

2006-02-07 Thread Tim Logan

Hi all -
I have a K2 connected to a separate KPA/100 - KAT/100 box. Any frequency
on my rig will tune with an SWR of 1.5 or less EXCEPT in the 7.200 MHz
area where it only hits about 3.7 - 1.0. It seems odd to me that only
such an isolated freq range would do thisso it makes me wonder if
there is something within the rig I need to check.vrs blaming it on
my wire loop which has served me so well.

Being a guy whose highest technical acheivement is turning on a
soldering iron - I would like a suggestion for where to start and how to
proceed checking out my rig for this particular issue. Could someone
offer a suggestion? Thanks very much in advance.

What if I found a small fan and placed it where the speaker should be

[Elecraft] KPA100 - left, right, counter clockwise?

2005-07-04 Thread Tim Logan

Hi folks -
I wonder if somebody can confirm part of the instructions on page 47 of
the KPA100 manual. I have the KPA100 connected to my K2. The KPA100 is
lying with the heat sink down and the fan to the rear next to my K2. In
this position all component labels are upside down.

The errata for page 47 says to touch the left side of R12 (the lead
closest to RFC5). If you were looking at the board with the component
levels right side up this would be the RIGHT side of R12.

SO - this makes me wonder about R6. When the manual says rotate counter
clockwise does this mean counterclockwise when you are looking at the
components from a position where all the component labels are upside
down? It seems that it must based on how the left side of R12 is
described. What is correct?

Thanks for any help!

[Elecraft] Why is K2 so easy to send cw with?

2005-06-20 Thread Tim Logan

Hello fellow Elecraft addicts -
I've been using my Icom 706 a lot lately while I build the amp for my
K2. As an 18- 20wpm cw novice I seem to have FAR more difficulty
SENDING cw on the 706 then I do on the K2. I could swear it's not my
imagination. After 30min on the 706 - a switch over to sending on the K2
makes it feel like I just jumped into a Formula I from an old truck.
Are there factors that make one radio far easier to send cw with than
another or is it just my imagination? If so - what are the factors that
affect how sending cw feels? Thanks folks.

[Elecraft] KPA100 in EC2 question - any reverse steps?

2005-06-05 Thread Tim Logan

Hi folks -
I am at page 21 of the KPA100 manual. I will be placing the am in my EC2
with the KAT100. My K2 is number 4667. On page 21 it begins to discuss
the internal ribbon cable connections.

My question is this. If I follow the KAP100 manual will I have to
reverse any of the steps from this point on if I will be using the amp
externally? Good advice on the reflector seems to be to build the amp,
remove the current K2 top with the battery and AT etc and check out all
amp functions as if the final product would be a K2/100.

I am just wondering if this means that any steps will have to be
reversed or desoldered when I get to the remote connection stage.
Thanks for any input in advance.

[Elecraft] power to remote KPA100/KAT100 question

2005-05-08 Thread Tim Logan

Hi folks -
I am in the process of building a remote KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2
enclosure. The KAt100 is done and I am starting the amp.

I have read Lyle and Bob's excellent descriptions of the connections
between the K2 and the remote unit but in either case I believe (maybe I
missed it) the KPA100 has a separate power cord from the K2. I would
like to have one power cord with a Y connection to the KPA100 - and
have the KAT100 get it's power internally in the EC2 from the KPA/100. I
would like to be able to have all three modules (the K2, the KPA100, and
KAT100) turn on via the front on/off switch on the K2.

Is there any reason I should NOT do it this way or a preferred power
on sequence? Thanks folks.

[Elecraft] K60XV alignment question

Hi folks -
I have all options installed in K2 and all are working extremely well. I
am just finishing up with the K60XV. In doing the alignment I get a
slightly low voltage reading on 5300kHZ of .79 (where the manual says it
should no be less than 1.0 on page 11). All other voltages are within
range. Is this a significant issue or should I leave well enough
alone.rather than do the VCO alignment again from the K2 manual

[Elecraft] Insatll SSB and things go dead - question

2005-02-05 Thread Tim Logan

Hello all -
My basic K2 #4667 was operating on cw EXTREMELY well (audio outstanding
by the way compared to two prior K2's).

However, today I finished and installed the SSB board. W2-W3and C167
were removed from the RF board per instructions. According to the menu
the SSB board is communicating with the K2. However I literally hear
nothing but very quiet unchanging background noise. Before WWV was
knocking my ears off at 10 o'clock on the AF knob. If I remove the
antenna there is no change in sound. If I remove the SSB board the
background sound comes up but I still don't to hear anything including WWV.

What SHOULD I be able to hear in cw mode with W2-3 cut and C167 removed
and the SSB board off? I first need to determine if I may have harmed
the RF board when removing the 3 items, but I do not not what it should
be capable of with C167 removed. If it should be pretty much just like
it was prior to cutting the jumpers and C167 then I have a major
problem. (Shoot - that baby was running dyno-mite on cw!)

If I can confirm the RF board is still OK then I will put SSB board back
in and start voltage checks. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: [Elecraft] Q7 base problem solved! Thanks Don

Don Lerche was right and I thank him so much! Although I could not SEE
the short I disconnected the T4 windings one by one until the Q7 base
resistance shot up to 2.6k. Then I resoldered one by one - measuring Q7
after each new solder joint. Finally I redid all of the page 71
measurements and I'm back in business! It is so nice to be able to get
some help on a Sunday afternoon and go to Alignment Part III

Don Lerche wrote:

Tim,

Yes, the resistance should be between 2500 3000 ohms. As you say a short
on Q7 itself should be obvious, so if nothing looks bad, then after having a
look at the schematic a good place to look may be around T4. There is a
ground connection to winding 3-4, so a short around here to winding 5-6
would put a ground onto the base of Q7.

Good hunting

Hi folks -
I just completed the RF board and am doing the resistance checks on page 71.
For Q7 base it requires 2.5 - 3.0 k. My DVM onky meausres .4 ohms - no
where near 2300 - 3000 ohms. I assume this means I have a short. There is
no short between the soldered pads on Q7 and I rechecked the mounting screw
hardware to make sure each part was correctly in place. All other
measurements for the RF board are OK.
Not being anything but a paint-by-number solderer, am I reading the table
correctly? That does mean 2500 - 3000 ohms write? If so, I very stumped
because a short on this component should be very obvious - but I don't see
it. Can someone offer some help please? Thank you very much in advance.

[Elecraft] #4667 on the air and THANKS GARY!

As usual Gary Surrency was a model of patience. I was having trouble
calibrating S-HI and Gary dutifully put me through every analytical step
he could (all to no avail) - then he asked me if I was turning the RF
gain all the way counter clockwise before callibratiing.. Well, of
course yours truly had not (and apparently cannot read)! Dah! Gary
was as patient and polite as can be and deserves all the kudos everyone
so often gives him. It's nice to be a K2 op again!!

[Elecraft] K2 problem at page 43 of Rev. F manual - need some help

Hi folks -
I will confess I just sent Gary a query about this, but you know how it
goes when it is after working hours and you would sorta' like to solve
the problem tonight hi hi! Anyway, if someone truly in the know can shed
insight on either of the following this evening I would be most
appreciative.

I am at the stage where the K2 is pluged in for the first time (my
favorite part!!!). All tests up to the 2nd column of page 43 have passed
(ie up to the paragraph titled RF PROBE ASSEMBLY). Bands, change, menus
seem to work, voltage display works, VFO works. PF! 2 work etc.
HOWEVER two problems have appeared. Before I go through every trouble
shooting step in the manual maybe someone has been there done that already?

1 - The PRE annunciator is turned on for all bands - even after a reset
to factory defaults. The PRE/ATT switch works and activates relays. If I
go through each band and turn off the PRE and then turn the K2 off and
on again, the bands WILL retain the status of having the PRE turned off.
However, I do not understand why it defaulted to being turned on from
the factory settings. Can you point me in the right direction to
understand this?

2 - The RATE switch does not change rates. I checked the secondary menu
and the basic 3 rate default is set. Can you suggest where I start to
solve this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 problem at page 43 of Rev. F manual - need some help

2005-01-18 Thread Tim Logan

Jim -
Your thoughts helped in narrowing the question. The A=B switch does
function - so I pulled the rig apart and looked all around the rate
switch for any possible solder joint problem but saw none. For good
measure thought I reheated/soldered the 4 mounting posts for the
switch. I also checked continuity on the bottom side of the switch. In
normal position each pair of top and bottom solder points show
continuity. If I depress the switch and check continuity then the
diagonal point also shows continuity. Alas, the rate switch and lock
still do not function. I shall await with anticipation the words of Gary
the Great One tomorrow :-) The nice thing about electronics is that one
way or another it all boils down to something being on or off - ie
anything is solvable. Sure am enjoying building this K2 with a 4000+
serial number. My first was in the early 2000's and did not have all the
mods nicely built in to the kit! Thanks for the input Jim.

James T. Jim Rogers, W4ATK wrote:

Tim, I think the rig defaults to PRE ON. The only bands where I routinely do
not use the preamp are 40 sometimes, 80, and 160. The rate switch is one of
the switches read by U2 on the control panel. Look for a cold solder joint
there. Rate and A=B/SPLIT share the same pull up resistor on RP1 so if
A=B/SPLIT does its thing the the trouble is around the rate switch. The
switch data is returned to the MCU serially so the fact that all the other
switches are working excludes U2 and the serial path to the MCU.

[Elecraft] EC2 for batteries charger KAT100

2005-01-09 Thread Tim Logan
The EC2 could be a nice companion to a K2/100 when using for portable
QRP if it contained the KAT100; more amp-hours in battery storage as
compared to the single 2.9 A/H battery in a traditional K2; and
battery/monitoring /charging cicuitry. If anyone has done this I would
like to hear from you. It would probably be best to reply on the
reflector so others can hear about your efforts. Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] K2 Control Board U1 component number correct?

2005-01-08 Thread Tim Logan

Hi folks -
My K2 inventory lists Control Board component U1 as SA602AN. The actual
part supplied is SA612AN. I assume this is a correct part but would like
to verify before soldering to the board. I'd check with Elecraft
support but it's the weekend - anybody know by chance? Thank you in advance.

[Elecraft] An amazing manual and building procedure

2005-01-08 Thread Tim Logan
As I once again delve into building a K2 knowing little if anything
about how they work I am again reminded of one of the truly amazing
features of the K2 - the manaul(s) and building procedures. It takes a
very together mind to create an assembly process that literally anyone
can follow and even teach themselves to troubleshoot. The approach to
kitting this radio is just as amazing as the capability of the
resulting rig. Just had to say it once again! My compliments to Wayne,
Eric, and I believe Lyle for such excellent manuals and organized
building procedures!

[Elecraft] Latest status of dirft in K2/100 vs K2 with 100w amp separate

2004-12-26 Thread Tim Logan

Hi folks -
Could some one bring up to date on what to expect for drift if I build a
new K2/100 vs a K2 with the 100w amp separated? My understanding is that
initially it was a better idea to keep the amp separate - that
combining it in the box with the K2 increased drift - a bit frustrating
if you have $1600 tied up in a K2/100. With all the continiual mods and
improvements what should a builder of a new current K2/100 now expect if
he builds it proberly for drift? Thanks for any input.

--

I have a K2/100 with the current drift compensation circuits all new K2's
have.

If I really hammer it with very high duty cycle transmissions at 100 watts
with the amplifier mounted IN the K2, I've measured drift as high as 50 Hz.
On most bands it's 20 Hz or less. That's hitting it so hard the internal
temperature of the K2 rises near 60C and the heat sink is too hot to hold my
hand on it. I never run the K2 anywhere near that hard in normal operation.
I abused mine specifically to test the PLL Temperature compensation
circuit before it was added to the production kits.

Also, that's after a 15 minute warm-up in receive. From a dead cold start,
the drift might approach 100 Hz on the worst bands with the rig sitting in
the shack.

The total drift is a function of both the BFO and PLL Reference Oscillator
drifts. On mine, they tend to add on the higher bands, which produces the
up-to-50Hz number, and cancel on the lower bands. I believe that's typical
behavior of all K2's. On the lower bands the drift on my K2 is too small to
measure reliably - less than 20 Hz.

Rigs may differ slightly, of course. For a short time after it was
discovered that the extra heat from the KPA100 was causing excessive drift,
some ops did avoid mounting it in the K2 for best stability. My K2 drifted
over 200 Hz on the higher bands, running the KPA100, before the mods were
incorporated.

There's no longer any reason to separate them for that purpose now. I'd be
surprised if you saw any difference in a new unit with the KPA100 in or out
of the K2.

And the heavy abuse did not harm the KPA100 at all.

Of course, some of the other rigs advertise less than 50 Hz. The tradeoff is
a 'noisier' receiver because they use a fully-synthesized local oscillator
with a fixed reference oscillator in a temperature-controlled oven.
