Re: [Elecraft] CWT Calibration

2020-07-16 Thread ktalbott
I use CWT to ensure that I do NOT zero beat the caller. I want my signal to
be at a tone noticeably above or below that of everyone else (very important
to QRP op in a pileup). I haven't tried to quantify the hz/bar, I simply
tune to around 5 ticks away and it seems to work well.

Can you hear a 25 Hz pitch difference when it's hot on the short wave bands?
If so, congratulations! You can admit it if you used a frequency counter.

In my opinion CWT is a very good tool to get close to another station
quickly. And no one realy no one has complained to me in a QSO so far that I
was 25 Hz away from his transmitting frequency.

1) Wouldn't it be better to use one of the ISM bands? Then licensing is not
a problem. I'd feel uncomfortable giving radios that operate in the ham
bands to people without a license. There are bands 6.765-6.795MHz,
13.553-13.567MHz, and 26.957-27.283 close to our 40, 20, and 12/10 meter
bands, and a number of bands in the VHF+ range. The 13MHz one is used by the
HiFER experimenters already.
There are also the LowFER and MedFER bands.

2) Does the pixie not meet the requirements? They're cheap ($3-5 on eBay),
low power (~150mW), and have QSK. The kits you buy don't have a volume
control, but that is simple to add.

Re: [Elecraft] Windcamp X3 Li-ion Battery Box usage?

2019-09-23 Thread ktalbott
I have one and enjoy it. I does make the KX3 with rollover handles,
heatsink, and cover 1/3 taller and heavy - about 3 lbs. 12 oz. The battery
box has a second coaxial jack to power accessories. It has a balancing
charger connection for use with a RC airplane/car/boat charger. I have an
AC/DC input charger which is very convenient at home or in the field. It
comes with a ubiquitous 12.6 volt 110 VAC charger which does the job but
does not balance the cells. It is made for flat-top cells. I think button
cells would be too long. The battery lasts FOREVER. In fact it might be
overkill. I'll let you do the math, but for me it is more than enough for a
typical 48 hour CW contest (including naps). Your mileage will vary
depending upon the quality of the cells you select.

At first blush it seems expensive. As an accessory for your $1500 radio it
is a bargain. It is well made and creates a well-integrated package.

I keep seeing these on eBay. They look neat with packaging that matches,
and attaches to, the KX3. Looks like a good way to have an external battery
pack versus keeping batteries inside the KX3. Wonder if anyone has tried
one of these?

Windcamp says to only use the 18650 batteries with a flat anode. The only
ones that seem to meet that specification are the 3400mah NCR18650B variety
made for Panasonic. There are other 18650 batteries available with higher
capacity (5000+mah), but they have the smaller rounded anode like normal AA
batteries. Any thoughts on this?

Mike, if you do build a KX2 battery, make sure to include a protection
circuit. Some links and other info here:

IMHO, use 3S1P pack, 12.6/11.1 fully charged/nominal. The 4S1P pack
16.8/14.4 - voltage is too high.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2/KX3 DC Charging

2018-11-16 Thread ktalbott
There are many inexpensive chargers available for the 3S1P battery pack
(12.6v charged, 11.1v nominal. The pack has charge controller PCB to prevent
over charge or under discharge. It does NOT provide the connector for
balancing the cells. I bet you have one of the 12.6V Li-ion chargers there
now. It probably looks like a 12.6V wall wart with an LED in it. Best DC-DC
charger option is RC plane equipment like iMax B6 at ~$29 (Amazon). The
more expensive ones also have AC input so you can use them anywhere. If you
aren't addicted to the shrink wrapped packs, inexpensive 3-cell 18650
battery holders are available on eBay that allow you to manage your cells
independently. BTW, you will probably need to change connectors to APP.

There's not a whole lot of info out there, as well as not many making DC
- DC chargers that will work on LiPo or LiFePO4's.
I went down this road a couple months back looking for something to run my
KX2 mobile out in the boonies and still be
able to charge without use of a geny. I stumbled upon an outfit out of
VKland that seems to fit the bill.

Company called REDARC:
https://www.redarc.com.au/battery-chargers/in-vehicle-chargers They
do have a US distributor now
from what I can tell. Their unit also has Solar input - which would be
a plus - and designed to handle the new
"smart alternators" that are common on newer vehicles...I didn't know a
thing about these newer alternators until
I found this site. This is a common deal in VK with all the
"overlanders". Dual batteries to run the fridge, radios, and other camp
assy's while in the "outback". Charge off of solar while parked, 12vdc
while in motion, to keep the LiFePO4's (aux battery) charged.

I've used a goal zero inverter, and it works ok - if I don't use it and
any radio gear at the same time. ;-)

KX1 Replacement?
Is there any chance that Elecraft will come up with something to replace the
KX1?  I am not aware of anything else on the market that fits this niche.
The closest are probably the various excellent KD1JV rigs.  Following are
some things I like about the KX1:

*   Autotuner
*   Up to 4-bands
* Knobs for tuning, etc. - I really like the filter knob!
*   Very Low Power consumption
*   Small & lightweight
*   Through-hole kit construction

Building the KX1 was a joy & I still get a thrill every time I turn it on.
It is a great rig.  Perhaps with a full frequency display (LCD?) & a full 5
(or 10!) watts of power it could be even better.

Re: [Elecraft] Equipment Storage and operation

2018-07-05 Thread ktalbott
We engineered electronics packages for these types of environment, from
desert to arctic. Keys for success:
1- Inside of housing must be designed to route any condensation away from
the electronics. Design ENCOURAGES condensation on normally cooler
enclosure surfaces, not the electronics.
2- A compartment heater (actually a high wattage, low value resistor) is
ALWAYS energized to keep interior air temperature and temperature of
electronic assemblies slightly above exterior.
3- Compartment must be absolutely air tight so as not to allow breathing as
atmospheric pressure changes.
Condensation that occurs collects on housing and drains to bottom of
enclosure. If cooling is required, it must be done with heat exchanger to
avoid ingress of outside air.
BTW, mission critical equipment was housed in nitrogen purged compartments,
including conduit which is major source of humid air flow! We required that
equipment stored during construction must have compartment heaters
energized.
So, it can be done.

FD was a hoot from the farm here in southside Virginia. The KX2, an Alpha
Delta dipole, and N1MM+ on a $99 Kodak laptop performed flawlessly. The most
amazing thing was 10m! Since I embarked on my QRP CW adventure 4 years ago I
had logged not a single 10m contact. This weekend I bagged 26 Qs on 10m, and as
many on 15m. My total of 212 in 6 hours of operation certainly thrilled me! I
really miss the FD social events of the late 1980's in Greensboro, NC. But

A large group gathered for the K6SRA 3A/SCV FD operation in San Jose. Despite
temperatures in the mid-90 s and blistering sunshine, we had many visitors,
including a lot of curious non-hams.

This tends to be a social event with lots of conversation and ad-hoc
experimentation with radios and antennas, so I won t be bragging about our
claimed Field Day score. Still, a good time was had by all, with vast
quantities of water and other liquids consumed to avoid heat stroke.

Late Saturday afternoon I undertook a brief solo trek to exercise the KX2. I
had intended to climb a nearby hill. Given the outrageous temperatures, I
settled for a picnic table on the other side of the parking lot, beneath a
large oak.

Normally I would have tossed a wire into this tree. Instead I used a prototype
2-band, 4 whip, in keeping with the two QSOs per foot challenge we proposed
in a recent Elecraft newsletter. I made 10 QSOs over the course of about 20
minutes (that s 3.00 Q/ft, for those keeping score), ranging from KH6 to the
East Coast.

Overall, conditions were not thrilling. 20 meters was pretty much single-hop
until Saturday evening. 15 m was deceased until this morning when, back at the
home QTH, I noticed things picking up on this band around the same time as some
sporadic-E kicking in on 6 m.

because of its ability to add multi-path into a stronger signal. (This test may
not be conclusive depending upon how fast the risetime of an EMP actually is.
Should be OK for slower CME). For those legacy radios in storage, a simpler
solution might be to wrap them in a couple layers of aluminum foil! A more
complicated solution is to build a house like mine: passive solar, 10 inch
concrete walls & ceiling, 4 feet underground. I will be looking for you after

OT: Bioennopower LiFePO4 teardown?
There are two sets of cables so that the user has the option of using either
Power Poles, or their 110-220 volt charger. I asked them about the cables and
was told they are simply connected in parallel. You can use which ever is
convenient for you.

I agree Kev. My bienno has powerpole for load, coaxial for charge (12.6 vdc). I
don't think the coaxial should/could be used for load.Ken ke4rg

I don't know... are you sure the cables just connect in parallel? Maybe
simple enough to check with an ohmmeter but here's what I see on their site
for this battery:

Charge Connector: DC Plug
Discharge Connector:  Anderson Powerpole

This tells me each connector has a different purpose. In fact, considering
the electronics built into their batteries and the individual cells it kind
of makes sense to me that one cable is a gozinta and the other's a gozouta.
I've always charged with the barrel and discharged with the power poles.
