Not sure about Entourage '08 but the 2004 version counts groups in the
address book. Do you have any groups in Entourage? If so, they won't be
included in the Address Book contact count.

I've got a different no. of contacts on Entourage 2008 (1979) than in
 Address Book (1959). I'm using OS X 10.5.4 and Office 12.1.1

I've tried resetting sync services from Apple's system preferences. Then
deleting everything from Address Book and tell the Sys Pref to move
everything from the computer (empty Address Book) to MobileMe. After that,
I unchecked sync services in Entourage 2008 and when I rechecked it to start
it again, I selected Entourage over writes Address Book.

 What else can I do?
 TIA

Entourage Database problem

2008-07-25 Thread Peter Rasmusen

Hello Good People

A friend on mine who uses Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Microsoft Office X ran
into a problem, where Enrourage said The Database is 4GB and
rebuild the database.

We agreed this was a good time to clean up her inbox.

However ... when we rebuild the database ... it takes forever and
nothing happens. Progress bar didn't move a fraction of an inch and
Enrourage froze every time we tried.

We left it running for almost 48 hours and still nothing seemed to happen.

So I figured maybe a newer version of Office could handle that big
(too big, agreed) database. So she bought Office 2008 and we
installed it and it asked if we wanted to delete the old Office X ...
which we did.

Tried restarting Entourage and it asked if we wanted to import from
an older version and we said Yes and selected Office X and it
apparently found the old database and imported it.

It took about 1/2 second and theres 1 mail in the inbox Welcome
to Microsoft Entourage.

Thank you so much!

Now ... in Documents/Microsoft User Data there's a folder named
Office 2008 Identities and a folder named Office X Indentities.

Office 2008 Identities holds about 28.3 MB of data

Office X Identities holds about 8.23 GB of data (because there's not
only a Database file, there's also a file called Old Database - both
files are 4 GB).

And now we're stuck.

What would be my next step?

Can I import that database to another app like Mail or Eudora or
Thunderbird or .. and move on from there???

Can anybody walk us through this? All hints, tips and solutions will
be appreciated.

Peter

Re: Sync Services - not working for contacts

2008-07-25 Thread David Morganstein
Thanks, Dan! Yes, I have Groups in Entourage and I'll check if the no. matches
the discrepancy I see...that's probably it.

Something I want to check if anyone can tell me.

When we first activate Sync Services in Entourage Preferences, we're given a
choice: Entourage over writes MobileMe (formerly .Mac and Address Book),
MobileMe over writes Entourage or Merge the two. I have repeatedly used Ent
over writes (MobileMe ... and .Mac/Address Book in the past) as that is the
database that is most correct and up to date.

Is this choice used only once to initiate the sync'ing and thereafter changes
made in either one get reflected in the other? Or is it used to define the
ongoing relationship between Ent and MMe?

I have a suspicion based on what I am seeing that the rule selected remains in
effect after the initial sync. That is, I am seeing Entourage used as the
'truth'. Changes there show up on Address Book...however, changes made in
Address Book DON'T get transferred to Ent. Instead they are getting 'undone'
by a Sync.

So, does that initial selection among the three choices define the ongoing
relationship or is it just supposed to define a single initial sync?

TIA

It's only used initially; thereafter, the data flows both ways via the OS X
truth database. However, it only updates Entourage according to the setting
you selected: automatically (every 15 minutes I think), hourly, daily, or
weekly. Of course, you can manually invoke the sync and it will sync
immediately.

I have a suspicion based on what I am seeing that the rule selected remains in

If the Entourage data keeps overwriting the Address Book data, then
something is wrong. Test this by creating or editing a contact in MobileMe
and then invoke sync manually. You should get a dialog box asking you if you
want to allow the new contact changes. If you don't, try resetting sync data
(in the Advanced tab of MM prefs). If that doesn't fix it, you might need to
unregister your computers and resync everything.

This might help:

Probably is Apple's. We have informed them about this issue.

Yes, it works when the title box is checked.

Thanks for the workaround.

Now...who's bug is this to fix, Apple or Microsoft's?

Is your Title box unchecked? Check this box and see whether it works.

Read this article:

In case the above link does not work:

I have been successful in rescuing an Entourage X database, but it's not a
free service. As you have already found it's a very time consuming process.
You can contact me off list to discuss your situation.

Entourage has a strange way of numbering. It includes the header when you
select all for messages. For example, in the list of messages there are 7
messages for Entourage Talk under 3 subject headings. If you select all, it
will say 10 selected, 7 items displayed.

Contacts do not appear to have this ghost header included, but it does
include a group.
