Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
I finally bought the JBL Control 2, and I want to report back to the group what I´ve found out so far. The sound is excellent. I had to find a sweet spot and fiddle with the volume control on the speaker to get rid of hiss and noise and I was able to reduce it to almost zero.I can only control the volume with the K3´s af gain, otherwise I get heavy noise from the JBL speakers.I´m also getting a bit of rf into the speakers, even barefoot, but it´s not a lot.If I can solve the problems I will keep them. 73,Chris-OE5CSP -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Loudspeakers-for-the-K3-tp7472583p7555815.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
I am using the speakers from West Mountain Radio mentioned several times in this thread and others regarding speakers. I find they have a nice cut for ham radio, at least for my ears and setup. Reducing highs are cut nicely and they have a good response for even dx if I pick up the volume on weak signals. But like you Jim, if I'm prepared for weak and crowded conditions, my headphones are on. Then only issue I have with the West Mountain speakers is that the volume is unbalanced a bit. The primary speaker (the one with the power and controls) is louder - noticeably. This isn't an issue for simplex QSOs but has me adjusting the volume/balance for split operations and diversity. These speakers have no balance control. Not sure if this is my pair or a characteristic of this design. Good morning Chris - I do not have direct experience with the speakers mentioned in your post, but I use a pair of JBL Control 2 powered studio monitors. They are very accurate and, perhaps most importantly, do not seem to radiate detectable RF (or be susceptible to it). http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/ProductFamily.aspx?FId=64MId=5 73, Mike Alexander - N8MSA amsct...@comcast.net - Original Message - From: OE5CSP-Chris hans-christ...@gmx.at To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 3:00:29 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3 I´m currently using a pair of old TV-speakers and I´m still looking for good speakers.I´ve found the Dierking 40w speakers(http://www.eurofrequence.de/lautsprecher/)in the internet. Is anybody using them with the K3? Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
Hello Chris, I do not have any experience with the speakers you mentioned. Hopefully another person will have information for you. The JBL speakers that Mike mentioned are indeed excellent. I first learned about them when they were recommended to me by Bob Heil. If you use a pair of them you can take advantage of the K3's various audio effects. Regardless of the specific brand and model, a quality set of speakers (or headphones) preserves the fidelity of the audio from the rig to help dig that rare one out of the pile or QRM. I'm using the Inland ProSound 2000 multimedia speaker system. AC cable, no wall wart. Signal connector is mini-phone and fits the I/O firmly. Stereo AFX and Diversity image nicely with speakers about 30 apart. Running barefoot right next to the K3, I've never had any interference. Footprint for each speaker is 3.5 x 3.25. WalMart has these speakers for $10.84 (I paid $6.99 at MicroCenter about 2.5 yrs. ago). The specs say 3.6W x2. I have the volume set at 50%, and the volume on the K3 at 25% and its just right. They appear to be in stock in most stores in this area. The KLH versions are no longer listed on-line. However, there are a large number of small bookshelf speakers - often marketed as satellite speakers for home theater systems - available for ca. $40/pair from many sources. A few months ago I picked up a few surplus communications speakers (about 70 mm x 60 mm x 35 mm) from cellphone handsfree kits for around $5 each. They make outstanding speakers for the K3 as long as you're not trying to fill an auditorium. 73, ...
