0B95(Tamil letter KA) doesn't merge with 0BB7 (Tamil letter SSA)

Above combination was tested against lohit-tamil-fonts-2.4.4-3.fc12.noarch.rpm.

--- Comment #7 from K. Sethu skh...@gmail.com 2009-11-24 11:09:19 EDT ---

I tested in Ubuntu platforms the bug fixed font
http://pravins.fedorapeople.org/Lohit-Tamil.ttf that Pravin points to in
Comment #4 .

I confirm that the bug is solved.

In Ubuntu (and similarly other Debian based systms) until this bug fixed update
for ttf-indic-fonts-core comes onstream we can copy the bug-fixed
Lohit-Tamil.ttf to the existing font name which is lohit_ta.ttf . For example
for Ubuntu the steps are as follows:

From a terminal

1. Close all opened apps which use Lohit Tamil for rendering any content

2. cd to the folder in which the bug fixed Lohit-Tamil.ttf is downloaded.

3. enter the following command

sudo cp Lohit-Tamil.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-indic-fonts-core/lohit_ta.ttf

Screenshot for Font GUI in Hindi (hi_IN) locale

Description of problem:

All languages using Lohit as default font, instead of latin characters, boxes
appear on the FontGUI. Attached screenshot for Hindi (hi_IN) and Malayalam
(ml_IN)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.4.3-2.fc12

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Login to any indic locale using Lohit as the default font eg: Hindi, Marathi,
Bengali-India etc
2. Go to System-Preferences-Appearance-Fonts
3. Check the font displayed, all boxes appear instead of English alphabets

Actual results:
Reproducing above steps, you see only boxes.

Expected results:

Created an attachment (id=372855)
 -- (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=372855)
Screenshot of XFCE4 input method setting tool. Note the coarse text

Description of problem:
I upgraded to Fedora 12 and to my surprise, some Chinese text that used to be
displayed correctly now appears to be rendered ugly and broken.

Examples can be found in the attached screenshots. All shots are taken on the
F12 system. Unfortunately I didn't take shots on the previous, working system
(because it worked as expected) so there's no comparison.

On my current F12 install the font packages are almost the same as the previous
F11 system. There are no additional fonts installed.

The installed CJK fonts are:

cjkuni-fonts-ghostscript-0.2.20080216.1-29.fc12.noarch
cjkuni-ukai-fonts-0.2.20080216.1-29.fc12.noarch
cjkuni-uming-fonts-0.2.20080216.1-29.fc12.noarch

wqy-bitmap-fonts-0.9.9-11.fc12.noarch
wqy-unibit-fonts-1.1.0-7.fc12.noarch
wqy-zenhei-fonts-0.8.38-3.fc12.noarch

xorg-x11-fonts-misc-7.2-9.fc12.noarch

I'm not sure whether this bug should be reported against this package or any of
the font packages. I really don't know. I just guessed this could possibly be a
fontconfig problem, since I didn't change the fonts.

The Appearance setting is also inherited from the previous install. The default
font used is DejaVu Sans 9. In F11 it used to do the right thing with this
setting (displaying Western text in DejaVu Sans and render CJK text
beautifully). I didn't change anything.

Also, subpixel antialiasing seems to have stopped working for CJK text too.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
fontconfig-2.7.3-1.fc12.i686

Additional info:
I guess the cause of this issue is complex, but I have to choose a package to
report the bug against ;) If you feel it's necessary, please also inform the
font maintainers of this issue.

Thanks.

The rendered text in the red circle is the most offending. Also the larger

You can check if the font file is not missing a few glyphs running

DEBUG=256 fc-query

If the coverage is ok (target locale appears with a zero count in the list)
then the relative priorities of those fonts need to be tweaked with
/usr/share/fontconfig/templates/l10n-font-template.* like rules

(drop a basic rule for every font that needs l10n de-ambiguation at prefix x,
and a l10n rule with the correct local for prio override at prefix x+1)

(In reply to comment #15)
The issue disappeared when the matrix multiplication directive for Meera font
has changed. From the entry for edit matrix directive for the font, the 'times'
element and its child 'name' with value 'matrix' are removed. I don't know
whether this is the right method because haven't seen any documentation
regarding this. I think fontconfig is not well-documented about this entry.

The directive before change = http://pastie.org/651165

The directive after change = http://pastie.org/651160

fontconfig rules dont work well if we remove
namematrix/name
above line from smc-fonts conf file
but yes underline issue go out.

--- Comment #18 from Bug Zapper fedora-triage-l...@redhat.com 2009-11-18
03:24:46 EDT ---

This message is a reminder that Fedora 10 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 10. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '10'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 10's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 10 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

The process we are following is described here:

this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora

--- Comment #2 from Bug Zapper fedora-triage-l...@redhat.com 2009-11-18
07:00:16 EDT ---
