Re: [Felvtalk] stomatitis

2009-12-14 Thread Alice hanson
vitamin E 200 I.u.'s human dose, once a week. if your cat doesn''t like it
(mine chews it up and swallows it willingly, the only med that she will take
without a fight and she is missing 8 teeth), you can cut it and squeeze the goo
onto the affected area. This clears it up all the time for my cat. OR, there is
this expensive ointment that is usually used for dogs, that my vet gives me.
Mupirocin Ointment, 2 % 22gm. that works too. IT also lasts a LONG time. My
cat eats both dry and wet,and prefers the dry. I grind up the grilled or sliced
varieties of fancy feast wet to tiny morsel size, and they will eat it that
way. It makes the tiny cans last longer and they still have the texture that
they perfer. Hope this helps. You guys don't hear from me much because one of
your members got mean to me and smeared my name and ruined my reputation on
this site. But I am overlooking this because I DO know what helps the kitty in
this instance. I wish you and your kitty well,

  Subject: [Felvtalk] stomatitis

Hi. I'm fostering an FIV+ cat right now who has pretty bad stomatitis. We had
his teeth cleaned and 6 of them removed, and after a few weeks of antibiotics
post-dental surgery he was doing much much better-- eating a lot more, gained 3
pounds in 3 weeks, not seeming to have any mouth pain and the redness was all
gone. We stopped the antibiotics (which had been clindamycin then switched to
clavamox) and he remained ok for a few days. He then went to a potential
adoptive home with another FIV+ cat. A week later she called for us to get him
back, largely because his mouth got really bad again. He is back on Clavamox,
and has been for a few days, but is growling when he eats and can only eat wet
food that we break up into very small pieces. His gums are very inflamed again.
I had 6 FeLV+ cats, but was lucky that none had stomatitis like this. For those
of you whose cats have it or had it, what do you recommend?

  thanks,
  Michelle

Re: [Felvtalk] Re OT: DNA

2009-06-30 Thread Alice hanson

I am the 'Alice' that laurie is referring to. I too, am curious what I have
done to cause this confidential DNA. I have NO ambition to harm any cat or
person. Those thoughts and actions are alien to me. Yet I seemed to have
ruffled some feathers somewhere.

I did take in a kitty named Bella. I love/ed her with all my heart. However, my
youngest kitty, Sophie did not. My vet recommended that Bella leave my home. As
we all know, stress can trigger the leukemia to activate. I feared that the
stress was too much for all of us. Bella is a sweet, beautiful tortie cat. I
want only the best for her.

This is a public apology to Laurie et al. All of you readers may rest assured
that there will be NO retaliation of any sort. I am not a violent individual. I
love cats. I always have, and always will. I will not be adopting any kitties
from this sight nor any other site. Nor will I be going to any shelters for
more cats. My 2 are enough. And when the time comes that these 2 kitties cross
the rainbow bridge, if I decide to get another, it will come from a family
farm. So all of you can release the breaths you have been holding. And, with
this message, I will be unsubscribing to this list. I will seek education from
another source.

I hope this note has helped you all understand what triggered Laurie's message.

I leave you with my most sincere apologies,

Alice

I am so sorry, Sherry. I just wish all this dying would stop. I lost Patrick
(non-FeLV) Friday night. He was a 14 year old shelter dump (we're moving and
can't take our 14 year old cat) who I only had for a couple of months. He
seemed to be adjusting really well at my house -- but he'd been a little off
the day before, quiet and sitting in a corner. By Friday morning I knew he
wasn't going to last. I buried him next to Charlotte in the fern garden.
Losing 2 cats in less than a month is really hard. It just makes me
appreciate the ones who are still with me even more.

I had the opportunity to visit the CW Rustic Hollow Shelter in IA. Looking
for a forever home for my cats when I die. They have a excellent set up with
multiple houses/buildings/barns. Each building is heated and has air
conditioning. Most windows have an attached screened-in enclosure so the
kitties can enjoy the nice weather. There are several TVs in each building
running kitties videos.

Most of the buildings are old but it is obvious the kitties are well loved.
In addition to a paid staff, volunteers come in every day to feed the kitties
and scoop the litter boxes.

The rooms had hand me down furniture for the kitties to lounge on. It isn't
the Ritz but everything was clean. They have a board of directors and plans in
place to keep the facility going if/when something happens to the original
owners.

Most importantly they will take FeLV+ kitties and other special needs
kitties. I am having my will changed so my cats will go there when the time
comes. I sponsor one of their kitties with neurological issues.

Here is the link to their web site if anyone is interested.

of course if depends on quality of
life, but you also have to have a
realistic definition of what that means. i've found that
   many people tend to
judge quality of life in human terms, and in light of what
   they would like
to be able to provide to a housecat--and that is NOT
   necessarily what a
sanctuary can and even should be able to provide.

people often have unrealistic expectation of the places
   that take in the
unwanted, and while there are DEFINITELY enough horror
   stories to go around,
until more folks can step up and share the burden, they
   perhaps need to
revise down their own personal standards.

let's have a task force of folks who volunteer to go to
   sanctuaries nearby
where they live, and report back to the rest of us. let's
   talk with people
who've had to try to make decisions regarding how best to
   care for large
number of critters, and see what it's like to make the
   choices needed. let's
ask the cats -- you can tell happy cats when you see them,
   and plush
   surroundings are NOT the standard

 Dear Giselle,

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you how sorry I am about Pixie.
I have been thinking about her daily since your initial email and was
hopeful that this would not be necessary. I know the suffering you are going
through and from experience know that you will make it, but it will take
time. Allow yourself the time you need to grieve and know that you are not
alone; let our combined strength hold you during your time of sorrow.

Pixie was a special lady who held a large piece of your heart, and a lucky

world traveler, what a life she packed into her too short time. Go in peace
 sweet Pixie.

It is with profound sadness that I share that my sweet baby Pixie
Katzenellenbogan passed away yesterday evening. She was euthanized by a
gentle and sympathetic vet while I stroked and talked to her. I told her she
 was deeply
 loved.

Yesterday I got second and third opinions from vets I felt were genuinely
interested in Pixie (unlike the apathetic first vet) and it was terrible news
all around (see the bloodwork analysis below). In the last two days she
deteriorated quickly before my eyes despite the regimen of
syringe-administered diluted wet food prescribed by the vet. Her breathing
 had become increasingly fast and
shallow (a vet explained she was gasping for oxygen due to the anemia). She
 was crying out in
pain, even while lying still, too weak to stand up or walk, and staring
 blankly. It was heartbreaking to
see her suffering. Things she once enjoyed held no interest (favorite stinky
foods, lying in a sunbeam, toys, going out in the yard, being brushed).

I emailed the lab results from Pixie's bloodwork to a friend who's a vet in
Canada and her analysis was: There are a couple of things on her bloodwork
 that are alarming.
First of all, she is very anemic (ie very low red blood cell count). In
 conjunction
with what's going on with her high white blood cell count and platelets
 though,
I'm less concerned about the anemia itself and more concerned about an
actual leukemia (ie cancer). Her red blood cells and platelets are both very
 low
which indicates that the bone marrow is likely diseased and not
producing them properly. On top of that, according to the written
interpretation at the bottom, the red blood cells and platelets that do
exist are all showing signs of immaturity- this means that they are not
sticking around in the bone marrow long enough to mature completely
because something (ie the leukemia that is pumping out cells) is taking
up space in the bone marrow. Besides the changes in her CBC, some other
 parameters also point
towards this diagnosis: her calcium level is elevated which is often
seen in association with cancer and her CPK is high which might
indicate muscle wasting. Muscle wasting is often also seen with
 cancer.

I thought yesterday was hard (choosing to end Pixie's suffering helping her
cross over) but today is even worse. Waking up with
no Pixie at the foot of the bed, no Pixie meowing for her tuna, no
 Pixie
scampering down the stairs. Seeing her things everywhere -- food
bowls, toys, blankets, cat grass, scratching mats, the armchair she shredded,
 a brush full of orange
fur -- is devastating. HOW can I possibly live here without her?

Pixie was born in South Philadelphia in spring 2005, rescued from the
streets during a snowstorm in February 2006, and came into my life in
March 2006. She was a feisty little champ like Rocky. Pixie became a
Dutch cat in August 2006 when we moved to the Netherlands (her
permanent final home), flying Northwest so I could bring her in
the cabin, tucking her carrier under the seat in front of me, and carrying a
pop-up make-shift litterbox, food, water, vet documents, and Rescue
 Remedy.

 She was the perfect companion.

Stefania, My cat Miss Clara had that too. The vet gave her a shot of
prednisone. That helped. I give her 1 capsule of 200 I.U. vitamin E ( human

gobbles it up like candy. The vet said it was ok to give to her. You might try
it.

Also, I got my sweet Templeton from a shelter and was told that he tested
negative. Then I got Miss Clara there and was told the same. Templeton crossed
the bridge at the tender age of 1yr. I got him when he was 9 months old. Then
Miss Clara either had it or she got it from him. Now Miss Clara seems to be
doing alright and her Friend Sophie ( I knew she was positive) is doing well

big boy. Always 1st to the food and 1st for loving. If someone else was in my
lap he would climb on top of them for his loving. I've spent these last few
days just holding and loving him.

The other three seem perfectly healthy. No idea why this disease took him

I am at work and I just thought of something. I am a nurse and come
in contact with human bugs all the time. Is it logical for me to
think that I should NOT let ANY of my cats come in contact with my
clothes or shoes when I come home? Or are the human bugs not a risk
 for them.

They are usually afraid of my white clothes anyway (cats are so
funny), but it's my shoes I am more concerned with.

Hello, i don't know about cats, but i had perpherial t cell lymphoma and had
the same chemotherapy you mentioned plus a couple of others. none of them did
anything but make my hemoglobin drop to 3.4. at the end of 2 or 3 years of
chemo, stopped treatments, did no good. then a year later i went into
remission all on my own. now 5 years cancer free. i also did vitamins and
minerals along with the chemo. oncologist went along with me and even said
would write prescription if had to go into hospital. if my experience can
compare, if side effects get too bad, stop treatment. not worth the suffering.
i would try Dr. Susan Maier, a holistic vet and go with vitamin and mineral
therapy along with the chemo and then if you drop chemo, vitamins will have
Pupa in better shape than without.there is another holistic vet someone
told about. they do phone consultations. check with your state veterinarian
association for local holistic vets. others have mentioned l lysine, vitamin
c. other answers will come . dorils
hebert ferrarezzi [EMAIL PROTECTED]mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

   Olá amigos,
As already told, Pupa (8 years old) was tested FeLV+ in January/2008 and
diagnosed with lymploma (large cell type) at the submandibular lymphnode in
april. Since then, she has been treated with Staphylococcal Protein A and has
recovered very well from severe thrombocytopenia and neutropenia. The
lymphoma had an apparent short time of remission but returned in a persistent
constant slow growth.
A chemmo protocol using L-asparaginase+Prednisone was initiated and
interrupted after 3 weeks since no effect was noted. A recent ultrasonographic
image exam showed a large and encapsulated tumor. Considering that Pupa upholds
good red/white BCC, I decided to begin a more aggressive chemmo protocol (COP:
cyclophosphamide, vincristine, predinisone) two weeks ago.
The response was surprisingly: five days after the first COP session, the
tumor reduced to an unstructured mass, and at the eighth day, when the second
vincristine injection was done, no sign of it could be founded by touch
inspection. The vets were astonished such a rapid remission and we are praying
so that thus remains for a long long time. The third chemmo session is to be
tomorrow, after checking the results of her new hematological exam.
My question, I hope you could help me by previous experience or knowledge
about, is:

Should I have to shorten the protocol or at least reduce the drugs dosage
(in order to avoid the side effects that are beginning to appear)?

Any information will be very welcome,
   Many thanksSincerely...

  Hi guys,

I'm very sad today. We had made arrangements to pull a blind cat and a cat
with a cleft palate (the kitty with the cleft palate's mom went into a
nursing home). We were supposed to pick them up today. The shelter rescue
coordinator called and told us they had accidentally been killed two days
  ago.

Apparently this shelter's policy is to immediately kill all handicapped
  kitties.

I still don't understand how you can accidentally kill a cat - these cats
were safe - they had rescue - and they were still killed.

Sally, here's hoping the vet finds nothing major. I know you'll be
going crazy until you find out. Hugs to you all.

  Thanks, Sally,
Buzz seems to be breathing fast, but I am not sure how he usually
breaths. Like you said, panic mode. My husband is taking him at 10:40
am today because I am working. I want to be there so badly!

  HI Sue

I am sorry Buzz is not well. I am not sure what to tell you to ask the
  vet.
There are so many things I should have asked, but i was clueless.
  Sometimes
I think I tortured Junior needlessly because I was in panic mode. Be
  calm
and listen his life depends on you. You can check his gums to see if
  they
are pale. Anemia is common. As my vet told me b4 Junior was dx with
  Felv,
hemabartenella can be caused by just one flea. It is treatable. How is
  his
  breathing?

I will keep you and Buzz in my prayers.

  Hugs

Re: [Felvtalk] HELP!

2008-07-21 Thread Alice hanson
OMG, they are ADORABLE!!! I have two positive cats. Miss Clara just turned 3
and Sophie is about 2 1/2. Opie reminds me so much of my dear little Templeton
whom had to be PTS at the tender age of 1 yr. I KNOW he would be alive today if
I hadn't had such an arrogant, ignorant, and negative vet. I no longer go to
him and don't recommend him to anyone else either. But I live in Iowa. I can't
come to you, and I just don't see how you would be able to come this far to me.
Have you checked around for a shelter? There is
www.wittykitties.orghttp://www.wittykitties.org/ in my area and also
www.cwrustichollow.orghttp://www.cwrustichollow.org/ in Nashua, Iowa. The
latter doesn't usually take kittens. If you could get them to witty kitties, I
could go there to pick him up. If Opie has been spoken for, any one of the
others would be welcome.

Julie, sorry I can not help. I am overwhelmed with positive kittens
already. Just wanted to say they are adorable, thank you for caring and I hope
you find a forever home for them.

Hi Everyone, I am a volunteer with a new (in operation for 1 year)
rescue group in Upstate NY. I have a litter of kittens, now 13 weeks, who
tested positive last week for FeLV. I had them in with another litter..I know
this was wrong, but it was certain death for them if I did not do this..I took
a chance and it was a bad one. The others have all tested negative, but will
be re-tested regardless..The positive litter had 1 kitten that was negative and
4 positive. 1 also was tested negative 2 weeks ago, but passed away in the
hospital from a bacterial overload. These kittens are so healthy and
happy..they are the most loving bunch I have ever known. I am desperate to try
and find them homes. They have been separated from the negatives and are
temporarily being kept in someones spare room. This is not a permanent
solution obviously. I am hoping and praying that when they are retested that
they may go negative..but our vet tells us that is very unlikely and I should
look for homes for them where they can be only kitties or with other FeLV +
cats. We have 2 from last year that we were never able to find homes for..they
became permanent fosters...this is not doable for us now as we have no foster
that can keep them indefinitely. I am reaching out in hopes that some of you
may be interested in adopting one of these beautiful ans healthy babies. they
are fully vetted and have been altered as well. I would be willing to
transport them anywhere as long as it is a safe and loving home! Please let me
know if you can help or if you have any suggestions on who could help. They do
not deserve to die..they deserve to have loving homes! Here is a link to their
pictures: a

Re: Please add Tucker to CLS

Oh, I am SO SORRY to hear of your Tucker's loss. I Know just how you feel, as I
have had to send my poor little Templeton over the rainbow bridge too. I think
of him every single day. I have 2 other FeLV+ cats and they are my children.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

This morning I had to have Tucker PTS. He was not FeLV+ but he had
Stomatitis and all his teeth were removed last Nov. My vet though what was
happening to him had something to do with the immune problems associated with
that. He said the root of the problem was in the bone marrow. I asked them to
take some marrow after he was gone so I will know more about what happened. I
only hope that Tuckers sickness had nothing to do with letting my FeLV + out
with the other cats. Even though I had them all vaccinated, that fear is
there.
The vet tried all he could think of but this morning his problems were so
serious that the vet said anything they could try would have very little chance
of working and also be painful to him.
Tucker always slept right next to me, curled up on my neck if I sat on the
couch, and I have a cat bed here on the desk next to the computer where he
would keep me company. He was a large long haired grey tabby. We called him
the great fluffy hunter of dirty socks because he would drag them and
present them to you like it was a major catch. He was such a loveable boy and
will be so very missed.
