If a cat tests negative for feline leukemia why does the vet recommend a second
test in two months?
What are the possibilities of the same cat testing positive the second time?

Re: [Felvtalk] new to the list and to FeLV (litter eating)

2010-04-17 Thread Reyna Castano
The cat is eating litter because it's anemic. A cat I rescued used to eat
litter too. He would also lick the ground a lot. Then one day he just stopped
eating and wouldn't move. I took him to the vet and found out that he was
severely anemic and felv+.

 Hello

I've just joined your list and have what might be an odd, maybe even really
odd, question.  I looked through the archives a bit but couldn't find a similar
thread, so I apologize if there has been and I missed it.

I work for a program that provides support (food pantry, vet vouchers, pet
wellness clinics, education and in-home care) to folks living with HIV and AIDS
to allow them to keep their pets at home with them when the financial and
physical constraints of their illness might not otherwise allow them to.  A
number of our people have FeLV and FIV+ cats and while I'm somewhat familiar
with FIV, having a FIV+ cat myself, I know nothing about FeLV and I'd like to
learn from the list how to help my members better care for their + cats.

I received a call from a client who is concerned about her FeLV cat - Precious
has been somewhat more lethargic than usual but, most disturbingly to my client
is that she has started, out of the blue, to eat cat litter.  She wonders if
this is something that FeLV cats do when there is a specific issue going on -
is she looking for nutrients she isn't getting?  Is she trying to calm some GI,
oral, other upset?

My first thought with positive cats is to bring them to the vet, but, in this
case, my client does not have the resources personally and she has exhausted
her benefits through our program.  I am working all the places I can think of
to try to find her some financial support ultimately, but in the meantime, I
wonder if nayone out there has seen this sort of behavior and what it might
mean?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

Best,

d

Hi Michael,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.
Is your son well? I hope he is.

I promise to do all I can to help you and your family. You are a very kind
person and GOD rewards those that help others.

For all those that don't know about Michael Johnson or Second Chance Meows, let
me tell you that Michael is a very kind human being. Last year he took in
Snowball - Felv+, the 8th member of his cat family. The very cute white Siamese
mix with baby blue eyes. Remember him and/or me? He along with Susan Hoffman
helped me start Snowball's fundraiser and arranged transportation. Thanks to
Michael, Snowball has a home and a family that loves him very much.

Hello everyone,

I spoke to Michael a few minutes ago and Snowball is doing great. He is getting
along pretty well with the family and other cats. I'm so happy. Michael
will post pictures soon.

Before Snowball I knew nothing about rescue. I'm glad he came into my life and
made me aware of the harsh lives of stray and abandoned cats.

I admire all the people who do rescue because although is rewarding it is also
sad.  I cried when Snowball left. I miss him so much.
It's hard to let go but we have to do what is best for the animal. That is the
one thing about rescue that I don't like is saying Goodbye.

He had quite the adventure along the way, with the first overnight in LA and
the second overnight near Sacramento.  At each stop he got a private room,
catered meals, catnip.  And he shared a turkey sandwich with the truck driver
who took him from Bakersfield to Sacramento.  He was a great traveler, not at
all stressed out.  I think he may have actually enjoyed his little road trip.

We just PTS one of our geriatric cats on Monday.  I had a little stash of
torb-val syrup on hand and gave that to her Sunday and Monday morning.  She had
been in renal failure for more than a year but somewhere between Friday night
and Saturday morning it looks like she had a stroke.  It looked like she was
paralyzed on one side of her body.  On Saturday she was still drinking water
but not eating, on Sunday she did not want water either.

I was surprised she was still with us Monday morning, actually raising her head
when I came to check on her.  She was still present in her body but just
barely.  I'm sure that it was time to help her to the bridge.  I have no idea
how stressful a natural death might have been for her.

We almost PTS last fall but then some antibiotics and fluids rallied her and
she had 6 or 8 really good months, frail though she was.  Last fall would have
been much too soon but I worry that Sunday would have been better than Monday
to PTS. It was a matter of vet availability and cost.  Hate it when decisions
have to be made on that basis.

i don't know about klonopin, but i DO
know that valium can have a
paradoxical effect in cats, and make them very agitated,
 which is clearly
NOT the intended effect. i've worried about that ever since
 i heard a number
of folks, including vets, mention it.

i would think, tho, that if you've got a good relationship
 with your vet,
and a cat near time, they might be willing to prescribe
 something to help?

in my experience, and i hope this doesn't sound too scary
 or morbid, when
they reach the point of having trouble breathing, they
 don't really seem to
be there any longer. it's as if they have already left,
 their spirits, as
least, and all that's left is their no-longer-needed body.
 i find that i can
really tell when they are not present, and have gone
 on--i always tell
them about the wonderful cloak room at the bridge where
 they get to pick out
a brand-new body, in whatever color or breed or pattern
 they'd like, that
they don't need to worry about leaving the old body behind,
 that it served
them well, but there's a new, healthy one waiting... i see
 the last shudders
and gasps as just the last wisps of their souls slipping
 out of the dwelling
that's no longer necessary for that part of their journey,
 not as something
 they are consciously suffering through.

2009-08-04 Thread Reyna Castano

Hello Everyone,

Snowball is FeLV+. He is a three year old male with the most beautiful skye
blue eyes I have ever seen. Unfortunately, keeping him is not possible because
not only am I allergic to cats but my mother and brothers all suffer from
asthma. Otherwise, I would not be in the situation I am in with Snowball. I

just give the cat to anyone. A lot of people do not care about animals and do
horrible things to them.

Re: [Felvtalk] Home For Life Animal Sanctuary in western Wisconsin

2009-07-16 Thread Reyna Castano
I rescued an FeLV cat and after weeks and weeks of searching for a sanctuary I
found two that can take him in. Home for Life and 'Not So' Purrrfect Angels in
Fresno (CA) are the two places I found. The issue with Home for Life is that is
too far from CA and I can't take him there personally. Therefore, I would like
to speak to someone who personally know the place. I need to know if HFL is a
good place for my FeLV kitty.
Purrrfect Angels is only a 3 hour drive from L.A. but the FeLV room is very
small. It can only house 6 cats. Right now they have two. With my cat it will
be three.

Reyna,

Are you surrendering a cat to Home for Life?

I assumed you knew about them from personal experience because you mentioned in
an
e-mail that you knew the place personally.

Maybe is too much to ask but can I have the e-mail of the people you know that
have taken cats to HFL? I want to speak to someone that personally knows Home
for Life.

i haveno contacts in CA so can't help there, but what if you contacted Hill
Science Diet.  maybe they would/could come up with something.  other cat food
companies too.  PetsMart is always talking about their charitable work.  if
there is one nearby, they might be of some help.  i could send 10 or so if that
would help.  need an address.  dorlis

[Felvtalk] My kitty has a new home!!!

2009-07-15 Thread Reyna Castano
Hello,

After weeks and weeks of searching for a sanctuary in CA that takes in FeLV
cats, I finally found one for the FeLV kitty I rescued. I'm very happy yet sad
because saying goodbye will be hard.
I will miss him.

He has ben accepted to
'Not So' Purrrfect Angels
A non-profit humane
organization and sanctuary for felines
located at 7312 East Church Ave., Fresno, CA 93727.
http://www.purrrfectangels.org/index.html

Do any of you know about this place?  Have you visited?

A donation is required and I have around $110.00. I spend all of my college
savings on his vet visits so this is all I have left.
I would like to give at least $250.00.
Please spread the word about the fundraiser page I create it for
Snowball. I will send the link to Felvtalk.
Anything is welcome.

Thanks

[Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -Los Angeles, CA- I need to find him a Sanctuary

2009-07-11 Thread Reyna Castano
I found a cat on my front porch about two weeks ago.
When I found him he looked very sick. He did not move nor open his eyes.
I took him to the vet and sadly he tested positive for the FeLV virus. He also
had a severe case of anemia and needed a blood transfusion quick.
He had the blood transfusion, was given medications and is doing much better
now. Now, he is playful, active and full of energy. He doesn't look sick at all.
He is not fixed ( this is how I found him and the vet said to wait until he is
strong enough to neuter him) and I don't know if he has ever been vaccinated,
in the case that he had owners before.

Keeping the FeLV cat is not possible because I have a cat of my own and she's
negative.
As a low-income, full-time college student I'm finding it extremely difficult
to care for him and provide for him (I don't have the time and money necessary
to do so).
I already spend all of my college savings on him.Do I regret it? No way! I
would do it again.
I just can't keep this up because I don't have the means necessary to do so. He
needs high-quality food and I don't have enough to buy for two pets. I'm having
trouble feeding my own cat now. Also, I don't have a cage to keep him in and
the wood house I made for him is not secure nor to his liking. He has escaped
before and GOD knows where he goes. What if he catches another disease or
infects other cats.

I've asked for help and have contacted animal shelters to borrow a cage, for
free food, etc, but I need so much that some can't help me or can only help
with very little. I appreciate all that I have been given but the cat still
needs more. I'm still looking for a cage.

Friends and family say that I took on a huge responsibilty that I shouldn't of
but now I'm involved and I have no choice but to find this kitty a new, nice
and safe home. I can't abandon him now. I will not do this.

I have been looking for a sanctuary in CA that takes in FeLV cats but all are
full and others have not gotten back to me yet. Who knows if they ever will.
Please help with any place that might be able to assist this cat and me.
I named him Kitto and he is so loving and playful. He needs a place to call his
home. Please help him.
