[Elecraft] PCB Cleaning

Is it necessary to clean the K2 circuit boards, say with alcohol, before

[Elecraft] PCB Cleaning - followup

2024-03-05 Thread Harold Howells
I may have answered my own question by going back through the first part of the
manual. It emphatically says to not use any solvents at risk of voiding the
warranty, I have read before though that cold solder joints can result from
dirty circuit boards. Any thoughts? Thanks. HH

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-05 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Paul,

Could you please post the TX gain parameters
recorded by the K3 Utility at the 50 watt level
for all bands?

If there is a significant difference in those gain
parameter values between adjacent bands (say
30 and 17 meters) and the value on the 20
meter band, that may be an additional clue.

The bandpass filter bank may be at issue here
since you've checked the appropriate LPF.
If there's a problem with the relay contacts
on the relevant BPF or LPF section, that may
also reduce the TX signal level and force
an elevated TX Gain parameter value for that
band.

Keith, WE6R has a checklist of steps to
try when diagnosing low TX output power.
I recall he said to contact supp...@elecraft.com
for that document.

[Elecraft] AX1 40 meter coil with KH1

2024-03-05 Thread William Combs via Elecraft
I was wondering if the 40 meter coil from the AX1 could be used with the KH1.
Don’t know if it would connect to the KH1. But now with the new right angle
connector (not yet released), it would seen more likely to be a possibility. Or
not?

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-05 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Hal,

The numbers themselves have meaning to the
DACs inside the K3, but in terms of actual
units I don't know. The key thing is that as
those values are increased, the drive levels
from the TX DACs are increased, though I
don't know if the relationship is a linear one.

The gains of the LPA and PA stage transistors
fall off at higher frequencies, so one might
expect TX Gain parameters on those bands
to be somewhat higher than on the low bands.
However, if two immediately adjacent bands
have very different TX gain parameter values,
the likelihood is that something is amiss
in one of the filters (either BPF or LPF) and
the associated relays that select the filters.

Howdy William...

I use the AXE with the KH1 for 40m with the 32ft counterpoise from the

made POTA contacts with that setup.

When I move to the higher bands, I just leave the long counterpoise
connected. The KH1 doesn't mind and matches the higher bands fine.

I have not kept notes on my matched SWR readings, but I should. I'm
usually wanting to get the activation moving and get it done. Maybe I
should just take the little rig out in the front yard and play a little. ;)

[Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-05 Thread Paul Kent

My K3/100 gives a high DC current warning when transmitting on 20m with power
settings above 75 watts. Maximum output is about 80 watts and is unstable. All
other bands perform normally with full 100w output and normal current draw. (50
ohm dummy load) I have done the TX gain and wattmeter calibrations, finding no
issues and with no change in symptoms. The output LPF is shared with 30m and I
replaced all the capacitors in that circuit, also with no change in symptoms.
Any ideas on what may be causing this problem?

Re: [Elecraft] PCB Cleaning - followup

2024-03-05 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Harold,

It's certainly true that cold solder joints
can arise from dirty/corroded PCB solder
lands. The Elecraft boards in my K2/10 (now
17 years old, built by me) are very good
quality with plated-through holes and
durable solder mask. I had occasion
to open my K2 to install the SSB and noise
blanker modules last week, and the boards
look as new as they did 17 years ago. I
had more trepidation about the rework
and removal of some components than
I ever did at the initial construction.

If you've not had much soldering practice
recently, I suggest doing some practice
soldering of wires and trimmed component
leads to re-acquire your skill. It will come
back..

Cold solder joints might be caused by a dirty solder PC board BEFORE the
soldering was done, but I can't think of a single reason why a good
solder joint would turn into a cold one from crud on the board.  I would
be curious where you read that myth.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

My K3/100 gives a high DC current warning when transmitting on 20m with power
settings above 75 watts. Maximum output is about 80 watts and is unstable. All
other bands perform normally with full 100w output and normal current draw. (50
ohm dummy load) I have done the TX gain and wattmeter calibrations, finding no
issues and with no change in symptoms. The output LPF is shared with 30m and I
replaced all the capacitors in that circuit, also with no change in symptoms.
Any ideas on what may be causing this problem?

[Elecraft] KH1 -

2024-03-05 Thread JCG
The KH1 seems to fulfil my need of a 40 to 15M CW QRP rig with SSB and
AM reception capability. I'm currently studying the manuals issued by
Elecraft and have a first question: did an OM or YL use the KH1
Programmer's Reference to precisely set the KH1 to his needs, using for
exemple a Putty terminal emulator? I plan to use it in Thailand and I
need to precisely set band edges (7.0 to 7.2 - 10.1 to 10.15 - 14.0 to
14.35 - 18.068 to 18.168 and 21.0 to 21.45) outside of which TX must be
blocked. According to the Programmer's Reference manual (page 6 -
TXL/TXH (Transmit Limits; GET only) FORMAT: TXLn; or TXHn; where “L”
returns lower limit, “H” returns upper limit,
and is 0..4 for 40..15 meters. Reponse: TXLnF; where F is
limit in kHz.) this seems to be possible. Did a member already use this
remote setting procedure?
