One more thing. Entourage already has its preferences set to synch with
Address Book. And AAB remains empty, except for the 4 contacts that I have
added to Entourage in the past couple of days - those synched.

Re: Best methods to synch Entourage Apple's address book

2008-10-15 Thread Mike Dano
I was pulling my hair out with synchronizing issues with my iPhone for
several weeks. Sync services kept overwriting certain information in my
Apple Address Book contacts such as users AIM account information.

I am not sure that I totally understand how it is syncing but it seems like
the key to solving the problem was choosing the Merge sync option in
Entourage. This option appears in Entourage after you make a change to your
sync settings in the Entourage preferences.

I initially thought that the sync services was asking me how I wanted it to
handle the initial sync, but it seems like what you choose in the Entorage
preferences how it syncs every time sync services runs. I could be wrong on
this but all I can tell you is that I have not had any more problems with
data disappearing or being overwritten since I chose the Merge sync
option.

A couple of weeks ago I finally started using my .Mac account to sync
wirelessly via mobile me. I was hesitant to do this at first because I had
read about problems that some users were having with this and I was
concerned about really screwing up all my contacts and calendar information.
Mobile Me has worked great for me and I highly recommend it. I really like
having newly arriving calendar events pushed to my phone without having to
do a physical sync. It also is great to be able to make changes or add new
contacts to my phone and have them automatically show up on my computer.

That's my two cents. Best of luck!

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the contacts in Apple's Address Book
(AAB) disappeared. I don't know if Messed-up Me (Mobil Me's evil twin)
 caused that, or what.

Previous to that, as I recall, AAB was staying synched to Entourage, and
when I would go to Mobil Me all my contacts would be there.

Entourage is fine, no problem. I don't use Apple's address book much. I use
Entourage for 95% of my email and project stuff.

Years ago, I would use Paul's script, or manually drag vcards.

Latest version of Entourage (12.1.3) and Leopard (10.5.5) on a G5 Mac.

Turning OFF Entourage's synch preferences, then turning them back on again
did the trick.

The dialogue box came up asking for behavior, and I clicked to have
Entourage overwrite AAB.

Because sync is so messed up right now. I advise syncing from Entourage only
when needed. I would turn off all other syncing from Apple Address Book
while the Entourage -Address Book sync is taking place. Sync your data then
turn Sync Services off in Entourage preferences. Then let Apple's
applications sync.

Apple and Microsoft are working to improve Sync Services which were in an
unstable condition, but now with MobileMe, the situation has gotten worse.
