2007-01-05 Thread Helene Hand
Hi, all,

I don't communicate nearly as often as I should, but I read the posts and
keep up with you guys. My 16 year old siamese, Delilah,is not eating well
at all- her son, Sammy died this summer as a result of FELV-he lived to be
15, though!!! with many thanks to advice and love on this list- so she is
still grieving for him. She only weighs 6 pounds and is very petite.I give
her any canned food she will eat-she has sworn off of her dry science diet,
etc. At this point, she only likes certain few fancy feast turkey and
chicken mixtures, and (people) bumblebee tuna, and beechnut baby chicken and
turkey and beef meats. (no onion). Canned chicken, too. I have an array of
foods in the cabinet for her!! Also likes Tyson's already cooked chicken
breasts which we share.

The vet has suggested cyproheptadine (periactin- an antihistimine) as an
appetite stimulant 2 mg. twice daily. She is also on tapizole 2 mg. 2
times daily for hyperthyroidism. Her coat looks great, now, and no knobby
spine!! She absolutely hates being pilled. I have to mummy her. I am trying
the pill pouches, -she hates them,too- I have the tapizole in pill form,
also in a transdermal gel, but her ears are looking inflamed on the inside
from the gel, so stopped that. Now I have ordered the tapizole in a
suspension from an on line vet. pharmacy in Texas. I have a good
compounding pharmacy locally, but they do not make the tapizole in a
suspension.

My question is, has anyone tried periactin for an appetite stimulant?? She
has been on it 4 days and is eating better, I think. Are there any side
effects? Any suggestions?

Stumbled across this link by accident, and found alot of little nuggets of
info., so wanted to share. Helene

Thank you both, Phaewryn and Belinda(Hi! Belinda, I remember you
well-you added Sam's name to the Rainbow Bridge list this past July; thank
you...)anyhow, .I am concerned that the periactin might cause drowsiness,as
some antihistimines do in people. Sam was on winstrol for a long time for
his appetite; it is an anabolic steroid, and worked well. I frankly did not
think about it for Delilah before ordering the periactinHelene

I've never tried periactin. I do believe that injected valium (I'm pretty
sure it's valium I am thinking of) is a great appetite stimulant, but...
it's an injection, so it's something you have to go to the vet for, thus,
not good for anything long term. I do think you should try it, you don't
really have anything to lose. The next step would be either syringe feeding
or tube feeding.

Why would anyone take the hard way out?
The door? No thanks, that would be the easy way out. I'm jumping out the

2006-08-19 Thread Helene Hand
Wendy; I started Delilah (Sam's 16 year old mother) on Tapisole 5 mg. two
times a day two months ago. Unless I can get it in on the first try while
she is mummied in a towel, there's no need to try again. She was diagnosed
at that time with hyperthyroidism. Her T-level was 13, and I belive normal
is 4. (?) I knew about the transdermal gel; my vet mentioned it. Is it
really is absorbed well on the inside of the ear? I know she feels much
better, her coat is shiny, and she has put on a little weight but what a
struggle.!!!

I know I should not compare, but giving Sam five meds a day including
injections 2X a week, and subcu fluids, was easier. He did not like it,
but he let me do it for 7 years.I am thankful it was not
Delilah...(He could read my mind and know when I was thinking about
giving them and run and find a nice hiding place!!!)

Anyhow, I am anxious to hear more about the gel. I hope Tonya lets everyone
know about Popeye

If Popeye is hyper-T, the meds can reverse some of the damage to the heart
if the heart problems are related to the hyper-T. You should use the
transdermal gel (rubbed into the ear) because of the difficulty in giving
Popeye meds. That's what Julie gets and she doesn't even know she's getting
meds.

I worked very late tonight and came home to find my Popeye very
lethargic. He would not eat. I am taking him to the vet in the
morning, but I think it may be his time. He is the cat who has high blood
pressure and is going blind that I can't pill. I think he may have
congestive heart failure as he seems to be wheezing when he breathes. I
syringed him some water and tuna juice, but I just don't want to put him through
going to the emergency vet. I'm going to take him in tomorrow and hope for
the best, but be prepared to let him go. :(

which made me cry.. but I am sure that Naomi will connect them on spiritual
level so that they will also be together even after her

Now, Naomi is free from a body
which limited her to do many things..I love her soul and love her little

arms,, and watching her beautiful eyes… but I know that I won’t have to miss
her soul because it is right besides me now no matter where I go… Naomi has
taught me a lot of lessons.. she taught me not to be afraid of “pain” --- and
how to deal with the pain and it’s not everyone’s intension to be here
for a long time… I have become a bit stronger because of Naomi…her vitality
taught me to be as strong as she is..

Again, thank you for all your

Some of the newest docs don't prescribe it cause it has been used for so

most of them have the tendency to make you feel groggy! Get an RX and try

your messages to my husband at work yesterday. We paid a chiropractor $3500
yesterday for 20 sessions on a spinal decompression machine for lower back
pain, a chair for excersizes he can bring home, and a few other items.
I hope this helps my husband, because at the rate he's going, he won't be
able to continue to work if this doesn't help. I'll let all of you know how
it worked.
If it doesn't work, hopefully we won't have to worry about pre-existing as
he hasn't seen a medical doctor about the problem. I wanted to ask Mary
Christine about parafon-forte and soma. Are these both medicines OTC, or
does he need a prescrip for them? I have been coaxing my husband each time
he has an episode to try to relax and not tense up, but it's hard for him
not to. Thank you again for helping us out!!! As always, this site has
proved invaluable.

Need advice on herniated disk

it's funny, helene, because while the parafon forte helped with the pain,
it was the soma that enabled me to get back to work after my first two
surgeries--so much depends on one's own individual response to a medication.
soma NEVER made me drowsy or feel drugged; it almost felt as if it energized me
by removing the constant strain of trying to deal with the pain. yet i had a
housemate who used my soma as her addiction of choice.

it may also have to do with what they're learning about people with chronic
pain and their reaction to meds in general--that, for example, people with high
levels of chronic pain do not respond to opiates the same way people without it
do--that things like vicodin and others do NOT tend to create dependence as they
do for people without chronic pain. i know for myself, that if i take a vicodin
in the morning when i wake up, it enables me to make it through the day without
another one yet when i've had to take it for an acute condition, unrelated
to the back problems (like, oh, having all my teeth pulled last month, or for a
second-degree burn a few months ago), half of one knocked me out!

robaxin is another old-school drug that many people had good results with
in the past. like soma and parafon forte, they're generics so no one makes a lot
of money on them, and thus drug reps don't push them--never forget that docs get
almost no pharmaceutical education in school, and way too many never do more
than take the word of the drug reps for what they should prescribe.

of course it's hard to not tense up when the pain is most intense! i
learned to remind myself that the pain is coming from an irritated nerve, and
the longer i do things to keep it irritated (ie, walk, move, you know, those
sorts of things), the longer it was gonna take for the nerve to have a chance to
calm down. you just have to STOP and let it be. something else i finally figured
out, after about three years, was how TIRING it is to be in pain--it takes a lot
of energy to function with such an insult to your system going on. so getting a
medication that works for the individual, and doing gentle stuff like stretching
exercises all the time, really makes a difference.

other little accommodations: experiment with pillow and supports for the
car and for furniture in the house. i can tell within 5 minutes if a chair or a
bed or a couch or a car seat is gonna kill me--and i'd rather be on the floor
than in one of those that's gonna make things worse. a simple pillow of the
right consistency can make a HUGE difference! talk to your chiro about
prescribing an obus forme chair support--has an adjustable lumbar pillow, you
can carry it from car to chair to friend's houses--i've taken it on camping
trips! i'm still using the one i got back in 78.

good luck, and keep us informed...

I have one-ruptured disk-
cannot be resolved with surgery, unfortunately, and scoliosis-I have
used parafon forte muscle relaxants for years. (RX) Old drug; good; no
sleepiness with it. Also Lortab (RX) for the really bad times.you
can get naprosyn (SP?) muscle relaxant over the counter. You just double
the amount indicated every 4-6 hrsfor prescripton strength.Careful about
driving. I have found 2 very helpful
things- physical therapy with a good therapist, and exercises every day as soon
as the acute pain subsides. (Prescribed by therapist.) If nothing else
right now, walk and keep mobile. Massage therapy good too. I could
go on and on, but I think that is enough. Helene

Hi Helene,

I haven't ever used Rescue Remedy or Feliway, but many people here think
they both work great to reduce stress. Time and your love will be what
heals Delilah. Here's to a speedy recovery for her heart.

I agree with the freedom. It's not much of a life in

  Chris,Please remind your friend of
what we say on the list, "when it dries, it dies". I am convinced there
would be no added danger to the other cats if they shared a space, at
different times of the day. That said, there are never any
guarantees. That's why so many vets advocate pts, or segregation.
At 16 years of age, I think the risks to the other cats are of far less
concern than Mischief being cooped up in a cage 24/7 for the rest of her
life. If she can give those two geriatric buddies some freedom and a
better quality of life for whatever time they have left, I'm sure they would
be grateful. In any sanctuary situation there is always the concern over
cross-contaminations. I don't, however, think there is any more reason
for concern in this instance. Does she intend to test Mischief
again? I'm not sure what "light positive" truly indicates as far as
prognosis goes. I do know that I've heard of many cats that test "light
pos", re-testing neg at a later.Wish her luck and blessings from

RE: Off Topic - Rocket, our Great Dane, is gone

2006-07-30 Thread Helene Hand

Amy, I am so sorry about your sweet Rocket...I had
a 10 mo. old baby (not the same as a newborn) and a doberman puppy at the same
time. The saving grace was a large crate for Bishop (the dobe.) in the
kitchen. And lots and lots of mild disinfectant-but no spray cans!!
and paper towels for the kitchen floor accidents.at least we had a
fenced back yard.I think it depends on how badly you want
anotherGreat Daneat this time . You probably will get crazy alot,
but at least your heart won't hurt nearly as much . Make a written list of
pros and cons before you decide...and at least wait a week. Is this
your first baby? They take alot more time than you would
think

Amy,

I am so sorry to hear about Rocket. I know it seems quiet at your
house right now. As far as getting a puppy I think I would wait.
Having a baby is such a hard job by itself that I don't think I'd want to take
on a new puppy at the same time.

If you do decide to get a dog I recommend you get a very calm breed, older
dog who won't mind having his tail pulled, his ears pulled, and a crawling baby
getting into his dog dish!

My sister had a baby with 3 dogs. One was afraid of the baby and
stayed out of his sight as much as possible. The other tried to bite him
(but she was a little 18 year old yorkie with no teeth left. lol) The 3rd
dog was a basset, beagle, jack russell mix who licked all over the baby and
played with him and let him pull his tail and ears, ride on his back etc..
Just a very easy going dog. You have to be careful because children don't
understand about hurting animals until they reach a certain age.

Hey
everyone,

I know it hasn't
been that long ago that I reported that we had lost our Miss Kitty to
FeLV. Now, not even a month later we've lost Clack. He was 12 years
old and I'm pretty sure he was negative. He lived outside with his brother
Click.

He was acting a bit
abnormal yesterday and this morning. I went out to give him some canned
food that he dearly loves and he ran off into the woods away from me. When
I got home tonight, he was lying on his side under our van with his mouth open
panting. I thought he was already gone, but he was still breathing.
I rushed him to the vet and they told us that he was not responding to the
oxygen, that he had a mass in his chest and that his pupils weren't responding
to light. They recommended PTS since they didn't think he would make it
overnight.

This has happened so
suddenly. I'm numb with shock. Clack and his brother, Click,
arrivedas small kittens when their mom showed up in our yard. They
were all feral, but we managed to tame Mama Kitty and Click. We were never
able to hold Clack or scratch behind his ears until tonight.I held
him and told him that it was OK if he needed to go. We're pretty sure that
he waited until we got home and made sure that he was some place we could see
him. He could have just gone off into the woods to
die.

This is never easy.
We'rehaving him cremated. Now he's with his mother at Rainbow
Bridge. She passed away a few years ago very suddenly. Now Click is
left without his brother and Mama.

Could you please add
Clack to the Candlelight Service as a non positive? He was a black kitty
with a white spot on his chest.

Thanks so much for
listening. This group has been there for me a lot in the past 3 years
(since I discovered you all after we rescued Miss Kitty her
kittens).

Procrit is used to boost red blood cell production, so if that were
helping maybe the IR would too. I know there has been success with anemia
using it. Michelle can tell you more, and others have posted sites about
it. I'm sure you can Google it and come up with some stuff. From
what I understand about it, (I haven't used it, but I did order some from
Revival), it is a bacteria that is administered IV, (Cindy and Smokey on the
list used it subq with good results), that helps the body by launching an attack
against it and consequently boosting the immune system to fight whatever else
might be going on. I know one of the side effect warnings include temp
fever spike. I think Michelle said she's given it to two or three of her
kitties and only one had the problem with fever. Another member, Kerry
Roach had gotten it to try for her kitty, Bandy, but if she's reported back on
it, I haven't seen her post. Here's the link to order: http://www.revivalanimal.com/product.asp?pn=31-020ss=immunoregulin
It's also called EqStim, (marketed for use in horses), but it's the same
med. If after discussing it with your vet, you think it might help, you
can order it direct without a prescription. They can overnight it to you

RE: Special Need List Add-On: Madison Lee

2006-07-13 Thread Helene Hand
Madison Lee is certainly in my thoughts and prayerssounds
sucessful!!! Madison's surgery was only $20.00 more than Sam's blood work
this past week, and Delilah's blood work last week!! Is Madison Lee a
Southern Kitty name, by any chance? Helene

Subject: Re: Special Need List Add-On: Madison Lee

Hi Everyone,

I called the vet's office yesterday around 4:30 P.M.
for an update on Madison's status and am happy to report that she not only
survived the general anesthetic (isoflurane gas), but the operation itself!

Due to Madison's age I was SO worried about the use of anesthetic, but she
pulled through with flying colors.

We picked up Madison from the hospital this afternoon and despite her
condition, she acts perfectly normal.
As soon as she saw me she pratcially jumped into my arms and when we touched
she instantly started to purr and kneed.

Here is the breakdown of the current events:

07-08-06 Extreral Examination- $15.00 dollars.

07-12-06 Amputation Surgery of Tumor- $80.00 dollars.
07-12-06 Lab Histopathology (biopsy of tumor)- $38.00.
07-12-06 Radiograph 10 X 12 (X-ray of chest)- 35.00.
07-12-06 Clavamox Drops (an antibiotic)- 14.00.

07-13-06 Current Total $182 (which is NOT a bad price considering we are
talking about possible cancer. I which treatment for human cancer was
this cheap!)

Keep in mind that this is just a running total, because the postoperative
appointment will be an additional cost as well as any treatment for cancer
IF she has it.

Madison's postoperative exam is scheduled for Saturday July the 22nd. That
is exactly ten (10) days from her surgery date. Our veterinarian will remove
her sutures then.

Unlike an invasive spay operation which requires dissolvable sutures,
Madison's sugery was external which required non-dissolvable sutures, hence
the postoperative appointment.

Our veterinarian used a vertical incision which is approximating three (3)
inches in length and resulted in seventeen (17) individual stitches.

Although Madison was discharged withOUT any pain medication she does not
seem to mind. As soon as we returned home she quickly inspected every room
in the house to ensure that everything was the way SHE left it (such a
queen) and then curled up on the back of the couch (her reserved spot) to
take a nap. If she understands the severity of the situation, she clearly
does not care.

In addition to the surgery and biopsy our veterinarian took an X-ray of her
chest to confirm if there was any cancer cells in that area. There was not,
her chest cavity can back clean and our veterinarian feels confident that
the tumor itself was contained.

The word contained is cancer jargon for meaning that a small portion of
tissue (usually an inch) surrounding the tumor was clean or cancer-free.

In amputation surgery of a possible cancerous tumor, surgeons typically
remove some good tissue along with the tumor in hopes that ALL of the
cancerous cells have been extracted from the body; thus containing the
cancer.

This technique is common practice in surgical oncology i.e. colectomies,
lumpectomies, mastectomies, etc. as conventional cancer treatments.

However, the biopsy report from the diagnostic laboratory pathology
department is expected to be received on or before her postoperative
appointment.

It will be then that our veterinarian will be able to tell us if the tumor
was benign or malignant and IF the tumor was malignant what TYPE of cancer
it is.

If Madison is dignosed with cancer we will discuss a course of treatment
i.e. chemotherapy, radiation-therapy, immunotherapy, new/innovative
therapies, etc. then. As of right now, we are just focused on Madison
recovering from the surgery itself.

She made it over the first hurdle (the surgery) now if she can just get over
the next (the cancer.) We are not out of the woods yet. Please continue to
keep my sweet Madison Lee in your thoughts and prayers. We need all the
positive healing vibes that we can get.

Thank you to everyone who has emailed replys and posted their well-wishes.
We sincerely appreciate it.

Hugs, Lora

Sammy and interferon

2005-12-01 Thread Helene Hand

Hi!1 I
seem to mostly lurk, too, now that Sam seems so well, but I have a concern to
share with all of you. I do love this list, and there was a timeall
of youdefinitely saved Sammy's life
with your love and advice. Thank you for
everything you have done for us.

Okay- Sammy, my 15
year old siamese, and his mother Delilah, 16, came to live with me in
1993. In July of 1999 Sam developed FELV and almost died. He
was so sick. Over the next few months he lost down to 7 pounds and I maintained
him on IV boluses, a series of Acemannan shots, oral pettinic daily, Vit. B12
subcu., interferon orally,7 dayson-7 off-winstrol
orally, procrit s.c. weekly, special foods, including baby meats, dry foods (4
choices!) lots and lots of love and prayers constantly. For a yearit
was touch and go.Today, he weighs about 16 pounds, looks and feels great, is
definitely the AlphaCat of the household, and has been in
remissionand asymptomatic since
2000. Coat is shiny,he is very
playful, etc.

My question is this:
Does anyone know of any detrimental side effects of long-term interferon
therapy? There is no need to ask my vet, although wonderful, he lets me
call the shots, as he really doesn't know... Sam has been on interferon since
2000. One cc orally for 7 days, then off 7 days.So that is 15 cc a month.I sure
don't want to rock the boat, but I know that the interferon causes a degree of
dehydration.Anything else? I would like a source of
info., and would appreciate anybody's input. He still is on the pettinic daily,
the winstrol weekly, and the Vit. B12 subcu. weekly. I discontinued the
procritsubcu. a year
ago.

My wonderful boy
seems to be doing fine; but I remind myself to remember that every day is so
good for him, but could change in an instant. I don't take anything for
granted.

Thanks!
Guys! Helene

  I have two FELV+ who
are 7 5+ respectively. I did not know of their diagnosis until
last year when they were 6 4. I have 3 non-pos who lived with the 6 year
old since kittenhood are still neg. Its not an automatic death
sentence particularly for adult cats. You will get a lot of good, more
detailed advice from the members of this group. What made the vet test
for FELV? Is she displaying any symptoms Diagnosis on my 7 year old was
made when I brough her in for not eating general listnessness.
Blood test revealed low wbc led to ELISSA IFA tests to
confirm. She had series of immuno-regulin twice for the same problem
is fine (a real porko that one!). My 5 year old was a stray who
spent the first few years of his life on the street he has been symptom
  free.

My cat Misty has just been
diagnosed by my vet as positive for feline leukaemia and the vet has told me
that there are no real treatments for this condition and that now she has been
positively diagnosed she is unlikely to live longer than a year. I have
looked through at various sites and am totally confused by the amount of
information out there, HELP!!! Can anyone give me any no nonsense advice
with regard to holistic treatment availability or indeed any advice. I
have been looking at Willard's water and colloidal silver. Does anyone
have any information on these or anything that might help her, she is only
approximately two years old and I have only had her for six months as
she was abandoned by her previous owner.

For the first week of it's release, all anyone had was the
small bags. Try calling around now, my local vet got the bigger bags in this
  past Thursday.

I'm not sure what Mythic is allergic to, I never did the
entire allergy panel testing on him, but this seems to be helping, and IF it
cures him, I WILL know it was the grains!

My "sensitive" guy puked it back up and had the runs for the
first 3 days, but he soon adjusted, and seems very happy with it now. I
probably did the switch too quickly, but I didn't want to buy another bag of
the old stuff, so I just immediately did it 1/2 and 1/2 instead of going in
smaller increments. He's right here beside me now, happy as can be, looking
  completely satisfied.
  Jenn

  ~~~I've
  gotten a couple of bags too. Unfortunately, the only size bag
  available around here seems to be the 2lb for $8. I'll have to
  special order anything larger. Everyone seems to love it. I've
  been putting small bowls of it next to their regular dry, (Solid Gold),
  and they go for it as if I've put out canned tuna! Getting rid of
  all the unnecessary grains has got to be better for them. I wish
  they had left out the fruit and veggies too, but oh well. I still
  can't let Gypsy, (my IBD girl), have any dry, she has to stay exclusively
  on raw. It certainly is making me feel better about feeding dry to
  my other furballs though.If your "bald food-allergy" cat, (poor
  baby), is allergic to grain, then it makes sense that he's (?) doing
  better.
