I have supermount disabled on my box, but leave it enabled on any
other install I do. I am reasonably happy with this arrangement.
But, supermount is there for a reason. So, Vincent, could you

some good reasons for doing what I do, or a good reason to

You could disable supermount. supermount -i disable.

I believe it's because urpmi is trying to read the cdrom because you have
sources defined (your install CDs) that use it. If you disable supermount,
you shouldn't have this problem (I religiously disable supermount).

Re: [expert] Trish's further adventures with sound

2003-09-11 Thread Brian Schroeder
Hi Trish,

I have a sound card that played midis perfectly in mdk 7.2, but never
since. It still does in Windows, on the rare times I use it.
When I want to play midis in linux now, I use Timidity. This has both
a command line interface, and gui interfaces available. TImidity translates
the midi on the computer, so, so long as you also have the patches
installed, you will more-than-likely get better sound than if the sound
card had done it all.

Hi all,

Now that I've got alsa working with my CD, I've gone off to search ways to
get
MIDI working. I have a sneaking fondness for playmidi and have quite a
collection of MIDI files; I'd hate to have to give 'em up!

Alas! although I've progressed past utter silence and incomprehension from
various apps, I've managed to lock the computer up *hard*, twice!
/dev/sound has a couple of likely-looking devices: midi1 and dmmidi1, and
sequencer and sequencer1. these are linked to by the standard devices.
However, if I use either midi1 or sequencer as the output device, I get
lockup. I haven't dared try the others yet!
lsmod shows in the relevant part:

snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore 6276 0 [snd]

and, based on stuff I found on the alsa wiki, /etc/modules.conf reads:

probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd

alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-1-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss
So: does anyone have any ideas of things I could try? Have I maybe loaded
too
many things? Other than this, alsa is working jest *fine*.

Hi Folks,

Anyone could tell me what the main differences are between net-snmp and
ucd-snmp ?
I'm wondering why the php-package do require the net-snmp-mib package ?
I had written quite some apps using the ucd-snmp package - which are all
broken now. Seems the SNMP Extensions from net-snmp are different from the
ucd-snmp which where in the php-4.0.x version.
Anyway - would be nice to know what is different, advantages/disadvantages
on
all apps - so I can decide if I want to port the code to net-snmp or not.

Thx Cheers

[expert] OT: Backing up Windows (Fat32 and NTFS) Partitions

2003-07-31 Thread Brian Schroeder
I have Win2k, using both fat and ntfs partitions, on my system - of
which the main OS is mdk9.1.
It seems to me that I should be able to get a perfectly valid, complete
and fully restorable backup of my windows environment simply by using
dd or tar from linux.
Has anyone had any experience doing this?
Is the state of the NTFS driver up to it?
Is there anything I am missing with this scenario?

Yep. That's done the trick. It works properly now. Thanks for your help.

I have now run into another problem: full-screen graphics programs (in
particular, games) only display the top half of the screen. It may be
caused
by something else, though. I haven't spent any time debugging it yet.

Brian.

From: Kelley Terry [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is a very old bug with XFree86 and S3 Trio3d cards. It was reported
on the XFree86 mailing lists over a year ago. With the virtual framebuffer
activated the left half or so of the screen looks normal but the right half
is repeated vertical strips of some of the left part of the screen. I just
got through fixing this problem with my 9.1 install. If this is your
problem
(It sounded like it from the original description of it), then the simplest
work around that I've found is not to use the virtual framebuffer at all.
When booting some lines with vga= in it the virtual framebuffer is
activated. From then on your display will be unusable with the XFree86
driver until you reboot without the framebuffer. I just now (less than an
hour ago) reinstalled lilo with the framebuffer and repeated this bug. I
have now set the linux-nonfb mode as my default boot and it eliminates this
bug.

I've been wondering about that. If Mandrakesoft don't make point releases,
what is
the meaning of their version numbers? Why have, for example, 9.2?

From: Miark [EMAIL PROTECTED]

9.2 is _not_ a point release in the common sense of the word because
Mandrakesoft
does not, in fact, make them. 9.2 will have the latest and greatest of
everything
available; point being you can expect as many bugs in this release as with
any
other release.

I have managed to get past the problem by selecting the vesa driver, but

reported the same problem on the XFree86 list with 4.2.1, so it looks like

Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I just set up 9.1 a couple nights
ago with a few problems. Anyway, the problem you have is the same one I've
had each time I use the virtual framebuffer. I don't know if booting using
the non framebuffer mode will work but I'd give that a try first. If that
works then set that as your default boot. The way that I've always done it
is to edit /etc/lilo.conf to remove every line with vga= in it, then run
lilo again. Of course you'll need to su to root to edit lilo.conf and run
lilo. Let me know what happens. LOL

I've got an Apache server running on a Windows XP, and everything works ok,
but now i'm trying to configure it to run under Linux. The problem is that
the page links do not redirect to the localhost but to the URL:

Under XP:
http://localhost/ all the links in the page refer to localhost.
Under Linux:
http://localhost/ then all the links in the page refer to
http://www.elacuariodeaguadulce.com wich is the Internet URL. Really i
don't know why the Apache server redirects it to the URL instead of the
localhost.

The server is Apache, running PHP and MySQL.

Does anybody knows it? (I don't know if the question is clear enought)

Thanks in advance,

[expert] S3 Trio 3D and XFree86 4.3

2003-06-12 Thread Brian Schroeder
There was a thread recently about running XFree 4.3 on the S3 Trio 3D, so
I'm hoping one of those people may be able to help me get it working.
I've got 2 boxes I am trying to configure with this chip in, and 2 very
different
monitors - and both produce the same problems. I would really like to get
this working because of the things that don't work with the XFree 3.3 driver
-
including the RENDER extenstion problem. This is Mandrake 9.1, although
I have seen some of the same problems in 9.0.

In XFdrake, I have selected the XFree 4 S3virge driver, since the XFree86
site says this is the appropriate one. I then select my monitor,
resolution,
etc.
Then, when I start X it gives a rather strange result: The left 2 thirds of
the
screen is perfect. The right third is a repeat of part of the left section.
 The
right third of that third does the same thing - and so on for a few more
times.

In other words, it isn't really usable.

Using the left 2 thirds of the screen, however, I have demonstrated to my
satisfaction that the problems I experienced with XFree 3 do NOT appear
in XFree 4. So I would really like to get it working properly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brian.

Thanks for the reply, Jack.

This is in my son's computer (I am trying to indoctrinate him into linux

I added a Voodoo 2 3D accellerator (bought on ebay). It works in Windows,
but I haven't been able to get Linux (mdk 9.0 and 9.1) to use it. I don't
know if
the Voodoo3 is the same, but this card daisy-chains off of the main graphics
output and only handles the 3D stuff.

My problem may be related to the fact that I haven't been able to get
XFree86
version 4 to properly handle the S3 Trio, and have to use 3.3.

We have a wierd printer problem also. Sometime overnight, every

Re: [expert] Mandrake RPM updates

2003-02-10 Thread Brian Schroeder
This is probably a difficult ask. But what I would like to see
is a longer time between versions (eg. 12+ months) for the regular
desktop edition, and a simple, reliable method for updating
packages in the meantime for those who want to (for all those
things that don't qualify for Mandrake's Update facility).

I often grab things from cooker - generally source RPMs - to
install myself. But as time goes by, depencancy issues and library
incompatibilities increase until I give up and simply wait for the
next Mandrake upgrade. It would be nice if this was different.

I'm not really expecting all this to happen, but at least I have
got it off my chest.

more. I'm not 100% sure on this yet (not my call).

I understand doing updates yourself is a bore and PITA (oh boy do I
know!), and reinstalling a server every 18mos is also a nuisance.
Corporate Server will alleviate this. It will have 12-18mos between
versions, so will be a much slower pace than the main distrib (Mandrake
Linux), and should certainly meet your needs.

There is a PR on the mandrakesoft.com website about it; I don't have
the URL handy at the moment.

Re: [expert] Corrupted RPM database (need help)

2002-12-30 Thread Brian Schroeder
This, or something like it IS in the archives - somewhere. (I have
had problems in the past finding things in the archives too.) I had
exactly the same problem myself a while back, and have it fixed now.

Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what I did, or what the helpful
messages were, but it may have been the following:

1) kill ALL processes that have anything to do with rpm
2) rm /var/lib/rpm/__*
  (that is _ twice - usually __db.001 and __db.002)
3) rpm --rebuilddb

That may fix it for you. I did find out what was causing this, but
I can't remember that one either. I hope I made a note somewhere!

I know this has come up before, but I can't seem to find
the solution in the archives (other than re-installing).

My RPM database seems to have gotten corrupted.
If I do: rpm -qa

it hangs after listing most (but not all) of my installed packages.

I tried to do: rpm --rebuilddb

but this seems to go into an infinite loop. It will begin
rebuilding in the /var/lib directory but after some time the
load average jumps up one unit. After some more time it jumps
up another unit (to three) and the files in the re-build directory
just keep getting overwritten.

Is there any way to reconstruct the database? This system has a great
deal of out-of-distribution software (like win4lin, scilab, selected
cooker stuff, nvidia drivers, sun java rpms, c.) which would take
hours to re-install.

All was well a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've done one or two
updates from the Mandrake update site. I have no idea how the DB got
corrupted.

System: Mdk 9.0 will all applicable updates as of 27th Dec 2002.
rpm -q rpm: rpm-4.0.4-19mdk

Thanks in advance.
I hope someone here can save my bacon!

2002-12-18 Thread Brian Schroeder
(Sorry if you've seen this before. I asked about this a few days
ago, but didn't see my message on the list, or any replies.)

I am trying to configure a PII system that has an S3 Trio3D graphics
chip, and an added Voodoo2 3dfx card. According to the documentation,
these are both supported by Xfree 4.2.1, though not by earlier XFree 4
versions. Mandrake 9 only offers XFree 3.3.6, though, and doesn't
even give me the option to choose version 4 (although 4.2.1 is the
version that comes with MDK9.0).

I have spent some time on google, but have not really found what I
need.

How can I force it to use XFree 4.2.1? And how can I configure it
to use the graphics acceleration capabilities of the 3dfx card?

Re: [expert] Linux Backup

2002-12-05 Thread Brian Schroeder
I did a lot of thinking on this one for my home system, and eventually
decided that the most ecconomical way was to get one of those internal
disk caddies and a couple of extra IDE disks to use in it. Given the
use of compression on the backups (eg. tar -cjf), these backup disks
don't have to be as big as the normal production disk(s).

Depending on your circumstances, this may be worth considering.

If you don't have a lot of megs to to backup the backup to cd feature in
Webmin is a nice lightweight backup. It allows you to backup only those
files/directories you need to backup.

Re: [expert] wierd FS situation

Also - just for information:

I saw something similar over the weekend. Due to problems with
an install (another story!), I rebooted in rescue mode, and the
root fs couldn't be found. I did fsck.ext2 on the actual partition
(it is an ext3 partition), fixed some problems, and then mounted it.

ls showed an empty partition, but df saw plenty there. df -T,
however, listed it as fat32! I tried fsck.ext3 (which I assume
should be exactly the same as fsck.ext2), and mount -t ext3, and
everything was OK.

This message is just information only.

I was re-doing the VFAT32 hard drives for a server. I did the usual mke2fs
-j
device (ext3) and the formatting went fine. I was able to store files and
read them just fine.

Due to an act of stupidity (it was early o'clock), I was forced to reload
LM.
After getting the server going again, I went looking for the hard drives
which I had previously re-formatted. They were unreadable. I knew the
formats had been ok, however, no combination of fstab parameters would
restore the drives to usability. Hummm.

After careful troubleshooting, I found that the fdisk partition for the
drives had remained VFAT32. However, the FS was EXT3 (verified by
fsck.ext3).
Gee, I did not know that Linux could force a VFAT drive into becoming an
EXT3
drive. Interesting, no?!

Anyhow, I fixed the situation by fdisking the drives properly and re-doing
the format fstab entries. Just wanted to share that tidbit with everyone.

I'm starting to look at different ways to script this kind of stuff; but
there are SO many ways in Linux...

- have you tried using oowriter?

  One-above-the-other:
   htmlbodya href=1.png/abra href=2.png/a/body/html

   pngtopnm 1.png 1.pnm
   pngtopnm 2.png 2.pnm
   pnmcat -lr 1.pnm 2.pnm | pnmtops | gv - # for left-right
   pnmcat -tb 1.pnm 2.pnm | pnmtops | gv - # for top-bottom

Of course, the script example would require a whitespace pnm file for each
direction if you don't have whitespace around your images... gv - lets
you view the results; replace with lpr to print...

I'm sure there are many more ways that I haven't found yet; but it's fun
exploring... for example, use command completion to find some possible
utilities; at a command prompt, type the start of these commands and hit
the TAB key:
$ png
$ pnm
$ ps
and whatever else you find interesting; for example, pnmtotiff might lead
you to:
$ tiff2ps

The point is to explore... :^)

If you running KDM with the little penguin faces it will look in every
user home directory for what face it should use. That will cause
automount to mount every user home directory on your machine.

If user lmontel does not exist on your machine, then delete the account.

You could also just make a directory in /local_home called lmontel :)

Re: [expert] LM 9.0 - Install Fails - SCSI Disks

2002-11-18 Thread Brian Schroeder
I'm having all sorts of problems with a P233 with an Adaptec 1542.
I also had problems when it had a 1522, and hoped the newer card would
fix them. I haven't given up trying ideas yet, and am not totally
convinced that the SCSI card is the cause of my problems (but removing
it is not an option, since I am trying to load the system onto an
attached disk).

[expert] RPM database wierdness

2002-11-14 Thread Brian Schroeder
I have noticed a wierd problem with RPM on both my home and
work machines since upgrading to mdk9.0. After the machine
has been up for a while, all rpm operations hang. This includes
rpm -q and rpm --rebuilddb as well as rpm -U, rpm -e etc.

rpm -qa and rpm --rebuilddb normally get part way through before
hanging.

In each case, I have been able to kill all other running rpm
processes, and there has been no related error, so far as I can
tell, in /var/log/messages.

The only way I have found to fix it is to reboot (just as you
would to fix a windows problem). Rpm then works for a while,
and then stops again. It's rather frustrating.

[expert] Mdk 9.0, kppp, and default route

2002-11-12 Thread Brian Schroeder
I use kppp at home to dial my ISP. After upgrading from Mandrake 8.2
to 9.0, I found my internet connection didn't work. I checked my
firewall rules, resolv.conf, all messages files, etc. and couldn't
see anything wrong.

I eventually discovered that the default route was not being set to
point to my ISP, and I had to set it manually. This is something
that always worked in previous versions, but doesn't work in mdk9.0.

Now that I know what the problem is, I can set it quite easily each
time, although it is a nuisance. But other family members (who DON'T
know the root password, and are not so computer literate) would not
be able to do this. (Yes, I know I could create a suid script for
them, or something similar, but I don't really want to do this kind
of hack.)

Is this a bug, or is it just a configuration issue? If the latter,
what should I do?

Re: [expert] Creative SB Live 5.1 configuration on ML 9.0

2002-11-12 Thread Brian Schroeder
When I bought my system a couple of years ago, I got it with a
Creative Vibra 128 sound card, and disabled the onboard soundchip -
as you have done. Mandrake 7.2 happily noticed all this and loaded
the driver for card.

Since then, with all subsequent upgrades, it has always ignored the
card and loaded the driver for the onboard soundchip, as is happening
for you. (Fortunately, this driver still works for the sound card,
just not as well as the right one would.)

I have not been able to fix it. So, if you do get an answer, please
let me know too.

hi!

i've killed my onboard soundchip, so i bought a new Creative SB Live PCI
and pluged it in. i deactivated the onboard soundchip in BIOS (which
doesn't change anything, the soundcard is still there).
now i tried to configure my pc to use the new sound card in MCC - Hardware
- Hardware List and ran the cofiguration tool where both soundcards are
listed (onboard soundchip and SoundBlaster). the configuration tool tells
me:
Your card currently use the OSS cmpci driver (default driver for your
card is snd-emu10k1)
the problem is, that i can choose only one driver which is snd-cmipci (the
driver for the broken soundchip), but i have not listed any driver for the
new SoundBlaster.
how can i tell the system to use the SoundBlaster with the driver
snd-emu10k1?

thanks,

Re: [expert] hard disk booting issue IBM PC.

2002-11-07 Thread Brian Schroeder
Even if the BIOS can only see 8G, Linux should see and use then
entire disk quite happily. It doesn't depend on the BIOS for
that info. If you want to use windows as well, you may need to
create an initial 8G (or less) partition for it. You could then
boot the disk with no problems.

But: If you want to use your new controller card, you will need
either of 2 things (so far as I know, these are the only ways) -

1. If the BIOS supports it, tell it to boot from the SCSI device.
I know it's not SCSI, but for booting purposes the BIOS will
treat it as such. Everything will look normal once it has
booted. (I have done this on my own machine.)

2. Failing that, you will have to configure a boot floppy and
  boot off that.

Hi guys,

I've finially decided to fix an issue that has bothered me for ages,, I'm

so I figured I'd ask you guys.

Anyway, I've got a 300PL IBM PC.

Its got a 40gig hard disk in it..

by itself the bios doesn't recognise the drive (see's it as an 8gig).. so I
bought a PCI controller card and plugged it in.

after hooking it all up, the card's bios see's the drive and reports its
stats perfectly..

but I still can't boot from it... I still need to use a boot floppy.

I've tried installing lilo in different places with different configs, but
I
am not sure what else I can do.

[expert] Unformatting a vfat partition

2002-11-03 Thread Brian Schroeder
I think I know the answer to this, but is it possible to
un-format a fat partition (formatted from diskdrake)?

To set the scene: My windows partition trashed itself. I had
a complete backup of it on another partition. So I decided to
format the bad partition and copy on everything from the backup.

Unfortunately (stupidly!), I somehow managed to format the wrong
one...

I haven't touched the newly formated partition since.

YOUR MILAGE MAY VARY!!!

What I have been able to do on other boxes. (We had a sales guy that
transfered everything by sneaker net and kept formating his HDD instead
of the floppy.)

IF the format tool in Linux is fat16 (I think it is) then possibly
either the DOS 6.22 unformat tool or Norton Utilities unformat will
work. (I've used norton several times on the above guys box... hasn't
failed me yet.*grin.)

Another possiblity is this guys tool at

http://dos.li5.org/downloads/rec.htm

OSS Dos tools one is undelete and the other is an unformat tool.

[expert] Custom CD#3

2002-10-27 Thread Brian Schroeder
Given that the International CD for mdk9.0 is about 450M,
I thought I would try to create my own cd#3 by removing some
packages I didn't want (eg. OpenOffice help for a number of
languages), and adding extra top-level directories with other
useful stuff from elswhere. I ended up with an almost full
700M CD to which I gave the same label as the original (so
far as I could tell) with all packages files valid (ie. it
was no coaster).

The final structure was:

CD-
 |-Mandrake-
 | |-RPMS
 |-OtherDir-1
 |-OtherDir-2

etc.

So, except for the extra top-level directories, and a few missing
rpms from the Mandrake/RPMS directory, it should be identical to
the original.

However, during an upgrade (from 8.2), it was not recognized as a
valid cd#3. I muddled through, by using rpm -Fvh on the CD later,
so I eventually got it done. But:

1) What else should I have done originally?
2) Is there anything else I need to fix that the upgrade would have
handled for me that rpm -Fvh wouldn't?

Brian Schroeder.

[expert] New Disk and Lilo Peculiarities

2002-07-16 Thread Brian Schroeder

I have recently bought a new 80G disk, and an ATA133 card to
attach it to. Plus, I have bought a disk caddy to be able to
use my old 20G disk as a removable disk, so I can use it for
backups instead of CDs. As such, the new disk is hde, while
the old one is still hda.

I have carefully read up the various instructions for moving to
a new disk, and have copied everything over, changed fstab and
lilo.conf, etc. (I am having some problems with the BIOS, getting
it to do what I want, but that is another matter...)

I have had to go through all sorts of contortions to get things
going - including multiple boots in rescue mode, and install and
upgrade runs over the disks as well. I have almost got it all
done, now, but noticed a few peculiarities along the way that I
don't understand:

1. When trying to install the bootloader on hde, I would get the
following error (in rescue mode, or in any other mode):
Installation of bootloader failed. The following error occured:
Fatal: stat /dev/hde: No such file or directory.
When in rescue mode, I checked and /dev/hde WAS THERE, and I could
stat it manually. What was going on?

2. At some point, the system modified my lilo.conf file and added
   disk=/dev/hde bios=0x80   OR:
   disk=/dev/hde bios=0x81

   AND:

   other=/dev/hde1
 label=windows
 table=/dev/hde
 map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
 map-drive=0x81
to=0x80

What do these things mean? (I later had to remove the
map-drive bits to make windows boot.)

ALSO: On my new disk I want to use a /boot partition, while on
the old disk /boot was just a part of the root partition. What
do I need to change for this to work?

Brian Schroeder

Re: [expert] OpenOffice and libstdc++.so.4

2002-05-21 Thread Brian Schroeder

I have already checked on my system. There are version 2 and 3
editions.   rpm -qf  /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.3.0.4 gives:
libstdc++3.0-3.0.4-2mdk

I couldn't find a version 4 of libstdc++.

From: William Kenworthy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

do a locate libstdc++.so and see what shows up. The OO binaries
(now?) come with a version of this in the program directory - but in the
past I just symlinked the wanted version with latest I had installed (in
/usr/lib I think) and solved the prob that way. Didnt notice any errors
from doing it.

Re: FIXED! [expert] access to CD-RW

2002-05-12 Thread Brian Schroeder

The HOWTO insists that any other OS partitions (ie. windows) must be
handled by their own OS. Would dd successfully copy an unmounted
windows partition to a new hd?

Brian.

From: David [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Much thanks to nDiScReEt, Bascule, Steve Browne, Brian Parish, Larry Sword,
and Pross(who got in at the last moment).

We got it fixed.

The problem was that I followed the howto at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade/index.html to upgrade my
HD.

Following directions, I used a _temporary_ lilo config for the initial
booting of the new HD. In the config, the line _append=hdb=ide-scsi_ was
omitted. Thus, I had not re-corrected my lilo config. nDiScReEt's post
below opened my eyes. The second I seen it, I knew what it was. I'm now
kicking myself (HARD).

Thanks to all
Dave

This often indicates that the program is linked against libraries that
do not exist on your system. Try running ldd against the binary and see
what it reports. Then you might try installing compatible libraries or
even symlinking the current versions to names of the old.

Not much help, I'm afraid:

root ldd -v /usr/local/wordperfect/wpbin/xwp
/usr/bin/ldd: /usr/local/wordperfect/wpbin/xwp: No such file or directory

(or with any other switch on ldd - the same result)

[expert] Postgres Upgrade

2002-04-25 Thread Brian Schroeder

A little hand-holding is requested here. I don't really know
what I am doing when it comes to dbaing.

Postgresql was upgraded with mdk8.2, and doesn't start because
there is an existing earlier-version database - fair enough.
However, the instructions for fixing this are for upgrading from
a 6.x version of postgres - my database is 7.0. Trying to
extrapolate from these instructions points me to dump programs
that don't seem to exist on my system.

How can I upgrade my database to run with postgres 7.2?

(I am sending this from work, the problem is on a home machine.)

I don't like vi or emacs! To me, they are both unpleasant and

Re: [expert] adaptec ava 1502-a

2002-02-25 Thread Brian Schroeder

I was able to get an old Adaptec 1522 card and 2G SCSI disk a few years
back, which I put into a pentium machine. I had all sorts of problems
getting it to work properly. There seemed to be conflicts with the sound
card and with the network card. None of the problems jumped out at me
and said here I am, most were worked out by examining the /proc files
and by trial-and-error. I was able to get some documentation from Adaptec's
web site, and spent a lot of time moving jumpers on the card.

Ultimately this did get me there! At install time, Mandrake didn't auto-
sense the card straight away, but when I told it that it was there, it did
see it and picked up all the settings properly (eg. IRQ) without me having
to tell it explicitly.

This route may be worth you trying.

Brian.

I've just gone through a similar situation with an AVA-1505 card. It
uses
ioport 0x340 and irq 10 (or 11, can't remember just now). Try this at the
command line, as root:
modprobe aha152x io=0x340 irq=10 (try 11 if 10 doesn't work).

On my AVA-1505 card, the above works and lsmod shows that the module
is
loaded. If I then do a modprobe sr_mod, I get to use my SCSI cdrom.

I automate the loading of the kernel modules, by putting the two
modprobe
lines as the last two lines in /etc/rc.local. That is the only way I've
managed to get them to work; specifically, they won't work from an initrd.
But I'm going to try the append=aha152x=. route next and see what
happens.

This SCSI card was not picked up by the installer for Mandrake 8.2 beta
2,
nor did the installer allow me to manually configure the card. A
post-install manual configuration is the only way that works.

[expert] Automounter maps from a Sun NIS+ server

2001-12-09 Thread Brian Schroeder

I hope someone can help me with this. I have scoured the net to no avail so
far.

We have a Sun running NIS+ in YP compatability mode. Our linux machines
happily
get passwd, group, host, etc. info from it. But I can't get it to read
automount maps. I have the maps configured on the server as, for example:

userA server:/export/home/
userB server:/export/home/

etc.

but ypcat auto_home returns:

server:/export/home/
server:/export/home/

ie., it loses the first field, making the map unusable.

Installing the NIS+ client for linux is not really an option at this stage.
So
what do I need to do?

Re: [expert] NTP -- driving me crazy!

2001-12-02 Thread Brian Schroeder

I have had some problems with ntp not working as well, while xntp3
worked perfectly. One thing I found (from trawling through the
docs) was that adding a 3 on the line after the server line can
help. This is telling the ntp4 client that the server is ntp3.

I am still having a few other issues, but this did fix it in a
number of cases.

the ntp stuff in lm now is the ntp4 release whereas xntpd uses ntp3 (4
should be backwards compatible with 3), in normal usage the only
difference is that, as bill says, you need to have /etc/init.d./ntpd
running and not as before, /xntpd, to all usual intents and
purposes, a rename, clients running xntpd have no problem syncing with
a server running ntpd and vice versa

Interesting. I don't know what it is then, but xntp3 works and ntp
doesn't.
So running ntp will keep running ntpdate every so often to keep synced
with
the server listed in /etc/ntp.conf? From what I've read, with ntp, you
have
to now have to have ntpdate in a cronjob. IMHO, that should be the default
behaviour.

[expert] NIS Domain Name and 8.1

2001-11-19 Thread Brian Schroeder

Under mdk8.0 this was not a problem. But with 8.1 - both an
upgrade and a fresh install - I am finding that the NIS domain
name is set to the DNS domain name whenever the network is
(re)started. Since they are different, this causes ypbind
to fail.

I have set the NISDOMAIN variable in /etc/sysconfig/network,
and I have tried putting the necessary information into the
/etc/yp.conf file. But nothing works.

I can put a hack into the /etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind script to
set the domain name, but I'm not really happy with that as a
solution.

Is something broken? Is there something I am doing wrong,
or is there something new in the configuration that I am
not aware of?

(Note: I am using DHCP clients on these machines, in case
that influences anything.)

Just wondering how many people use FVWM these days.

I started using it a number of years ago (version 2), and

have since tried gnome and kde (both very nice), but have
gone back to FVWM mostly.

I am running FVWM 2.4, but am a little frustrated that
Mandrake still only ship 2.2.4, and even that must be
specially installed from the CD as it is no longer even a
selectable option during the install.

The best results are attained by using rpm -ivh the install the kernel

Then run lilo, check all your config files, and then reboot your system

If everything loads and runs properly then install the kernel source and

[expert] Freq 2 Uninstallable RPMs on Compaq 233

2001-10-22 Thread Brian Schroeder

I have been following the Corrupted files -RPM thread, and trying some of
the
suggestions there, with no success.

I have the Freq 20010619 CDs, which I have successfully loaded on other
machines,
but am having trouble with a particular machine at home. Most of the
install goes
properly, but some RPMs simply fail. Some of these, I have eventually been
able
to install by repeatedly using rpm -Uvh, but some simply will not go.
They
fail with Segmentation fault (core dumped) messages. Two particular
examples are gimp,
and kdebase.

I have tried installing from CD, via a network link, and from files directly
on
the local hard disk. I have tried newer files which I downloaded. Nothing
works.
I tried disabling dma (via both bios and hdparm), with no effect.

Has anyone got any ideas?

A little background:

Compaq Pentium 233, 64M memory, 3G Maxtor IDE disk.
I have also added an Adaptec AHA1520B SCSI card and a Seagate (I think) 2G
disk.
I have been very careful with IRQs and other parameters on this.
The system is dual booting with Win95 - with both OSes using both disks.

I previously ran mdk7.2 on this system - without the SCSI - but with another
1.5G
IDE disk which later died. There were no problems. This is now a fresh
install,
not an upgrade.

Is there any chance mdk 8.1 will fix the problems? I am hoping to get that
soon.

Brian.

I had the same problem!
When you install a new version of ssh, the new configuration file is saved
as
/etc/ssh/ssh_config.rpm instead of /etc/ssh/ssh_config.
You don't need to compile the source code of ssh, you can install the
binary
rpm's, but be carefully with the config file, I believe it will not be
changed to match the new version.
And of course all computers must have the same version.

machines that can only be accessed via ssh. This worked fine in 7.2, but
now I
get the following error:

OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 90581f, you have 90600f

Given that I can't upgrade the other machines, what is the best way of
making this work (I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to this sort of
thing)? Is there a
backwards-compatible switch I can use? Can I simply downgrade to the
version of
OpenSSL provided with mdk7.2 without breaking anything? Or...?

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: [expert] Lightweight window managers

2001-08-05 Thread Brian Schroeder

I use FVWM2, and have for quite a few years now. I tried the more
recent versions of KDE and Gnome, and have tried Afterstep, Icewm,
XFCE, Qvwm, and a few others, but have gone back to fvwm.

Fvwm2 is now on version 2.4, and I find it very configurable. I can
do whatever I want with it, and can make it look any way I like.

Unfortunately, Mandrake chose not to include it with 8.0. And the version
they do have available is stuck at Fvwm 2.2. However, the 2.4 edition
is available via the Fvwm web site.

Brian Schroeder

I'd like to get the recommendations of the experts for a ranking of
lightweight window managers you've used, with any opinions you'd like to
share - i.e., So-and-so wm is really light, but it's just too damn
inconvenient, or hard or the eyes, or isn't really light, or doesn't
release memory properly, etc.

Thanks,

Edmund

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8 FREQ and VMware, Mozilla etc.

2001-07-31 Thread Brian Schroeder

I had actually read that, but assumed it was specifically for an SMP kernel.
I have since tried booting into 2.2.19 and 2.2.17 (my old 7.2 kernel) - with
the same error!

However, following your recommendation, I started looking back through the
mailing list archives.
I found a suggestion that removing the libsafe package enabled vmware to
work. I tried it, and it did!
It all works properly now, thankyou.

But, can anyone tell me what libsafe is supposed to do. I don't want my
system to break because I removed it.

Your problem is with vmnet which is a kernel module - I would not be at
all surprised if this were a problem with 2.4.5 after what I went through
getting it going with SMP 2.4.3.

You're probably stuffed with the RPM unless it comes with the module
rebuild scripts and sources; if you're feeling brave, search the archives
for HOWTO - VMware under Mandrake 8 - SMP 2.4.3 for how I got round the
problem using the 2.0.4 distribution from the VMware website.

[expert] Mandrake 8 FREQ and VMware, Mozilla etc.

2001-07-30 Thread Brian Schroeder

Hi everyone,

I have just taken the plunge and upgraded my 7.2 system to Mandrake Freq
20010619. This has broken a few things, however.

1. Mozilla copied my Netscape config quite accurately. It will find
anything on the local intranet.
However, it fails to find anything on the internet. Konqeror is the same.
Mozilla sits there Resolving host www, and eventually a pop-up
appears: The operation timed out when attempting to contact www

I have installed Netscape 4.78 from cooker, and that still works fine.
I have triple checked the proxy, and other, settings in Mozilla.
Is there anything else I should be chasing up?

2. I can't get VMware to work. It was very happy in 7.2.
I have removed and re-installed the VMware installation:
VMware-2.0.4-1142.i386.rpm

The install gives me, at the end:

Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor [ OK ]
   Virtual ethernet[ OK ]
   Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 [FAILED]
   Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background)[ OK ]

The configuration of VMware 2.0.4 build-1142 for Linux for this running
kernel
completed successfully.

When I then try to run vmware, i get Segmentation fault and that's it.

What can I do here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you use manual proxy settings or an automatic script (.pac URL)? I have
had some problems with an automatic proxy script in the past, probably due
to problems with the javascript interpeter (as that script is actually
javascript).

Yes, it does use a proxy.pac URL. I have tried putting in manual proxy
settings, and it seems to work OK now.

Do you use kernel 2.4? If so: is this version of vmware good for kernel
2.4? I figure that the vmware site will have more details about that.

This version of vmware is supposed to support Mandrake 8 and the 2.4 kernel.
  But is that 2.4.3 only?
Is there a problem with the 2.4.5 that comes with FREQ?

Can I merely copy everything to disk, and replace the older packages with

And then write everything back to new CDs...
Or are there gotchas involved that would mess everything up? Is there a

Is swap really in use? Here at home (same config as yours), it's not.
It's
rather that top reports the memory wrong, as it also counts the 32+ MB on
your nVidia card that X uses and thus doesn't count correctly.

IOW: Nothing to worry about.

I am using LM7.2 with an nVidia TNT Riva 32M graphics card. Using top, I

56M out of a total of 128M. Why should X use so much memory?

[expert] PPP - throughput dies

2001-06-16 Thread Brian Schroeder

Running LM7.2, I use kppp. When connected, I keep the kppp Statistics
window up all the time to watch what is happening. I
have found that I rarely get a continuous flow of data, except for
some times when I may have 6 or so wgets running at the same time.
I realise that transient conditions do affect things considerably,
but the up-and-down nature of the traffic graph - including periods
of no throughput - seems a bit much.

I have also noticed that when the local CPU is doing work of any
significance, throughput dies. I wouldn't have thought it should
have any major effect on PPP traffic. Sometimes, it gets to the
point when no high-level protocol will move any data at all unless
I reset my modem and re-dial - re-establishing the ppp link. Things
like DNS lookups, and ntp work, but HTTP, NNTP, and FTP seize up
completely.

I have examined everything I can find, including all log files I can
find, but cannot find anything to tell me what is happening.

Is this normal? Or, what should I be looking for?

[expert] Problems Printing extra Type1 Fonts from Staroffice

2001-05-17 Thread Brian Schroeder

I have installed some extra Type1 fonts on my M7.2 system for use in
Staroffice 5.2. So far as I can tell, I have followed the supplied
instructions properly. I used the spadmin program to add the fonts to
Staroffice.
I can now see the fonts correctly on the screen, but when I try to
print they don't come out. I am printing to an HP Laserjet 4M with
postscript.

A related problem: I have also added these fonts to my ghostscript
configuration. According to the instructions I read, this included
setting the GS_LIB environment variable. This works well. I can now
see these fonts on the screen through ghostscript. But how do I get
CUPS to do so as well when I want to print via ghostscript?

Re: [expert] sound - playing music cds

2001-03-08 Thread Brian Schroeder

If this problem is the same as mine, then I'm afraid the answer is
nothing as simple as has been suggested so far. I have the same
problem (midi files don't play either!) with LM 7.2 on my machine.
Everything works fine in Windows, but not in Linux, and, like most
people on this list, I want linux to work better than windows, not
worse!

Since presenting this problem to the list, I have received little
response - so indicating that it is not an easy one!

Any Mandrake people listening? got any ideas?

Oh the woes of soundcards... I still can't do midi's under mine and the I
think the joystick is non-functional as well. Are you trying to play Audio
CD's under KDE and\or Gnome. I seem to have more success with sound
under Gnome. Other GUI's do less or more well. YMMV. Try a a few
of the other window managers and see how it does... :)

  Daniel in NJ...

p.s. - I have a C-media chipset and apparently the only way to
get midi and joystick is download a special "driver" module from C-Media
and compile it into the Kernel. Since I do not relish the idea I may or may
not give it a try. Good Luck!

[expert] No Midi or CD playing on Creative Vibra128

2001-02-16 Thread Brian Schroeder

System: 800MHz Duron

- disabled in setup)
 Creative Vibra128 Sound Card
 50x CD + 32x CDRW

 Dual-boot - Windows-ME + Mandrake 7.2

Under Windows, the sound card works exactly as expected. General sounds
play, Midi files play, music CDs play.

Under Linux, I have had all sorts of problems. After the original install,
basic sounds played properly, although midi files and music CDs didn't.

It seemed to have something to do with the install of PhotoPaint... I lost
all sound.

After quite a bit of playing around - including re-compiling my kernel - I
have been able to get it back to it's original state. General sounds play,
but midis and CDs still don't.

playmidi, for example, crashes with the following error:
open /dev/sequencer: No such device

/dev/sequencer DOES exist. I have re-installed the dev-3.0.6-2mdk rpm from
the Mandrake CD, to no avail.

The computer seems to be playing the music CDs properly, but no sound comes
out. Under Windows there is no problem, so clearly the internal wiring is
correct.

SoundDrake (and sndconfig) see and configure for the Creative CT5880 - which
is the disabled on-board audio - and select the es1371 driver.

I have included some exerpts from my messages file below. Can anyone tell

[expert] Multiple KDE Menu Entries

2001-02-07 Thread Brian Schroeder

I am using Mandrake 7.2 + a few updates on my system.

Some time last year I downloaded Corel's Photopaint for Linux. I
have just got around to installing it. I had a few problems, since
the version I got was designed for Redhat, but was eventually able
to get it in and going.

So far as I can see, it appears that this install was responsible
for a weird change to my menus. This is under KDE. I have checked
Gnome, and there is no problem there. All of the program entries
(ie. not sub-menus) now appear 4 times - rather than once.

When I re-installed the menu package from the CD, the menus returned
to normal - briefly. But then reverted to the problematic state.

I have run the update-menus program a few times, and it doesn't seem
to help. It does, though, give the following error:

cp: /usr/share/gnome/apps/Apps/*: No such file or directory

I have also updated to menu-2.1.5-42mdk.

The file /etc/menu/menudrakeentry only has 1 entry for each.

Can anyone give me any pointers please?

Thankyou,

Brian Schroeder.
