[Elecraft] T1 ERRATA

2005-04-01 Thread W2AGN
I was pleased to complete my T1 yesterday, after receiving a couple of missing
1/8 watt resistors from Elecraft. Everything worked right away. Happy Dance
time..

Then today..I receive another envelope from Elecraft with Errata, changing R1
and R2 to 1 watt, and T2 to 2 stacked cores. Oh Joy, now I get to take it all
apart, desolder the resistors and T2, all while trying not to melt anything I
shouldn't.

Elecraft really pulled an April Fool on me!

Hi, John:

That change was to beef up the bridge circuit transformer. After really
beating up some T1's to see what they'd take, it was found the original
transformer can run warm enough to cause the bridge of work incorrectly
under some conditions on the lower bands.

Those two resistors are very easy to get to. Remove T2 first and you'll find
one of them right next to the row of inductors near the BNC end on top of
the board, and the other one on the bottom of the board near the edge
between the BNC connectors. They are well away from any sensitive relays or
other such parts.

You'll find T2 with two stacked cores a tight fit, but it does fit FB and
will run very cool under all normal conditions on any band. Follow the
procedure in the errata in which you solder one end of the green primary
winding in before installing the transformer and it'll go in easily.

BE SURE to wind T2 with EIGHT turns. I understand that a few of the errata
sheets may have escaped saying seven by mistake. That transformer gets EIGHT
turns just as shown in the picture and the same as in the original T2 you
are removing.

Now your T1 will be even more robust than ever.

In spite of the embarrassment and cost to Wayne and Eric to deliver a change
so quickly, it wasn't an option to ignore that weakness in the T1. It's now
the Elecraft way. Indeed, they were scrambling over the holiday weekend to
get the change out ASAP. You get a stronger, better tuner as a result.

Well, I just finished doing the changes and everything is OK. Didn't melt
anything, and everything fits, and the T1 still works!

I wasn't picking on Elecraft, just noting that I am not one that should be
given an extra opportunity to screw up!

My main complaint about the T1 is...why didn't they come out with it sooner?
It is the neatest, handiest little tuner I have ever seen!

How hard would it be to beef up a T1 to handle 100W? A few extra cores, bigger
wire, higher voltage caps

..from the one who used to run his QRP K2 at 22 watts output.

Glad you like it, and tell your friends :) I was looking at the LDG
Z100 sitting on top of an FT-817 in a photo, and I suddenly realized
that no one made a really compact low-power tuner.

A few reviews of the tuner have been posted at:

http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/4956

This would be a good place to comment to the world at large about the
T1, should you feel so moved.

I would love to, but AB7RG, one of the poobahs of Eham.net banned me from
posting anything on Eham. Actually, it was because I spoke in the defense of
another Elecraft list member who had an article turned down by Eham because
it was too pro-K2. This same guy threw me off the TenTec list some time
ago, again, for commenting that the K2 was superior to the Argonaut V. So, He
actually put in my Eham profile that one of my other hobbies was making
trouble on Eham.net, and banned me from posting anywhere on Eham. I could
get around it with a phoney login, etc., but why bother? These folks aren't
worth it.

That's a question for Wayne!
