Briefly I chose to foster 3 kittens with significant conjunctivitis from
the local pound about 2 weeks and 2 days ago. That was on a Saturday. I
knew come Monday they would be killed. I have spent significant $ of my $
  by choice..

I have been doing rescue work for 35 years and I've seen many eyes that
were severely infected. Having one eye doesn't seem to affect their
ability to get adopted, in fact people often feel they want to help cats
with one eye or minus a leg. My neighbor just adopted a totally blind
cat. I couldn't get her to take one of mine (I have way too many cats)
but she adopted this blind cat from the vet's office!

I still have a cat who is blind in one eye and another with chronic
herpes infection. His eyes must be wiped out every day to keep them
from being goopy. They are permanent cats at our home. There is no
cure for the virus as antibiotics have been tried, but will not work
on viral infections only bacterial infections.

All tested negative for FIV, fe leukemia and heart worm this past Saturday. I
chose to vaccinate them including fe leukemia this past Saturday.

Maya Mia is about 2 months old. Her left eye is swollen. The eye is cloudy
and has become vascularized. There is no evidence of pus. Her right eye
had/has a corneal ulcer. There is a small amount of cloudiness. Two vets have
recommended to remove the left eye.

The first vet backed off that it was an emergency when I asked her what if re:
the corneal ulcer eye.

Two local rescue groups say they have good fortune re: placing kittens with
less than optimal vision.

My question to you is, what has been your experience re: letting nature take
it's course. she happily and accurately leaps from atop a cage to one 2.5

The kittens contemplated future is with an area SPCA. Their doors are not open
to them at the present. They would be adopted into forever homes from the
SPCA or stay at the facility if not adopted..

The first vet advised me to use opthalmic antibiotic drops for the present. I
had used opthalmic ointment on both eyes for 10 days.

THANK YOU FOR THIS FASCINATING DISCUSSION.

I want to come at this from a different viewpoint - -related to intestinal
issues

You have all read about Yahmuna here (FIV+) with chronic respiratory issues.
Yes, she has gingivitis. Yes, most recently she was on a 2 week course of
doxycycline (that was in Jan - - nothing since).

When she came to my patio Nov 2010 she looked pregnant. She had tape worm, . .
.

The week following my adopting her back from the SPCA (Jan 2012) she was wormed
with a topical wormer with amazing results. I came back with strongid. My
assessment is that she still has worms.

any comments re: stomatitis/gingivitis and worms?

any advise?

Thanks

[Felvtalk] off subject but feline

2012-04-01 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Jean Feraca of WI public radio uses a word unremembered by me which describes
people unknown to each other involved in a work on behalf of God.

The recent Purina Rally to Rescue magazine featured an article Loved and
Found about volunteers using animal allies to find strayed beloveds.

with that . . .

Rheis, a petite, long-haired talkative tortie had lived outside for some
months. Sherry fed this cat who had arrived in the rough neighborhood by
unknown means.

Peggy Satterwhite of Vance County SPCA and I trapped this likely-to-be pregnant
cat on March 5. Rheis came home with me. Rheis went to SNAP - NC and was
aborted and spayed; we visited the vet, visited Sherry who was certain she did
not want Rheis as a dependent, and visited the Wake County SPCA who put Rheis
on their waiting list for their adoption center. Rheis lives with us in a one
bedroom apartment - - separated for health reasons - - from the heart of the
home i.e Scrumptious and Mama and Pookashay and Shallie Marie and Luscious.
There is usually a temporary, non-paying feline house guest in what seems to be
a convalescent center.

Karin who lives in the same apartment building as we but on the back side and
above ground level wanted Rheis to meet Toby. Toby, her 14 year-old rescue,
might be willing to have an additional housemate. Karin picked up Rheis
Saturday afternoon. No fur flew. I went up late in the afternoon to pick up
Rheis before Karin left for mass. Rheis wanted no part of being caught. I
left and revisited after Karin's return. Rheis was much more social now. She
moved back and forth from the cat-safe patio where Toby was hanging out. She
allowed herself to be petted. The revised plan was that Rheis would spend the
night. She had been sharing food and the litter box.

11:17 p.m. call from Karin. Rheis had exited the patio to the ground. I
dressed and went to . . .Karin had spoken to a visitor who went for a
flashlight. (the vistior called me by name, recalling an incident with a
kitten at the dialysis center). The visitor saw eyes staring back at her from
the dark woods. Karin and the visitor went into the woods. Harold and James,
the outside ferals, knew something was going on and monitored the activities.
Toby was talking from the patio.

Rheis had shown herself to be tame with a big motor. She lived in a double
cage unreachable to her housemates and at night in the bathroom. No Rheis.

I went home and turned out my heart. Yahmuna (FIV+) and I went to bed. I
pondered what I was going to say to the SPCA and search strategy for Sunday.

12:46 p.m. I heard a meow at the door and opened to see Rheis and Mama. I put
Yahmuna into her bedroom and went back and opened the door and Rheis came in.

I called Karin.

Rheis had never been outdoors at my home . . . had lived the free life of an
outdoor cat.

HOW AND WHY?

Karin is a woman of great faith.

[Felvtalk] took Yahmuna (FIV+) to vet yesterday to get vaccinated for feline leukemia

2012-02-26 Thread czadna sacarawicz

why be difficult when with a little extra effort you can be impossible.

took Yahmuna to vet yesterday with intent to get vaccinated. she had been
sneezing during week. gums were inflamed as before. no drooling. she sounded
wet. no discharge from eyes or nose. vet noted no temperature. vet listened
to lungs. I pointed out her teeth. he said she needed to go on antibiotics -
- her lungs - - her teeth - - could go into pneumonia. I reminded him that two
weeks ago he said no antibiotics - - only treat when symptomatic. I said I
wanted to wait. he said why would I wait? I said antibiotics have not
generally been helpful for her. I came home with doxycyline which 30 hours
later I have not started.

in fairness to him. was hint of greenish mucus at nostrils this morning. a
tissue applied only came away wet. she sneezed and there was greenish mucus
which landed on the sink. last night her breathing sounded somewhat
high-pitched. not today.

I did not say I was not going to do anything. have been giving more vitamin C.
started the PetzLife oral gel. continuing chicken broth and humidity of shower
and humdifier. did a 20 minutes of car therapy (carrier in car - - curved car
windows capture heat). I have almost drowned on drive to airport from my own
sinus drainage.

your comments? thank you.

Date: Thu, 16 Feb 2012 05:39:30 -0800

I had a cat like that - Sounded like upper resp because of scar tissue. She had
been a street cat for many many years vet said it was due to not being
treated for URI's. They said they could do surgery clear out the scar tissue,
but it might come back, so I opted not to do it. She always sounded like she
had a URI, but she didn't.

Chronic upper respiratory or chronic allergies? My FIV cat got bad congestion
every 6 months when the weather changed I started the furnace or air
conditioning. He was vaccinated for FeLV lived fine mixing with my FeLV cats
for 10 years. He was vaccinated for FeLV every 6 months when there were FeLV's
in the house he never got the FeLV. If it is actually upper respiratory with
a fever, etc, then you don't vaccinate for anything,

If you are worried about about fighting transferring the FIV, you can have
the FIV cat's canines filed down to prevent deep bite wounds minimize chance
of passing the FIV.

We are aware that they need to be retested in 3 months in order to be
completely sure that they are FeLV positive.

However, I have a lot of doubts and this is the reason of why I am posting
 again...
We want to find nice and responsible families for these two kitties. Does
these kitties need to be adopted as the only cat in the house? Can they
share their lives with other cats? FeLV negative as long as they have their
vaccines up-to-date? Can we give them together in adoption? Can they share
their lives with other FeLV positive cats?
We are also aware of the huge responsibility that is in our hands at the
time of giving these two furry ones in adoption, we know that we need to
find homes that are well documented, and that intend to keep them indoors.
We would greatly appreciate any advice you could give us in order to ensure
a great life for these two little guys.

Kat,

Ellen should have waited longer than two days to have them tested again.
Waiting 90 days to retest is usually what is suggested to be more accurate.

I hope they really are all negative :0)

I need to share this so it can get to the FELV Lists and whomever is
following this testing debacle. We took in 5 Persians last week. We had
them combo tested with the standard Snap test. All five tested
positive. We had blood work done on one cat and it came back negative.
We assumed the tests were done wrong so they redid them two days ago.
All four remaining cats tested positive AGAIN.
We had blood work taken on all four, sent it in, and all four came back
negative.

This is really scary stuff. Cats are killed all the time because they
test positive. Had we heard about these cats being in a shelter
testing positive it's not likely we could have taken them in. The vet
office in Santa Cruz is going to follow up with the company, but if
there is anyone else out there tracking this stuff, I want to get the
information to them.
Ellen

2011-12-05 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Thank you family!!!

I typed a long note yesterday and aborted it. Yes, I was not happy with being
advised what med to put both Pookashay Meaow on without any explanations.
The state facility is a great idea. I ordered the GNC vegetarian formula CoQ
10 on Saturday. Natalie, You are really high on it.

This note is primarily about Meaow and his bloody diarrhea. I am going to
digress. He tore up the back of my hand last night when he got by me through
the bedroom door into the main part of the apartment. I have been leaving him
out of the cage thinking that would be less stressful. He attacked an older fe
leukemia + female. He has now attacked all the females of my home circle. I
am on antibiotics for the 4th time due to him since the beginning of October.
Yes, I remember well last summer's discussion about who controls the doors. He
is back in the cage. He crunched down on her tail so she can no longer lift
her tail. I intervened without protection.

Sunday morning there was a 1/3 gob of clotting blood on the bathroom floor. I
had put him in there while I cleaned the bedroom cages. Part of this morning's
bowel movement was hard formed the remainder was formed and contained a lot
more liquid. I bought some Paul Newman canned will feed that exclusviely
tonight. have not tried yogurt. last night fed cooked beef liver and milk and
cooked sweet potato, . . .

quit the variety?

He is on a waiting list for the local SPCA. I have identified him as a biter
to them.

he is a sweetie as I have said before who wants to claim me. I am attached to
him but no way can it be.

thanks for listening. ideas?

I go back to the vet on Saturday. will tell her about your comments.

thank you.

Animals (and people) with any heart problems need CoQ10 desperately! Between 30
mg and 50 mg daily! One of our cats has cardiomyopathy and renal failure…she
was diagnosed 1 ½ yrs. ago. She’s on a few drugs and sub-q fluids and I also
supplement her with CoQ10 – she’s doing really well. We don’t know how long
she’s had the problem…she’s about 12 yrs. old now.

There are varying degrees of heart murmurs in cats. They are measures in
fractions of 6. For instance, a 2 out of 6, or 2/6, is not as serious a a
4/6. We had a cat who was diagnosed with a murmur, and we did not have the
money to get further testing done on him at that time because he was fresh off
the street, A stray that just followed me inside one day after I had fed him.
lol He looked awful, mainly because he had been living as a stray with a bad
flea allergy. What a fantastic cat he proved to be! Well, all was ell for
about 6 months, then he started fainting (syncope), and we were told to get the
echo done. We did, at a specialist here in San Diego, with the help of some
awesome MySpace friends and a chip in, and it was learned then that he had
cardiomyopathy with pulmonary edema and aortic stenosis. His lungs were so
full of liquid and his heart had the all too common cardiomyopathy cats get. I
was told by the specialty hospital vet that it often happens that these
disorders, heart murmur and cardiomyopathy, go hand in hand (but not in every
case). Zoh's heart murmur was a 4/6, which is significant. They put Zoh on 3
meds which he took for the rest of his life, every day. Furosemide (lasix) for
the fluid in the lungs, Atenolol, a blood pressure med, and one more bp mes, I
cannot remember the name of, but he got better. I was told cats with
cardiomyopathy rarely live long, and Zoh lived 2 more years till he succumbed
to a heart attack and died in my arms, in my room.
I am hoping this info of my experience with heart murmurs might give you
something to talk about to your vet. I would def ask what the meds are, what
class, and why he is prescribing them, as well as get a definite
diagnosis/prognosis in his professional opinion. It sounds like he did not
give you enough info. And, I would say the echocardiogram is very important to
get, even if it is a bit pricey and you might have to go a little distance to
find a place to get it done. most vets do not have one in their office,
although if your cat is breathing hard, ask for a chest xray, for starters.
(Not as expensive, either. lol)Good luck.

Czadna,
Beth is right, there is a great Yahoo group for cats with heart murmurs. The
url is http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/feline-heart/
You really do need to have an echo done by a feline cardiologist. They can
usually be found at the ag college in your state.
Now, as far as the heart meds interacting with the leukemia meds, I don't know
- you might have to have both vets talk.

Anyway, that group was immensely helpful to me when my MIssy was diagnosed with
a heart murmur.

Good luck,

Kelley and Missy

[Felvtalk] retest of Hope; Albon?

2011-10-23 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Hope, adult spayed female, tested negative on in-office 3-way test yesterday.
She had been slightly positive for fe leukemia on 7.23. You had advised retest
at 3 months. I vaccinated her twice for fe leukemia in the weeks following her
slightly positive test for fe leukemia anyway. Are we done? I am ecstatic.
She is ever so much healthier now than she was then.

What are your comments re: telling potential rescue groups re: the slightly
positive test?

Her history is being rescued from death row at the county pound into foster
care by me.

A vet suggested I use Albon for coccidiosis on pound fosters. My experience
has been that 3 kittens/1 adult out of 4 kittens/2 adults quit eating and bowel
movements quit. Yesterday the vet sold me P__ tablets. comments on Albon?

Well, after trying one round of chemo last week Miller seemed to have a bit
more pep in his step and was eating like a champ but then on Tuesday, he didn't
want to eat so I force fed him and yesterday morning we took him in, vet gave
him subQ fluids and vitamins. I had an uneasy feeling all day and when I got
home I immediately went to where I knew he would be, behind the entertainment
center. He wouldn't move, he would not lift his head and when I picked him up,
he just hung limp in my arms. I knew then that it was time to let him go.
Fortunately, Dr. McCann was still at the office and she helped him cross over.
We may still have a house full of furbabies but his leaving has left a hole in
our hearts.

I shall see beauty but none to match your living grace,
I shall hear music but none as sweet
as the song with which you loved me,
I shall fill my days but I shall not, cannot forget.
Sleep soft, dear Miller. . .

[Felvtalk] BreAnne left today

hopefully to meet ToriRose and Isaac at the Bridge.

The local vet's euthanisia was really ugly. It happens. ( I thought it would be
easier for her rather than riding for 45 minutes). The local vet was no
stranger to her.

She had had fluids the previous 3 Saturdays. Our usual vet was not able to
give her as much fluids Saturday because of her breathing. I came home and let
her out and she disappeared into the woods, coming back when it got dark. I
put her on the patio to rest Sunday morning. She lay there awhile and left and
again returned in the darkness as I trusted she would though I began calling
her in midafternoon.

Mama (no relation to her) washed her last night. Physically, it was time.
You had counseled me that I would know.

Some of you know a rough translation of a Rumi poem Whoever brought me to the
tavern will have to take me home.

BreAnne was an alpha female - - just over 2 years old. Her playmate ToriRose
left in February 2010. Isaac left in February 2011. She got really thin last
fall and then rebounded. You helped me with her this spring when she quit
eating and then decided to eat only Fancy Feast beef. She rebounded in July.
will leave it there.

Remaining positives are Mama and Luscious and Shallie Jean and Hope.

laying exclusively on her side and meowing when I would pick her up to move her

intermittently caught in her throat. took her to local vet on 8.20 since more
highly trusted 30 miles and 60 miles away vets were not available. he gave us

immediately after eating. Since Monday she eats, she vomits, I feed, . . .
She is increasingly bringing up frothy phlegm. she makes a sound in her mouth
(epiglottis?). I have been orally hydrating her. She definitely has an
appetite. know definitely not passing stool yesterday/doubtful urinated. gave
her food this morning, vomit, more food (pate), vomit, nutri-cal, vomit, more
nutrical, vomit, a couple table spoons of homemade chicken broth with vitamins,
vomited up stringing clear phlegm. vet only says feline leukemia. Monday
night after the feeding and vomiting episode she was back up on her chest and
the noise in her throat had subsided. just as it did this morning. I told vet I

Has your vet done a complete blood panel on her? You might be able to find
a clue to her problem. Also complete urine test would help. These will help
identify a problem. Since cats are so good at hiding illness, we sometimes
need to go to extemes. It costs, but may be less in the long runsince you
find out fast what is wrong and needs to be done.
As to food, I have found that Gerber's baby food (check first to be sure
there is on onion or garlic in it) is easier to feed and my girls have
responded to that. Also, add hot water to canned food. My girls and boy
seem to prefer the liquid to eating the meat. At least they get some
nutrition. Also, has your vet said anything about doing sub q fluids? I had
to do that with Lil Bit after I first got her. Se was stressed out, had a
ragged coat, no luster and had lost weight. After a little over 1 - 1/2
weeks, she responded and has been fine since. Giving her fluids wasn't very
hard. The vet gave me a bag of fluids and needles and told me how to do it.
The heardest part was sticking her with the needle but I remimded myself I
was doing it for her benefit.
If she is stressed out, maybe keep her seperate from the others for a while
and give her lots of extra attention and loving to reassure her that she is
loved. Then reintroduce her to the others and see how it goes then. These
ae all tihngs I have done with my pride. Good luck!

I can't even get anyone to hold on to a healthy kitten temporarily - all my
favors are called in long ago, and I've even having problems placing barn cats.
. We could start treatment, but this lady gets more attached to this cat by
the day and it really is not fair to her (or the cat) to put him through
treatment and then have him PTS. We have an FELV sanctuary, but unfortunately
they only take in cats when there is money to be made off them.

We did ship a cat to Best Friends once, but they do not always have room either.

Like I said, this list has always been my go-to resource for FELV cats and I
have found placement for every single one in the past.

It is possible he has a false positive, but as he is anemic and sick, I'm
leaning towards true +. Unfortunately as I said there is no one to hold him
for 6 weeks and if we put him back outside he will be dead in 6 weeks.

Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas. He's
had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which we know
there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for a
confirmatory IFA.

Someone wrote me asking for help, this is her description of him:

He is slated to be euthanized at 5pm today. This boy is very affectionate,
loving to be held, petted, scratched, etc. He was even purring while being
petted at the counter at the vet's office with all the strange scents and
animal noises going on!

He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic. That's why he
hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since he's
been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the
treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home either
in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline leukemia
positive.

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find someone
who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be euthanized.

I've asked for pics etc

I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated. I know
someone on this list has room for a wonderful survivor of this horrible Texas
heat and drought.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just ask
their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more time!

My 1 year kitten was diagnosed with FeLV back in Oct. She has never tested
positive with either blood test, only with bone marrow aspiration after she
got real sick at 20 weeks of age. As of now she is showing no signs of FeLV,
just a low normal blood test. To look at her you would and the way she plays
you would not even know she had FeLV.

Questions are: Can a cat clear FeLV from the bone marrow? Could FeLV just
stay in the bone marrow and never go to her blood? Can a cat expect to live a
long life as long as the FeLV never moves from the bone marrow? If she stays
well should we think about getting another bone marrow aspiration since the
FeLV never been in the blood?

Right now she on interferon 1 week on 1 week off. She off all other drug as
she doing so well. Vet does not want to take her off the interferon ever.

I just let the hot water run until it is hot enough to warm up the food so
it smells good and they come running. I only give each one about 1
   teaspoon
because they prefe the liquid to the actual meat. They will come back

This was suggested to get her to eat, as for fiber you could add a
little peas or squash baby food to it, my kitties preferred the peas,
not too much or you will take the meat flavor away. Maybe a 1/4 jar of
peas to a jar of meat.

[Felvtalk] FW: request for counsel on BreAnne

2011-05-08 Thread czadna sacarawicz

took BreAnne to vet yesterday. chem screen all within normal limits. on CBC:
lymphocytes were high. vet said she definitely has leukemia. WBC were
13.2;HCT was 32%; HgB of 9.9; RBC's 6.5 - - all within normal range.
platelets are low; neutrophils are low, and Ly (what is that) are high. he said
her hydration was good. amoxicillin for 10 days and hope she pulls out of it.
he said she had a lot of poop inside. sent me home with an enema. his
diagnosis was alopecia and lymphadenopathy - - in her neck and behind her
knees. and I know often the growths cannot be felt.

you encouraged me to hang with her. continuing the supplements.

she seems like a lost little soul; eats a few bites and then leaves or doesn't
eat at all. will eat in privacy but very, very particular. took the other
cats to the country and have taken her out there a couple days. she ran up a
tree Friday morning.

please hang with us. counsel?

Has your vet done a complete blood panel on her? You might be able to find a
clue to her problem.
My girls and boy seem
to prefer the liquid to eating the meat. At least they get some nutrition.
Also, has your vet said anything about doing sub q fluids? I had to do that
with Lil Bit after I first got her. Se was stressed out, had a ragged coat,
no luster and had lost weight. After a little over 1 - 1/2 weeks, she
responded and has been fine since. Giving her fluids wasn't very hard. The
vet gave me a bag of fluids and needles and told me how to do it. The
heardest part was sticking her with the needle but I remimded myself I was
 doing it for her benefit.
If she is stressed out, maybe keep her seperate from the others for a while
and give her lots of extra attention and loving to reassure her that she is
loved. Then reintroduce her to the others and see how it goes then. These ae
all tihngs I have done with my pride. Good luck!

Cats are shedding. BreAnne's tail and rear legs look as if she has a bad
case of the fleas. When I flea comb her she continues to lose a lot of fur.
there are no fleas. there is now no luster in her fur. Bowel movements look
  okay.

this past Saturday I continued the follow-up ELISA testing. The 2

the vet to look at BreAnne. He commented on her ratty, looking dry coat,

starting her on an antibiotic. We started everyone on Petzlife oral gel

BreAnne has been losing weight, not eating well. I follow her around with
the food and draw her attention to it. She won't eat anything containing
the usual supplements we use. I have been hydrating some orally and giving
some NutriCal. She has been hanging out under the bathroom sink cabinet in
  the darkness.

Easter Sunday I was able to be home all day and let Scrumptious out (since
  she is negative).

My rescue group has two 8 week old FeLV positive kittens that need a place to
go. I'm in the Atlanta area but I don't think there are any FeLV sanctuaries
nearby or even in the whole state. The lady who has been fostering them is
willing to drive almost anywhere. She has family in PA and goes up there
several times a year so driving a distance isn't a problem for her. Plus we
have other people who can drive them to various other states. The kittens
will be fully vetted and spayed or neutered. My rescue is a very small group.
We don't have a shelter facility, we just have foster homes. We don't have a
long term place for the kittens. Can anyone help or offer suggestions?

We've only had one ELISA test done on the kittens but the mother cat had two
positive ELISA tests and we're waiting on the IFA results for her. Because of
that I'm thinking the kittens who tested positive are really positive. Think
we should do an IFA test on them? I feel certain that they are truly positive
but who knows. Also two of their littermates have tested negative on their
first ELISA. How long should we wait before re-testing? Do you guys think
those kittens could really be negative or is it more likely that it just
isn't showing up yet for some reason? I know I've heard some of you say that
you had a positive and a negative kitten that were littermates that came from
a positive mother cat. But does that happen very often?

Please let me know if anyone can put me in touch with a sanctuary for the
kittens. We might need one for the mother but for now I'll just worry about
the kittens. Oh, we do have someone who is taking the two negative kittens
and will hold them until they can be re-tested.

  There are now 6 cats.

Cats are shedding. BreAnne's tail and rear legs look
as if she has a bad case of the fleas. When I flea

no fleas. there is now no luster in her fur.
  Bowel movements look okay.

this past Saturday I continued the follow-up ELISA
testing. The 2 originally negative cats are still
negative and I vaccinated them. I asked the vet to
look at BreAnne. He commented on her ratty, looking
dry coat, said she had a temperature (but that it may have
been due to the long ride up). I have no explanation
about why I didn't ask how high or about starting her on an
antibiotic. We started everyone on Petzlife oral gel
(thank you Natalie) a couple weeks ago. He
said her mouth looked good. BreAnne has been losing
weight, not eating well. I follow her around with the
food and draw her attention to it. She won't eat
anything containing the usual supplements we use. I have
been hydrating some orally and giving some NutriCal.
She has been hanging out under the bathroom sink cabinet in
  the darkness.

Easter Sunday I was able to be home all day and let
Scrumptious out (since she is negative).

I guess writing this is about getting ready maybe to let
her go. The cat she is today in no way resembles her
picture of 16 months ago. Stress for her? Her Grieving

[Felvtalk] request for counsel on BreAnne

Some of us are just denser than gold.

Five of 7 tested positive for FeLV in March 2010 on in-house test. Issac, a
positive, crashed in February. Vet had said to retest in a year. Do we now do
the IFA or ELISA on everyone? Vet had vaccinated and given boosters to
everyone at that time. We have switched from that vet.

Today vet said should do in-office test on positives.

Earlier this week some of you had kindly commented re: poisoning possibilities
for changes in pupils of unclaimed cats who dine at restaurants. This vet said
Henry's pupils were result of calcivirus or herpes virus post stress of
neutering in September. I have known him since July 2010. He has never had
runny eyes or pussy eyes or ocular discharge or respiratory symptoms.

I realize now that I did not address the concern you posted about. I felt
the need to educate you about the testing protocol for FELV because I would
hate to see you cage a cat for 3 months that may not even be infected with
the virus. You cannot consider a cat persistently viremic until they test
 positive on the IFA test.

If it turns out the cat you rescued is really FELV positive, she is not going
to transmit the virus to your other cats through some chance encounter. It
would take prolonged contact with your other cats to infect them with the
virus. Even if they had prolonged contact, it does not mean your other cats
would get the virus. Some cats are able to build an immune response and
fight off the virus. I rescued a cat over the summer that tested positive on
the combo snap test and the ELISA test but tested negative on the IFA.
Thirty days later, he tested negative on the snap test, the ELISA test and
continued to test negative on the IFA test. As a precaution, we tested again
30 days later, and he continued to test negative on all three tests. His
body built an immune defense and fought off the virus

 Hello,
I rescued a stray two weeks ago. Took her to the vet a week ago and they said
she was FELV positive. She was starving when I found her, but she has gained
weight and is looking good. Her eyes just glisten and she seems healthy. The
 vet
said she was about a year old. She only weighed six pounds last week. I did
 not
have the heart to euthanize her when she is not suffering. However, I have
three healthy cats upstairs and I live in constant fear that they will escape
 to
the basement where this cat we now call Amber is staying. I keep her in a
 nice
cage during most of the time and let her out to get her exercise in the
 basement
about four hours per day. My husband is building her a 8' long x 4' wide x 6'
tall cage so she will have more room I do hate keeping her caged up, but
 don't
have a choice. She is very sweet and it is just a sad situation. I tried to
 find
a home for her but no one seems to want a cat with her issues. We are trying
 to
be very cautious regarding the other cats, but it is does make me fearful.
I plan to have her rested in three months. I am so new to this situation, so
 any
comments or ideas are much appreciated.

[Felvtalk] Rosie Lola are safely home - - Bless you - - may others be so gracious to us - - cat's eyes

2011-03-30 Thread czadna sacarawicz

The four t-n-r ferals at Tractor Supply all have weird pupils. I can pet 3 of
the four.

I picked up Henry and brought him home Sunday night because he had an area
under his eye that has not healed over several months. It looks like a
puncture wound.

The three original cat's eyes all seemed perfect when I started feeding them -
- about 2 years ago. Henry was trapped last September at a close by restaurant
and relocated himself. His pupils were perfect then. There are several
restaurants in the area so they spend time eating there probably - - deep fried
fish. Tractor Supply puts out dry food. I feed a can and a half of Evo at
night.

Henry's eyes are way too dilated. There is no blink reflex in one of them and
a slight one in the other. We are going to the vet on Saturday. web sites
talk about taurine deficiency. The mama's pupils seem constricted.

[Felvtalk] Isaac

2011-02-20 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Isaac would have been 3 years young on 4.14. He tested positive along with 4
others of my inner circle of seven on 3.1.2010. I did not test further but put
efforts into food and supplements.

Isaac was big (not fat) black, neutered and active and appeared healthy and
aggravated Scrumptious assertively. This group lived an indoor-outdoor life in
the rural Carolina Piedmont.

Tuesday morning he did not eat. His breath was horrendous. He liked to eat -
- I used to joke with him that he and I both needed to spend time on the
treadmill. That night he was not there nor on Wednesday nor Thursday morning
though I searched and called. Thursday night he answered. He could not move
and his pupils were dilated and fixed. He did not look as if he had been
attacked by dogs or coyotes.

I took him the 14 miles home and hydrated him orally during the night. He got
up to walk several times during the late night morning but would walk 3 steps
and wobble and fall down; he would cry out while sleeping with me or when I
moved him but I did not know what the matter was. Conscious but not responsive
to me. (the crying out walking with falling down reminiscent of Torie Rose -
- in her last earthly night. She was the first and original of this inner
circle of 8 who was euthanized 2.28.2010). I made an appointment with a vet
for Friday. He gave fluids - - thought Isaac's teeth and forehead spoke of
liver failure, said his lungs were clear and heart sounded good though a little
fast. The plan was to do fluids over the weekend and reassess early in the
week. Vet said could be leukemia. could be poison. didn't know.

I unintentionally killed him Friday night and will say no more about that.
That is a heavy load.

To have him suddenly in major distress was unimaginable. He was only a
nanometer beyond Scrumptious in closeness to me. He and Shallie Marie appeared
to be the healthiest. This is the last thing I would have expected.

Thank you for hearing my story.

any wisdom or insights will be appreciated.

[Felvtalk] Leona Jean Yahmuna

2011-02-20 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Leona Jean is the FIV female who came to my patio on Thanksgiving Day. I have
written of her before and was graciously advised to check out the FIV group.

Her upper respiratory symptoms are back - - the worst since she presented.
Leona Jean is now having a little goop in the corners of her eyes and the
mucous is beginning to string. She has been on about four different
antibiotics. The vet said on the last visit that her lungs sounded clear.
Does that mean nose sinuses are where the infection is? We just finished
the 200 mg azithromycin the vet put her on last time. Leona Jean's respiratory
symptoms diminish only somewhat but really don't even come close to clearing.

The vet had advised to use the azithromycin daily and then on alternate days.
Humidity and hydrating with juice don't seem to help like they did before. She
won't drink homemade chicken broth either.

comments?

I wouldn't fight at all if someone knew of a superb FIV home for her. My own
local inquires have come up empty. She is sweet, sleeps with me, maybe has a
megacolon. We are in the Piedmont of NC.

Thank you.

[Felvtalk] Pookashay and cough

2010-11-02 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Our expendable dollars were spent in euthanizing a young sweetie in February
and SNAP tests for 7 cats on March 1. Five cats tested positive. We have not
done any blood work since my pockets are empty. I watch nose and gum color.

The vet saw Pookashay in May. I had made an appointment to have him euthanized
because his breathing was so rough. He was better on the appointment day. The
vet heard a murmur. She suggested a possible cause was anemia. I started him
on Aunt Jeni's fish oil after reading a post here . He has developed a cough in
the last several weeks. We live in the low land of the Carolina Piedmont - -
lots of human allergies and sinusitis. The cats are outside in a segregated
country area and inside at night (not good air inside either).

I took Pookashay back to the vet earlier this month. The vet said she did not
hear fluid in his lungs. She did not think it a productive cough. She
suggested children's benadryl prn. When questioned, she said she did not hear
a murmur.

I feed Evo supplementing with a bit of raw beef liver, raw beef heart, Uber
Greens, Aunt Jeni's, lysine and Dr. Belfield's Mega C/Welch's mango juice and
sometimes PetTinic I quit the acyclovir after 6 months because it didn't seem
to be making any difference. A different vet had recommended that. Some of
the cats surely supplement their diet from other sources.

Pookashay wants to stay inside often which has not been like him. He lost his
front teeth last winter before I knew what was going on. The vet didn't say
anything about his teeth or gingivitis.

Any comments would be appreciated. Forgive me for going on and on. Ours posts
are often hard to read through my tears. You certainly make the road less
lonely. we are honored to know you and by the furry souls.

Thanks.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Just checking in...Murphy and Rosie

I've been off boards for a bit-This whole FeLV thing is so sad-reading all
the new people's posts desperately seeking information and hope (like me a
year and a half ago). Then reading as our sweet little babies lose their
battle with this dreaded disease-Like the 4 sibling brothers I had. We have
been lucky so far with Murphy and Rosie since starting the Imulan treatments
last September (before they had any symptoms). Their bloodwork has been
pretty good-both have HCT in the 35-39 range. We got behind in the blood
testing and have an appt today because Murphy has developed a sneeze that
appears to be allergies, but I cannot take a chance-so we will have them both
checked and I may get brave and order another FeLV test-This is so hard
financially-in a year and a half-we had the 6 kitties to the vets on numerous
occasions-tried one transfusion that didn't help ($1500 for that alone) we
are damned if we do and damned if we don't-it rips your heart out-we
tried to treat this disease and have spent our savings - got behind and are
fighting foreclosure...(over 7500 in vet bills in the past 1 1/2 yrs on the 6
kitties-and that's not the old dogs or horses) it's a disease of the heart-we
were so heartbroken and desperate to save this feral litter-we loved them so
muchand we weren't even cat people until we rescued them. Their sweet
little faces and kitten antics...how could you resist?? Anyway-the last 2
appear to be well so far and we were at 8 weeks apart with the
injections-have one dose each left and I've postponed giving it to stretch
the dollars. So we are headed to our vet for check ups and blood work today.
I just want to say bless you to all of you-this is a battle not won too
often, but your support and kind words have helped so many of us!

Re: [Felvtalk] Possible therapy for felv

2010-04-17 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Hello

This is my first post. 5 of 7 of my inner circle tested positive for feline
leukemia using the more reliable test (per the vet). She advised 1 ml of
acylovir twice a week plus 1 ml Hy-Vite drops twice a week.

The following caught my attention: I know that they put cats on the HIV/AIDS
cocktails of AZT and other drugs they use in humans; and continue to insist
that the research that most researchers have come to accept is wrong.

Feline leukmeia is totally new water. An outside feral was highly lethargic
progressing into distress for reasons unknown. He tested positive. He had a
two week access to a rescue kitten which later became part of my inner circle.
I noticed increasing in size lymph nodes in her neck in early February. She
tested positive. Her decline was precipitous. On March 1, I tested the rest
of the inner circle, all adults but one of similar age to ToriRose, deceased -
- approx 10 months now.

Please comment on acyclovir.

I am doing Evo for half of meals supplemented with vitamin C, DHA/EPA, raw egg
yolk and raw liver plus the acyclovir and Hy-Vite drops.

THANK YOU.
m
