I noticed in an update today that an application f-spot (a photo viewer)
suddenly required gnome-screensaver which was then installed as a dependency.
As a result, xscreensaver which I have installed and prefer over
gnome-screensaver was no longer functional.

If you find your xscreensaver suddenly no longer works due to an upgrade (and
you weren't paying attention) do this:

yum -e f-spot gnome-screensaver

and all will be well with the world again.

Yesterday I submitted a bug-report for this:

F10-F11 kernels versions

2009-06-10 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi All,

Today I did an upgrade (F10-F11) on one of my Pentium IV machines. In F10 is
was running a xxx.i686 kernel. After the upgrade it is running a xxx.i586
kernel. Why? I thought that it shold install the PAE-kernel by default

As a side effect the kernel-devel package was not set to be updated
(installed versions of x.f10.i686 seems to be prefered abovee x.fc11.i586)
Mannually deinstalling the obsolete F10 pacakges and installing the F11
version solved the problem.

F11 vmware server 2.x

2009-06-10 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi all,

After upgrading a 32bits machine to F11 I had some problem reconfiguring
VMWARE-server 2.x. I downloaded a patch from
   http://www.saarlinux.de/blog/?p=5

With this patch I was able to perform vmware-config.pl. It gave a lot of
warnings. After that it starts.

Does anybody know how good this patch is (or are there better ones)?
Does this patch also work for 64bit-Fedora?

It is clear that different institutions have different setups despite all
being on Eduroam. Is there any information about the nature of the
authentication system at your institution? I would be surprised if there is
not a local web page giving some information on how to connect - if that
guidance is for MS rather than linux then the information will still act as
a guide for the Fedora connection.
From the web page (in Dutch):
http://luchthaven.tudelft.nl/ttls.htm

Netwerk verificatie : open
Gegevenscodering: WEP
Verificatietype : EAP/TTLS
Verificatieprotocol : PAP
Zwervende identiteit: anonym...@tudelft.nl

By the way if your connection needs a certificate then you may find that the
cert at /etc/pki/tls/cert.pem will allow the authentication to work?
The cert is at the same web-page.

What I tried to do is to follow this as closely as possible.

The linux info on this page is more than half a year old. At that time I
had no problem connecting to the network (I was able to select
WPA-enterprise in Fedora 8)

I also contacted our IT-support. They are vere Windows-focussed( brr...) and
have hardly any knowledge of linux.

 Hi All,

I'm trying to use the inter-university wireless network called Eduroam on
 my
laptop on which F10 is installed. I tried several options, but it seems
 not
to work. I'm using Network-manager to set things up.
It used to work some time ago for F8 or F9.

Is there someone out with a working Eduroam connection on F10, who can
 help
 me configuring the machine?

eduroam in my university is WPA2/AES, EAP-TTLS+PAP. With this and
NetworkManager connect to eduroam is very simple (I translate GUI from
spanish and may not be very accurate)

. Right click in NetworkManager applet.
. Click on Edit connections.
. Click on Wireless tab.
. Click on Add.
. Fill in SSID with eduroam.
. Click on Wireless Security tab.
. Select WPA/WPA2 Enterprise from security list.
. Select Tunneled TLS from Authentication list.
. Fill in Anonymous identity with anonym...@tudelft.nl.
. In CA Certificate select the file with the root certificate of the CA
that sign the certificate of tudelft.nl radius server.
. Select PAP from Inner Authentication.
. Fill in Username and Password.
. Accept.

Ok, I can do this. If I remember correctly this was the configuration I
created half a year back.
I did exactly the above, but when trying to connect A window pops up
title of window : wireless Network autentication required

It looks similar to the menu under the Wireless Security tab. Fernando
mentions. However from this one I cannot select WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. So I
select Dynamic WEP (802.1x) instead. This does not connect me.

If I go to the menus Fernando advises, I see a new entry Auto eduroam.
Here I can change back to WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. However when I try to
connect the authorization window pops up again, without possibility for
WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. When I look into the menus Fernando advises, I see
that another entry Auto eduroam is added.

What is wrong??

Grub/Plymouth problem

2008-12-15 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi all,
I have seen the following on 2 of my systems:

  -Upgared form F9-F10 works fine
During boot I see a white/blue progress bar at the bottom of the screen
-After some updates of some packages (I have no idea which one triggered
the problem) the system is unbooteable. After power-up it hangs saying
GRUB instead of the normal GRUB stage 2 anbd continueing
-I solved the problem by inserting a F10 DVD and perform an upgrade with a
reinstallation of the bootloader (upgrade bootloader did not work)
-This makes the machine booteable again in text mode only (so no white/blue
  progress bar (plymouth I presume)

Has anybody any idea what went wrong?
How do I get this progress bar back?

 []'s
 Marcelo

No, I didn't find anything helpful there, language is already set
 correctly as US English.

But I have proved that the problem is triggered when xmodmap is run.
If I run it to remap just one key it appears my keyboard layout is
corrupted and worst of all remapping the RH Windows key [#116] to the
degree° symbol renders the down cursor key [#104] useless, it becomes
a degree key in addition to 116?

This is only a problem on the F-10 computer. These are changes I have
made routinely in every version of Fedora!

I will put off upgrading this F-9 computer for a while since that
problem precludes such things as disabling the Caps Lock key and I am
 a lousy typist.

 Bob

This morning I tried booting the computer from the F-9 Live Gnome CD
and things appear to work normally after I enter /usr/bin/xmodmap
-e 'keycode 116=degree'

The Windows key to the right of the right hand ALT key now produces
a ° [degree] symbol while the cursor down arrow key still
functions normally.

It would be informative if someone else running F-10 would try
duplicating my problem by entering:
/usr/bin/xmodmap -e 'keycode 116=degree' and see if they get the
degree symbol and if the down arrow still works normally?

The F-10 in question was installed from the live CD but I would not
expect that to make any difference.

Thanks.

Bob

I found many problems on F10 when using xmodmap. I'm not sure if xmodmap is
to blame or changed keycodes. If I run xkeycaps and press keys I see for
some keys the wrong keys highlighted. The right-Alt is one of the
problem keys. However with xkeycaps you can find out the new keycode and
addapt the .xmodmap file or xmodmap command to it.
Saving a .xmodmap file from xkeycaps will give problems.

key mapping problem

2008-11-28 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi all,

I upgraded my Acer-Aspire-1700 Laptop from F9-F10
After that I got problems with the key-mapping

I use xmodmap to redefine some keys. This worked perfectly in F9 but after
the upgrade some keys (i.e. left_arrow) is not working, when typed on the
laptop's own keyboard. On a attached USB-keyboard everything is fine.
Removing the xmodmap-table make at least the arrow keys work again.

If I check with the program xkeycaps which keycodes are generated I see
that on the laptops-keyboard the left_arrow generates code 71 instead of 64,
which explains why xmodmap fails because keycode 71 (right-ctrl) is redefined.

A few other keys show the same strange behaviour

Can anybody explain this?

okular printing problem

2008-09-08 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi All,

I have a problem printing pdf-files using okular
   OS : F9 (both 32 and 64 bit)
   program : okular
printer type : HP ColorLaserJet 4650dn

When I select print from okular and try to print in Landscape mode it
actualy prints in Portrait mode with the correct scaling of the
landscape mode (so part of the print falls off the paper)
When I select print from okular and try to print in Portrait mode it
actualy prints in Landscape mode with the correct scaling of the
Portrait mode (so part it fills only part of the width of the paper)

 - Print preview shows the print as expected: so no problem here
 - Printing from OpenOffice gives no problems on the same machines and same
   printer

Any idea what can be the problem?

recent changes of xscreensaver

2008-07-23 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi All,

I'm running F9 with Nvidia-twinview. Since the last update of xscreensaver
this week xscreensaver sees the 2 sceeens as one big display, running one
hack. It used to be that one hack per display was running. I prefer the
behavior of one hack per screen.
Is this a bug or a feature?
Is thare a configuration setting to control what xscreensaver does with the
dual-screens?

Well, have you installed a package of codecs? Those aren't included in
Fedora. If you had them before you must have installed them from
somewhere, either as an rpm package or from a tarball. If you did, did
you have RealPlayer itself (which installs stuff in /usr/local) or
something like the w32codec package?

No to both.
I only had gecko-mplayer, which has been upgraded from mplayer on the machine.

F9, Nvidia Direct rendering

2008-06-02 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi all,

I just installed the new Nvidia graphics driver from livna on my F9 system.
Much improvement compared to the previos version.
But,...
glxinfo indicates that Direct rendering is disabled (why???)

Because of this problem some 3D programs do not start from the Fedora-menu
i.e. the game torcs
-started from the menu trocs-wrapper is atrted which checks the Direct
  rendering and fails.
-giving the command torcs in a terminal-window starts/runs the program fine

Is this a problem of the Nividia driver or can this be configured?

Problems playing audiostreams in F9

2008-06-02 Thread Jouk Jansen
Hi all,

Not all of my favourite internet-radio stations play after an upgrade from
F8-F9. I point fire fox to i.e. the following web-pages with varying results.
In both cases the gecko-mplayer is suposed to be working

http://www.dr.dk/netradio/metafiler/asx/DR_Klassisk_32.asx
   Result : perfect sound

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/ram/r3g2.ram
Result : silence (I can see in the firefox window the knobs of mplayer)

  What could be the problem?
