[expert] LM8.1 -- no sound

2001-11-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Just downloaded and installed LM 8.1 (clean, fresh install).

I have so far had only one problem that mystifies me: sound.

I had no problem whatsoever having LM 8.1 detect and configure my new SB16
ISA card. I was able to hear both Linus' voice and the midi sample just
like always. When I installed and configured RealPlayer 8, I heard the usual
Welcome greeting. But, for some reason, ever since when I try to play
RealPlayer I get an error message saying that some other application might
be using my sound card. Well, I went into KDE's Control Center and turned
off all sound to avoid conflict. Still, no sound. So I went back to
sndconfig (which I always do in the console, NOT in KDE), and tried to
reconfigure my sound card. I get an error message every time that says:
cannot find /dev/audio. Totally mystified.

By the way, what is /dev/shm, please. Have never seen it before:

Here it is under df:

[sher@Mindspring sher]$ df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 3606476 1194228 2412248 34% /

none256688 0256688 0% /dev/shm
[sher@Mindspring sher]$

Thanks so much.

[expert] Writing from Linux to Win-NTFS

2001-08-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I recently tried to copy a directory from LM 8.0 to /mnt/windows.
Unfortunately, my Windows (on my dual-boot) uses the NTFS file system and,
worse, I forgot this fact when I decided to copy the directory. Konqueror
proceeded to copy them. But when I went to /mnt/windows, the
Linux directory that I copied was obviously not there since
Linux cannot write to /mnt.windows.

My question: What happened to this directory and files? Since they could not
be written to the /mnt/windows partition, did they just vanish into
cyberspace thin air? Or was the whole operation essentially cancelled by
Konqueror? Just wondering.

Thanks so much for your help.

[expert] Linux-Win -- Where have my backups gone?

2001-08-18 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

This should be a pretty simple question. I think I know the answer but would
appreciate an expert's confirmation:

I have a dual-boot LM 8.0/Win2000Pro system. My Win2000Pro uses the NTFS File
System. That means, of course, that Linux can READ NTFS files on my Win2000
partition but NOT write to them.

Unfortunately, I forgot this fact when I decided to copy a bunch of files as
a backup from Linux to Win2000. I used Konqueror, my File Manager, to copy
these files from their Linux directories to the /mnt/windows partition.
Konqueror proceeded to copy them. But when I went to /mnt/windows, the
Linux directory that I copies and its files were, obviously, not there since
Linux cannot write to /mnt.windows.

My question: What happened to this directory and files? Since they could not
be written to the /mnt/windows partition, did they just vanish into
cyberspace thin air? Or was the whole operation essentially cancelled by
Konqueror? Just wondering.

Thanks so much for your help.

[expert] Galeon won't start

2001-08-01 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I had this problem before and somehow or other it solved itself.

sher@localhost sher]$ rpm -q galeon
galeon-0.11.3-1mdk
[sher@localhost sher]$ rpm -q mozilla
mozilla-0.9.2-7mdk
[sher@localhost sher]$

Galeon won't start either when I click on the Galeon desktop icon or when I
type galeon as user in xterm. I even tried to start Galeon by adding
kstart to the executable line: kstart /usr/bin/galeon. Doesn't work. The
Galeon icon appears for a while in the panel, the icon spins for a good
while and then just disappears.

I went into xterm and typed galeon. I got a message that said:

Galeon is arleady running. Will use existing version.

(Perhaps not exactly what it the error message said but very close to it).

I recall the advice I got the last time this happened (about 6 weeks ago):
Use Xkill to kill Galeon by shutting down both galeon and galeon-bin.

I clicked on Xkill (in the KDE menu). The cursor changed to a death's head. I
then moved it over the Galeon desktop icon and clicked. I not only killed
Galeon. I killed ALL of the desktop icons PLUS the panel, leaving me with a
blank desktop. I clicked on the desktop and logged out, then rebooted. Still,
same problem. Galeon refuses to launch.

I typed top in xterm and could see no reference to galeon or galeon-bin.

I logged out of KDE and shut down the system, unplugged the power cable,
reconnected it, rebooted, logged back into KDE, tried once again to launch
Galeon. Again, same problem.

I launched Konqueror as root, went to /usr/bin/ and clicked on galeon. It
brought up the Galeon welcome screen, followed by a request for creating a
profile. So, Galeon seems to work as root. I decided not to proceed since I
don't need or want a root account of Galeon.

This is very puzzling. Unfortunately, I have exhausted my trial and error
options at this point.

As a last resort, before sending this message, I uninstalled galeon (rpm -e
galeon) and reinstalled it. Tried launching it again. Still won't start.

Would very much appreciate your help.

Thanks so much.

[expert] TVGuide javascript pop-up window fails

2001-07-31 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I am having a javascript problem when using Galeon/Mozilla on the TVGuide
online page. Java and Javascript are enabled in the Settings menu and Java
works fine everywhere else.

For some reason, the pop-up window with program details that's supposed to
appear when clicking on a program hyperlink does not appear at all. Instead,
I get the following message in the Status bar (it's not an error message,
just a status report):

Javascript: cl (60922,525791)

On the other hand, this pop-up window DOES come on in Mozilla. What could be
the problem, please?

I like Galeon very much, but I would really like to resolve this issue so I
won't have to go back to Mozilla everytime I need to use this feature.

Using the following:

sher@localhost sher]$ rpm -q galeon
galeon-0.11.3-1mdk

[expert] NTFS -- Thanks, everyone!

2001-07-19 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

My thanks to everyone who wrote in concerning the question of NTFS vs.
VFAT in Win2000 for my dual-boot LM 8.0/Windows2000 system.

Since I do little sharing of files between Linux and Windows, I selected
NTFS as my file system for Win2000. Everyone seems to admit that it is
superior, even far superior as a filing system to VFAT. So, it's worth
the trade-off in my case.

Thanks again, everybody.

[expert] Galeon AND Mozilla -- Simultaneously!

2001-07-17 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Just found out today that you CAN run Galeon and Mozilla simultaneously! How?

Well, you can't run them both at the same time IF the Mozilla version is
identical, i.e. if, for example, Galeon uses Mozilla installed at
/usr/lib/mozilla, you can't run Mozilla, that is, the /usr/lib/mozilla at the
same time that you are running Galeon (that is,
Galeon/Mozilla-usr/lib/mozilla).

However, if you download a tar.gz version of Mozilla or install a version of
mozilla in some other directory, you should have no problem invoking the
second Mozilla (in my case: /home/sher/mozilla/./mozilla) and running both at
the same time (which is especially useful if you need to run Mozilla's mail
but prefer surfing with Galeon).

[expert] IBM Websphere HomePage Builder for Linux -- Opinions?

2001-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I've recently downloaded the IBM Websphere HomePage Builder v. 4 for Linux
(60-day trial version). I would very much appreciate your opinions on this
program.

First, you can get the program from:

http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/hpbuilder/linux/download.html

Here are the files:

[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$ ls -la
total 43052
drwxrwxrwx2 root root 4096 Jul 12 04:23 ./
drwxrwxrwx 20 root root 4096 Jul 12 02:39 ../
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 8065661 Jul 9 08:31 hpb4pug.pdf*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 19874235 Jul 9 07:39
hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 14483967 Jul 9 08:26
hpbuilder-tutorial-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 1638464 Jan 20 17:17
hpbuilder-wine-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$

The Websphere HomeBuilder runs a special IBM version of wine. Installation is
absolutely automatic. You just rpm -Uvh the wine file, then the Websphere
rpms and that's it. You then type hpbuilder as user with the appropriate
argument, e.g.

$hpbuilder -e

brings up the Webpage editor.

$hpbuilder -c

starts the WebArt Designer interface.

That's it. You don't have to mess with the wine file AT ALL except to install
it. Once installed, the Websphere HomePage Builder automatically uses it to
launch its various programs without any action on your part. Wine remains
totally invisible after installation.

[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$ hpbuilder

Usage: hpbuilder [options]
-a start the 'Web Animator' program
-c start the 'WebArt Designer' program
-e start the 'Web page editor' program
-f start the 'File Transfer' program
 -g start online user's guide
-t start the 'Multimedia Tutorial' program
 -u clean up temporary file
 -h produce this help message
 -v report hpbuilder version
[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$

The program costs $69, so, if it's the right thing, it would certainly seem
to me to be a reasonable price to pay and a great way to support those who
support Linux, in this case, IBM.

Now, this program is also available for Windows.

MY QUESTION OF THE DAY:

In looking over the program, which has extraordinarily extensive
documentation (the User's Guide is over 250 pages long and in PDF format, to
boot! -- you got to give IBM credit here), I was very impressed (as a newbie,
of course) by all parts of the program. HOWEVER, the Linux version uses
Netscape 4.x as its browser of choice.

My question is: If you design pages using Websphere and Netscape 4.x in
Linux, how will these pages look in Windows (and on the Mac)? Websphere does
support the latest technologies and standards and protocols.

However, and here are my two questions, will using the Linux version of
Websphere with Netscape 4.x as the test browser guarantee

a) that pages and sites generated with Websphere will look just like the
pages generated with the Websphere for Windows version?

and

b) that pages and sites generated with Websphere, either for Linux or
Windows, be compatible with both IE and Netscape and Mozilla in general,
whatever the platform?

I could ask IBM these questions and I will. However, I wanted to get the
opinions of USERS. It's not just a question of $69. It's a question of an
ounce of prevention... I would like to know in advance whether Websphere for
Linux (and secondarily, Websphere for Windows) is the right tool for the job.
I'd hate to create web sites and pages and then find out I have been using
the wrong program.

One thing I am sure about. I would like to avoid at all costs using any
Microsoft web program like FrontPage. I have already seen what Word97 can do
to a web site, and I want to stay away as far as possible from Microsoft's
standards and tools. I would prefer to use a neutral tool that can handle
all platforms. I think the IBM Websphere program may be just what I need. But
I need confirmation from experts and users who have actually used it
extensively.

Thank you very much for listening and I hope to hear from you all.

[expert] Internet Configuration bug

2001-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Civilme:

Just wanted to report a minor but critical bug in the Internet Connection
Configuration. It happens both during Install and when trying to configure
Internet Connection from scratch in the Mandrake Control Center. This little
bug caused me no end of confusion and agony when I first tried to configure
my Internet Connection in LM 8.0.

Here it is:

I have two NIC cards on my system: eth0 (3c905b) and eth1 (Syslink tulip).
I connect to the Internet through eth0 and my LAN then connects my computer 1
to computer 2 by means of eth1.

The bug occurs if you choose to let LM 8.0 detect your NIC cards
AUTOMATICALLY. In my case, it selects LAN for my configuration. That's
wrong. I do not connect to the Internet on computer 1 through LAN but through
DSL. When I accepted this official detection by LM 8.0 and tried (several
times) to configure my LAN, I then found it impossible to install Internet
Sharing. I was very confused and almost gave up on Internet Sharing. But then
I decided to go against this official detection and chose DSL, which
brought up BOTH eth0 and eth1, configured eth0 for my Internet Connection and
completed my Install. Then, when I booted up, both eth0 and eth1 were
recognized, logged into KDE and clicked on Internet (Network Monitoring),
which connected me to the Internet using my ADSL eth0.

Once I was online, I went into Mandrake Control Center, skipped Internet
Connection altogether, went directly into Internet Sharing and used the
Wizard to configure my LAN. The Wizard reported that it would set up my LAN
using my eth1 (tulip). Right on the money. It then automatically downloaded
and installed all the necessary files and, bingo, in seconds, my second
computer was connected to the Internet using ADSL.

The point is that the automatic detection thoroughly confused me. I just
assumed that LM 8.0's Wizard knows better than me what ought to be configured
at this staqe. And LM 8.0's Wizard in this case was DEAD WRONG.

I wanted to let you know so that this bug can be fixed or else some text be
added to the configuration of Internet Connection AT THIS CRITICAL JUNCTURE
of the Install.

That's it.

All my thanks for a great job and a great distro.

[expert] Run-on lines, overlap of text in Mozilla -- Solved!

2001-07-12 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

This message concerns the problem of run-on lines and overlapping characters
in Mozilla 0.9.2 and, therefore, Galeon 0.11.1, that is, as Civileme
explains, in all Gecko engine browsers. See his answer below.

Thank you,

Benjamin

Thanks to Civileme's a) confirmation of the strange behavior b) explanation
of what's causing it and c) a clue about using your own fonts (see my full
explanation in my letter which went out just before I got Civileme's answer,
I have now figured out a workaround solution. Namely, make sure you UNcheck
or leave blank the option in Mozilla under Edit, Preferences, Fonts to allow
use of other fonts. Use your own fonts ONLY until this issue has been
resolved by the developers for the next version of Mozilla. If you use
Galeon, you don't need to do this twice, but you can do the same in Galeon
under Settings, Fonts by CHECKING Always use these fonts.

That's the best I could do, and, based on Civileme's report, it looks like
it's all we can do until this issue is resolved, hopefully in time for the
next Mozilla.

Sorry, Benjamin, this time we will have to wait for the developers. That
behavior is triggered by something like Java on some web pages and it comes

And it is linked to those browsers using the gecko engine.

[expert] for Civileme -- Internet Sharing -- Can you help?

2001-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Civileme:

I tried sending you a personal copy of this message but for some reason
it was returned to me. So, I am taking the liberty of sending it to you
care of the Expert list.

Thanks.

Dear friends:

I have a most unusual problem having to do with Internet Sharing in LM
8.0. This is the first such problem since I installed and configured
Internet Sharing in Lm 8.0. I would very much appreciate your
troubleshooting on this issue.

Here is what's going on:

NORMAL OPERATION:

Normally, I first configure my ADSL, usually during Install. Then,
during initial bootup and thereafter, I see both eth0 (3com 3c905B) and
eth1 (Linksys tulip) officially recognized during bootup:

etho identified
eth1 identified

Or something to that effect. I then log into the console (runlevel 3),
then log into KDE, click on Internet Connection. That connects me to the
network (my IP is Mindspring/Covad). And the Internet Monitor clearly
shows all three tabs for eth0 and eth1 and ppoe CONNECTED.

I then go back into Mandrake Control Center, Internet Sharing, run the
Wizard. It find my second eth1 card (tulip), downloads the necessary
Internet Sharing programs and, voila, it's done (enabled). And that's
the last time I need to bother with configuring Internet Sharing. It's
best, from my experience, not to try to reconfigure it or, unless you
are a computer programmer, things will quicly blow up in your face. It's
best to do this right after Install so that if something goes wrong, you
can reinstall your system and do it right. That's why I do it once and
then leave it alone. Whatever connection problems I have after never
seem to affect Internet Sharing. It remains solid and reliably
configured and always enabled.

My dual-boot Tiger AMD k6-2 (LM 8.0/Win98) with ADSL is connected by
means of a hub and crossover cable and patch cables to our second
computer, a Toshiba Win98. As I said in my previous letter, once this is
set up properly, it can weather any storm, even when the IP is down. And
it has held up flawlessly until now.

THE PROBLEM:

Now, for some ungodyly reason, after following the same procedure above
that has always worked before, things have gone awry:

When I boot up, neither eth0 nor eth1 are recognized. Nothing is said
about eth0 at all, and eth1 gets the error message: device unknown or
something to that effect.

I have tried removing both ethernet cards from my system, replacing them
back one at a time, reversing their location, etc. This only makes
things worse. My original installation of the the ethernet cards remains
the best one, the one that has always worked in the past.

Yet, when I log into the console and then into KDE and click on Internet
(Network Monitoring), I see eth0 and ppp0 CONNECTED. I check and indeed
I am online (ADSL).

Now, here comes the weird part. I now go into Mandrake Control Center,
Network Internet, Connection. I open it to see if the settings are
right. Then, suddenly, before my eyes, the eth0 and eth1 cards, which
lack their IP settings, suddenly come alive like Frankestein's monster,
i.e. the (correct) settings appear all on their own volition. I choose
Expert and check my LAN settings. They are all there just as it should
be. They would have to be. That's where the sudden appearance of the IP
settings has come from. But how?

I then look again in the Network Monitor and I see eth1 added to the
list of tab entries and now all three (eth0, eth1, ppp0) are working and
all CONNECTED.

Now, the first time I did this, our second computer automatically
started running ADSL. But, ever since, this manual intervention on my
part has failed to launch ADSL on the Toshiba computer.

What is going on, please, and is there a way to solve this problem. My
instinct, such as it is in these matters, tells me that it's probably a
very minor configuration issue, but I have no idea what and how to solve
it. I have already installed our system twice with identical results.

Finally, a question about LM 8.0's Internet Sharing Wizard. If you try
to reconfigure it, as I have found out the hard way, it gets all messed
up the second time and completely ruined the third time (i.e. second
attempt at reconfiguring it using the Wizard). Is there a way to delete
the Internet Sharing configuration MANUALLY so that I could then use the
Internet Sharing Wizard to configure it from a clean slate?

Thanks so very much. Looking forward to hearing from you.

[expert] Internet Sharing -- SOLVED!

2001-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Civileme and friends:

Well, as luck would have it, a minor error in KDE led me to the solution
of my Internet Sharing problem. All symptoms have disappeared. I have
checked several times by rebooting. Internet Sharing is once again
working flawlessly.

A KDE init file error led me to do an update of LM 8.0 (Install, Expert,
Update). In doing this, I was asked once again to configure my Internet
Connection. This in itself had nothing to do with my problem, since my
configuration was perfectly fine. However, a few minutes later LM 8.0
asked me which services I wanted to start at boot-time. And -- eureka!
-- when I saw named and found out just what it does, that is, that it
part of the BIND system (and I know, even though I am a newbie) that
BIND is one of the key programs that are part of Internet Sharing, I
realized from an earlier error message (where, during bootdown, I got a
red X for named) that apparently I had checked this critical server
off, that is, that it needs to be on every time you bootup. It was a
guess, but right on the money. I checked named, finished my Update,
rebooted and suddenly LM 8.0 recognized eth0 and eth1 during bootup like
it always used to. I logged into the console, into KDE, clicked on the
Internet icon (Network Monitoring), and, bingo, eth0, eth1 and ppp0 all
connected flawlessly. I checked our second computer, and, instantly,
ADSL was running there, too.

I am glad to have found the solution. I was about to pull out my hair. I
know that in these kind of cases, it is very difficult if not impossible
for someone to troubleshoot something like this correctly. There are too
many variables. I hope my explanation helps others who have a similar
problem. You have to check named ipchains iptables and any other
services that are needed for Internet Sharing. I just assumed that since
they were servers I didn't them. Normally, I don't use any servers. But
if you have installed Internet Sharing, you must use certain servers. LM
8.0's Internet Sharing (Mandrake Control Center, Internet Sharing
Wizard) does it automatically and it will work flawlessly (as it did in
my case for three months until yesterday). But you must not choke off
its air supply by checking off the servers necessary for its operation.
Keep the necessary servers on during bootup. If in doubt, ask the
experts on the list precisely which services are required.

Once again, my thanks to everyone who tried to help. I was lucky. It's
like finding a needle in a haystack.

Thanks again.

seem to affect Internet Sharing.

[expert] Urgent! Cannot reinstall LM 8.0

2001-07-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Due to human error on my part (a nice way to say that I goofed big
time), I will apparently have to reinstall LM 8.0. I set my Bios to
CDrom, inserted CD1 and started my reinstallation. I am an old hand at
this, so I should be able to do this blind-folded.

HOWEVER, suddenly, at the second stage, LM 8.0 stops at:

Probing for serial ports.

And it seems to stop at this point forever and forever.

How do I UNinstall Linux properly so I can REinstall it properly from
my CD?

All right, I'll reveal my human error: I inadvertently deleted my
/etc/X11/XF86Config files. I created a new XF86Config file, but, alas,
it's too late. LM80 cannot leap over that probing serial ports
barrier.

Thanks so very much, folks.

[expert] How to install EVERYTHING on LM 8.0?

2001-07-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

This may seem like a trivial question, but it's been driving me crazy. I
have to reinstall LM 8.0, and, for the life of me, I can't find any
option to INSTALL EVERYTHING. One click of the mouse and you just
install everything on LM 8.0 (at least the 2 CD version, which totals
3.6 gig, I believe). Red Hat 5.2 used to have that option. You could
just select Everything, relax, go for a walk, walk on your hands,
whatever. You didn't have to THINK about what to download and what not.
I switched to Mandrake after Red Hat 6.0 so i don't know whether that
option is still available in Red Hat. However, I can't help but wonder
whether a) such an option does exist buried somewhere deep within LM 8.0
or b) whether there is no such option at all, and if not, then, by God,
why not? I don't mean selecting groups of programs or sets or parts of
sets. I mean clicking on an option that says: INSTALL EVERYTHING, every
file and byte on these CD's. After installation, you can aquaint
yourself with all the goodies in LM 8.0, but why force the user to have
to THINK about what's on those CD's before installation. Just get it on
the hard drive first, get LM 8.0 fully installed and then you can enjoy
leisurely exploring its riches.

Does any of this make sense to you all? Has anyone ever wondered about
this. I mean, even if you have a 20 Gig hardrive, you won't be able to,
you can't install all of LM in one go. There is no option for it. Am I
right? I certainly hope I am wrong. I sure could use such an option
right now before I go really batty.

Thanks so much for listening. Looking forward to your answers.

Dear Larry and friends:

If libkdeprint.so.0 is part of kdelibs-2.2-0.beta1.1mdk.i586.rpm, then
wouldn't installing kdelibs 2.2 beta1 conflict with KDE 2.1.1?

Would you advise installing this kdelibs 2.2 beta by itself or should

wouldn't it be better to wait for the final release?

Thanks so much.

[expert] Linux Fragmentation -- Is the Unthinkable already here?

2001-06-27 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

If Microsoft were to cook up a plan to cause Linux to disappear in a virtual
Tower of Babel it could scarcely be more effective than that which has been
adopted by distributions on their own, voluntarily.

This is from an article by Dennis E. Powell in Linuxtoday (June 27, 2001)
(www.linuxtoday.com) entitled Separated by a Common Operating System.

What do our experts (and newbies) think? If this is true, then is Linux not
in deep trouble?

A longer quote from the article follows:

This column started out in the hope of comparing Progeny with SuSE; that
fell apart when I realized that Progeny's take on things, inherited from the
Debian to which I understand it remains true, is just too different from the
RPM-based-distributions' way of doing things for me to learn it in a short
time. What I went on to discover, though, is that the lumping together of
RPM-based distros really can't be done, either. They are beset by
incompatibilities such that they might as well be different operating systems
(with some exceptions for people who compile their own stuff, presuming that
they remember to install the -devel version of everything, which is also
ridiculous). Knowledge of one distribution has little to do with any other
distribution. This sort of thing occasionally results in indignant howls, as
when Red Hat shipped gcc-2.96. Usually, though, it goes largely unnoticed.
But it has its effect, and that is confusion among prospective users. Not
long ago, if you got a Linux distribution you got Debian, Slackware, or
something else, and the something elses were largely interchangeable as to
what they installed -- the differences were in installation and configuration
tools, the newness of the stuff included, and what applications were
provided. Upgrading was fairly simple, because an RPM for one would probably
work for all. And Linux desktop use grew.

Now incompatibilities are being introduced hand over fist, as distributions
fight for a bigger and bigger piece of a diminishing pie, until oneday one
will own all of nothing. Does this do anything useful for the distributions,
users, Linux, anybody? Well, no. And while I've singled SuSE out because it's
the one where I've most recently encountered this nonsense, no distribution
is exempt. If Microsoft were to cook up a plan to cause Linux to disappear in
a virtual Tower of Babel it could scarcely be more effective than that which
has been adopted by distributions on their own, voluntarily.

[expert] Configuring Real-8 on Moz 0.9.1 -- Please help

2001-06-18 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I am an old hand at configuring RealPlayer and Mozilla, but I am stumped this
time. I have looked through the Mandrake archives and don't seem to be able
to find the pertinent information. Perhaps this is because this issue affects
only Mozilla 0.9.1, which is very new. I am using the Mandrake version of
Mozilla 0.9.1 and the latest rpm8 rpm:

[sher@localhost mozilla]$ ls
galeon/ mozilla-irc-0.9.1-2mdk.i586.rpm*
mozilla-0.9.1-2mdk.i586.rpm*mozilla-mail-0.9.1-2mdk.i586.rpm*
mozilla-devel-0.9.1-2mdk.i586.rpm* mozilla-xmlterm-0.9.1-2mdk.i586.rpm*
[sher@localhost mozilla]$

rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs1.rpm*

I have made sure that my RealPlayer 8 rpm is properly installed and that all
my plugins and mime types are properly entered, first in RealPlayer and then
in Mozilla 0.9.1. And I believe they are.

When I go to a RealPlayer LIVE or TAPED streaming site and click on the link,
it launches the Downloading dialogue box, in this case, with the name of
the 8.ram file: Downloading cd4.ram on the dialogue box window title bar.

I am then asked:

What should Mozilla do with this file?

Two options present themselves:

1) Use default action for this type of file:

Open with application realplay

2) Use a different action for this file

a) Save this file...

b) Open with application...

Since I had already set option 1 above as default (Open with application
realplay) and had also entered it as a helper application in Mozilla,
Preferences, Navigator, Helper Applications (audio/x-pn-realaudio and
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin), and since the plugin clearly shows up on
Mozilla's list of plugins (Help, About Plugins), I click on option 1. I have
done this on all previous versions of Mozilla, and this would always
immediately launch RealPlayer. However, this time, nothing happens. Even when
I reset the default, I still can't get RealPlayer8 to come up. Only when I
select option 2 and navigate through the file system to
/usr/X11R6/bin/realplay does RealPlayer come up and play the link (either
live or taped). So, clearly RealPlayer CAN play live or taped links perfectly
well.

But why can't I launch it directly by clicking on option 1, which has already
been configured and should launch RealPlayer 8?

Thank you all so much in advance.

[expert] Memory secrets revealed!

2001-06-02 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Jose and friends:

[Using LM 8.0 on AMD K6-2 400 Mhz CPU)

Now that explains it!

If that there is one thing I cannot deal with it's uncertainty. So, out
of sheer curiosity, I overcame my dread of fooling with the memory
modules and decided to investigage. My Soyo motherboard has three
sockets, just as indicate, with each socket capable of holding up to 256
Meg. Thus three and only three modules are possible in different
combinations of meg sizes.

All three PNY modules are absolutely identical: PNY 128MB PC100 SDRAM 16
x 64 168 Pin DIMM. I bean with one 128 meg PNY module when I bought the
system. I now bought two new PNY modules.

Right Socket: the old PNY 128 meg module -- works perfectly.

Middle Socket: New PNY 128 meg module -- fails.

Left Socket: New PNY 128 meg module -- works perfectly.

Total: 256 meg.

Originally, I inserted both new PNY modules into the two remaining
sockets (Left and Middle). System froze in both Linux and Windows. I
tried to reinstall Linux with 384 meg of memory. Linux froze during
formatting every time and terminated installation. Finally, I removed
the middle PNY module, and this time Linux 8.0 installed flawlessly and
has been operating flawlessly ever since.

But, being greedy, I decided to insert the third PNY module back into
the Middle Socket. Linux balked and froze again. I quickly removed the
module from the Middle Socket, and Linux returned to its old, flawless
self (LM 8.0 with Reiserfs for all partition except the 512 meg swap
partition).

I knew from this that either my Middle Socket was defective or my second
PNY module was defective or both. Today, eager to put an end to the
suspense, I opened my Linux box (with only two modules working (Left and
Right Sockets) for a total of 256 meg and removed the working module
from the Left Socket and inserted it into the Middle Socket to see
whether it was the Socket or the module that was defective. With the
Left Socket empty, I still had only 256 meg. Guess what? Linux (and
Windows) worked perfectly with the Middle and Right Socket engaged! And
has been working perfectly all night without a single hitch or error
message.

I concluded from this, apparently wrongly, that since the Middle Socket
was working perfectly, that the second PNY module was defective.
However, from Jose's report, I see what went wrong. Here, again, is his
explanation (and, I might add, he knows my motherboard in detail since
it was he who selected it for me):

On certain types of motherboards certain types of RAM must be installed
in pairs... On later motherboards (such as yours) this condition is
not quite so
absolute but still exists in a form... I.E. 128+128 is ok, but 384 is
not

I'll bet that you could replace one of the 128meg modules with a 256 meg
module and still have no problems...

I.E 128+128+256

And that, I'll bet is what this is all about! I'll bet my second PNY 128
meg module is perfectly fine, and that I was able to double my memory
from 128 to 256 but that the next step must be doubling it again to 512
or not at all.

Well, I finally learned how to insert and remove a memory module
correctly. That was worth the cost.

Don't know if I really need 512 megs of RAM? Maybe for VMware? Will
think about it.

At any rate, I think the mystery has at last been solved. Simple math.

[expert] Memory -- LM 8.0 Install Is Success

2001-06-01 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

First, my deep thanks once again to all of you who wrote in to help.
You've all been great.

Recalling the sequence in which the memory modules were physically
installed in the Soyo motherboard, I decided to take the advice of
several of you and remove one of the modules. I chose the middle module,
and, bingo, Windows was running just fine on my dual-boot. I then
proceeded to install LM 8.0 and everything went just fine. 256 megs of
real RAM and 512 megs of Linux swap. On my ancient AMD K6-2 StarOffice
now launches in 4 seconds, complete and ready to go!

It may be that the middle socket is corroded and corrupted or else the
memory module is defective. No need to pursue this matter any further. I
am very pleased with my 256 meg of RAM. No need to tempt fate by trying
to add more. At least not for now.

Thanks again.

[expert] URGENT!Memory crashes LM 8.0

2001-05-31 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Using LM 8.0 on my AMD k6-2 400 CPU with KDE 2.1.1.

Just had my friend Bill, the computer expert, install my new PNY memory
modules. The two new modules (128 meg each) together with the 128 module
already on my system (there are three sockets on my Soyo SY-5EMA + Super
7 Mainboard version 2.0 motherboard) add up to 384 megs of real RAM plus
a swap file of 256 megs from my original installation.

[by the way, PNY memory chips for AMd K6-2 are extremely cheap these
days -- around $40 for each 128 meg module].

OK, I had no problem booting into Windows. Everything works fine in
Win98. However, I am having problems booting into LM 8.0.

First time I managed to boot into the console and then Linux froze in
KDE (during the desktop stage of KDE's graphical logging -- that is, I
was already in KDE but KDE froze when it reached the desktop part of
the KDE launch).

Second time, Linux froze during bootup itself with the following error
message:

Everything OK up to this point.

Starting httpd. OK

ap+t==0x55
Stoppibng myself... /etc/rc.d/rc: line 172: 1272 Aborted $i Start
Starting crond: /etc/rc.d/S90 crond: line 49
1439 Segmentation fault
$ni0 init log $INITLOG_ARGS-c $%

[I am not abosolutely certain of the $ni0 in the last line -- Ben]

I have no idea what to do. Would really appreciate an expert's help on
this. I have a feeling that somehow I need to tell Linux about the extra
256 megs of RAM.

Is that true? Do I need to manually tell Linux somewhere that my real
RAM has increased from 128 to 384 megs and does this in any way affect
my swap file of 256 megs of RAM?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you so much.

[expert] Urgent! Memory locks up II -- Can't install

2001-05-31 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I thought it might wise, instead of fighting this memory problem, to
just reinstall LM 8.0, to do a fresh install.

Well, that turned out to be dumb decision. Also a mystiftying one.
Install started fine (Expert mode), got as afar as partitioning,
partitioned my Linux hard drives (as I have done many times before).
Last time I had a perfect installation using the Reiser FS (for
everything, including the /boot partition).

This time, after setting the partitions, I clickded on format as I
have done many times before. What usually follows is the formatting of
my paritions, then I get the screen with the packages. This time,
installation suddenly stopped and switched to the console with an error
message informing me that the installation had terminated. This has
never happened before. Could this have anything to do with my new PNY
memory modules (256 megs of RAM in addition to my previous PNY 128 megs
of RAM).

One other thing:

Turns out I both Windows and Linux recognized my memory upon bootup. No
question about it. Everywhere, during bootup, at the Penguin console
login in Linux. In Windows, during bootup and under My Computer,
Properties, where the actual amount of RAM is indicated. And NO
exclamation marks of any sort in Device manager. But Windows would fail
to land on the desktop when I'd launch it with the Linux drives on. But
when I disabled the Linux channel, then Windows would land properly on
the desktop. I could also access the Internet using my Earthlink WinPOEt
PPPOE utility. However, when after being cleared for takeoff and fully
online, I'd launch Netscape in Windows and Netscape would freeze up.

Anyway, I went back to Linux and formatted my Linux partitions in Linux
and tried once again to install LM 8.0, selecting, as before, the Reiser
FS and a swap file of 400 megs (in addition to my 384 real meg of RAM --
assuming my two new PNY 128 meg memory modules are OK. Failed again.
Once again, installation terminates and returns right back to the
console.

Does anyof this have anything to do with memory modules, good or bad or
whatever.

My immediate problem is that I need to reinstall my LM 8.0.

[expert] Memory lock -- on way to recovery

2001-05-31 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Well, I have some good news to report:

I removed the middle module from my Soyo motherboard. My friend Bill,
who originally installed the memory modules, suggested that either one
of the PNY modules was defective or the socket might have been corroded
(it is after all two and a half years old). I think it may be the
socket. After repeated attempts to install LM 8.0 with 384 megs of
memory on board (3 memory modules), I removed the middle module and
found, to my surprise, that a) Windows was now working fine in every
respect and b) that I could no install LM 8.0.

Installation of packages is now in progress.

My thanks to everyone who was so kind to offer advice and suggestions. I
hope this reinstallation solves my problems.

I guess Lm 8.0 with 256 megs of RAM (and 512 megs of swap file ram)
isn't such a bad deal. Maybe I was being greedy.

When I split that in half, I'll stil have 128 for LM8.0 and 128 for
Windows/VMware (as raw disk). Of coruse, I won't try the VMware business
until I am absolutely certain of how it is done.

Thanks so much, folks.

Dear friends:

Looks like I was wrong. KDE's screensaver does work but only when set to 3 or
so minutes. I UNinstalled xscreensaver (rpm -e xscreensaver) and configured
KDE's screensaver (Control Panel, Look Feel). I set it for 3 minutes to
test it. The screensaver came up perfectly after three minutes. I then set it
for 15 minutes. Well, I came back after dinner and discovered a blank, dark
screen instead of the expected KDE screensaver.

What's wrong, please, and how can I correct this?

Thank you so kindly.

Dear Gary:

Thanks so much for telling me (and us) about the KDE Control Center,
PowerControl, Energy feature and its effect on KDE's screensaver. I unchecked
the Energy display feature and hope that this time KDE's screensaver works
the way it should and every time.

Thanks so much again.

[expert] Configuring VMware for raw disk?

2001-05-25 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I've been trying to configure VMware for my Windows 98 /mnt/windows partition.

I have an AMD K6-2 400, 128 meg of RAM. Installation of the VMware rpm went
off perfectly. I am speaking of the interactive installation procedure (I
think it's called the file vmware-config.pl).

I have a dual-boot LM 8.0/Win98 SE system. Linux is on hda and hdb and
Windows is on hdc, with the CD-Rom is on hdd.

I read the instructions on VMware's support page, changed the permissions on
the hda, hdb, hdc and hdd and then configured hdc as a raw disk.

The great thing about the latest VMware 2.04 for dual-boot systems is that
you do NOT have to actually install Windows in a virtual disk. You can just
invoke the ACTUAL, REAL Windows on your /mnt/windows partition directly from
within VMware. I know that to be true. I have done it. I just don't know how
to do it right, and I would rather not proceed until I am sure of what I am
doing.

The instructions say clearly to UNmount /mnt/windows BEFORE configuring
VMware.

First obvious question: Do you RUN Vmware with hdc as raw disk with
/mnt/windows MOUNTED OR UNMOUNTED? That is, do you have to UNmount
/mnt/windows every time you run VMware in this case or do you run Vmware with
/mnt/windows mounted?

I am afraid to proceed any further. I tried and experimented with various
configurations, but I think it's time for me to quit experimenting. I am just
an ordinary user and I'd rather not jeopardize my LM 8.0 installation.

I'd appreciate it if someone who has a how-to or step-by-step instructions in
plain English for my specific situation could direct me a web site where I
could find out how to configure Vmware properly, not only the /mnt/windows on
a dual-boot system but all the other details that are a part of it.

Thank you.

[expert] Not so graceful exit from Word97/Wine

2001-05-22 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

First, my thanks again to all of you who took out time from their busy
schedules to respond to my Word97/Wine query.

I added all of my Windows True Type fonts to Linux. You do that automatically
in LM 8.0 (available since LM 7.1 or 7.2) in K, Configuration, Other,
Drakfont. Just select all of your Windows fonts, click OK and, bingo, they
are now part of LM 8.0.

I decided to repeat this process (guessing correctly that I had to do this
again AFTER installing Wine and I was right!). I went back to MSWord right
afterwards and saw no font error messages (the infamous trebuchet font
message) during launch this time and found all of my TT fonts there, every
one of them, even the Cyrillic fonts (I am a Russian translator). Amazing.

I did not see any icon issues. Remember that I chose all native dlls, where
possible and for Window mode: Desktop = 1024 x 768. The perfect choice, I
think. MS Word appeared in half-size. I then expanded it and because of the
desktop size, it looked for all the world just like the real thing.

Well, I did a little more research at Wine headquarters
(http://www.winehq.org) under Search: Word97, etc. I found from the
correspondence that no one has succeeded in getting Word97 to work in
anything even close to a satisfactory way. I was lucky to be able to use my
mouse and keyboard and even print preview but no printing, no saving, and no
other menu entries were really accessible except the one that was put there
by Wine itself. So, perhaps the man (Jim) from codeweavers-wine tech support
was right after all.

So, unless Wine makes dramatic progress or someone has the magic key, I think
I'll just consider this an interesting experiment. Let's hope Codeweavers or
Wine itself succeed in making it work in time for Wine 1.0 or whenever. Until
such time, I bid this project my fond adieu.

All my thanks again for your kind help.

[expert] Word97 in Linux -- Mission Impossible?

2001-05-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have spent the entire evening trying to install Word97 in LM 8.0.

Well, I started my installation of MSWord97 after hearing from a man by the
name of Hoyt, who very kindly shared the basic facts with me. Following his
instructions, I downloaded the itcl rpm, the X11R6-contrib-lib rpm, then
uninstalled my current wine (rpm -e) , downloaded the codeweavers-wine file,
installed it. No problems. No errors. I then read the User's Guide on the
Codeweaver's web site, especially the section pertaining to dual-boot
installation of wine and then proceeded to configure the codeweavers-wine
using its graphical configuration tool. You can get the codeweaver-wine file
and plain English documentation at:

http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/help.php

For the record, I have included the .wine.conf file at the bottom of this
message:

I then tried:

$wine regedit

And the Windows registry appeared.

Then, I tried:

$wine notepad

And it appeared. I was able to write a few lines but could not save the file.
The hourglass kept spinning interminably and I had to shut it down with
Cnt+Alt+Esc.

I then tried to install Word97.

wine m:\setup.exe

(m is the default cd-rom drive in my codeweavers program).

1) When I chose the default /mnt/windows approach, I could not even get setup
to appear on the screen.

2) When I chose the /home/sher/fake_windows route, I succeeded in seeing
setup on the screen and even typed my name and registration number but setup
refused to go any further.

3) When I tried to access my Word97 program directly (it is, after all,
already installed on my Windows partition) with:

wine c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE

I did indeed succeed in launching MS Word! But, I could not do anything with
it. It appeared as a window within Linux, but my mouse and keyboard had no
effect on it.

Checking again the documentation on Codeweavers' page, I learned that you
need to run wine as root for Windows applications to work in Linux.
Actually, the User's Guide lists three workaround, including one tactic
involving a root-file in the user directory (which I tried but in vain) and
another having to do with umask (which I did not understand) and something
else that has to do with shadowing.

So, I have apparently reached a dead-end.

May I ask if I am close to success and, if so, if it's rather simple, could
I ask you for help with this last stage. It would be very useful to have
Word97 in Linux. And, of course, I will publish my instructions on the
Mandrake lists so that others can benefit from your expertise and my
experience.

Thanks so very much.

[expert] RE: Word97 in Linux using Wine -- official word from Codeweavers

2001-05-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Below is the official word on installing Word97 or MicrosoftOffice in Linux
using Wine, in this case, Codeweavers Wine. See below.

It would appear that if Codeweavers thinks it can't be done, then it can't be
done.

I have to accept his judgment on this score.

Just wondering: Has ANYONE gotten MSWord97 to work and to work
satisfactorily in Linux using Wine, any version of Wine? Some people have
written to tell me that they have. So, is the representative from Codeweavers
right? Or is there a workaround? What's the last word on this subject,
please?

(Please see my long letter on this subject yesterday).

Thank you so very much.

Ben,

You shouldn't waste a lot of time attempting to get office to install via
Wine. It simply doesn't work due to the installer that it uses. If you
want to get office to work under wine, install it to a windows partition
first, and just run it from there. Also keep in mind that very little of
office actually works under wine. Refer to the newsgroup or mailing lists
for more detail.

[expert] True type fonts in Word97/Wine -- How?

2001-05-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

WARNING: Please consider these comments about Word97/Wine in Linux as
strictly tentative and experimental and, if you decide to try to install
Word97 via Wine in Linux, do so at your OWN risk.

[ Same for automatic configuration of Internet Sharing using the new Mandrake
Control Center wizards. The Internet Sharing wizards do work, at least on my
system and very well, but the wizards have bugs in them and you will need to
use workarounds. See my recent letter on the subject. But do so at your OWN
risk, please].

I finally launched Word97 successfully via Wine in LM 8.0. I selected (in the
Codeweavers graphical configuration tool) for Window mode: Desktop = 1024 x
768. I tried Managed, but Word97 came up all messed up. I then tried
Unmanaged, but that gave me (i.e. X Windows) no control over Word97 (e.g. if
you want to shut it down, etc.). The Desktop option seems best because it
allows X Windows to manage Word97 and at the same time allows Word97 to
appear precisely in the same form and format it does in Windows.

I finally succeeded in getting the mouse AND keyboard to work. I was able to
navigate the menus with both mouse and keyboard, but not actually open up
most of the menu entries. For instance, I was able to open up Print Preview
and see the text that was to be printed, but when I click on Print, it would
not print. It would also not save. But I was able to open a document from
Windows, in fact, one document was in Russian, but then I realized that the
list of fonts in Word97 consists entirely of Type 1 fonts, and then I
understood what you meant. I have TT fonts installed in LM 8.0 and I use them
in Netscape, but how would I install them or make them available to
Word97/Wine? That seems to be the $64,000 question.

There were some minor issues, too, but if I can get Word97/Wine to recognize
my TT fonts, then I can really use Word97/Wine to check the conversions from
StarOffice. I wonder what else might be possible? Saving a file? Now that
would allow me to really use it if I wanted to.

Please remember that I have a dual-boot LM 8.0/Win98SE and that I have
already imported Windows TT fonts into LM via Drakfont. And, of course,
MSWord is alreadly installed on my real Windows partition.

I launched MSWord97 with:

$wine /mnt/windows/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/Winword.exe

You can also do it with:

$wine C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe

The quotation marks are necessary to allow Linux to handle the empty spaces
in the command line. Please note that the Linux command uses Linux's forward
slashes and the Windows command uses Dos/Windows's backward slashes.

I would be grateful for any leads on how to install TT fonts in Word97/Wine.

But I am quite encouraged by what I have already accomplished,
and I have a feeling that once the fonts are in place, I might be able to
make Word97/Wine do a lot more tricks than Codeweaver's tech support think it
can. Of course I may be wrong and may have to eat crow, but why not try?

I don't intend to pursue this matter of Word97/Wine longer than it deserves.
However, I am intrigued by the possibilities, by simply how much Word97 can
really do in Linux. Codeweavers says it can currently do very little. But is
that really true?

Of course, if this turns out to be a dead end, I am more than willing to give
this up gracefully and move on. I certainly hope that curiosity won't kill
this cat.

Meanwhile, my new install of LM 8.0 with Internet Sharing via Mandrake
Control Center is working flawlessly. Hope to keep it this way till LM 8.1
comes out.

Thanks so much.

[expert] LM 8.0 Internet Sharing -- Brief report

2001-05-19 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

After a week of trials and tribulations and several reinstalls of LM 8.0, I
finally figured out how LM 8.0's Internet Sharing works. I am not a hundred
per cent certain of this. But I think my conclusions are probably correct.

Right after first installing LM 8.0, I successfully installed Internet
Sharing using both Linuxconf and Mandrake Control Center, Networking. I think
I was just lucky. It lasted a good week and a half. During this period I was
spent much of my time testing the halt patch for Pierre Fortin and as a
result did an awful lot of shutdowns and reboots. Yet, my Internet
Connection and Internet Sharing (i.e. sharing my ADSL line with a second
computer) worked flawlessly.

I then did something stupid (I don't recall what) or perhaps something just
went wrong with LM 8.0 and I lost my Internet Connection, etc. I was never
able to get it back. So, I reinstalled my system several times, each time
experimenting with different things. Meanwhile, I had read comments by some
of Mandrake's experts and users to the effect that LM 8.0 was still unstable
in parts and that this was also true of the new Mandrake Control Center and
especially of Internet Sharing.

One thing seems obvious: it's best to use either Linuxconf (if you know how
to do that) or the Mandrake Control Center or the command line or Webmin to
establish Internet Sharing but it's better NOT to mix these methods. Stick
with one.

Now, I discovered during my install that LM 8.0 often misconfigures devices
or suggests the wrong course of action. For example, it wrongly configured my
floppy in /etc/fstab as /dev/zip instead of /dev/fd0. It also picked the
wrong Okidata printer from their list, something that LM 7.2 had no problem
doing with precision.

Now, back to Networking. if you are configuring a single ADSL or Cable card
(eth0, there should be no problem allowing LM 8.0 to configure it for you
during install. However, if you are setting up a LAN with Internet Sharing, I
would advise against it. LM 8.0 insisted on configuring my LAN during install
instead of DSL. That screwed up Internet Sharing after install. On the other
hand, if I selected DSL, it did correctly find both of my NIC cards and
correctly configured them, using pppoe but then, after install, when I went
into KDE and tried to connect, I found that it had not been configured after
all. So, it was back to the Mandrake Control Center, Networking, Connection.

So, it may well be better NOT to configure your NIC cards at all (if you have
more than one and are planning on setting up a LAN with Internet Sharing).

Here is what I would recommend, based on my limited experience:

Skip Network configuration entirely during install. Then, after install, in
KDE or Gnome go Mandrake Control Center, Networking, Connection. Now click on
Configure at the bottom right. Now configure your ADSL, both eth0 and eth1,
then press OK. By the way, I would advise using two entirely different NIC
cards for eth0 and eth1, i.e. each one should use a different kernel module.
In my case, eth0 is a 3com (3c59x module) card and eth1 is syslink (tulip
module) card. Now, click on Connect at the upper part of the box. This will
connect you to the Internet using ADSL or Cable. Now, you can reboot if you
wish in order to see both cards recognized during boot-up. They should both
receive green check marks next to them (eth0 -- green check mark; eth1 --
green check mark).

Now, go back into Mandrake Control Center, Networking and select Internet
Sharing. Do NOT select LAN. I don't know why. But instead of configuring your
connection, then your LAN and then your Internet Sharing (which always
resulted in some sort of configuration conflict in Internet Sharing, it's
best, from my experience, to proceed directly from Configure DSL (or Cable)
Internet Connection to Internet Sharing, skipping the LAN configuration part
entirely.

When I did this, i.e. when I click on Internet Sharing after configuring my
eth0 and eth1 (see above), everything worked perfectly. No conflicts this
time. Instead, Internet Sharing already knew about and recognized both of my
NIC cards and advised me that it would now configure my SECOND (eth1) card,
i.e. tulip and told me that it would use this card as my Network Adaptor to
my LAN. It then proceeded to create the LAN. It advised me to insert CD 1 and
installed a number of files necessary for Internet Sharing.

That was it. And the rest is history. I rebooted Computer B and instantly had
ADSL in both computers. And the same speed, too: 1250/s downstream and 315/s
upstream. Steady and reliable from Mindspring/Covad (Highly recommended. In
fact, superlative ADSL service -- though I should state for the record that
we own shares in Covad).

I certainly hope that LM 8.1 will improve upon LM 8.0 in many areas,
especially in the matter of Internet Sharing. I am sure it will. It's a joy
to have automatic Internet

[expert] MandrakeExpert -- Thanks!

2001-05-19 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

The new MandrakeExpert service is a fabulous addition to Linux-Mandrake and
Linux in general (in fact, it will eventually support not only LM but other
distros as well).

Unfortunately, like anything new, there are bound to be bugs in the system.
In my case, I had asked for help with Networking and received a number of
brief responses from several experts.

Meanwhile, while waiting to hear from them this week, I managed to solve all
of my outstanding problems (knock wood!).

Now, MandrakeExpert has a section called Comment, where you are supposed
to, quite obviously, send your comments. Unfortunately, this section is not
functioning properly. I wanted to thank the experts who responded. Instead, I
was only allowed to send my comment to an expert who happened to be
available, who just happens to have been the wrong person. So, I went ahead
and sent it to him, anyway (his name is Mark). I think he'll quickly realize
that this message is meant collectively for all the experts who responded to
my question.

If you recognize yourself as being one of the experts in question, once again
my thanks.

[expert] Config file content could not be interpreted ??? (Internet Sharing)

2001-05-18 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Internet Sharing -- Almost there!

Thanks to a tip from someone on the Mandrake list, I realized that you can't
set up Internet Sharing graphically using BOTH Linxuconf AND the new Wizards
in the Mandrake Control Center. That's what was causing all the trouble these
past few days.

Apparently, there is no automatic configuration for Internet Sharing in
Linuxconf in LM 8.0. So, I decided to do everything in the Mandrake Control
Center, i.e. I wiped out all the configuration records from Linuxconf,
unchecked Enable for both eth0 and eth1, just kept my host name and domain
(required), rebooted and started from scratch in the Mandrake Control Center.
There are two sections in the Control Center under Networking and only two
Connection and Internet Sharing. I selected Connection. Here there are three
subsections (if you switch to Expert: a) Configure (to configure your
Internet connection), LAN, and Connect. I selected Configure, then DSL
(even though the Wizard selected LAN since I had two ethernet cards. I had
tried that earlier and it didn't work. Internet Connection has to be
configured first). I then selected eth0 as the card for my ADSL, selected
pppoe, etc. Everything configured perfectly. I then went into the LAN section
and found that my eth0 and eth1 were already configured perfectly. I then
clicked on Connect and was immediately connected to the Net. Tested with
Netscape and RealPlayer. Then rebooted to test if the settings stuck. The
settings have not changed and are the same I used earlier in my first
installation of Internet Sharing after first installing LM 8.0:

eth0
10.0.0.10
255.255.255.0
eth0
3c59x

eth1
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0
eth1
tulip

I now went into the second section of Networking, namely, Internet Sharing. I
did this successfully right after installing LM 8.0 the first time around.
The installation took two minutes with instant Internet Sharing in my Toshiba.

I think that I all I need now is to figure out what's holding things up. I am
sure it has to do with some left-over code from my previous attempts to
configure Networking in both Linuxconf and in the Mandrake Control Center.
When I try to open Internet Sharing, I get the following message:

Config file content could not be interpreted ???

What does this mean, please?

At this point, I was asked to install certain files from my CD: dhcpd,
iftables, ifchains, etc. But this error message is making it impossible for
me to proceed to this stage of installation and configuration.

What are they talking about, please, and how can I resolve this issue. I am
sure once I get past this first stage, the rest should be a breeze and I
should have Internet Sharing instantly. Just like last time.

Thanks so very much.

[expert] Please compare my Index HTML pages

2001-05-17 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

May I ask those of you who have access to both Linux and Windows if you could
please compare the following URL in several browsers and hopefully suggest a
solution. The URL is:

http://www.websher.net/inx/link.html

The problem is a minor one but annoying and puzzling nonetheless in the
latest Mozilla 0.9 and in the latest Opera 5.0.

Please look only at the table structure of the Index (and at the source).
There are three equal columns of 9 categories each.

Please compare it in Linux using the following browsers: Netscape 4.7, Opera
5, Mozilla 0.9 and Konqueror (in KDE 2.1.1).

Then, in Windows could you please compare this same page in Netscape 4.7 and
in IE 5.x.

In Linux, Netscape 4.7 and Konqueror render the table structure perfectly,
i.e. in perfect symmetry: all three columns begin at the same height and end
at the same height. Same for their placement in each column.

Mozilla 0.9 renders the columns correctly, but the first column is placed
higher than the other two columns.

Finally, Opera 5.0, while rendering the heights correctly, renders the
columns wrongly: the middle and right column appear far to the right of the
left column.

In Windows, the table structure is rendered perfectly by both Netscape 4.x
and IE 5.x.

What could cause this discrepancy, please. Especially in Mozilla 0.9.

Could someone please suggest how I could modify the code in order to remove
this discrepancy? Please be specific.

Thank you so very much.

P. S. Just out of curiosity, does the unusual order of the FTP output below
(as compared with the alphabetical output by bk2site itself) have anything to
do with the issue at hand?

[expert] Dail-up, ADSL and Internet Sharing in LM 8

2001-05-15 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have been trying to reach an expert via the new MandrakeExpert program
inaugurated with LM 8.0. It's a fabulous idea, and I have succeeded in
accessing it a number of times but failed to make the right contact.

I configured my ADSL and Internet Sharing when I first installed my LM 8.0
using the new Wizards in Mandrake Control Center. Setting up ADSL and
Internet Sharing was a breeze (thanks to the wonderful help I received with
configuring my Internet Sharing in LM 7.2 from one of our senior list
members). Doing it in Lm 7.2 was a major operation. In LM 8.0 it's a snap, so
long as everything goes right. Within minutes I had Internet Sharing, which
allowed our second PC computer to connect with the Linux PC. Both computers
were able to access the Internet with the same lightning ADSL speed.

Well, something went wrong. I lost my configuration, and could not get back
online. I tried to use my USR 56k, which has ALWAYS worked in the past (in Lm
7.2 and previous versions) by adding the word noauth (for no authorization)
to /etc/ppp/options. I tried this time but my dial-up would connect and then
instantly be bounced off the line.

I would appreciate the help of a Networking expert and will be glad to make a
modest donation (as part of the MandrakeExpert policy). I would prefer to
talk to someone on the phone (in English) who resides in the United States. I
will be happy to call the expert and obviously cover all phone costs.

This may sound like a major project, but actually it is not. I understand all
the basic concepts and have already configured all of these services before
in LM 8.0. I think the problem has to do with the conflict between using
Linuxconf and the Wizards in Mandrake Control Center. That's where things
started to fall apart. I am sure that the whole business, with us on the
phone, couldn't take more than 15 minutes. I just need to know the precise
procedure for doing this in LM 8.0. I don't want to depend on luck, which is
what happened, to some extent, in my earlier configuration. I have since
reinstalled my LM 8.0, which is operating perfectly. All that's left is
Networking. Meanwhile, I do have ADSL access. But since I lost ADSL access in
my earlier installation (and could never get it to work properly after that),
I would rather not mess with Networking at all until I can discuss this with
a Mandrake expert. My only request is that such an expert familiarize
himself/herself IN DETAIL with the new Mandrake Control Center's Wizards for
configuring Networking. This will make possible a swift resolution of all
Networking issues.

Thank you so much.

[expert] LM 8.0 -- WINBOND/SMSC IO detection error in console

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Occasionally when I boot up to the console (runlevel 3), I see the
following strange message on the screen:

sher07 login: Winbond Super-IO detection now testing ports 3F0, 370,
250, 4E, 2E, SMSC Super -IO detection now testing Ports 2F0, 370.

I then have to type CntRL-C to return to my usual logon screen with the
prompt, so I can log INTO KDE with startx.

This doesn't happen all the time but most of the time. I can't see any
clear pattern as to when it happens and when it doesn't except to say
that I have a similar problem with reboot: sometimes Cnt+Alt+Del (or
shutdown -r now) will result in an automatic reboot. But sometimes it
hangs on Stand by while Linux tries to reboot I can't perceive any
pattern here either. And I don't know if they are connected.

I have been told that I should use some sort of hardware diagnostic tool
to troubleshoot this problem. By the way, I have never had this problem
on any earlier version of Linux-Mandrake.

I would really appreciate help from one of the experts on our list.

Thank you in advance.

[expert] LM 8.0 halt bug -- Fortin's Solution

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friens:

Thanks to the great troubleshooting efforts of Pierre Fortin, we have a
new halt file to replace the /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt file IN CASE YOU
HAVE HAD A PROBLEM SHUTTING DOWN YOUR SYSTEM.

If your shutdown works fine, i.e. without any error messages, with all
OK check marks and ending properly with all filesystems unmounted
(System halted), then skip this. This bug may or may not affect all LM
8.0 users. It was a serious problem for me. So, it may affect your
system, too. My system consists of an AMD K6-2, 400 MHz, 128 megs of RAM
and LM 8.0.

On the other hand, if you have a problem with shutdown, try Fortin's
modified version of halt.

This new halt file also takes into consideration any supermount you
might have in /etc/fstab (usually /mnt/cdrom, /mnt/floppy and /mnt/zip)

The problem seems to have something to do with LM 8.0's /boot partition.
This may involve a kernel bug, according to Fortin.

Before you do anything, rename the halt file that's on your system (just
in case) as follows:

[init.d]#mv halt halt.old

WHERE TO GET THE NEW HALT FILE:

You can get the new halt file at:

http://www.pfortin.com/

(bottom of page)

First, cd to /etc/rc.d/init.d/

To save it, hold the SHIFT key while clicking on the halt link and
choose Save as. The file name will appear in your browser.

After saving it, open up a console or xterm and copy the file as
follows:

[home/user]#cp halt /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt

Now, you MUST change the permissions on the file as follows:

[init.d]#chmod 755 halt

Or, from your home directory:

[user/home]#chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt

(Either way will work)

NOW REBOOT to allow the new changes to take effect. Ignore any error
messages at this point.

After you reboot to the console (runlevel 3) or directly to your GUI
(KDE, Gnome, etc), insert a zip cartridge into your zip drive, a floppy
into your floppy drive and a CD into your cd drive (yes, all
simultaneously). Now, test the new halt script by shutting down your
system with:

#shutdown -h now

The shutdown should be perfect with all green OK and you should be able
to see the new script unmount each partition INDIVIDUALLY:

DEBUG: Unmounting /home OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /zip OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /floppy OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /cdrom OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /boot OK

etc.

The script should end with either just the last line above (Unmounting
/boot OK) or else with

System halted

or with

Power down.

Now, be sure you remove your floppy (if your floppy is, as usual, the
first drive indicated in your BIOS).

Fortin's halt script should also work better with rebooting your
system (Cnt+Alt+Del or shutdown -r now). Automatica rebooting on my
system does not always work. The majority of times it does. But
sometimes it doesn't. That is, on occasion, it hangs on Please stand by
while Linux reboots...

Fortin's halt script doesn't fully solve the reboot issue. However,
when you manually power down and then power up and reboot, you should
have a perfect reboot without any error messages (all green check marks,
no cleanly unmounted, check forced messages which need to be fixed
(with red check marks). Instead, you should see /hda1 clean (hda1 is
my /boot partition).

The same thing happens after a proper shutdown. When you power up, your
bootup should be perfect with all green check marks and hda1 clean (or
whatever your /boot partition is called). That's how you can tell that
the new halt script is working properly.

All the best.

[expert] REBUILT RPM Bermuda Triangle Mystery -- Where is it?

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I just rebuild a Red Hat source rpm on LM 8.0. What I find curious is
that a) I am not sure it was a success and b) if it was a success, where
is the new rebuilt Mandrake RPM file?

Here is the data:

1) RPM --REBUILD BK2SITE.XXX.SRC.RPM. Does the data show this rebuilding
to be a success? If so, please see section 2 below. I know that rebuilt
rpms should be in /usr/src/... (See data for that below). Well, they are
nowhere in sight. I would appreciate if you could take a look below and
help me interpret the data. Actually, interpret it. As an ordinary user,
I can't tell if it is a success.

[expert] REBUILT RPM Mystery -- Solved!

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Todd and friends:

My thanks to Todd Flinders for figuring this out. He was right on
target.

My rebuilt rpm, that is, rebuilt from source rpm, is in
/usr/src/RPM/BUILD!

But it isn't an rpm, but rather requires the usual ./configure, make,
make install installation.

Fabulous!

Thanks again.

Dear friends:

Using Mandrake 8.0 with KDE 2.1.1

For some reason, my screensaver doesn't work. I have set it up for 30
minutes and selected the screensaver in KDE's Control Center, Look n
Feel (the hop screensaver), but instead of getting the screensaver, I
get a black screen. Every time. Never had this problem before. Not even
in LM 7.2 with KDE 2.1.1

Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

[expert] Screensaver won't work -- Solution

2001-05-10 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Klar and friends:

My thanks to a fellow list member for this.

Someone wrote me to tell me how to do it.

You have to activate xscreensaver by typing in the console:

xscreensaver-demo

This activates the screensaver demon. Now select your screensaver. Close
console. Go to KDE Control Center, Look n Feel, screensaver, choose your
screensaver and configure it. Try it by setting the time to 1 minute. It
should work.

[expert] Reboot/shutdown headaches

2001-05-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Having spent a few hours experimenting, here is the latest report on the
Reboot/Shutdown problem. My thanks to everyone who has kindly shared his
expertise with me on this nuisance (I hope it's just a nuisance).

I have an AMD K6-2 400 mghrtz computer with 128 megs of RAM. It is a
dual-boot LM 8.0/Win98. The two operating systems are accessed via Lilo.
Throughout all this reboot/shutdown headache, I have had NO problems
whatsoever -- knock wood! -- with lilo.

My AMD dual-boot is connected by means of Internet Sharing to Toshiba
Win98SE computer. By the way, my hat is off to Mandrake for making
automatic Internet Sharing configuration possible in LM 8.0 (Mandrake
Control Center). That feature alone makes it worth everything.

[Question: Is it necessary for Internet Sharing to enable NFS and NFS
lock in Startup Services? I enabled it, then disabled it, and I don't
see any difference one way or another]

Now to my problem:

There is some sort of snag or bug having to do with reboot and shutdown
in LM 8.0. Sometimes it will shut down or reboot (shutdown -h now)
properly, in which case, during the subsequent bootup everything boots
up perfectly (all green checkmarks), no error messages whatsoever, and I
am told 1) Remounting root file system in read-write mode and 2) hda1
(my boot partition) has mounted cleanly with various statistics about
the /boot partition.

On the other hand, if LM 8.0 has failed to shut down properly or failed
to reboot (necessating manual powering down and manual powering up),
then I still get a Remounting root file system in read-write mode but
I get an error message about hda1, i.e. my boot partition: hda1
uncleanly
mounted, check forced. This quickly gets a RED checkmark indicated that
the problem has been fixed.

In this case of a failed reboot/shutdown, I also get a second line
further down the boot sequence:

Checking filesystem quotas: c\Cannot stat mountpoint: No such file or
directory

I have tried to solve this problem in various ways, thanks to the
suggestions of our list members, but nothing has really solved the basic
conflict. I tried to comment out the boot partition line in /etc/fstab
(# /dev/hda1 /boot). This helped as a palliative by eliminating the
check forced of hda1 during bootup. However, I have been warned that
this is not a good idea, that /boot should always be checked during
bootup for any errors. So, I have uncommented the /boot line in fstab.

[sher@sher07 sher]$ cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda3 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows vfat
user,exec,umask=0,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
/dev/sda /mnt/zip auto user,noauto 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
 [sher@sher07 sher]$

(Same for mtab]
Please note that /boot (by the way, it is 64 meg in size) uses the ext2
file system while / and /home use the new ReiserFS. Is this possibly an
issue? Should /boot have been partitioned using ReiserFS, too. I have
been told by one of our gurus that no, /boot should be ext2 perhaps
because of lilo.

Another suggestion has been to remove supermount from fstab. Well, I
tried this and removed supermount for my zip drive, my floppy and my
cdrom. They work fine the old fashioned way, which in many ways I prefer
anyway. But that has not solved the problem. I have experimented and
once again, sometimes LM 8.0 reboots/shutdowns properly and sometimes it
doesn't.

There is one last thing that needs to be mentioned in this context. I
don't understand this last matter (and hopefully somebody else will),
but it may play a role in all this or be a symptom of the whole problem.
Sometimes, and again I emphasize, sometimes (just as the reboot/shutdown
problem happens just as often as it doesn't), I get the following error
message when I reach the console (I always boot up to runlevel 3):

sher07 login: Winbond Super-IO detection now testing ports 3F0, 370,
250, 4E, 2E, SMSC Super -IO detection now testing Ports 2F0, 370.

I then have to type CntRL-C to return to my usual logon screen with the
prompt, so I can log INTO KDE with startx.

What is all this about, please? I have noticed that when I turn off the
Toshiba win98, the Winbond and SMSC Super-IO detection error disappears.
Any idea on how to turn off this nuisance altogether. Or is this related
to my reboot/shutdown problem?

Well, that's it. Looking forward to hearing from those who are more
intimately familiar with both Linux and LM 8.0.

Thanks so much in advance.

Benjamin

P. S. Please remember to keep it simple. Thanks.

[expert] Lilo Dual-Boot Configuration Trick -- Instructions

2001-05-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Here is a lilo trick taught me by one of our premier gurus.

PROBLEM:

How do you configure lilo to handle a dual-boot Linux/Windows system,
where Windows is NOT on the first drive (hda) but on the second or third
(hdb or hdc). In my case, I have a system with Linux installed on hda
and hdb and Windows installed on hdc. How to configure it without
physically switching the Linux hda and the Windows hdc disks. In fact, I
recently tried to do this, and it failed.

SOLUTION:

Unbelievably simple, that is, if you are a Linux master like Jose M.
Sanchez:

Just open the lilo.conf file in a text editor and change 0 X 81, 81 X 0
to 0 X 82, 82 X 0.

Here is my lilo.conf file:

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ cat /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
other=/dev/fd0
label=floppy
unsafe
other=/dev/hdc1
label=Win98
table=/dev/hdc
 map-drive = 0x80
to = 0x82
 map-drive = 0x82
to = 0x80
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda7
append=
read-only

Very ingenious, but it works -- EVERY TIME. It's a way of fooling Linux
into thinking that Windows is on hda instead of really being on hdc.

Hope this helps those of you who have this problem.

Yours,

Benjamin

[expert] LM 8.0 -- Forced shutdown and reboot

2001-05-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

[Using Lm 8.0]

Would appreciate your help with the following problem:

Sometimes LM 8.0 will reboot properly and sometimes it won't. And
sometimes it will shutdown properly and sometimes it won't. When it
doesn't, Linux freezes at Please wait while Linux reboots or at the
very end of the shutdown -h now sequence at unmounting file systems
instead of System halted or Power down. These two problems may be
connected. This is more than just a nuisance. When LM 8.0 does not
reboot or shut down properly, it goes through its not clearly
unmounted, check forced routine. Of course, with ReiserFS, this now
takes only a second instead of 10 minutes. But, still, it feels me with
anxiety and worry that there is something really wrong.

NOTE:

Whenever I log on, I get the following strange message in the console:

sher07 login: Winbond Super-IO detection now testing ports 3F0, 370,
250, 4E,
2E, SMSC Super -IO detection now testing Ports 2F0, 370.

I then have to type CntRL-C to return to my usual logon screen with the
prompt, so I can log INTO KDE with startx.

Any idea if this has anything to do with the reboot and shutdown
problem? Could all of these issues be related in some way?

Thanks so much.

[expert] Reboot/shutdown freeze error

2001-05-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Looks like I've solved the Winbod Detection logon error message by
shutting down certain services in Startup Services (#ntsysv). When I
reboot now, LM 8.0 boots up correctly and properly to my logon screen in
the console with the prompt waiting for me.

The last serious problem has to do with the reboot/shutdown problem.
Sometimes, LM 8.0 reboots correctly and sometimes it doesn't. Same for
shutdown. Sometimes, it shuts down properly, more often bootdown stops
at: Unmounting file systems.

During bootup, when LM 8.0 reboots properly, there are no error
messages, LM 8.0 detects eth0 and eth1, the root files systems mount
properly (NO uncleanly unmounted, check forced). But when LM 8.0
freezes during reboot or shutdown, I get an uncleanly unmounted, check
forced error message (with red OK check mark) and the following error
message shortly thereafter:

Checking filesystem quotes: c\Cannot stat mountpoint: No such file or
directory.

(the word above is stat, not start).

I would appreciate any help or suggestions on this. Please remember that
I am an ordinary user. But I am doing my best.

Thanks so much.

[expert] Aurora horror -:)

2001-05-04 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Well, I just installed LM 8.0. I have a number of problems. And I'll try
to deal with them one at a time.

Let me begin with probably the least important of them, a merely
cosmetic matter, namely Aurora. I am not happy with the graphical boot
that comes by default with LM 8.0. I much prefer the old Aurora that
came with LM 7.2. I also notice that there 5 or 6 Aurora files on my LM
8.0 CD. Could someone please explain this situation and what these other
files are for and how to replace the current Aurora with either the
earlier Lm 7.2 Aurora or any of the other Auroras. Is it simply a matter
of uninstalling (rpm -e) the current Aurora and installing a new one (or
the old LM 7.2 Aurora)? And, by the way, which is the LM 7.2 Aurora?

My reasons for this are entirely cosmetic, but appearances can make a
difference.

Thank you so much.

[expert] Urgent! Xserver broken -- Help!

2001-04-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I seem to have hit a minor snag, but I have no idea how to get out it. I
would really appreciate your help.

I am using LM 7.2 with KDE 2.1.1.

I tried to download Ximiam Gnome 1.4 (which allows for installation on
LM 7.2).

After downloading and configuration, I encountered a host of
installation errors (after the install process was finished). So, I
decided to go back to Gnome 1.2. I reinstalled the six Gnome files that
I had to UNinstall prior to trying to install Ximiam 1.4. When doing a

rpm -qa | grep gnome

I see that all my old Gnome 1.2 files are there.

When doing

rpm -qa | grep kde

I see that all my KDE 2.1.1mkd files are there.

After rebuilding my rpm database (#rpm --rebuilddb) and updating my
menus (update-menus -v), both of which were successful and rebooting, I
logged into KDE 2.1.1 without a hitch.

But something has since gone wrong, and I can't figure it out. I tried
to remove my .Xauthority file in my home directory and allow a new
.Xauthority to be created. Well, a new .Xauthority file was created but
I still cannot log into X (any X gui, I have tried startx, startx KDE,
startx Gnome, startxfce, all to no avail. Nothing seems to work). I am
stuck forever in the console.

By the way, all of the files in my home directory (ls -la | more) show
belong to me (sher) rather than root, including .Xauthority.

Below is the error message I get in the console every time I try to log
into KDE with startx (or any other command for any other gui):

BEGIN

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Error: Bad length in Symbols

   Output file /var/tmp/server-0.xkm removed.

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the Xserver

failed to set default font path 'Unix/:-1'

Fatal server error:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

END

Would really appreciate your help. I just don't understand enough of
what's going on to fix this.

[expert] Xserver broken -- partition full

Dear friends:

My thanks to Craig Sprout for this hint. I hope this leads to a
solution.

I checked my partitions (df) and, lo and behold, discovered that my main
partition (/) is absolutely full (0 bytes left and 100% of disk space
used).

This doesn't make any sense to me. This may have something to do with my
failed attempt to install Ximiam Gnome 1.4 a day or so ago, which ended
with a long list of errors at the very end of installation and forced me
to cancel the whole thing.

By the way, all of my XFree86 files are versions 4.03, including my
Xfree86-xfs file. Is this correct? And I use Xfree86-SVGA 3.3.6 as my
default Xserver with my Nvidia card. Xfree86 4.0.3 doesn't work on my
computer.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Dear friends:

I recently installed the RealPlayer 8 .bin version for Linux. I also
installed all the plugins and mimetypes (sh mimetypes.sh and sh

problems with RealPlayer 8. The broadband screen is half the size it

files do not work or do not work properly. Obviously, the RealPlayer
8 rpm won't work on LM72.

This is ironic. I used to have RealPlayer 7. I foolishly deleted it from
my web site storage place when I installed RealPlayer 8.

The RH6 RPMS for Mozilla 0.8.1 have just been released. I just installed

installed PERFECTLY, without any error messages, and Mozilla 0.8.1 is so
far working very, very well. So, for us LM72 users, at least until LM
8.0 comes out, this version of Mozilla may be the best and safest. The
Texstar i586 rpms (based on the Cooker i586 version) yield the infamous
"runtime mismatch, so leaking context" error message, which, as it

Re: [expert] Mozilla 0.8.1 for LM72 error messages

2001-04-10 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Mark:

Rebuilding an src.rpm package is the easiest thing in the world. Download the
src.rpm package, then, as root , type in xterm:

#rpm --rebuild mozilla-0.8.1.src.rpm

(or whatever the name of the file). Make sure the file ends in "src.rpm", not
"rpm." You can also add the target build for your system:

rpm --rebuild mozilla-0.8.1.src.rpm --target=i586

You should replace "i586" by whatever your system demands. Remember that AMD
K6 systems are really i586, NOT i686 as they claim.

You can try it first without the target setting and, if necessary, try it
again with the target setting.

There is NOTHING else to be done. Just wait. It could take an hour or two or
three or many more depending on what you are rebuilding, on how big the files
is. If all goes well, your rebuilding will end with a return to the prompt
and with NO error messages. You then go to /usr/src/ to find your RPM file,
that is, the rpm file you just built for your own system. All such rebuilt
rpms are auotomatically stored in:

[sher@sher07 sher]$ cd /usr/src/RPM/RPMS
[sher@sher07 RPMS]$ ls
i386/ i486/ i586/ i686/ k6/ noarch/

[expert] Mozilla update confusion

2001-04-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Just take a look! Linux is confused by the Mozilla version numbers. It thinks
that mozilla-0.8-2 (i.e. 0.8, the version released on Feb. 17) is newer than
mozilla-0.8.1 (the version recently issued on March 26). How is this
possible. A human being might slip but how could a machine?

Any explanation?

[root@sher07 mozilla]# rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm
package mozilla-0.8-2 (which is newer than mozilla-0.8.1-2mdk) is already
installed
package mozilla-mail-0.8-2 (which is newer than mozilla-mail-0.8.1-2mdk) is
already installed
package mozilla-psm-0.8-2 (which is newer than mozilla-psm-0.8.1-2mdk) is
already installed
[root@sher07 mozilla]# rm mozilla-devel-0.8.1-2mdk.i586.rpm
rm: remove `mozilla-devel-0.8.1-2mdk.i586.rpm'?
[root@sher07 mozilla]# rm mozilla-irc-0.8.1-2mdk.i586.rpm
rm: remove `mozilla-irc-0.8.1-2mdk.i586.rpm'?

This, however, does not explain the "runtime mismatch, so leaking context"
error message you get when installing mozilla 0.8.1 because I had uninstalled
version 0.8 and deleted all files (including hidden files and configuration
files) before installing the new 0.8.1 version.

Benjamin

Re: [expert] upgrade RPM 3 to 4 -- Where?

2001-04-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Mark:

I tend to agree with you. I thought I would raise the question, anyway. I
guess for those who stay with LM72, they can still always install RH 6.2
versions of programs that are not available in LM72 rpm form. RH6.2 is still
used everywhere, and for that reason Red Hat continues to produce rpms for
RH6 as well as RH7. For instance, Mozilla 0.8.1 should appear soon on the
Mozilla download page in both RH6 and RH7 rpm format.

Thanks so much.

Benjamin

If you're running a 7.2 system I would really "strongly" advise against
using any other version of RPM other then version 3. the one that you have
on there already. you REALLY don't want the headaches of trying to convert
from RPM version 3.x.x to version 4. There's an old saying my grandfather
used to say to me when I was very small. "If it ain't broke boy...don't

discovered that when I tried to use my True Type fonts (added from Windows
via DrakConf/Fonts), the print fonts were really tiny, barely legible and
very hard on the eyes.

Thanks to a tip from Andrew, I decided to experiment by using only Type 1
fonts. Bottom line: If you set the font in Kmail's Settings, Configuration,
Appearance, Fonts to a font like Adobe helvetica, size 18, regular for
"messaage body" (as opposed to "message list," etc.), you will get a
moderately sized, readable printed text that is Adobe helvetica. The key
seems to be to find the font that works with your printer in Kmail. The
results is pleasant and acceptable. Hopefully, in the future Kmail will be
able to do more, but this is good enough for the time being.

However, when clicking on the printer icon in the toolbar, you should also
change the letter size to "letter" (which is our American 11 x 8.5 standard
size letter). KDE has set the default to A4, which is the European standard.
Otherwise, you'll have serious problems printing, paper jamming, missing
text, etc.

OK, this is not quite as good as I would like it, but it is good enough for
the time being.

Re: [expert] Install/Uninstall Mozilla source tarball

2001-04-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Question:

If I build the Mozilla tarball from the source tarball at mozilla, can I then
uninstall it? Or if I want to upgrade later, can I do that?

How do you UNINSTALL a mozilla tarball that you built from the source
tarball, gunzip or bzip file?

Thank you so much.

[expert] RH 6 src.rpm for Mozilla 0.8.1 -- URL!

2001-04-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

If you would like to download the Red Hat 6 src.rpm file for the recent
Mozilla 0.8.1 of March 26 (compatible with LM72), go to:

http://people.redhat.com/blizzard/software/RH6/SRPMS/

The exact name of the file is:

mozilla-0.8.1-1.src.rpm 06-Apr-2001 02:10 29.9M

This will allow you to rebuild the src.rpm as your own full suite of mozilla
files (mozilla, mozilla-psm, mozilla-mail, mozilla-developer). If you have an
AMD K6-2 as I do, you will be able to rebuild the RH file as i586 files. I
have been told that performance should dramatically improve and you should (I
hope) have no error messages.

I mention this partly because, in spite of assurance to the contrary, the
Texstar rpm version of mozilla 0.8.1 (rebuilt from the Cooker directory,
which uses rpm version 4) yielded the error messages: runtime mismatch, so
leaking context. I am not a programmer, just an ordinary user, but when I
tried to use the Texstar mozilla 0.8.1, it repeatedly crashed or froze. I was
very unhappy and went right back to mozilla 0.8 (also available on the
Texstar site -- and the 0.8 version worked very well).

You might wish to bookmark the Red Hat site for future versions of Mozilla,
especially the long-awaited upcoming recommended beta version .9 and, then,
of course, version 1.0.

Yours,

Benjamin

[expert] RH6 Mozilla src.rpm fails

2001-04-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I must sadly report that my attempt to rebuild the RH6 src.rpm of mozilla
0.8.1 has failed. Lots of error messages have caused the rebuilding to abort.

My apologies. Perhaps you might have better luck on your systems. Maybe it
has something to do with my AMD K6-2 (really a i586, NOT an i686) or maybe
some hidden incompatibility between the RH6 src.rpm and LM7.2 .

Re: [expert] Mozilla 0.8.1 for LM72 error messages

2001-04-08 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Tom and friends:

I tried to rebuild the Cooker versions of Mozilla but still got the same
error messages because of the rpm issue.

By the way, my AMD K6-2 400 is really a i586, not an i686. There was a
discussion of this on our list recently, and you may recall Jose M. Sanchez
informed opinion that the AMD K6-2 is really a i586, NOT, as AMD's marketing
claims, a 686.

The Texstar rpms are i586 and I hope they were in fact rebuilt for LM72 using
rpm version 3.0, not the 4.0 rpm version used in building Cooker/LM-8. That's
the issue. If Texstar's i586 rpms are OK for LM72 why am I getting the
"runtime mismatch" and the "leaking context" errors? And what in the world
does this mean? Mozilla does install correctly with 50 hashes but afterwords,
before returning to the prompt, it give you these two error messages. What
does this mean?

Thanks so very much.

Dear Kompukit:

You can do

#rpm --rebuilddb

and

#update-menus -v

both in KDE"s konsole (or any xterm) or you can log out of KDE into the
console, and do it there. If you have chosen to boot up to KDE directly
(runlevel 5, i.e. graphically), then you should do this in KDE's xterm, then
reboot. If you boot up to the console first (runlevel 3), then type startx to

and log back in or, to play it safe, just reboot.

[expert] Kmail print fonts -- too small!!!

2001-04-08 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I like Kmail a lot, but, as is often the case, a simple feature or lack of
it, can be an insurmountable obstacle. And, in this case, it may be that I am
just missing something.

I have been learning how to configure Kmail (and KDE 2.1.1 in general).
Amazing what you can do. For example, I had no idea you can change the fonts
in KDE, almost anywhere. No need to accept the font sizes or typefaces
anywhere. You can change them in Control Center, Look Feel, Fonts, etc.

I learned to change the SCREEN fonts in Kmail receive and send messages. Very
pleased.

However, no matter what I do, I find it impossible to change the PRINT fonts
in Kmail. I have two "locally connected" printers listed under Kmail, Print
(Okipage 10e, my printer) and lp printer. Using other one produces a printed
page in tiny font sizes, absolutely unacceptably tiny. You can barely read
them. On the other hand, the same printer produces wonderful print quality
and font sizes in Netscape Messenger.

Am I missing something? Surely, there must be an answer to this in Kmail.

Thank you so kindly.

[expert] Mozilla 0.8.1 error messages -- Explained

2001-04-08 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

The following is a letter from Texstar concerning the "runtime mismatch, so
leaking context!" error message you get when installing Mozilla 0.8.1 on LM72
( i.e. installing the special Texstar version for LM72 available from Texstar
at:

http://texstar.dyn.dhs.org

First, let me add Texstar's explanation of how he built these rpms:

"The Mozilla rpms have been updated to the most recent version. I have been
using it with no problems the past few days. All rpms are recompiled from the
originals at Mandrake. I just download the source , install the source rpm
and type rpm -ba --target=i586 rpmspecnname.spec. This builds a new rpm based
on my current setup which is Linux Mandrake 7.2, Rpm 3.0 and glibc 2.1. "

Below is Texstar's explanation for the "runtime mismatch, so leaking context"
error message. I would appreciate if one of our experts could explain just
what this is all about and what we should do about it. Looks very cryptic to
me as a newbie.

Dear Ken:

Thanks so much for writing. I appreciate it.

I can't help but wonder if we are talking about the same thing.

There is no Look n Feel category in Kmail, Settings, Configuration.
That's in KDE Control Center, which controls display fonts.

I can and have changed the DISPLAY fonts in Kmail, both for receiving
and sending mail, but can I change the PRINT fonts? The print font
doesn't change and is tiny and hard to read. Is there a way to change
the print font in Kmail?

Thanks so much.

[expert] Mozilla .8 -- search fonts

2001-04-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have started using Mozilla 0.8 as my default browser (and am looking
forward to 0.8.1). I am especially pleased with the control over the size of
the fonts.

However, I have two questions:

1) The much vaunted Search function of Mozilla seems to have turned to ashes:
Clicking on Search does NOT bring up the Google search engine, as it clearly
should according to my Preferences, Navigator, Internet Search, selection
(just checked again to be sure: it says: Google). Instead, I am presented
with Netscape.com's portal. Same things happens in Netscape 4.76. But in the
old 4.76 if you click on Edit, Find on the Internet often enough, you WILL
get the Google box. But in Mozilla 0.8, you won't see it at all. So, who
needs the toolbar, then. Instead, I recommend doing what I have done: uncheck
the toolbar altogether (including My Sidebar), everything except the menu, go
to http://www.google.com, then make a bookmark, in Edit Bookmarks, if
necessary, move your Google bookmark way up to the top of the bookmark list,
and now, if you want to REALLY search the Internet, just open your Bookmarks
(thank God it is listed as a menu itself, and click on Google and there you
are in an instant. Of course, you could select any search engine you wish.

What a great waste of resources. A great Search feature with My Sidebar
really being useful for this purpose,-- and all ruined by a mercenary,
self-destructive shoot-oneself-in-the-foot corporate reptile, i.e.
AOL/Netscape. If I am wrong, if I have missed something, my apologies to
Mozilla and AOL/Netscape. Please correct me if I am wrong. But if I am right,
then it's all very sad.

2) No less sad is the buggy Preferences box (Edit, Preferences). Ever since
Mozilla .7, I have found it impossible to replace the default adobe fonts
(which are, admittedly very good) with my Windows True Type fonts (I have a
dual-boot system). I had NO problem with this in Netscape, and I have been
able, albeit with some effort, to configure the Preferences in Mozilla .8
(you have to do it one option at a time), i.e. everything EXCEPT the fonts.
Every single time that I have tried to do this, Mozilla crashes. And I have
tried every version of Mozilla available, rpm, tarball, Full Install, etc.
etc., every build available on the Mozilla download page. Has anyone else had
this problem? If so, how can this be solved? Is there a workaround, perhaps a
manual workaround. If so, please share this secret with me, and, please be
easy on me, I am just an ordinary user and need precise instructions. Yet,
the preferences file in ~/.mozilla clearly says: "Do not edit this generated
file!" So what is a Mozilla user to do?

Thank you very kindly.

[expert] KDE 2.1.1 + Mozilla 0.8.1 for LM72

Dear friends:

Just wanted to pass on the good news that KDE 2.1.1 (the upgrade from KDE
2.1) is now available in i586 rpm format from:

All of these i586 rpms (just issued on April 7) have been built from the

[expert] WARNING: Forget KDE 2.1.1 from Texstar!

2001-04-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

My deep apologies. I assumed that the KDE 2.1.1 files (and the Mozilla 0.8.1
files) at Texstar (http://texstar.dyn.dhs.org), which claims be an
exclusively LM72 rpm site, would have produced rpms that work with LM72's rpm
version 3.0 and that they would also supply rpms for all dependencies.

That's why I didn't even bother to test their KDE 2.1.1 before making my
announcement. Furthermore, while their Mozilla 0.8 (based on the Feb. 17,
2001 version) installs and works perfectly (except for Mozilla's fonts bug in
Preferences), their Mozilla 0.8.1 installs with two major error messages,
neither of which I understand:

1) runtime mismatch
2) leaking context

I've therefore aborted installation of both KDE 2.1.1 and Mozilla 0.8.1.

Perhaps Texstar is not aware of the rpm incompatibility issue (LM72 uses rpm
version 3, LM-8, i.e. Cooker, uses rpm version 4).

My apologies again.

Benjamin

[expert] KDE 2.1.1 for LM72 -- Success After All!

2001-04-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Well, looks like I was wrong again. But this time it's a pleasant surprise.

Let's go back to the KDE 2.1.1 upgrade for LM72 site from Texstar at:

http://texstar.dyn.dhs.org

This site has i586 rpms for LM72 that will allow you to upgrade your current
KDE to the final version 2.1.1

I just sucessfully upgraded my KDE 2.1 to KDE 2.1.1 using the instructions
and files at Texstar. See my instructions and explanation below.

All of these i586 rpms (just issued on April 7) have been built from the
Cooker site and made available on LM72 (i.e. using our version 3.0 rpm
instead of the version 4 rpm required for Cooker's i586 rpms.

Another big news item: The new Mozilla 0.8.1 files have also just been made
available as i586 rpms for LM72.

But please remember: these are UNsupported rpms. They are NOT officially
supported by Mandrake.

INSTRUCTIONS:

I'll take the blame for my share of the responsiblity for misleading
everybody earlier (not once but twice) but the author of Texstar should take
his share of the blame, too.

When you arrive at Texstar, AVOID any links on the main screen (FTP or HTTP
links, etc.). That was my mistake earlier. This is NOT the entrance to the
KDE 2.1.1 files.

Instead, look at the top left corner of the screen. You will see a penguin
(that is NOT a link but should be one). Right below it you will find the link
you want: Pclinuxonline. As you can see, it is underlined. Click on it.

Now look for the section pertaining to KDE 2.1.1 for LM72.

First, download the two freetype2 files

freetype2-2.0.2-1mdk.i586.rpm freetype2-devel-2.0.2-1mdk.i586.rpm

and install them first. Then create a KDE-2.1.1 directory and download all
the files INDIVIDUALLY. I don't think there is any other way. Here is what my

first install KDE 2.0 or KDE 2.01 in order to upgrade to KDE 2.1.1.

Installation was a success. All 53 files returned 50 hashes each. There was
one error message about a certain font but it said: "skipping." so I am sure
everything installed OK.

After installation, exit KDE, then in the console do a:

#rpm --rebuilddb (rebuilding the database)

and

#update-menus -v

Then reboot and you've got KDE 2.1.1. You can check the Control Center to see
the new version number.

My thanks to everyone who helped. Hope I have been of help to others,
especially to other newbies like myself.

[expert] Mozilla 0.8.1 for LM72 error messages

2001-04-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

As I reported earlier, you can get Mozilla 0.8.1 (the latest March 26, 2001)
version for LM72 (not for Cooker or LM8.0 directly from Texstar at:

http://texstar.dyn.dhs.org

I had no problem installing the Mozilla file itself. It installed with 50
perfect hashes. But I did get two error messages:

1) runtime mismatch

2) leaking context

Could one of the gurus on our list please explain to us newbies what this is
all about and whether it would be safe to use this version of Mozilla or
whether it would be safer to use Mozilla 0.8 (from Feb. 17, 2001), also
available, by the way, from the same site for LM72.

Thank you so very much.

Benjamin

[expert] Relinking in Galeon/Mozilla -- how?

2001-04-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

After experimenting with the failed dependencies of Galeon 10.2 and
Mozilla 0.8.1. for Mandrake, I have finally settled on
galeon-0.8.1-rh6_2, which is a) a i386 file, NOT a i586 file, b) is a
Red Hat i386 file and c) most strangely, is to be found in
Mandrake-devel/unsupported/7.2/i586 (!). A Red Hat 386 file right in the
middle of nothing but i586 Mandrake files.

Note: This version of Galeon (0.8.1) is dated March 1 and is based on
Mozilla 0.8 (dated Feb 17, 2001), not on the latest Mozilla 0.8.1 (dated
March 26, 2001). That's fine. By the way, I did not find a src.rpm file
under SRPMS in the corresponding directory.

Well, that doesn't bother me, folks. Just mentioning this as background
for my problem.

PROBLEM:

I installed Mozilla 0.8 (a 586 file, which I rebuilt from the RH 6.2
source rpm). No problem. I then installed Galeon 8.1 (a Galeon version
compatible with
Mozilla 0.8). The installation went very well. All plugins and bookmarks
were transferred automatically. However, during the install, Galeon
issued the following error message. It looks pretty harmless, but I
don't really know how to carry out the instructions. Meanwhile, Galeon
keeps crashing when I try to surf. Is the crashing related to the error
message below?

[sher@sher07 sher]$ galeon
/usr/bin/galeon-bin: Symbol `__vt_28nsCreateInstanceByContractID' has
different size in shared object, consider re-linking
/usr/bin/galeon-bin: Symbol `__vt_16nsQueryInterface' has different size
in shared object, consider re-linking

Thanks so much. I like Galeon, but if it keeps crashing, I'll never get
a chance to find out what it can or can't do. Hope to hear from a Galeon
fan.

[expert] Installing 586 over 386?

2001-04-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

A quick question:

If you are installing a i586 file over an i386 file (all things being
otherwise identical, including distro, etc.) should you first uninstall
the i386 and then install the i586 or is this automatically taken care
of by the --Uhv option, just as it when installing higher versions of
programs on top of each other (e.g. Mozilla .8 over Mozilla .7)? Are we
talking about the same UNINSTALL/INSTALL process in -Uvh or are we
talking about apples and oranges?

Thank you so much.

Re: [expert] Installing 586 over 386?

2001-04-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Tom:

Thanks so very much for the clarification. And thanks a million for the
instructions on installing RealPlayer8 with plugins and mimetypes.
That's what I did -- thanks to you. The other option, that of adding the
plugins and mimetypes MANUALLY, did not please me at all. So, your
solution was powerful, simple and on target. Thanks again.
