Re: [Felvtalk] Tiffany
Hi Roxanne, I just lost my 5-1/2 year old FeLV+ male cat - Tigger - however I do think if I had gotten him on the Winstrol (Stanozolol) sooner, along with the Prednisolone, he would have had a chance of making it longer. It turned his bone marrow back on to producing blood cells, and I believe it turned his anemia from non-regenerative to regenerative. I also wish I would have put him on the antibiotic Doxycycline rather than Convenia because it may interfere with the virus duplicating itself. If you do decide to try Winstrol and are unable to find it - I do have a source for it in Arizona - a very good company. I used the liquid and it worked well because it was salmon-flavorerd. It comes in other forms and flavors also. I hope Tiffany is doing better! Re: [Felvtalk] Tiffany
I would suggest considering Aranesp (Darbepoetin) over Epogen, but what is causing the anemia? Is she in kidney failure, or is it something else? What are her numbers, especially BUN, Creatnine, Phosphorus, WBC and especially her PCV?I have two cat that were diagnosed as FeLV+ more than 3 years ago, one is 15, the other 4.5-Original Message- From: Roxanne SmithSent: May 12, 2016 12:56 PM To: Felvtalk Subject: [Felvtalk] Tiffany In the last two weeks my poor Tiffany has had three blood transfusions. Re: [Felvtalk] Tiffany
Bailey was diagnosed at 5 months of age and lived to be 11 years old, his last 6 months were hard but the rest of the time he lived a relatively normal healthy life. I hope Tiffany pulls through this. Bailey was on epogen for the last 6 months and he did very well on it, he had undiagnosed cancer and it eventually took him though. We tested thinking he may have cancer but none of the tests were conclusive unfortunately and my vet couldn't treat for a cancer she couldn't diagnose ... it ended up being pancreatic cancer, which I suspected, when he had a feeding tube he seemed to be very touchy sometimes when being fed, his tummy probably hurt because he was having an undiagnosed pancreatitis flair up, sometimes he would run from me when I was getting ready to feed him, it just didn't connect with me at the time. Re: [Felvtalk] Tiffany
Sorry that Tiffany isn’t doing well, so sad, and scary I know. Yes, they can live awhile and some for a long time. I looked up Epogen (because I never heard of it). EPOGEN® is a prescription medicine used to treat a lower than normal number of red blood cells (anemia) caused by chronic kidney disease in patients on dialysis to reduce or avoid the need for red blood cell transfusions. As Armani says, if you can find the Winstrol that is for sure worth a shot as we have seen positive results. NVH Tripsy is natural remedy if you want to add something like that. There are a lot of people who say it has really helped with their kitties very serious kidneys and urinary problems, so maybe, I am not an expert on anemia, but it says it has to do with the kidneys...? My kitty takes it in hopes of preventing struvite crystals. Whatever you decide to do, I will pray that little Tiffany hangs in there and starts feeling better soon. Please keep us updated. Re: [Felvtalk] Tiffany
Roxanne You may be new to this chatline, and so I will bore the rest of the participants by repeating that my advice is that you immediately put Tiffany on Winstrol (Stanazolol). It is an anabolic steroid. It helps to turn back on the bone marrow to produce red cells, and eventually, white cells and platelets. The dose is 2 mg a day to start until you get a good response (haematocrit back over 20 - sounds like Tiffany must be down below 10 as my Zander was when he got blood transfusions). Once over 2 mg a day, you can if you want, drop it down to 1 mg a day until back within reference ranges for red cells, haematocrit, white cells, platelets, etc. In addition to the Winstrol, I recommend prednisone, Doxycycline and Metoclompromide. My Zander lived another 6 years after his "crash" caused by Feline Leukemia. He also received blood transfusions and was on an oxygen tent. I don't want to bore everyone else by repeating this advice in any more detail, but I am happy to go into further details if you want. Be forewarned that the Winstrol is hard to get, your vets will not have heard of it or if they have, they will argue with you about providing it, they need to obtain it from a compounding pharmacy, and expect that they will tell you that it will cause liver damage. The liver enzymes may well rise but they generally drop right back down again after the Winstrol is discontinued, and for all the cats I have used it on, I have never seen signs of liver damage.
