Re: [Elecraft] SideKX
Good news regarding the interference between the 73CNC replacement tuning knob and the SideKX cover. Per Mike NT8O at 73CNC a new lower cost version of their finger dimple spinner tuning knob is in the works that will clear the SideKX. He is forecasting a release date of Dayton 2014. Re: [Elecraft] SideKX
My Side KX arrived today, within minutes the side panels were replaced and the perspex cover snapped into place. I'll add my support for this add-on as well. Promptly dispatched after order, arrived safely and I'm now happier to put the KX3 in with my 'stuff' when I am away on holiday or with work, which may well be in the next couple of weeks as there's a meeting down in Burgess Hill arranged for a couple of weeks time and I may well now take the KX3 and a simple antenna away with me to see how it performs. Highly recommended if you have or are thinking of buying a KX3 with the intention of lugging it round in suitcases and perhaps balancing it on places where it might fall over, this option will give you peace of mind that the knobs will be protected and the cover will keep the dust off untill you are ready to go on the air. If you didn't know that it was an add on, you'd think the radio was designed with the replacement panels and perspex cover because they fit so well together. I have it too and I like it. Only caution - when you remove the cover carefully remove it straight up and not lift up on one side. The is a risk of putting a lot of lateral force on the side buttons. Pulling straight up ensures, the cover does not apply any side force on the buttons while being removed. Perhaps - Scott can tweak the design so this is not possible. A quick fix is to relieve the middle portion of the cover at the ends. Re: [Elecraft] SideKX
Another tweak would also be nice . . . Either of two modifications would be nice when the main KX3 VFO knob has been replaced with the 73CNC weighted tuning knob (http://www.73cnc.com/product_p/kx3deluxe.htm). I am assuming both the SideKX and the 73CNC people will look to the other to make the necessary correction, so in the end probably nothing will end up happening. The problem is that the 73CNC weighted tuning knob, while an exact duplicate of the stock KX3 knob, ends up being a silly little millimeter taller than necessary to clear the plastic cover. The curve of the cover is just enough lower that itcannot snap cleanly onto the KX3. While barely managing to clear therow of buttons, it DOES put those buttons at risk. One can live with it if one is carefulwhenplacing the cover on the radio, but the cover cannot completely snap in place with the 73CNC knob installed. It should be noted, however, that the 73CNC weighted knob was machined to be an exact duplicate of the KX3 knob, which it is, and is beautifully done.Clearly, 73CNC was unaware of the SideKX cover when the weighted knob was being designed.Perhaps likewise for the SideKX people. In any event, it's neither manufacture's fault. But a tallercover would be nice and probably the easiest to remedy. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 10/9/2013 11:27 AM, Ariel Jacala wrote: I have it too and I like it. [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3
This has to be one the very best accessories ever made for a radio. After seeing the KX3, I thought it could become the ONE radio Ecomm groups could standardize on if it were hardened in some way. Scott, AK6Q, did it. His website is www.gemsproducts.com In typical ham style, I didn't read the instructions. I simply loosened the four thumb turn screws, removed the 4 small Phillips screws, took the nut off the mic connector, and replaced the panels. It took just a few minutes. After reading the instructions, I see I did it all wrong, but still with a good result. Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3
There were instructions? I thought that paper was to keep the side panels from scratching each other ;) It only took mere minutes to install the side plates. The cover keeps me from scratching the display or tweaking knobs when I put the radio in the backpack. The Lexan is a little thinner than I would have thoughtbut it is Lexan and I doubt I'll ever break it. Nice to see the plates were ground to metal at all the appropriate places instead of me having to do it myself. To be honest...I think Elecraft should buy Scott out and ship new KX3's from the factory this way. 73 Lee KK4JSJ On Wednesday 06/05/2013 at 12:55 pm, Dick, WN3R wrote: This has to be one the very best accessories ever made for a radio. I think, there is no need to buy Scott out. Elecraft could just co-operate with Scott and offer his product through their site. Similar to the way they do it with Buddipole. Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3
I would like to move the entire K line as a complete already assembled package. (I can use another radio for my remote operations.) I'd like to see a GOTA/travel case for the entire K line that has the following features: It must be RUGGED! Nice appearance during use Allows protected safe movement of the ENTIRE station as a single unit Room for accessories (SLUSB for example) Extra space used for 'stuff' during shipping (change of clothes?) Has complete secure (lockable) covering during movement Allows for excellent cooling during operation (take the entire back off?) No set up once moved; simply connect power, laptop and antennas, it's done Basically a nice box (XYL approved), remove the front and rear covers for radio use and secure enough that you would be comfortable for the airline gorillas to toss underhand. Besides for flying to a new location, it would make my station much easier to move into the RV. It doesn't have to be a tower, a cube would be fine, as long as I don't have to (un)assemble the wires (too many, makes it a pain to move). Keeping the price under a few hundred $US would be a great bonus too. 73, Rick wa6nhc K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500 -Original Message- From: Igor Sokolov I think, there is no need to buy Scott out. Re: [Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3
I just installed the SideKX yesterday and agree they are very useful and a great addition to the KX3 - what a nice design! Only minor nit is that the silk screened letters on the left panel are not of the same quality that the original Elecraft panel.
