[Elecraft] Keyboard plugged into the P3 SVGA works but...

2020-12-09 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I asked the question how do you type live and send CW, and got the answer about
the Menu set to VOX.
That works now but it doesn't work in SSB to automatically offset and send out
CW like with paddles plugged into the K3.
Is this not possible with the keyboard and SVGA?

[Elecraft] KEYBOARD Plugged into P3 SVGA...can't type out live.

2020-12-06 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I can type into the transmit buffer and with ctrl T, transmit the CW. But with
the VOX turned on in the K3s, the typing doesn't go out as I type, but fills up
the buffer. I still have to hit ctrl T to transmit.
Am I missing something that needs to be turned on or off?

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard compatible with P3/SVGA

2019-07-06 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
I can attest that yes there is indeed Mac version of Logitech Options software.
And I agree that the picture-based docs are not great.
The Unifying receivers must be paired on the computer to one of the three
keyboard selector buttons, then removed and plugged into the back of the P3. I
also have a K780, I have the #1 button set to select the left P3, the #2 button
selects the Mac, and #3 selects the right P3.

Note that you need to use a keyboard that is compatible with the Unifying
receiver and not only USB. There are other Logitech keyboards that are
compatible.
If anyone has a question or needs help, just ask.

And, for the record, I do work for Logitech. In fact Options/Mac is one of my
products…

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard compatible with P3/SVGA

2019-07-06 Thread Scott
I have installed the Logitech K780 w/3 Unifying receivers. I had to
come up with two more unifying receivers (very small USB unifying
receiver dongles) as the keyboard only comes with one in the box.
Amazon or Logitech sells them. Best Buy did NOT. One dongle for the
computer and one each for the Elecraft radios. This setup allows me to
control the shack computer and two radios. It eliminates a USB switch
and 4 USB cables behind the "wireless" operating station. The keyboard
has three white keys at the top left for selecting the device you
want... radio or computer. It's a little tricky setting it up and you
MUST use the Logitech Unifying Receiver software to set it up. Not sure
if there is any Apple s/w for this keyboard. IMHO, the documentation on
how to do all this is not very good. The On/Off power switch for the
keyboard in on the right edge towards the front of the keyboard. Took
me a while to find it since there wasn't any useful documentation as to
exactly where it was on the keyboard and the power has to be cycled to
get the keyboard paired with additional unifying receivers. Bottom
line: works great once it's all set up.

Thanks for the recommendation Jack.

Re: [Elecraft] KEYBOARD

2019-02-16 Thread Harry Yingst via Elecraft
I use a 64 key Genovation Keypad via serial and not via the P3, That way the
P3 can have a keyboard plugged into it.
At one time I saw where somone had used a raspberry Pi to make a interface to
go between two keyboarddevices and the P3 but I haven't found it again (that
seems the best way to do it)

This is a way to use a 64 key Genovation keypad to fire off complex
macros to the K3/P3, using a single keypress, from a dedicated pad, as
opposed to having to type in macros, or triggers to the K3/P3 radio
complex via a keyboard.

An example of what can be done would be the "Offset +" macro-- I press a
single button on the Genovation keypad, and the Radio drops into split,
the P3 shifts the CW signal to the left side of the display, while
setting the bandwidth for the P3 to 6 KHz., to show the top part of the
pile up, and then sets the K3 bandwidth to whatever I have set in the
macro, all with a single button press.

I currently have 32 macros programmed up, some for power level setting,
switching VFOs, triggering the K3 memories in CW or Voice, setting K3
bandwidths, contest exchanges, IDs, etc.

There is a spread sheet of macros you can download for use within the
Genovation setup at that URL as well.  I seldom even touch the K3 now,
but to tune, or turn it on, or off.  Most of my K3/P3 operations comes
from the Genovation keypad.

The 48 key Genovation is WONDERFUL!!!  It allows me to do most
everything with the touch of a button or two - from memories, to
filters, to tuning, and more. The only limit is your imagination for
building macros. I never have to reach across the desk to hands-on the
K3 except to turn it on and off. Need more desk edge control? Get a
KPod. BTW I use an old wired keyboard for the P3.

Re: [Elecraft] KEYBOARD

2019-02-15 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Several wireless Logitech keyboards have a very interesting feature - they can
connect to several computers or devices, switching between them by simply
tapping a key on the keyboard. As an example, I use a K780 with a Logitech
Unifying receiver plugged into my P3. A second Unifying receiver is plugged
into my Mac mini. By tapping the ‘F1’ key it talks to the P3, then I tap the
‘F2’ key to work with the Mac. If you have a third device (another computer or
even a second P3) it can connect to that also. It can use Bluetooth or Unifying
for any of the devices, although you need to use the small Unifying receiver
with a P3. There are several keyboards that support this feature at various
prices, including the K780, the Craft, the K600 and a few more. It’s pretty
neat, eliminating the need for several keyboards at once. If you look at
Logitech keyboards, steer clear of the Bluetooth-only keyboards for this use.
The P3 does not support the Bluetooth stack, so plugging a Bluetooth dongle
into the back of the P3 is pretty much a waste of time. It works very well with
the Logitech Unifying USB dongles and keyboards, though.

And, for the record, I work for Logitech these days. What that really means is
that I have tried Logitech keyboards. There may be wireless keyboards made by
other companies that work in this situation also; I just haven’t tried them.

that I cut and pasted from a posting in October 2015.  I think this is a
small subset of keyboards that are compatible with the PX3 and P3 with

How about a wireless (not Bluetooth) keyboard, especially since they apparently
only "come alive" when a key is pressed and there's no cables, etc.

I have an Anker A7723 2.4G that, IIRC, cost me about $20 that I use with my P3.

Out of curiosity, I turned it on, wrapped wire around it and connected it to
the antenna terminal on my KX3. It was just enough antenna to bring WWV in
weakly on 10 MHz and the noise background was just perceptibly higher than with
no wire attached to the antenna term. It still didn't register on the S-meter.

Pressing keys did not produce a rise in background noise on any band from 160-6
meters.

Subject: [Elecraft] Keyboard RF Interference

Can anyone suggest a COMPACT keyboard used with a KX3/PX3 in a “near antenna”
portable environment that you have found to be clean of RF hash?

I purchased a small USB keyboard (Gearhead, from Fry’s), and its matrix scanner
is generating tons of RF garbage — spreading noise spikes at around 8 kHz
intervals all over 40/20M. It’s coming from the keyboard itself. Ferrites on
the USB cord have no discernible impact on the garbage. Touching the metal
bottom plate significantly increases the level of the noise. When portable I’m
generally only 5-15’ from the antenna (a Buddipole).

At least the keyboard was cheap enough to be a non-painful throwaway.

Thanks …

[Elecraft] Keyboard RF Interference

2016-02-21 Thread GRANT YOUNGMAN

Thanks …

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard question

2016-01-19 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Mark,
You can find a list of keyboards that work at
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/px3_keyboard_list_A3.pdf.

I use a logitec k360 wireless.

You can find a partial PX3 chapter detailing the Text Mode operation that
became available in a recent firmware update at
http://www.ke7x.com/The-KX3

Look down toward the bottom of the page for "PX3 Text Mode pdf download"

Hello,

I am looking for a keyboard to use with KX3/PX3 combo.

I am looking for a keyboard that has the following properties and was
hoping that someone might have a suggestion:

   - Compact (similar to the Logitech K810)
   - Backlit

   - Well constructed

I found the SIIG JK-US0911-S1 Industrial/Medical Grade Washable Backlit

apparently wont (or might not) work.

2015-08-08 Thread Jerry Moore
Paul,
Will this be fixed so that operators can run full resolution with an
external monitor while running high speed CW via a keyboard connected to the
P3 and not be affected?
Can it be fixed with firmware or will it require different hardware?

I'm close to ordering my rig and don't want to be bitten by this.

Thanks in advance.

Hah! That did it, Paul. Now I'm not suffering character loss, even the
double l in hello gets sent every time I've tried it. The quick brown fox
is happy, too.

Oddly, in the several times I've typed the typical quick brown fox, I
haven't seen the data delay either.

What a difference!

It seems that you have revealed a way to avoid the data loss problem. Thank

K3/P3/SVGA keyboard in live CW QSOs.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard Issue - I wonder how many folks have had buyers

2015-08-04 Thread Jerry Moore
Hi Marc,

All speculation and conjecture on my part.

Looking at the block diagrams for the digital I/O boards looks like (a
total guess on my part) you are experiencing an issue related to the rig
design. My understanding is the MCU code runs in a big loop (likely with
many subloops). I would expect that future designs would likely have two MCU
rather than one if the K3* is starting to see latency in external control
type I/O. Personal computers are designed to be interrupt driven where most
industrial grade type gear run programming loops. The advantage to the way
industrial gear is designed is the raw speed they can achieve. The
challenges come in when integrating other systems that need more time from
the MCU. Depending upon how the DSP and other features are integrated they
may require high MCU time which would leave less available to things like
I/O. Of course I have no clue how the K3* gear is programmed or works. I'm
just guessing based on the block diagram and my intuition based on
experience. I'd expect Elecraft might try to tweak the code a bit to help
the I/O, however, depending on the system design it's a balancing act.

As I stated, just a guess.

With regard to using wireless gear. I'm a computer guy with a strong
electronics background. I've found most consumer electronics gear to be very
susceptible to RF. I'm like you in that I want plug n play setups, however,
I still use a laptop with my Radio station for lookups, sat tracking,
grayline, .etc.

I'd not count Elecraft totally out on the keyboard performance feature. Not
many of us can type that fast, but, it's probably something to look at. My
concern would be marginally affecting something that's more important like
DSP processing. Perhaps a re-design of the I/O board with it's own
microcontroller. Add separate RS232 and USB Host ports, the I/O MCU could
buffer the I/O .etc.. anyway.conjecture is fun but without any facts it's
hard to imagine a probable fix.

As a note: I'm signed up for CW Academy but the class doesn't start until
Jan/Feb. In the mean time I'm spending my time listening around 7.053ish in
the AM. There seems to be a lot of rag chewing so it's good copy practice
(generally fast too). I'm using LCWO.net as well to hammer in the sounds.
About 2 or 3 times a week I break out the CW Academy papers and try sending
with my Bencher/Vibroplex paddle. Practice, practice, practice. I aspire to
be QRO like you ;)

remorse on a K3/K3S purchase?

Message-ID: aa39b62a-226d-42f2-b377-e06aa4cd6...@gmail.com

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Maybe I can offer a counterpoint, I do regret my K3 purchase. But I will
not be selling it.

That was the summary. Here, at great length, is the detail:

I had a KX3 with KXPA100 and liked it very much. I'm a CW operator and hope
to join the QRQ gang some day soon. But I spent the past 40 years working
with computers and I don't want one in my shack. I prefer to have minimal
equipment at the operating desk. With that in mind, I saw the pictures of
the PX3 with the word Keyboard stenciled over a USB socket. I ordered the
PX3 and separately order a folding wireless keyboard to match.

The PX3 arrived and it changed my operating for the better. Seeing the
entire band instead of slowly tuning for CW signals adds a whole new
dimension to my hobby.

But the Keyboard USB socket was useless and the sort-of-promise that the
keyboard option would be ready by Christmas went sort-of-unfulfilled.

Meanwhile, the K3/P3/SVGA combo has a keyboard option and my CW speed is
increasing so I ordered the K3 combo. It cost a lot more than the KX3 had.
As soon as the gear arrived I set it up with my yet-unused wireless keyboard
and commenced to play with it. Trouble. Letters, and sometimes whole words
went missing. CTRL-S has to be hit every so often to force a buffer dump.
And sporadically there are pauses of several seconds when sending just stops
and CTRL-S fails. However, the buffer dump might resume on its own.

My phone call to Elecraft gave me bad news. My wireless keyboard was not
approved by Elecraft so there would be no support for it. I ordered a USB
keyboard, waited for its arrival, and discovered no difference. I still had
all the same problems with the wired, approved keyboard. Then more bad news
from Elecraft: operating the keyboard without a VGA monitor is not approved.
If you recall, I wanted minimal equipment in the shack; in fact that's why I
wanted the keyboard option instead of the KX3 (now K3) Utility program for
sending CW. Now I learned that I have to have a screen on the desk as well.

I purchased a VGA monitor and tried again.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard QRO

2015-08-04 Thread Jerry Moore
I just had a thought. A Raspberry Pi could be used to interface the QRO
keyboard to the K3/K3S through whatever interface supports the high speed
keying. Of course we’d need an OS and program on the Raspberry PI but I’d
expect that already exists. We might have to homebrew a switch interface. The
new Raspberry PI units are around $45 or so. The older Raspberry PI units would
work fine for this running SE-Linux. Just thinking out loud. Yes it’s another
box, but, at the end of the day you can just plug it in and run. The Raspberry
Pi in a case is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. There may be
better/cheaper solutions as well. Just thinking outside the box for a quick fix.

keyboard but it doesn't seem to work. I seem to be pairing the USB receiver
with the keyboard but typing an * isn't recognized by the P3 SVGA.

The question, of course, is what keyboards, preferably wireless, have been
found to be compatible with a P3/SVGA? Are there any that are full-travel,
rather than Chicklet style?

Thanks very much.

Have you tried using the K3 Utility (or KComm)? If you can send CW with
either of those it will show that the problem must be an HRD issue and not a
fault with the settings of the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard CW with HRD and DM780

2011-02-02 Thread vk4cmv

I have CW (KY Cmd) working with DM780 here - so here's a quick run down of
how I have it set up.

On the K3 side, CW Mode selected (CW REV actually - so that the DM780
waterfall tunes the right way), I have have QSK set, but it will work OK
with Semi.

On the DM780 side, mode is set to CW (KY Cmd) and, quite importantly, the
Break In toggle is set ON - so when you type, the commands are sent to the
K3 straight-away. Just hit the E key when you are inside the text input
window in DM780 and you should get a 'dit' out of the K3.

With the KY Cmd mode it's important to remember that you will be
transmitting at the pitch you have set up in the K3 - so if you want to net
onto another CW signal, say 650Hz, set up the C marker in DM780 on 650Hz and
you will be right.

There are other CW variants in DM780:

If you use the MCW mode, this is done using audio tones, like PSK and RTTY
and I suspect you would need to be in DATA mode to send CW - advise not
going there.

CW - where you can configure a serial/parallel port to key you rig.

CW (Winkey) - which also requires that you configure a port to talk to the
K1EL Winkey box.

I've tried all of these at one time or another and have decided that CW (KY
Cmd) is the answer for me (less clutter on the shack desk).

Send me an email off the forum if you're still having problems.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard CW with HRD and DM780

2011-02-02 Thread Jim Sheldon
Wondering if the original poster is using HRD Version 4.0 or the Beta 5.0
version. I have never been able to get the Production Release 4.0 build
to work on CW using the KY option with my K3. I just downloaded and installed
the Beta version 5.0 and it works exactly as Julian says.

I don't know why V4.0 won't work and haven't bothered to troubleshoot it very
hard as I operate CW old school with the paddles and receive by ear so I
don't need or use the decoders either in the programs or the K3 itself.

I do like the option of being able to use the computer's keyboard for sending
CW as I can certainly KB send CW faster and more cleanly than I can with the
paddles, especially above 25 wpm. For CW, Elecraft's K3 Utility program
terminal works just fine, but for PSK and RTTY, it's better just for testing
the mode and if you can't type fast enough to keep ahead of the buffer, it
comes out of transmit. This sort of negates it for the slow typers using it
for QSO's, but at least it will run the K3 in native DATA mode

As a do doggone near everything type program, Simon's Ham Radio Deluxe is
rapidly becoming one of the best available, especially in the free software
category. It supports so many different rigs in the CAT control category
that I'm sure there will always be some bugs in it, but so far the Beta 5.0 and
the K3 seem to play well together.

I've had my K3 since the day before Christmas and am learning something new
about it every day so it will probably take me a lot longer than that to get
HRD and Digital Master figured out (if I ever do).

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard CW with HRD and DM780

2011-02-02 Thread Sam Morgan
I finally gave up on HRD 5.0 I was never able to keep it connected to VE7CC's
cluster, It would drop me and then I would have to reconnect and loose all my
settings. HRD doesn't have any options for what you tell the cluster you connect
to, so you must redo it all by hand commands. Other than the cluster problem,
HRD 5.0 was nice as far as the K3's interface.

I have switched to DXLabs, works like it should with the cluster. and it even
allows me to see spots in bands I was not previously watching. It does so much,
just like HRD, that it has a rather steep learning curve, for me, but I'm
getting there. But I'm now using LP Bridge, so I can use PowerSDR-if as well as
DXLabs and many other pgms at one time, best of both worlds, I hardly miss the
prettyness of the HRD K3 interface. I just click on a spot or a place in the
waterfall and bang, the K3 follows obediently changing modes, splits, etc.

Oh and DXLabs also Free, unlike TRX-Manager which I also tried for the demo
period. Had a better K3 interface than DXLabs, but hey maybe thats why they put
buttons and knobs on the face of the K3, hi hi.

No. It was speculation folllowing a suggestion from Wayne very early on that
this *might* be an application of the engineering test connector below the
front panel. It has never been confirmed as a feature so I think we must
assume it will never happen until given firm evidence that they are
considering it.

I never implied that this particular keyboard had anything to do with
one's operating system preferences. If you read PFU's website, you'll
read that these keyboards were designed with UNIX users in mind. And if
you read Wikipedia article on Caps Lock (or just do a Google search) you
might read that the Caps Lock really is depreciated no matter what OS
you use.

On every keyboard I own (both PC and Linux computers), the CAPS LOCK key
has been removed so I don't keep hitting it by accident.

I look to see if the idiot caps lock light is on//it's much easier than screwing
around with the keyboardand doesn't lull me into a false sense of security
since I visit many different sites(keyboards) every week.

A useful tip is to pack underneath the edges of the CAPS LOCK keycap
with one or two layers of sticky foam fixer pads. Use enough stiff foam
to prevent the key from operating unless you really do mean it.

An unexpected benefit was that the 'solid' feel of the modified CAPS
LOCK key has trained me to avoid that key on unmodified keyboards too.

[Elecraft] Keyboard Connector

2007-07-16 Thread Michael Koetje
Has there been anything announced in reference to the keyboard or connector
that will be used for the digital modes? I am wondering if there has been a
decision made as to what type or make of keyboard will be necessary to
utilize these functions. Will this be an accessory offered by Elecraft?

Re: [Elecraft] Keyboard question

2007-05-16 Thread Robert Tellefsen
Hi Ken
I have one that might be what you are looking for.
I use it with TR LOG here.
The mfr is BTC, and I think the model is 5100-C.
It has no numeric key pad. It has 10 F keys.
Width is 11.75 inches by 6 inches deep.
Really fits well on my small operating desk.
It has foldup legs at the rear to raise the back
a bit for a more comfortable typing angle.
It was quite inexpensive, as I recall. Maybe
something around $20 at my local computer
store.
Good luck and 73

Subject: [Elecraft] Keyboard question

Can someone aim me at a small keyboard? I realize that small
is relative, so let's say something that's appropiate for my K3.
Something on the order of a small laptop keyboard in a housing.

I've walked the isles of a few computer departments scanning the
shelves, asked sales folks and haven't found anything.

2007-05-16 Thread Mark J. Schreiner
Maybe a bit larger than you are looking for, but we had some at work
that were tossed aside when they were delivered with new Agilent Digital
Communications Analyzers. I thought they were a very nice size, just
enough keys, not too many, etc. Must have really been a standard size
Agilent had procured elsewhere, obviously.

I like the Happy Hacker keyboards but it may be a bit pricey for this.

cybergys.com sells a generic black mini ps/2 keyboard for $25 or
so. Also good.
