[Elecraft] Firmware Beta 2.19

2008-07-23 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

  Hi All

I loaded Beta 2.19 and found the audio level decreased. I had to set AF
gain at 12 o'clock for good level and with Beta 2.16 was good at 9 o'clock
so, I went back to V 2.16 since most of the other changes were for the sub
receiver. Any one else notice this ?

Yes, the AGC threshold is about 10 dB lower than it was (and in line
with earlier DSP code) and the AGC slope may be flatter, so the audio
level will be less.

Please try adjusting the AGC threshold and slope.

The AGC threshold was lowered a bit. If you have the AGC Threshold
(CONFIG: AGC THR) set very low, then perhaps the AGC is reducing the
gain. You can check by turning AGC off. Try increasing AGC THR a bit.

What I do -- and this is a personal preference -- is set the threshold
high enough that there is no AGC action on noise or weakish signals.

Hi Don, Lyle and Vic

In v2.16 I had slope set to 15 and Threshold set to 5.

I reloaded v2.19 and to get audio level up I have set slope to 0 and
threshold to 8. I have not found any 9++ sigs on 20 just yet.

Phil,

I don't notice a change in the audio level on my K3.
Is there a possibility that you had your AGC set for strong AGC action,
and the AGC changes in 2.19/1.87 is creating the difference for you?
I would suggest reloading MCU 2.19 and DSP 1.87, then adjusting the AGC
parameters to suit your preference. Loading the new firmware does not set
the parameters to any default settings, the settings you had before will
still be in effect.

I have my threshold on 5, which in my case doesn't allow any AGC
activation on noise or weak signals. Having the slope on 0 will give you
very minimal AGC action -- mine is presently set to 8.

Well, I don't have any signals here, but with S-6 noise level I find
the maximum threshold (=8) is very aggressive. I would have thought
the threshold would have a greater range than this; i.e., the maximum
value not cutting in as low as s-6 or lower. (But I don't know what
it was with the previous MCU version.)

Is there a graph available relating AGC threshold values (onset of AGC
action) to s-meter readings? Just curious. But really, I guess there
isn't much point in fooling with it until there are a few signals on
the bands.
