Re: [Elecraft] Side KX and/or cover
Do most people who order the side panels also get the clear plastic cover? I'm trying to decide what, or if I need them. Bearing in mind that I'd saw a dime in half if I could spend it twice. I buy C-128 laser cartridges for my printer and they come in a fairly tough tubular bubble pack which just happens to be a perfect fit for the KX3, the Comet CAA-500 analyzer, or a 15A MFJ power supply. Each one makes for a package slightly smaller in diameter than a football (the brown pointed one, not the black white one). I don't do back-pack type operation, but they work fine for carry on baggage or the car trunk. 73, Charlie k3ICH - Original Message - From: dyarnes w7...@cox.net To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, January 31, 2015 11:51 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Accessing KX3 buttons when using Side KX Hi All, I have the Side KX panels on my KX3, and it's really not a problem for me. As has been pointed out, there are fairly large slots on both sides through which you can access any of the buttons on either side row. I suppose someone with especially large fingers might possibly have an issue, but in that case (or anyway!) just use the opposite hand! It is no problem at all accessing buttons on the left side with the right hand and vice versa. By the way, the left panel also has the two buttons identified that need to be pushed to turn the KX3 on or off. So, they obviously thought about this when they designed the panels and determined the slot size. One nice thing about the panels is that their size (depth) does not extend much beyond the main tuning knob. So, if you KX3 fit snugly in whatever you were using for a case before, it probably will still fit with the panels in place. I was slightly concerned about that when I ordered the panels, as I had already selected a carrying case, but there was no problem, before or after--and it is a nice, close fit. Anyway, at worst I would say it is a minor concern. Re: [Elecraft] Side KX and/or cover
I did and I'm Scottish, worse than that I am a Fifer! Seriously if you are getting the side panels, the clear cover is worth getting as well. It protects the rig quite nicely if you are stuffing it in a rucksack or something. 73 David Anderson GM4JJJ On 1 Feb 2015, at 13:10, Charlie T, K3ICH pin...@erols.com wrote: Do most people who order the side panels also get the clear plastic cover? [Elecraft] Side KX and/or cover
I bought both, and it turns out that the covers are more useful than the side panels alone are. Previously when packing the KX3 and PX3 I had to give them extra space because I didn¹t want anything touching the panel or knobs. With the covers in place I can get more in the back pack rather than less, as they protect the face of the instruments allowing for more stuff to be packed against them. [Elecraft] Side KX
Don Wilhelm said: It all depends on how you depress the buttons - which fingers you use and what angle your fingers use to 'attack' the buttons. I agree, I have SideKX on my rig and I use it for testing, so I turn the rig on and off many times each week. Once you get used to approaching the buttons from the center of the rig I find it is a non-issue. I have never really heard of anyone complaining about this in the past. Just my $0.02 worth. Re: [Elecraft] Side KX Parts for KX3
I am resenting this, as the original has not appeared.br/br/I am also awaiting delivery, I expect the usual nonsense with Parcelforce who handle the UK delivery, where they pay any duties and VAT and then send a letter to me asking for payment of those charges and their handing fee on top of that, before they arrange to deliver the item to me. This happened recently to me when I ordered a used xtal filter from the US and I had to pay about £34 before I got the item. It is the extra delay that especially annoys me, in this day and age to write a letter and post it to me to tell me what the charges are is ridiculous.br/br/Oddly when I order from the East, the item just drops through my letterbox. I ordered an FG01 antenna analyser on Saturday evening and it was on my doorstep on Tuesday morning - all the way from China.br/br/Still waiting patiently for my KX3 which I ordered from our local and only ham store in GM last week, latest is that it will be here tomorrow. The big show down South has delayed things apparently. I could have ordered it directly from the USA saving a few hundred quid, but I couldn't be bothered dealing with Parcelforce, besides I get a 2 year warranty from the UK supplier. br/br/73br/br/David Anderson GM4JJJbr/br/br/br/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Side KX Notes, etc.
Yup, the nut on the MIC jack is definitely NOT 3/8. It's a 10mm metric. My SideKX Plates Lexan cover are on the mail truck for delivery sometime this morning. My carrying case for the KX3 is a Pelican knock-off that I got from a surplus firm down in Florida and I originally had cut a piece of foam to cover the knobs LCD, but with the handles Lexan cover, I'll have a bit more room in the case (it's deep enough) to carry the microphone (which I seldom use, but carry anyway for emergencies), a 14 volt 3 amp (old flat screen monitor) power supply, small dummy load and connectors/adapters. Anyone going to HamCom in Plano, TX next week can stop by the Elecraft booth if they want to see it. I'll have it on display there. Jim - W0EB I received my Side KX plates and Lexan cover for my KX3 today. Here are a few notes some of you might find helpful. 1. The instructions say to use a 3/8 nut driver to loosen the MIC nut. I found this did not work, but a 10mm open-end wrench worked perfectly and did not mar the case at all. Keep the wrench perfectly aligned with the case, and apply no pressure downward on the KX3 side case. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Keep the wrench perfectly aligned with the case, and apply no pressure downward on the KX3 side case. 2. I had no trouble installing the end plates without splitting the KX3 case. 3. With the Side KX plates in place, my KX3 will still fit inside a Pelican 1170 case when the top foam is cut away to accommodate it. By leaving just a little foam around the edge of the Lexan, it holds the whole shebang nice and tight. The lid of the 1170 will close just fine with or without the Lexan cover. I might consider gluing some soft cloth material to the top of the 1170 so it does not mar the Lexan. I can't quite tell if it is actually making contact. 4. After lots of experimenting with various cases (I'm embarrassed to say how many), my favorite is the LowePro Adventure 170. It allows the KX3 to be stored vertically, and works even better with the Side KX plates and Lexan cover. The Adventure 140 is similar but much smaller. The 170 allows me to carry my log, notepad, Koss PortaPro headphones, small speakers, wire antennas, keys, mic, battery pack, cables, chick magnets, cow magnets, and even a small water bottle. 5. The Side KX plates are very well made. I would have preferred the Lexan be just a tiny bit thicker, but it seems like pretty tough stuff. 6. After considering many options to protect my KX3 while X-C skiing earlier this year, I decided the toughest, lightest package was actually a KX1 in a Pelican 1060 Micro Case. It is pretty much bombproof. 73 Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
