[Elecraft] Heil PR-781 and K4
Hello all, I'm looking for feedback from anyone using a Heil PR-781 microphone with a K4. It's not on Heil website's "Elecraft compatible" list, however, HRO's catalog does list Elecraft in the list of "elite" class radios for which the PR-781 is designed. I also saw a Youtube video of a K4 operator using a PR-781 and seemingly having a great experience. Thanks in advance. Ron, W1TK P.S. I'm currently using a Yaesu MD-1 which seems to work great. As I re-design my shack though, I'm going to have a second mic and boom for the K4. [Elecraft] AX-1 -- with and without counterpoise
I've just run two tests of my WSPR/AX-1 set-up with and without a counterpoise. Each test ran 24 hours over the last couple of days. Here are the results: COUNTERPOISE? YES NO --- --- Total Contacts152 129 Maximum Distance (km) 15,720 17,276 Median Distance 2,1371,823 Median SpotQ 446 398 Where SpotQ = Kilometers / [(2 Watts x (SNR in DB + 36))/36) ] The WSPR circuit's ground and SMA connectors are apparently providing enough of a counterpoise to propagate a respectable signal. [Elecraft] Elecraft AX-1 Whip Antenna
I've been impressed by how well my little AX-1 whip antenna performs on 20 meters. Here's a photo of the rig: https://gruner.com/k4rhg/andover_ma.png and the propagation map: https://gruner.com/k4rhg/wspr_2watts_sep16_2022.png A friend, Derek Rowell (AK1WI), gave me a two-watt WSPR kit he had designed -- easy and fun to build. I connected the unit to the AX-1 sitting in a window sill facing west and strung the out-of-the-box counterpoise over a lamp shade and bed headboard. No idea what the SWR is, but it must be pretty good. I immediately began receiving propagation reports and within 24 hours had reports from 240 unique stations. The farthest was VK5ARG (17,276 km) with a SNR of -21. Even though the window faced the west, propagation into Europe was strong with SV9KI (7,800 km) reporting -26 SNR. The propagation report is from http://wspr.rocks/ <http://wspr.rocks/> I've found that WSPR is a great way to evaluate antennas. The AX-1 seems to be performing very well. 73, Ron Gruner K4RHG -- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K2 versus K3 specs
I really enjoy my K2/100. I use it weekly for CWT’s, MST’s & SST’s with N1MM+. I usually operate the tests barefoot but sometimes run a KPA1500 with the K2. The shift/width controls are not as versatile as my K3S but I don’t need em for the 1 hr CW tests. Computer control of the K2 and K3s is essentially the same. I built the K2/100 myself and, as Wayne said, there is some additional fulfillment when using a radio that you assembled yourself. 73//k5mm/ron Sent from my iPad > On Jul 14, 2022, at 5:30 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: > > Complex, multivariate problem Brian, sensitivity being only one variable, > and some of the variables are very subjective. [Elecraft] Just finished KX1
Built the ATU, testing it and suddenly no rf output Fiddled around with the main board, removed ATU. No rf, no rf. Then rf. Then dead again. Seems to be an intermittent, but all my solder work is really good, and tested thoroughly during and after construction, (yes toroids are fine). Not my first kit. The processor seemed pretty loose in the socket. I bent the pins outward, reseated it and now it is firmly in there, was not before. Working now when TUN engaged, but I am not confident it won't crap out again. Any ideas? It's out of the case now, l am not too confident about it now. Put it back in, and it crapped out again. [Elecraft] Update on Interference on 17M
Thanks all for you input and recommendations, helped me submit an "Intruder report" to DARC. I do not think the source is local (power supply, solar systems, Etc.) It's very strong 20+ over S9 and 20 Khz wide, comes and goes at odd times. Best guess is an HF radar. Ron -- Message: 20 Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2022 20:17:10 + From: Michael Carter To: Elecraft Reflector Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Interference on 17M Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" William, I suspect you had an attachment stripped by the reflector. Was it a sound file or spectrum view? Ron, does the RFI occur only on 17M? I presume you've checked other bands? The switch-mode power conversion in PV inverters can generate RFI across a broad spectrum, but it would be unusual to have an isolated spectral peak, even line-broadened, at one discrete frequency in the 18 MHz range. The switching frequencies in power converters are typically much lower. The harmonics of the switching frequency could appear in the 17M band, but those would be weak relative to the fundamental in the few hundred kHz to perhaps 2 MHz range. Ron, do you have HF portable RX capability, even if only temporarily in your car? Some phone calls or emails to other hams in your community would help with local RFI checks. If you dont have Verizon or an alternative wireline company in your area, look into Starlink, still in Beta but I am hearing great reviews from those who have it. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2021 17:47 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Elecraft Digest, Vol 210, Issue 13 Send Elecraft mailing list submissions to elecraft@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at elecraft-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Elecraft digest..." Technicians have been out to his house several times and they acknowledge that there is a problem in his subdivision.? Spectrum has documentation of the outages. The last visit by Spectrum the technician said that the problem was probably caused by a ham in the neighborhood.? ?As far as I know there are no hams near him.? The problem is that Spectrum doesn?t want to spend the time or the resources to fix the problem. It's just easier to blame the neighborhood ham.I explained this to my friend and he recently was told that Spectrum was going to replace the trunk lines and distribution amps in the subdivision.? Oddly, these wide area outages did not include my own house.? They told her the antennas themselves--absent any power--were the problemThe last time I was threatened, I installed chokes and opto-isolaters on our shielded ethernet lines, and after being told they use 14Mhz as their carrier frequency, I have stayed off 20m, only using 100w unless I'm in a rare contest.? Re: [Elecraft] Can the K3 make power without activating Key Out?
If I am understanding correctly, you want to bypass the amp and use low power from the K3 into the tuner in order to tune the antenna. Does the amp have a 'bypass' switch on it? If not, then you can put a switch in the keying line to open it when you want to bypass the amp. If you are looking for an automatic way of doing this, then obviously this isn't it! Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 power reading ?
I see something similar with my (non-Elecraft) amp. The amp's display matches a Bird 43 I had connected with a 12 inch cable from the amp and then goes into an accurate 50 Ohm dummy load. I usually do not leave the Bird in-line, but had this set up for testing the amp when I first got it. The remote LP100 sensor I have is actually on a cable that is about 3 feet from the amp and it usually reads HIGHER than the amp does, even into the same dummy load. Re: [Elecraft] K3- Replacement 12-Volt Power Cable
Dick, Powerwerx is a company that sells Power Poles, but be aware that on Ebay you might find Power Pole 'copies,' not the originals mad by the Anderson company. As for power ratings, yes, there are different power ratings, but the 15, 30 and 45 Amp versions all use the same plastic housing, which means they will connect with one another. Only the actual metal contactors are different sizes. If your K3 is around 3-6 feet from the power supply then the 12 Gauge wire should be fine. For longer runs, you might want to consider a 10 Gauge cable due to the voltage drop. For some good info on them, go to the Powerwerx site here: https://powerwerx.com/help/powerpole-connectors 73, Ron WA2EIO On 11/28/2020 2:57 PM, RVZ via Elecraft wrote: Hi Guys, Please advise what options I have for purchasing replacement 12-Volt power supply cables for the K3 with the power connector already attached. [Elecraft] KX3 Calibration Question
After several years use I decided to check the calibration of my KX3, following the procedures in the manual, using a function generator controlled by a GPS disciplined reference signal, adjusting REF CAL to zero beat. Then I checked WWV 10MHz I was about 230 Hz off frequency based on PX3 display. Looking at the 10MHz signal from the function generator, I was off by the same amount based on PX3. I adjusted the REF CAL setting to get both the 10MHz WWV and Function Gen 10MHz centered on the PX3 (same REF CAL setting). I checked with my old HP8640B at 10MHz, it was within 20Hz. With WWV I could see both the center and side bands, I was using the center as my reference. The manual states that following it's procedures accuracy should be within +/- 1 ppm. Re: [Elecraft] Is the Lab599 TX500 a "rip-off" of the KX3?
It is another in an ever-growing line of low-power SDR transceivers. It is carried by Ham Radio Outlet, (they project mid-September delivery) is FCC approved, and will have repair facilities in the U.S. There are some video reviews of it, along with a Groups.io page, and like almost everything else, it has some good points and somebad points and some missing features. It remains to be seen as to how well it will sell. I don't see it as a direct competitor to the KX series though. [Elecraft] KX-3 Powered speaker suggestions?
I prefer to operate without headphones, but find the audio output from my KX-3 to be too weak to be usable, and the rigs' audio amp is not up to driving an external speaker very well. I tried both an amplified Motorola speaker and a small MFJ unit, but when using SSB (10-15 Watts) at home into a beam or into a dummy load I can hear myself quite clearly in the speaker, so RF is getting in somehow. (the rig's Monitor function is not turned on!) I have tried ferrites on both the power and audio lines to the speaker, but they have not helped. This is while using an Astron RS-35 linear supply for both the rig and the speaker. Any suggestions, or powered speaker recommendations? Re: [Elecraft] K3S poor CW keying further investigation
Fewer power supplies (meaning the switching type) have actual terminal bolts to use with ring connectors. If the supply doesn't have that type of connector, then what alternatives are there to being able to use one supply in a station that has more than one high current rig, (even if they are not used at the same time) since the connectors on most of these supplies will take at most only one 10-12 gauge cable? [Elecraft] KPA1500 LOW GAIN FAULT
Tightening inside PL259's with pliers is not desirable, because each Hams definition of "SNUG" occurs at different Torque levels. I want to use my hands to screw them on and off. Also, when you have SO239 chassis mounted "Round" connectors (using one large lock washer), then pliers will loosen them every time. What I do is, treat each connector center pin and threads with Caig DeOxit. I do this on all connectors. Now I can put them on and off by hand and there is no Oxidation causing High Impedance RF connections. I do the same on my outside connectors BUT I do also apply 2 inch lbs. of torque. This keeps them from working loose with vibration and prevents oxidation. [Elecraft] Slightly Unbalanced dipole?
I was asked a question by a newcomer to HF today. After thinking about it, I realized it had never really occurred to me. So I’ll pass it on to the group and see what the antenna gurus think. Is there ever a time where a slight imbalance in a dipole could be beneficial? My first inclination was, No, other than the obvious OCF Dipole. But considering that you could have very different conditions under an antenna, both above the ground and under the ground, not to mention a difference in height above ground. What do you think. Could a couple of inches or so difference in the length of the legs of a dipole ever work in your favor? [Elecraft] Connecting KPA1500 tp Icom Pro3
I would like to connect my KPA-1500 to my backup radio. An Icom Pro 3 while my K3S is vacationing in Watsonville. I have repeatedly asked Support at Elecraft and have never received an answer. Can anyone tell me what cabling is available To connect to the CI-V on the Icom I see a cable on the Elecraft website #CBL-ICOMKEY. I believe it’s priced at $49 which would seem a bit high for a simple RCA to RCA. But I can not get anyone at Elecraft to clarify if that is or is not the proper cable. All I’m looking for is basically auto band switching. My vision isn’t very good anymore so putting one together would not be my first choice.
