I like the Happy Hacker keyboards but it may be a bit pricey for this.

cybergys.com sells a generic black mini ps/2 keyboard for $25 or
so. Also good.

in short, I had the RF IN and ANT1 connections reversed!

Ah yes, I seem to remember whining on this very reflector when my
brand-new K2 didn't hear very well during initial alignment. Turns
out it helps if you flip the coax switch over to the main antenna
from the dummy load.

2005-02-05 Thread Ward Willats

I am building the KPA 100. I have just tried the resistance measurements on
page 41 of the Alignment and Installation.

Sounds like you are maybe running into the photoelectric effect on
the PA transistors too. Do you have a strong light on the workbench?

2005-02-04 Thread Ward Willats
Now: I removed Z1 and found the voltage measured at the collectors
of Qs 1 and 2 to be -0.4V (J3+ is ok now). I don't know where it
could come from.

Hi Gerhard:

Dunno if this is related, but I got a small voltage J3 by shining a
bright light on the final transistors. There is some sort of
photoelectric effect.

Your numbers are close to what I measured then:

Re: [Elecraft] wobbly knob

My K2 AF gain knob is getting really wobbly, and seems to be getting
worse.

Yeah, same here. And the power pot is a little wobbly too -- I guess
because these two are the most used (for me). My radio is about 13
months old.

Think I am too lazy to actually fix it until it breaks, but maybe
worth ordering a replacement or two to have on hand when it does...

RE: [Elecraft] OPT1 low volume - solved

2004-10-08 Thread Ward Willats
Many of you offered help with the low signals I was getting when I
switched in OPT1 on my newly built SSB adapter.

Thanks to Gary explaining how I could just whack on the signal path
through the ladder filter with one of my multimeter probes (not even
connected to the multimeter) and use the resulting static and noise
to trace the circuit, I worked backwards from the output jack and
located a capacitor (C11) whose lead was broken off and floating in a
small fillet of solder on the top of the board -- so it looked fine
but made a crappy connection. I've no idea how I achieved this
miraculous condition, but locating it with this technique took maybe
all of a minute and a half. Wow.

Since this cap is a 103, Elecraft even had the prescient (but spooky)
foresight to include a spare! A few moments with the soldering iron
and now all is well and the rest of the SSB checkout went without a
hitch.

I am embarrassed to say how much time I spent chasing this. Hope
someone, someday, finds this post in the archive and it saves them
much headache.

Thanks to Gary and all of you.

[Elecraft] #26 vs #28 wire

2004-10-02 Thread Ward Willats
Today I decided to rewind T2 on my SSB adapter in an effort to
correct my low signal level -- even though it looked fine and
beeped-out well and yadda yadda.

Anyway, I have LOTS of #26 wire left over from the K2 and KPA100. Any
reason I can't use that instead of #28 to do this? (Is the difference
enough to drop a turn or something?)

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Ooops -- think I fried the IF amp...

2004-09-20 Thread Ward Willats
Well, I finished the SSB adapter for my K2/100 tonight and slapped
in. All worked until I switched in the SSB filter then signals
dropped to almost nothing.

OK, problem in the filter, so I got out some wire and a cap and was
jumping the end of the SSB filter chain with the middle (and it did
seem there was a problem in the second half..)

Then without thinking I jumpered the first third of the chain at CD
to the xtal output jack at P3/J10 neatly bypassing the step-down of
T2 and slamming some nice voltage onto the main board and, I assume,
into the IF amp.

Signals were very loud for a moment though!

Now all the audio is gone in all modes -- CW, SSB..ack!

Is it worth banging around trying to chase this, or shall I just
embrace my shame and send the whole mess off to Elecraft?

[Elecraft] KPA100 Tightening the finals...

2004-07-04 Thread Ward Willats
Just finished the KNB2 for my K2 (a birthday present from the in-laws
-- yea!) and while I was inside the K2 to install it I tightened up
the screws on the KPA100 finals per Elecraft's recommendation, since
I've been using the radio for about 6 months now and this was
probably overdue. They all took a little snugging up, maybe a little
less than 1/8 turn.

My question is: will they stay tight now for all time? Or do I have
to check them now and then? What's the theory on the thermal cycling
here and how it effects these screws?

Just wondering...

Not sure if this has anything to do with what you are seeing, but...

How close is your work light to the finals? Does the measurement
