[Elecraft] Low Frequency Modulation of Side Tone.

2005-01-22 Thread jeff_list
I just noticed that on 80 and 17m the side tone in my K2 has a low frequency
modulation superimposed over the normal frequency. When I discovered this I
was trying to call a Panama station on 80m. I cranked the power up to 100w
and started my call. The rig sounded like it was going nuts. It even locked
into a repeating string of dits or das. I do not remember which. I turned
the rig off to get it to stop. I suspect the repeating transmission is
unrelated to the side tone problem because I found that my computer keying
cable was part way out of the jack. It must have been bad timing that it
came out just as I was calling.

The amplitude of the modulation on the side tone increases with power
output, and is only noticeable at ~60 to 100 w. On 80m if I key down for
several seconds the modulation decreases. It sounds like a capacitor
charging. On 17m, the sound is much louder and does not decrease with time.

The output signal sounds fine in another receiver.

I tested using a dummy load. I also turned off my power supply and computer
monitor, and used a battery to power the K2. Neither helped.

I built the KPA100 this last spring, and have not noticed this before.
However, I have been running mostly QRP so I do not know when this problem
showed up. KPA100 is located in an EC2 with the KAT2. The connecting cable
is 32 inches long.

What should I look for to fix this?

RE: [Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] Big K2 (or K2B - B for Big)]

2004-12-27 Thread jeff_list
The current generation of control software and logging software do not work
together well. I use N3FJP for logging. Using a control program would make
it impossible to gather data into N3FJP's program. A hardware remote would
not have this problem.

All,

If a larger remote front panel is the proper answer, then why not simply
use one of the K2 enabled software control programs which can add function
as well as size and flexibility? The N4PY software and Ham Radio Deluxe are

two examples. The 'panel' can be as large as your computer screen.
Apologies to those who really want to press 'real' buttons (and that
includes me - I am quite hardware oriented. but I don't think that a 'BIG'
K2 panel is feasible anytime soon).

I wonder how much of the desire for a bigger K2 could be satisfied with a
remote front panel? I have often thought of building a remote head for the

KIO2 using the $40 Olimex PIC front panel board (now from sparkfun.com) for

use with a backpack.

The same idea could be used for a bigger front panel, which could also
provide two VFO knobs (though not stereo dual reception). I think only
the AF gain and IF gain are impaired, and the AF gain is easily worked
around by using an audion amplifier in the remote head.

[Elecraft] Microphone Resistor

2004-12-27 Thread jeff_list
My new MD2 microphone should arrive tomorrow, and I am trying to decide what
to do about the resistor between pin 6 and pin 1. I have a hand microphone
with a Heil HC-4 and a N0MF pre-amp in it that I want to continue to use. It
has a 1k resistor between pin 1 and pin 6 in per the instructions for the
pre-amp.

It seams I have three options.

1. Remove the 1k resistor from the hand microphone, and install the 5.6k
resistor in the K2. Will this provide enough current to run the pre-amp in
the hand microphone?

2. Add the 5.6k resistor to the K2 and leave the resistor in the hand
microphone. Will the hand microphone then draw too much current?

3. Put the 5.6k resistor in the MD2. I know this will work, but requires
fitting the resistor into the connector.

What is the best option?

[Elecraft] MD2 vs. TT 705 Microphone

2004-12-18 Thread jeff_list
I currently have a Ten Tec 705 Microphone that I use with my K2, but am
considering ordering the MD2 before the sale pricing is over.

How does the sound quality of these two microphones compare? How are the
ergonomics of the MD2? I currently use the PTT button in the base of the
705. Is the PTT button on the body of the MD2 convenient when the microphone
is in a desk stand? I like the coiled cord on the 705. Does the straight
cord on the MD2 get in the way?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] In ear monitors

2004-11-24 Thread jeff_list
I have been using the Koss Plug earphones with my K2. When the earplugs are
new they are not very comfortable. When the earplugs wear out they get
reasonably comfortable, but do not block out sound as well.

I am thinking of getting a pair of custom fitted in-ear monitors. The only
ones I have found that are reasonably priced are the Challenger phones
available here:

http://store.yahoo.com/earplugstore/chmisearph.html

or

http://69.36.163.112/racing.mainpage.html

Has anyone ever used these? What do you think?

For the price of these earphones I could get the ProSet - K2. Any comments
about the comfort, quality, and sound isolation of this headset would be
appreciated.

[Elecraft] FS: Ten-Tec 705 Microphone

2004-11-21 Thread jeff_list
I have one Ten-Tec 705 Microphone for sale. It is in good used condition.

It currently has an eight pin connector wired for an Elecraft K2. I will
supply the original four pin connector for use with Ten-Tec rigs. I am
willing to install the four pin connector if the buyer prefers, but I
currently do not have a Ten-Tec rig available to test the installation.

I can send pictures by e-mail.

Price is $80, and I will cover basic shipping to any of the continuous 48
states.

[Elecraft] Cost Effective Balun

2004-11-03 Thread jeff_list
I have read a lot about baluns, and still cannot decide what to get. I have
a KAT100 and, want to experiment with several antennas fed with open wire
line.

From all the discussions of baluns I have a formed a few impressions.

1. For QRP operation the balun is probably not needed.
2. Use a 1:1 balun unless you know your antenna system has high
impedance on all bands of operation.
3. For multi-band operation make the balun really big to handle any
waste heat.

With these ideas in mind I am tempted to get a super heavy duty balun like
the ones form DX Engineering. The $100 plus price tag on these big baluns is
encouraging me to take a look at cheaper alternatives.

One alternative is to make a heavy duty balun form a kit. Any comments on
the various kits available? Two sources I have located are:
http://www.amidoncorp.com/aai_cost_experimenter.htm and
http://thewireman.com/index.shtml

Another alternative is Elecraft's BL1. Is this little balun really up to
100W service for multi-band antennas? Has anyone found a good enclosure for
the BL1? Can a switch be used to switch from 1:1 to 1:4 configurations?

Thanks for taking one more look at this old topic.

Has anyone been able to compare the new HexKey to keys made by Begali or
Schurr? I have a Schurr Portable Wabbler and have had my eyes on the
Graciella Vertical Key. Just wondering how thy compare.
