This is normal. As far as Linux is concerned your K6's MTRR registers conform to the i586 specs, not i686 specs... If you set your kernel to use i686 code you'll get a bunch of i686 MTRR errors during bootup. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Dennis Robertson Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 6:35 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: WAIT!! um The K6 should be recognized as an i686. The Pentium 60-233mmx, Cyrix 6x86/MX, and AMD K5 were all i586 type processors. The PPro 150-200, P2/3, and K6/6-2 would be considered i686. I had this before and ran it down. I was running an authentic AMD '586; this was identified by rpm as a 486. RPM is the problem Now I've two K6/2s also, and investigated a little, being a hardware head. Kernel notes make clear the K6 is an i686. Use --nodeps with rpm and forget it until you crash - that's my advice. -- Regards, Declan Moriarty Applied Researches - Ireland's Foremost Electronic Hardware Genius A Slightly Serious(TM) Company Good judgement comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgement. The AMD 5x86 is a fast 486, nothing more. It's 100% 486 architecture; they tried to fool a everyone with that. AMD didn't have a true i586 processor until the K5. My K6-2/500 shows up as an i586. My Cyrix M2/PR300 shows up as an i686. There's something about the K6 that prevents it from qualifying as an i686. I have been following this thread fairly closely for curiousity sake. From what I have been able to gleen from the learned users that have contributed is that the K6-2 apparently has i686 archetecture. The problem from my reading appears to be that Mandrake doesn't recognize the K6-2 architecture correctly. The logical solution would appear to be to correct the architecture recognition problem BEFORE the next shrink-wrapped release to avoid alienating this large user base. I don't know how difficult this problem is to correct, but with all the great people working for and contributing to Mandrake, it can't be all that difficult. RE: WAIT!! STOP!! Re: [expert] DON'T USE --ignorearch!!!
Eh, no. Have you looked at the kernel code? Have you tried recompiling the kernel? (Did you read the HELP about this issue?) Linux utilizes the mtrr registers which differ between the i686 and the K6. The K6 and the i586 are a correct match according to the kernel mtrr handler. If you want optimal speed with your K6 you are better off using the i586 optimizations, otherwise the byte alignments for the i686 will also come into play... etc. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of David Rankin Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 9:49 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: WAIT!!
