Re: [expert] How do I set up a joystick?

If this is a USB sidewider that you are talking about, try modprobe
joydev.

Also:
  rm /dev/js0
ln -s /dev/input/js0 /dev/js0

might make life a bit easier.

Hope this helps. By the way, can anyone tell me how to calibrate said
joystck?

Hi.
I had the same problem in the past.
Today I can still have the problem: I only need to do a dummy write before

In other words, I had the same error, but it only appears when I had a dummy
write (simulated write, I don'k know if you understand me, my english maybe
is not perfect;)
When I not do a dummy write, the problem is missing.
Maybe It can help you ???

Not practically.  While decent motherboards socket A boards have
monitoring chips/buses, the most important value .. the cpu core temp
is bogus. Temps garnered from a thermistor (probe), no matter how well
placed on the die, are a guess at best. Like tryin to measure the
temperature of the wiring inside a wall, by pressing a thermometer
 against the sheetrock.

With the cpu's core temp jumping 10 to 20°C in a heartbeat under
instant load, a probe temp of 50°C from a Tbird or Duron is useless.
Even AMD docs now caution to add between 10 to 20°C to the reported
probe temp under load to best _approximate_ the actual core temp. Even
with this fudge factor, spikes in the core temp will not be seen.
Overclockers have long known / used this rule of thumb.

Current AMD cpu motherboards are ready, have been for some time, and
the Athlon4's will have an internal diode (like Pentium processors
have had all along) to accurately and usefully monitor the core temp.
The only way to sort'a kind'a accurately tell now if an AMD cpu is
experiencing intolerable core temp spikes, is if the system randomly
freezes or reboots (assuming everything else is in order).

Until AMD implements accurate core monitoring, the best fix if
you're concerned about cpu overheating is to underclock. Reduce the FSB
about 5% or reduce the multiplier by .5   Of course, case temp should
be kept at or near room temp, and a better than AMD 'retail' heatsink
and fan with thermal grease (not pad) should be used. Another trick is
to try an' reduce Vcore a little, no more than ~5% and increase IO
voltage up to ~12%. 'Course now this is a motherboard issue, you havt'a
 have a decent enough one to support doin' all this ;

Never mind, I found it. I needed to do a modprobe joydev and ns558 also

How do I set a video mode? (Under XFree86 4.0.3.) My XF86Config contains
Modelines for various low resolution video modes including 320x240, 400x300,

anything (never mind xmame). If I manually add 320x240 to any Modes
lines in XF86Config-4, or if I add them in XF86Config, I still don't get
them. Also, when I do XFdrake, it doesn't see the 320x240 or other low

If not, would I be able to use APM if I use uniprocessor kernel

My inability to use APM on my SMP machine, is the reason why I

sound playback works. However, playmidi still does not produce any
sound:

All I needed was the recognition of 1.5GB of RAM on my system. Simply setting

modules gives tons of errors :( The simply fact is that kernels provided
with LM8.0 simply don't compile when make modules is done! I find this really

   sfxload /usr/local/lib/sfbank/8mbgmsfx.sf2

So see if you can find some files named something.sf2 and try
loading them.

Another thing I've had to do to use jazz as a sequencer is to tell it
to never reset the MIDI, since otherwise it seems to unload the
sound fonts. So you might want to make sure you aren't running
anything that does that.

An excellent place to start is the Scientific Applications on Linux

[expert] Mozilla experts

2001-06-17 Thread David Boles

When I used to use IBM's OS/2 there was a line, I think is was in 'preferences'
that could be edited to fool sites to see the 2.xx Netscape so they would see
it aa a later version of Netscape and not complain.

Is this possible with Mozilla? My online banking site complains because Mozilla
reports itself as Netscape 6.1 which they don' support that version.

[expert] The big switch

2001-06-17 Thread Lyric

Hi all,

Currently I'm running two good machines, one for windows, and one for
Linux which acts as my server.

However, I'm picking up a new dual P3 motherboard and two 750 chips on
monday, and was thinking, since I'm doing mostly C++ work it might be a
better idea to just put Linux on that (originally that was going to
replace my Windows machine).

After thinking about it some more, I thought I might just switch over to
Linux completely. Most of what I do is coding, and whatever else is just
standard web browsing and email. I already use pine for all of my email.

My only concerns are how well Mandrake 8.0 would support a dual P3 750
setup using the VIA 694 northbridge. I know in the past, with my current
linux machine, I've had to set agpgart=apg_try_unsupported to use nvidia
drivers for example.

I just want to make sure that everything is going to work, and work well,
before I spent a day setting everything up the way I like it.

I'd like to get some reassurance from others that might have recently
switched over completely, as well as people running SMP systems as
workstations.

Thanks

Current Linux kernel 2.4.3-20mdk uptime: 12 days 21 hours 52 minutes.

Re: [expert] How do I set up a joystick?

2001-06-17 Thread jose orlando t. ribeiro

Hello Ken!

There is a homepage at home.wanadoo.nl (I don't remember the full URL)
that helped me with that sequence:

   | Adding Joystick Support:
   | For 2.4 kernels only
   |
   | 1. Enable the PCI port:
   | insmod ns558
   | 2. Load Input Modules (may not need if compiled
   | insmod input
   | insmod joydev
   | 3. Load Joystick drivers:
   | insmod gameport
   | insmod analog (or whatever your driver is called)
   | 4. Fix your Joystick device:
   | mv /dev/js0 /dev/js0.bak
   | ln -s /dev/input/js0 /dev/js0

But I had to do that sequence... see what works for you...

  1-insmod gameport
  2-insmod ns558
  3-insmod input
  4-insmod joydev
  5-insmod gravis
  6-mv /dev/js0 /dev/js0.bak
  7-ln -s /dev/input/js0 /dev/js0

orlando

ps: at line 5 I'm using insmod gravis cause I'm using a Gravis
Xterminator pad... use the module correspondig to your joystick
(thrustmaster, sidewinder, analog,...).
