[expert] I made a mistake

2000-08-02 Thread Liangyu Wang

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 7.1 under windows 98 and after installation, Grub
provided a menu to choose operating system, Linux and windows. It worked
well. Later, I wanted to set windows to be default OS, So in
DrakeConf-DrakeBoot, I set the boot device from hda to hda1. Now I know I
should not set in this way, but I got a problem: The machine can only start
linux, not windows even though the windows option is still in the Grub menu
and even though I set the boot device back to hda.

I don't know how to get windows back, Could someone help me out?

Liangyu

I had this happen when installing a certain distro... looks like you clobbered
your W98 boot block on hda1... this should have an "Are you sure?" dialog.

I got lucky and found a M$ boot block sitting in /boot (RedHat) which worked for
me... I think boot.0340 was the one.

There are several *.b and boot.* files in /boot; most of the time they don't
contain what they their name implies... If you are lucky, you will find one
that will work; but it's really risky. Find a bootable Windblows diskette and
have a look at the boot block; if I remember correctly, the hd version is
similar. Do NOT try to write a /boot/*.b or /boot/boot.* to your hda1 unless
you are pretty certain it is a M$ boot block.

Of course, the last resort is to re-install W98...

Use at your own risk; provided so that someone might know more about these /boot
files...

I imagine instead of setting the boot device from hda1 to hda (which
probably won't (doesn't) work), you should tell it to boot win by
default instead of linux. For some reason I can't get DrakConf to
run at this moment so I can't double-check this tho. See if there is
a default setting or a * beside one which indicates it is the
default...
