Must re-install Tiger, Office 2008. Any backwards compatibility issues with saved identities?
I need to re-initialize my old G4 PowerBook running Tiger (presently at version: 10.4.11) and Office 2008 which is at version: 12.1.1 (080522). I've saved my entire MUD folder, but I'll have to use the ancient original installers. That means that... ...Once I install the original versions of 10.4 and Office 2008 on it, I'll have to go through many, many, many, many iterations of software updates to both 10.4 and Office to get back to today's current versions of Mac OS 10.4 and Office - specifically Entourage. At what point during this install and update process can I (or should I) move my saved identities (and mail) back into Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008? As Office went through various updates, did the file formats of the database and other files change such that the original version of Entourage would not be able to handle them correctly? Are there any other things to replace or worry about? Or can i just import everything into Entourage right after installing the original version of Office and then work my way through the updates? Will there be any compatibility issues if I do that? Thanks, D. I would let Entourage open after you have installed all updates. It will create a new Microsoft User Data folder. Drag over the folders inside the Microsoft User Data folder to the new Microsoft User Data folder. There was an upgrade to the Entourage Identity. Use the Apple combo updater and it should be a quick install of Tiger. Diane has already provided you guidelines for updating. But thought I'd point out that you can actually install fewer than many, many, many, many software updates to both Mac OS X 10.4 and Office. With every update to an OS, Apple releases both a delta update and a combo update. The delta update is for those who are already at the latest version and only need to apply the newest update (e.g. updating 10.4.10 to 10.4.11). The combo update is for those who are a few versions behind and need to get everything since the initial reference release (the dot-oh release) of a the Mac OS X system (e.g. updating 10.4.0 to 10.4.11). Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC) http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html Microsoft doesn't provide a combo update with every update it releases but fortunately, they've released one for Office 2008 already. After you install Office 2008 12.0.0 then you can skip immediately to SP1 (12.1.0), which is a combo update and then just install the 12.1.1 update after that. But to take the headache out of both of the update processes, just use the Apple Software Update application and the Microsoft AutoUpdate application (found under Help menu in any Office application) and let them do the heavy lifting.
