Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 Band Decoder question

2023-03-08 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP

I have one which I've successfully used with my K3.
I did find that in a QRO environment, you should be careful with RF
coming in on the outputs. I had to hang some ferrites on them to prevent
erratic operation.

Not that I know of, Darrell, although there are a bunch of options
covered in the manual. Should be on the website. W6GJB and I have been
using a pair of KRC2s that N6RNO built to switch filter sets in his
two-op contesting trailer. I'm usrf the single-coax feed from the AUX
connector to the KRC2. Simplifies things a lot.

The KRC2 is a rather early product, and shielding is non-existent,
thanks to paint everywhere between stuff that should be bonding (like
the connectors, and joints between parts of the chassis. A metal chassis
provides no shielding if cable shields are not bonded to the chassis at
the point of entry, and if shielding is not continuous. I took them
apart and used a LOT of sandpaper. :)

There are a number of ways to set up a KRC2, depending on how you want
to interface it. With an Elecraft radio, you probably want to use the
AUX bus.

On the K2, for which the KRC2 was originally designed, the AUX signal is
on the DE9 serial connector (and it's one of the reasons you cannot use
a "straight cable" connecting a K2 to a serial device!!!).

On the K3, the AUX signal is on the DE-15 ACC connector, NOT on the
9-pin serial port. The KRC2 documentation got updated for this, be sure
you have the errate document describing connection to the K3:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/KRC2/Manuals%20Downloads/KRC2_Manual_Errata_Rev_C4.pdf
So make sure you get the errata document.

Hi all,
I picked up a KRC2 Band Decoder.
Are there any issues using this with a K3?
Does the stock DB9 cable to the rig need to be rewired for the K3?
I want to hook it up for FD with a bandpass filter set.
If anyone is using it with a K3 please email offlist.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 question

2022-01-17 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
There is no “power off” indication sent to the Auxbus from the K3 or K4, so no,
there isn’t a direct way for the KRC2 to know if the radio is off.
Having said that, my KRC2 is powered through a relay that is controlled by the
K3’s +12V out jack. It is powered on with the K3 and likewise
powered off when the K3 is shut down. That causes the drivers to be shut down
and all antennas disconnected.

When I shut off the radio (K4 or K3) the KRC2 stays selecting the

Is there any way to have the KRC2 remove any antenna selection when the

Another point of consideration is that the KRC2 is programmable, but
the programming code is old and doesn't run on today's platforms.

"KRC2 Firmware Loader Supported Platforms Available for Windows 98,

I understand if Elecraft doesn't want to maintain these and wants to
focus on newer products, but publishing the interface would allow
someone else to step up and create a new tool. And today's new product
will be obsolete in the future, and having interfaces published

Maybe I can resurrect it to make it useful for something.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Paul Fletcher via Elecraft
The circuit diagram and the parts placement in the manual are correct. On mine
it was the silkscreen for R12 and R13 that was reversed. Let Jack do some
digging as it’s possible (from his comments) that this doesn’t affect all
boards. Mine only arrived a few days ago. The easy way to check if there is an
issue is to check there is the correct negative voltage on pin 8 of U2. Mine
was almost 0V before swapping the resistors.

I have a Rev C PCB and the silkscreen does not match the diagram in the Rev C
manual. On the PCB R12 and R13 are marked the opposite way round to the manual.
I can send pics if you want them.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I have two KRC2's, one uses the aux-bus line with a K3 and the other
uses the RS232 with a Kenwood TS590sg. The only problems I have had are
all self induced with programing errors!
They both work flawlessly and have for years, one drives a WX0b Six Pak,
the other drives a MFJ RCS-20Lx switch.

not corrected

Based on your info R12 should be 47ohm, correct?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
After seeing this report I pulled the Rev C PCB (the only PCB we have shipped
for this product) and took a good look at it, then looked at the docs and
finally the Gerbers for the board.
R12 and R13 on the KRC2 PCB are properly labelled. R12, closest to the
switches, is a 4.7K ohm resistor (yellow-violet-red) used to pull the RS232
line to -12V.
R13 is next to it, closest to the DE9 connectors is a 47 ohm resistor
(yellow-violet-black) and provides +12V power for the JFET.
The legends on the PCB and in Figure 10 of the KRC2 Rev C manual are correct.

Now, what caused you to think they were backwards? And, let’s make sure that
you do have a Rev C board in your KRC2.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Paul GACEK via Elecraft
Hi Paul

Thanks for the heads up.

I had some communication issues with my KRC2 in that it worked like a champ
with my K2 but not so with my KX3.

I’m going to crack open my krc2 shortly and see what values I have in those two
resistor locations.

What radio where you using with the KRC2?

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 Manual Errata??

2020-05-21 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Rich;

The KRC2 manual is correct. It is a matter of understanding the frame of
reference for the markings. The KRC2 was originally designed as a peripheral
for the K2, so the interface ports use the K2 I/O port details. On the KRC2
schematic, 8R, VRDET, 12CTRL, ALC and AUXBUS are all K2 signals that the KRC2
can use for various functions. When used with other transceivers, they are
repurposed (the benefits of using a microprocessor) to make best use of that
device.

The KRC2’s Icom band voltage sensing makes use of a feature of the processor,
that is a voltage reference pin that exists only on the AN3 port, which is
connected to pin 4 of the DE9 connectors. This particular setup was added late
in KRC2 development to resolve issues with Icom’s band voltage system. It
requires that the actual band voltage be connected to ANA1 of the micro, which
is pin 9 (marked 8R) on the DE9 connector. Again, the 8R and ALC schematic
markings have nothing to do with Icom signals, but reflect signals on the K2 IO
port.

I will communicate with you directly to try to resolve your issues shortly. We
sometimes make mistakes, and this question caused me to recheck the schematics
and code, but rest assured that in this case the manual and schematic are
correct.

[Elecraft] KRC2 Manual Errata??

2020-05-20 Thread Rich
I had been in conversation with Elecraft Tech Support, but I have not
heard back from them in three weeks.   So I will throw this out to the
group.

It appears that there is an error in the KRC2 manual and it is not shown
in the Errata sheet.

On page 24 the manual states the following when connecting the KRC2 to
an Icom radio:

"For this reason it is recommended that the reference input setup be
used. In this configuration, the band data is connected to pin 9 and the
8 volt reference is connected to pin 4. This mode is set with jumpers
W1, W2 and W3 installed."

Directly below that statement this statement appears which confirms the
first statement:

"• Analog band input on J1/2 pin 9 with reference voltage on J1/2 pin 4:"

If you look at the schematic it shows Pin 9 as Reference voltage (8v)
and Pin 4 ALC (band voltage)

So they are reversed.

Since the wording and the schematic disagree.

Does anybody have any idea which is correct?

My unit is not working properly.  I sent it in for repair but 1 hour of
labor is about the cost of the unit.  So they returned it and I am
trying to troubleshoot it myself

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 setup for Icom

2020-04-21 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Let me explain a bit more. The KRC2 followed the same thinking as the K2 - we
put non-RS232 signals on the DE9 pins. That means that only pins 2 and 3 should
see those signals, but not the others. I remember there being a warning in the
manual about this, but I don’t find it at this point. We will have to do
something about that. We have kicked ourselves many times for using this
connector arrangement. As they say, that is water under the bridge.

Unfortunately jumpers W11, W12, W19 and W20 do connect DE9 pins 4 and 9 to the
micro, through 10K dividers, meaning that if RS-232 signals are connected, they
will only be at half voltage. Thus the microcontroller is at risk.
But, lets see if it is actually damaged by setting things up properly.

The description on page 24 of the KRC2 manual sets up both connectors for use
with Icom band voltages. I would suggest using only one of the DE9s for the
Icom signals, and leaving the other set up for computer use. Using the XCVR
port for the Icom data, remove W11 and W12 and leave W19 and W20 jumpered. You
will then want to have jumpers W9 and W10 inserted to allow the computer to
talk to the KRC2 using the PC port. Make absolutely sure you only use a three
pin cable for this one (this is more of a warning to others following this
thread).

If you used the opposite connector for the Icom voltage, the jumper settings
become:
Icom voltages connected to PC port: Remove WW9, W10, W19, W20, Insert W11, W12
(for Icom data) and W21 and W23 for computer data on the XCVR port.

There have not been any updates to the KRC2 firmware since V1.6, so you have
the latest. If you would like to use the KRC2 Utility to change the band maps,
you will most likely want to have jumpers W7 and W8 removed to use 4800 bps
communications. I don’t remember if the utility allows any other data rate, but
that is currently the best one to use to communicate with the KRC2 with the
utility.

You should have the connections correct, with Icom Band Voltage on pin 9 and
Reference voltage on pin 4.

Let me know how this works for you.

It is _very_ important not to use a straight-through cable with the KRC2. As
documented in the KRC2 manual, the pins are connected to the microcontroller,
and the +/- 12 V excursions of the RS-232 levels will damage the
microcontroller I/O pins.

There are two voltages you need from the Icom, the band Voltage, and the
reference voltage. The band voltage output from some Icom radios have been
shown to drift during transmit, so much that they may show a completely
different band. For this reason the band reference voltage (+8V) needs to be
used. It is this voltage that drifts, and thus the Band voltage follows.

With that in mind, the W9 - W22 jumper settings are important and will
connect/disconnec the various pins to the DE9 connectors from the
microcontroller.

With that in mind, the W9 - W22 jumper settings are important and will
connect/disconnec the various pins to the DE9 connectors from the
microcontroller.

[Elecraft] KRC2 setup for Icom

2020-04-21 Thread Rich
Does anyone have any experience using the KRC2 with an Icom radio?  This
is a working KRC2 that was on a K3 at one time.

To start I cannot get the KRC2 to connect to my PC.  I have used
straight through cable, Null modem Cable and a USB to Serial Cable.  I
have run the program on an old XP laptop and my Win10 machine.   I have
even used a "real" comport.  None of those configurations will connect
to the device.   The DL switch is set properly.

The KRC2 passes all of the manual button press tests.

I have the jumpers set for ICOM on KRC2 board.  The ICOM is sending the
band voltage to the unit as measured with a Volt meter.

Do you really need the computer to make it work?  I am thinking that is
mainly for firmware and antenna relay settings

I am just trying to control a 419B bandpass filter.

Any thoughts?

Rich

Re: [Elecraft] krc2 jumpers setting ..help

2018-03-27 Thread Robert Bajuk
Hi Noel,

I can share my settings which work just fine with TS480 (it should work
also with TS590 models)... N1MM talks just fine with the radio with KRC in
the middle

You need some small modification inside KRC2 Here are the settings for
19200 baud-rate

Jumpers IN: 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 21, 22, 23
Jumpers 14 & 17 bridged with voltage from pin 7 of U2 fed to this jumper
(~2" piece of wire).

Hope it will solve your problem, try it and report back

[Elecraft] KRC2 does not communicate with CPU

2017-10-14 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I have 2 KRC2's, one is working correctly with my K3. The second one
used to work, but now just blinks the LED slowly, about 1 sec. rate,
when powered up.  If I switch the OP/DL switch to DL the LED turns off.
I have no comms over the serial port with my computer.  I'm using the
same setup as the one that works.

I tried to D/L new firmware, but it never finishes and the symptoms
never change.   Is the PIC16F877 fried, or the serial interface chip
(MAX1406)?

Any suggestions on what to try?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] KRC2 For Sale

2016-05-30 Thread Dick via Elecraft
I have a KRC2 band decoder and control kit for sale; asking $80 plus shipping
(USA).
Am selling the KRC2 because I have 12 mono band antennas (6M - 160M plus 75M
NVIS) and the KRC2 will only control 10 (10M - 160M).  Doing a bit of research
(actually blind luck when perusing the Array Solutions web site) I found their
Bandmaster III will control 12 antennas, and I picked one up at the Array
Solutions booth in Dayton last week.
Though the KRC2 will work with several other manufacture's radios, I have only
used it with a K3 (and now a K3S).  I have never had any problems or issues
with it; I am the original owner, and it has always been in a smoke free
environment.
For the K3/K3S (and I think all the Elecraft radios), control is best asserted
by using the AuxBus; this requires one wire from the KRC2 connected to pin 2 on
the AuxIO connector on the K3/K3S.
If interested, please fire off an email to me at either richarddw1...@yahoo.com
or k8...@yahoo.com;  or feel free to call me on the land line (am an ARRL DXCC
card checker, and my phone number can be found on the ARRL webpage).

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 and KX3

2016-05-02 Thread Marcus Busch [DL1EKC]
Hi folks,

I'm trying to interconnect my KX3 and KRC2. I read the posts on this topic
dating
back to early March. The KRC2 is a very versatile unit allowing parallel
operation of
band filters via the BCD outputs and antenna relays the same time. So I would
really
like to get the KRC2 running with my KX3.

I have the basic KX3 interoperating with the KRC2, but I had to bridge D9 on
the
KRC2. Without this bridge serial comms via the KRC2 doesn't work here. Also the
KRC2
utility does not find my KRC2 with 19200 bd but with slower speeds.

I have jumpers W9, W10, W22, W23, W3 and W8 in, all others out.

These are my configurations:

1) KX3 with KRC2

KRC2 and KX3 set to 19200 bd -> works

2) KX3 + PX3 with KRC2

KRC2 is set to 19200 bd, PX3 to 19200 bd and KX3 to 38400 bd -> works

Comment: It seems the PX3 is relaying the rs232 comms to the KX3 with 38400 bd,
which
is indepentend from the PX3<->PC line speed. However, with the PX3 switched off
but
still connected in-line the KX3 RS232 speed has to be set to 19200 bd (passive
pass-through). It took me quite some time to figure this out :-) .

3) KX3 + PX3 + KXPA100 with KRC2

KRC2 is set to 19200 bd, PX3 to 19200 bd and KX3 to 38400 bd. The RS232
connection
chain is PC - KRC2 - KXPA100 - PX3 - KX3.

KRC2 operation works, but I cannot operate the KXPA100. Upon setting pa mode to
on
the KXPA100 switches on. But after a few seconds the KX3 menu entry switches
back to
off, after a few more seconds the KXPA100 switches off.

Note 1: When I disconnect the KRC2 from KXPA100 AND set the line speed in PX3
to
38400 bd, KXPA100 operation works.

Note 2: If I leave the PX3 line rate at 19200 bd, serial comms from PC to KX3
is
disrupted as long as the KXPA100 is on.

I know all this is a bit confusing and I have no clue how to solve this. Anyone
here
can give an advice?

Thanks for Your time.

[Elecraft] KRC2 and KX3

2016-03-08 Thread Vic DiCiccio
When Eric VA7DZ, Fred KE7X and I were all experimenting with KRC2s for
our K3s, I also connected mine to the KX3 with the help of Jack Brindle,
KRC2 expert.

Here's what I did to the KRC2 to make it work in between the KX3 and the
computer:

1. Set KX3 menu item RS232 to 19200b. Set the appropriate software on
the computer to 19,200 baud.

2. Use only the following jumpers in the KRC2: W3, W8, W9, W10, W21,
W22, W23.

3. Make a special jumper wire to go from the RS-232 connector side of
W11, to the RS-232 connector side of W20. This carries the DTR signal
between the two RS-232 connectors without actually bringing it into the
KRC2 circuit. It's voltage is incompatible with the KRC2, but it needs
to be "carried through" if you intend to break out the DTR signal to,
say, key the KRC2 with a transistor (or perhaps use DTR for PTT, or you
could figure out the RTS pin on the RS-232 if you prefer).

The circuit diagram in the KRC2 assembly and operating instructions
booklet is very useful to help to understand the jumpers. Normally, for
a K3, you'd use W16 to enable the Auxbus in the KRC2. W3 tells it to
use the serial port, not the Auxbus. W8 sets it to 19,200 baud. W9 and
W10 carry the pin 2 and pin 3 data for RS-232.

As Jack said, it's important to only connect pins 2, 3, (both data) and
5 (ground) to the KRC2 circuit because the other pins of RS-232 are
electrically incompatible with the KRC2.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 and KX3

2016-03-06 Thread Jack Brindle
This is not a good idea - the two are not compatible. The KX3 does not speak
the auxbus protocol the KRC2 needs, plus the voltage levels are not compatible.
The best way to use the KRC2 with the KX3 is to use serial port communications.
Realize the KRC2’s highest data rate is 19200 bps. Also remember that the KRC2
does not implement the full EI-232 interface, so be sure to fabricate a cable
that only connects pins 2, 3 and 5 to the radio (or computer).

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 and KX3

2016-03-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Robert,

The KX3 ACC2 I/O menu parameter should be set to TRN CTRL.

The output of the KX3 ACC2 IO is 3 volt logic while to KRC2 uses 5 volt
logic. It may be that the AUXBUS signal from the KX3 is not properly
switching the input of the KRC2. You may have to add a 3V to 5V
translation circuit.

Note that I have not tried the KRC2 with the KX3.

Pin 9? The KRC2 Auxbus connection is on pin 6. Use pin 5 for the ground
connection. If you used pin 1 for ground that should work also.

The 100 watt amplifier should have no affect on KRC2 operation, recheck your
internal cabling to make sure everything is OK, and recheck the Aux IO cabling.
It should be:
K3 Aux IO: Pin 2 — KRC2 pin 6
K3 Aux IO: Pin 5 or 12 — KRC2 pin 5

Make sure the W jumpers are set properly. If you are connecting the K3 to the
KRC2’s XCVR port, be sure that W16 is installed. In general you can remove Ws
17-23.
That is all that is needed.

Power cycling the KRC2 should have no effect on the K3. If you have changed
W1-8, power cycling will have affect on the KRC2, however.

Give me details of your setup and I’ll work with you to get things going.

[Elecraft] KRC2 not working after PA upgrade

2016-01-25 Thread Dave Glenn
I recently had the 100 Watt amp added to my K3.

I went to set it up with and use with my transverters and KRC2 menu item
shows -

Cabling looks good going from 15 pin on the K3 to the 9 on the KRC2.

If I power cycle the KRC2 while the K3 is on it shows Turn On PA and is
locked up.

Is there some setting I have forgotten?

Tnx, Dave N6TEB

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 not working after PA upgrade

2016-01-25 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

AFAIK, the addition of the KPA3 should not have any effect on the
operation of the KRC2.

Check the jumpers in the KRC2 against the AUXBUS configuration for the
K3 on page 23 of the KRC2 manual.
The two indications of K3 menu for the KRC2 show "-" and the "Turn On
PA" message are making me think that there is some kind of conflict on
the AUXBUS signal internal to the K3 or KRC2.

[Elecraft] KRC2 for the K3

2016-01-09 Thread AD6XY
Hi All

Is there any prospect of the KRC2 being updated to fully support the K3?
Ideally a new device with outputs covering all the HF bands, including the
new ones and the 6 transverter bands? I need this for a remote setup.

My old KRC2 has finally failed and no longer responds, but it never really
interfaced well with the K3 as it only supported K2 capabilities.

If your KRC2 failed, try to reload the firmware. Sometime, mine fails and
this is only the firmware to reload. I use with a K3 with no specific

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-26 Thread Gordon LaPoint

Jack, (and others on the list)
Thanks for the pointers. I was unable to get the rs-232 to the
computer working. I have not tried the Aux-bus to the K3 yet. I think
I will contact elecraft service and see if I can send it back for a
look-see by them. I can not tell what it has for firmware or set the
bandmap without the rs232.
I had only the jumpers in for the RS-232 connection, and the serial
cable is only wired up for rx, tx and gnd (pins 2,3 and 5). I tried all
the baud rates, I did verify that the serial port and cable worked with
my KPA-500 and W2 meter.

When you get ready to test, send me an email. I will be around this weekend,

One thing that is very critical. Using a straight-through RS-232 cable will put
high voltage (12V) signals on the microcontroller and can
damage it. I hope that isn’t the situation you are seeing.

The microcontroller reads the W1-8 jumpers only at power-up, so after you
change the jumpers you must power cycle the KRC2.
You can reset the bandpass to factory default by holding the F4 button at power
up. This requires the V1.6 firmware, which has
been out for several years. There should be a sticker on the MCU that indicates
the firmware it held when it left the factory, but
that becomes invalid after the firmware is upgraded. At that point, the only
real way to tell the difference is to query the MCU
with the KRC2 Utility. When you try that utility, the DL/OP switch inside the
KRC2 needs to be on the DL position. It should be
in the OP position for normal use if you are using RS232 to communicate with
the radio.

Let me know when you get testing and I’ll help as much as I can. We really do
want to get you going with your KRC2 as quickly as possible.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-25 Thread John K9UWA
THANKS JIM

After 4+ years of dealing with the inability to reprogram the KRC2. Finally the
real Answer as to how to connect the KRC2 to the Serial DB9 of your
computer and program it with the Utility Program. Yes 4 years ago when I
assembled the KRC2 after three very long frustrating days I managed to get
the band map program to work and the box is programmed up for 9 HF
bands. And I like many others now wish to reprogram it for SIX meter
antenna.

A simple statement in the KRC2 manual could have been added by Elecraft
stating. To Program your KRC2 to your K3 radio get a standard DB9 serial
cable. and CUT OFF all wires EXCEPT 2, 3 and 5. Mark the cable Program
KCR2 ONLY and save the cable for future use. I wonder how many
additional KRC2 boxes Elecraft could have sold over the last 4 years?

Again thanks Jim for the simple solution.

That may not be necessary. I'm working from memory which is a horrible thing

I determined what was actually needed in my case and removed all unnecessary
jumpers. Bingo! All issues went away... I did not try to determine what
connections were the problem

I had a PC connected thru a USB to RS232 convertor and the K3 Aux buss on the

what we want.

[Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-21 Thread Wes (N7WS)
Amen. Mine sits on the shelf. I was going to remotely switch some antennas
using it. Instead, I have a KAT500 and three runs of Heliax.

Although it has an RS-232 port Elecraft recommends the Aux bus. Just what I need
another Y-connector.

Eric many of us K3 users are using the KRC2 for band decoder to antenna

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Gordon,

Have you checked the internal jumpers to be sure it is properly plugged
for use with the K3.
Download the newest KRC2 manual if the one you have does not include use
with the K3 - see page 23.

You have the choice of using the AUXBUS (if you only want the band data).
If you are using the serial port, the baud rate on the K3 and the PC
application must be limited to 19,200 or below.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-21 Thread Bill Frantz
After reading about the problems people are having getting their
PCs to talk to the KRC2, I think I'm glad I rolled my own with
an Arduino and the band lines from the K3. I learned a lot about
hardware, and had a fun construction project. Now antenna switch
controller sits next to the K3 and automatically selects an
antenna for each band. Too bad the encoding for the 60M band
aliases the transverter bands. I may have to teach the Arduino
async ASCII should the aliasing become a problem, or if I
develop a need to know where in a band the K3 is tuned.

I got mine to work several years ago on Win 7. As I recall, I had to update

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-21 Thread Michael Eberle
A lot of people seem to be having issues with it. I remember mine being
a pain to get set up (mostly operator error) but it works fine now. I
use it to switch amp keying from the KPA500 to the 2M amp when the 2M
band is selected on the K3. When 2M is selected, the KRC2 energizes a
relay that switches the key out of the K3 to the 2M amp. You do have to
change the switch on the side from OP to DL before it will communicate
with the computer. Also I believe you have to set the baud rate on the
KRC2 with jumpers.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 relay control

2015-07-05 Thread Jack Brindle
Byron is on the right track here. The best way to control the KRC2’s ACx pins
is to do it through the K3’s menu. The KRC2 is listening to the K3 to get band
and status information, and not necessarily to a computer. So setting the state
in the K3 will cause it to be changed in the KRC2.

Take a good look at the K3’s MN command, specifically MN049. I suspect that
testing with the K3 Utility’s command pane will quickly show you the correct
command to do what you want. From there is is a pretty simple matter to plug
the command into N1MM+.

By the way, the K3S/K3//KX3 Programmer’s Reference has been seeing a lot of
update activity recently. If you haven’t downloaded the latest, you may be
missing out on some interesting stuff.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 relay control

2015-07-05 Thread Jack Brindle
A bit more on this. Sending MN049; to the K3 puts the K3 into the Menu mode
with the KRC2 item selected. The VFOA display will show the status of the KRC2
ACC pins, read directly from the KRC2. You can then issue UP; or DN; commands
to change the KRC2 ACx pin setting. It will advance (or decrement) by one for
each UP (or DN) issued, rolling over when it gets to the end of the sequence.
You can read the LCD with the DS; command to tell what the AC state is. Issuing
MN255; will get you back to normal operations.

Be sure to refer to the K3S/K3/KX3 Programmer’s Reference to get the details as
to how to issues these commands, they can be a bit convoluted, especially when
playing in the menus.

If you are adding the commands to N1MM, you probably want to use 2, the first
to turn on ACC1: MN049;UP;MN255;
the second to turn it off: MN049:DN;MN255;

This can be a lot more involved if you use the AC2 or AC3 pins as well, and
using the KRC2 with AC binary coding (jumper W4 installed) makes things far
more complex.

Note that external control of the ACx pins requires use of the AUX I/O
connection to the K3/K3S. The KRC2 does not have any commands to change the ACx
pins using the serial port, nor does the transceiver have the ability to make
that request using the serial port instead of Aux I/O.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2

2015-06-11 Thread Jack Brindle
Mike, just how are you wanting to control the switch? If it is band-based, then
just wire up the RCS-10 to the appropriate terminals in the KRC2, connect the
KRC2 to the K3, and thing should start working. Are your needs more than this?

The best way to use the KRC2 with the K3 is using the Auxbus connection. Just
two wires, Auxbus and ground, from the KRC2 to the K3. The KRC2 needs power, of
course, and then the connections to the relay box.

Now, as for the ACC connectors, the K3 has entries in the KRC2 menu for
Accessory switching. They directly control the ACC pins based on your menu
selection.what can this be used for? Perhaps alternate antennas for a band, or
other things.

It really is pretty simple. The large majority of users don’t even need to use
the KRC2 utility to remap the output pins. Just hook things up and operate.

Thanks, Jack, sounds doable. Still dunno about this part the K3 has entries in
the KRC2 menu for Accessory switching.

Mike, just how are you wanting to control the switch? If it is band-based,
then just wire up the RCS-10 to the appropriate terminals in the KRC2,
connect the KRC2 to the K3, and thing should start working. Are your needs
 more than this?

The best way to use the KRC2 with the K3 is using the Auxbus connection. Just
two wires, Auxbus and ground, from the KRC2 to the K3. The KRC2 needs power,
of course, and then the connections to the relay box.

Now, as for the ACC connectors, the K3 has entries in the KRC2 menu for
Accessory switching. They directly control the ACC pins based on your menu
selection.what can this be used for? Perhaps alternate antennas for a band,
 or other things.

It really is pretty simple. The large majority of users don’t even need to
use the KRC2 utility to remap the output pins. Just hook things up and
 operate.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2

2015-06-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike,

Refer to the K3 manual page 57 - menu entry for KRC2, and also the KRC2
manual.
There is a bit of possible confusion between the two designations
ACC. A standard KRC2 has 3 ACC outputs as well as the band outputs.
The KRC2ACC is a slightly different version of the KRC2 which has
features intended to assist unsighted amateurs - and the buttons in that
version serve a different purpose than for the standard version.
If you happen to have the KRC2ACC hardware, you can negate the changes
for the announciator functions by loading the non-ACC version of the
KRC2 firmware and it will function as the standard one.

[Elecraft] krc2 flashing LED

2014-12-29 Thread Joe Hetrick
Something happened to my KRC2 between yesterday and today.

Power-up this morning, LED flashes. I tried to fire it up ith the 2.1.7 Config
Util; whatever state the LED is in, on or off, persists if I check for the KRC2
( but one is never found )-- eg if the LED happens to be blinking ON, kit stays
on as soon as the query starts; if it's off, it stays off.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] KRC2 and TS480

2014-04-08 Thread Steve Bunting
Hi everyone,

I have KRC2 band decoder that I used ages ago with my K2 - it still works
in that I can toggle bands when I hold the F1 button. I want to use it with
my remote TS-480 but the radio CAT isn't currently driving KRC2 at all and
I would like some advice on how to get it working, please.

Current set up: I have used the Kenwood jumper positions from the KRC2
manual and have a straight through serial cable from rig to KRC2. I am
using 4800 baud (W7 and W8 in place) and the radio CAT works with my PC.
The KRC2 is certainly in operate mode and I have a 13.8V PSU attached
(stating the obvious!)

Questions: I suspect I need to apply the handshake jumper between W14 and
W17 for the TS-480? Does the position of W7 and W8 matter for 4800 baud?
I'm assuming the manual is correct. Can any 480/KRC2 users comment on
anything else I have missed?

I had conversation with Gary from Elecraft some time ago and his setup

Jumper settings inside KRC2:
---
Jumpers IN: 3, 6, 9, 10, and 21-23
Jumpers 14 17 bridged with voltage from pin 7 of U2 fed to this jumper
(~2 piece of wire).

Jumpers W7 and W8 depend of data rate, see KRC2 manual page 20

Hope it helps

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 and TS480

2014-04-08 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

You will have to refer to your TS-4800 documentation to determine the
data rate (setting for W7 and W8 jumpers) and the proper setting for the
handshake jumpers W14 and W17.
I do not have a TS-4800, but the manual should tell you what is needed
and then the KRC2 manual will tell you how to plug it.

[Elecraft] FS / Trade -- Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder / Antenna Relay 8 Port Remote Coax Switch

2014-01-02 Thread Andy Vavra
I am offering for sale or trade an assembled Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder /
Antenna Relay Driver and homebrew 8-port remote coaxial switch that are
surplus to my needs.

Neither the KRC2 nor the relay box have ever been used or mounted outside in
the weather.

The KRC2 Band Decoder is a universal, programmable station control unit that
can switch any combination of antennas, filters, amplifiers, or other
equipment. It supports analog, digital, and RS232 control inputs, so it's
compatible with transceivers from Icom (voltage level), Yaesu (BCD and
voltage level), and Kenwood (serial or BCD via logging program), as well as
Elecraft's K3, K2 and K2/100 rigs.

More details on the KRC2 can be found at this link on the Elecraft website
at this link: http://www.elecraft.com/KRC2/krc2.htm

The 8-port switch is built in a gasketed waterproof box and is set-up so
that both the shield and center conductor of any given antenna are switched
at the same time with DPDT relays to fully disconnect unused antennas from
the system. Teflon connectors and heavy duty relays are used to withstand
full QRO power levels.

Actual photos of both units can be viewed here:
http://s993.photobucket.com/user/andyvavra/library/KRC2

Asking $125 (or best offer) + postage, or will trade for a KBPF3 General
Coverage RX Bandpass Module

No charge for my installing 60 capacitors , 9 diodes , 13 resistors and

Kit bought 6/2013 - built 7/2013 - works fine with K3 - has suggested
Elecraft mods ( DB9 connector tabs soldered to board and internal paint
removed around all case grounds.)

Works perfectly but I had problems trying to switch between it and RATPAK

easier to disable.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 /K3

2013-09-06 Thread AD6XY
Hello Hank

I sympathize with these difficult issues - the KRC2 is out of date and its
about time it was replaced but at least it has always been reliable. I have
one and it has never suffered from RF getting into it. Sorry if the below is
stating what is already obvious to you.

This may be a symptom of an RF in the shack problem. The 1ft line should not
be a problem and as long as it is screened additional filtering should not
help. Using RS232 may cure the symptoms but not the cause and your own BCD
interface likewise.

If it is an RF getting into the system problem, how might that be
happening? A good way to check if it really is RF in the shack is to ask
yourself if you have issues with lots of noise on the bands from the shack
computer. As antennas are reciprocal, if you have significant coupling of RF
back you will also have coupling of noise in.

Obviously with 1500W the antennas will have to be a long way away from the
operating position (for safety if nothing else) so we can probably rule out
this being due to direct radiation from the antenna. I assume you have
remote antennas and the array solution switch somewhere remote with a long
feeder back to the shack. Maybe at the base of a tower.

Could RF be getting back on the control lines from the remote switch? Are
the control lines screened? Are they running close to the feeder. Putting
ferrite on the switch control lines may help. Ditto the feeder. Burying the
feeder helps a lot but isn't always practical.

One of the worst configurations for this problem is a feeder on a catenary
because it will pick up like an antenna, especially if you have an effective
RF choke at the antenna end. If you have that arrangement, ferrites are the
answer - plus a good short connection to your RF ground where the cable
enters the house.

The other possibility is you are using several feeders via the switch with
an ATU in the shack. That's a problem because you will potentially have a
bad match on the feeder in use, almost certainly a bad match on the feeders
not in use which will result in the pickup from all the feeders merging at
the switch. So, if the remote switch is actually in the shack I would
investigate if you can improve the grounding and maybe move it somewhere
else - like right next to the ground stake.

Mike

I inherited a pair of KRC2s from N6RNO as part of the bandpass filter

It took me an hour or two on each unit to clean up the mess.

Most RF in the shack is the result of Pin One Problems. If your

One very useful piece of information is that all that is required to get
band data from a K3 to a KRC2 is a single run of coax to connect the AUX
BUS. Pin One Problems can be avoided by connecting the coax shield at
both ends to the SHELL of the DB-connectors. BUT -- in the KRC2, the
shells of the DB-connectors are insulated from the chassis, so that's
one of the messes that you must clean up.

Both the K3 and KRC2 are designed to be universal in their AUX
interfaces, so they provide BCD data on other pins in the DB15 for use
with other radios and other interface equipment.

Another idea Hank -- if you're using an RS232 interface, see my notes
about using CAT5 cable to build your own RS232 cable. Twisted pair
provides strong rejection of hum, buzz, and RFI. Use one pair for each
signalling circuit, with the solid color going to the high side pins (2,
3, 4, 7) and the striped conductors twisted together and connected to
the DB9 shell.

[Elecraft] KRC2 /K3

2013-09-05 Thread Pfizenmayer
I have a KRC2 that is presently using the AUX Bus input to drive an Array
Solutions remote antenna switch . At 100 watts , it is usable but at 1500
watts is unusable. This evening I even unplugged the 12vdc supply and it still
drove the K3 nuts - froze it once and several times it would show KPA500 (dunno
where that comes from , I don't have one ).ONly thing that kills it is to
unhook the AUX Bus line. I am not real wild about it changing antennas randomly
-- even with two SWR triggers in use.

I won't bore you with the ferrite cores etc I have tried and or still have in
place.and other details - - my questions are

Anybody have any experience with how much RF filtering I could insert in the 1
foot K3/KRC2 aux bus cable ?

OR - is it worth changing to the RS232 bus and using the BCD data from the
K3 ? Looking at the KRC2 schematic , it looks like the microprocessor is still
in the act with the RS232 inputs going thru it . But I have filtered RS232
data lines with Ferroxcube VK400 2 1/2 turn hi mu ferrite chokes and 0.001's
at least on PTT and KEY lines with no problems.

I am tempted to sell the KRC2 and build my own BCD RS232 to serial
converter, just thought the KRC2 would be a quicker solution. Its overkill for
what I need to do.

If you are only using the High side switching from the KRC2, removing D4
will work fine for you. The low side switching will continue to function.

I would like to be able to turn off the KRC2 to allow manual switching of the
antennas - I am feeding 12vdc to the SOURCE driver terminal strip J5 in the
KRC2 and if I turn off that supply , there is a diode D4 that feeds 12 vdc
from the normal DC input jack on the KRC2 to the SOURCE driver Vbb so even if I
turn the other 12v supply off , it stays latched on the last band .

If I remove the 12 vdc feeding the microprocessor , but leave the AUX BUSS on
ACC connected , the K3 freezes and will not reboot .If I remove the conection
between the KRC2 and the ACC connector , then it will reboot and is normal.

Is this normal AUX bus behaviour ? If so looks like I will either clip D4 - or
ressurect my relay switch box to completely isolate the 7 wires from either
KRC2 or the RATPAK manual switch to the remote switch box.

Hi Hank,

The problem of the K3 locking up when power is removed from the KRC2
started around the time KPA500 support was added to the K3 firmware.
It's normal in that it's not just you, if that helps any...
