Dearest Robin, I lost my sweet baby Fluffie two weeks ago. The hurt is still
so strong. You work so hard to save them and yet sometimes they still have to
leave us. It's so fustrating. I send you love and know I feel your pain. I am
hurting too but you are not alone. We are all here for you. Take your time, I
hate when people think you should just get over it after a few days. I will
never get over it only time will make it easier to deal with. For me I know
that the pain seems so much but to never have had her in my life hurts even
more. Kiwi was blessed and the love he gave was pure and all yours and death
can't even take that from you.
Hugs,

Robin,

Sharyl gave you great info.  The babyfood worked wonders with one of my kitties
who had issues with her stomach so bad she stopped eating.  I thought we were
going to lose her, but more than twice she came through with the help of the
baby food, pepcid ac, and chicken broth and boiled chicken.  Make sure she is
getting fluids.  Dehydration makes kitties feel horrible.  Syringing several
drops or more every hour or so may help.

more on his own then he stopped.  I am going to wait 30 minutes to make sure he

2008-09-28 Thread Gloria Lane
I know it's a difficult situation, but there are rescues and rescuers
that take FELV cats/kittens. And if he chooses to keep him, would be
such a gift. What I do to boost the immune system - and it works well
- is to give 1cc interferon once daily to my FELV kitties that are
less than 3 -4 years old. Different vet sell interferon alpha for
different amounts of $$. I shopped around and found a vet who would
sell me a big supply that lasts several months, for $15. I buy it
from him, mix it as instructed, and freeze it in small containers, so
that I can get it and unfreeze as needed. I give 1cc daily with a 3cc
syringe.

Best of luck,

Gloria

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi - Sad

2008-09-28 Thread Sharyl
Robin, I don't know if Kiwi is crashing from the FeLV or for another reason.  I
understand you are limited with funds.  One idea would be to feed him meat baby
food (no onion or garlic).  Gerbers 2 Chicken and Gravy is a favorite in our
house.  If he can't eat it on his own you can assist feed him with a syringe.
I got 10 cc syringes in the baby section at the drug store.  The pharmacists
may just give you a few syringes.  Notice I said assist feed not force feed.
It is a state of mind.  You are assisting Kiwi to eat.  There is a great Yahoo
Assist Feeding group that you can join.
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-Assisted-Feeding/
A kitty who isn't eating has less desire to eat, especially a kitty who has
been throwing up.

Original Strength Pepcid AC (not any of the other versions of Pepcid) or
Famotidine, the generic version helps with stomach acid.  I'd try 1/4 of a 10
mg tablet once a day to see if it helps.  I crush it, dissolve it in a little
water, add it to the baby food and syringe it to my cats.

You could try adding some peas or squash baby food to his food for the
diarrhea.  Canned pumpkin (not pie filling) works too.  Usually 1/2 tsp with
every feeding.  Slippery Elm Bark, which is found in health food stores, is one
of those good for everything supplements.   It is a powder that can be added to
food or dissolved in water and syringed. SEB helps nausea, diarrhea and
constipation.

Just wanted to put some ideas out there on how you could make Kiwi more
comfortable.
Sharyl

I have not posted for a while about kiwi. I think the last one I told you that
my son was going to put him on a Bandfield Plan. He never did. Before that I
tried to find a rescue who would take him, but there wasn't any openings. I
have no funds to get him to vet. Sad to say, kiwi is really sick. He is unable
to keep food down. He usually likes his dry food, but he won't eat. I gave
him just a little wet food, and he through it all up. He does drink a little
water. I just gave him a teaspoon of tuna (not cat food), it will take 5 to 10
minutes to see if he can keep it down. He used his kitty litter in the last day
or so. Before all this, he ate a lot of his favorite cat food. He didn't
throw it up, but he had diarrhea and he was bony. He was always full of
energy. I can't let him keep going on this way, so I plan to take him to a
shelter and explain the situation to them and ask them humanly put him to sleep.
I don't want to do this, but I don't want him to suffer anymore. To
you who have not read my earlier postings, I did not adopt kiwi, my son found
him when he was about 2 1/2 weeks old near his did sibling. He bought him home
and we did our usual thing and gave him kitten formula and kitten food. He
thrived. My daughter who has another cat took her's to a regular vet
visit, but de sided to take kiwi also. (this one time) Sadly, Kiwi came out
positive for feline leukemia. We checked him about when he was about 7 or 8
months old, and again he came back positive. We new that we would not be able
to afford to pay a vet so we tried to find a rescue. None of them were able to
take a Feline leukemia positive kitten/cat. We live in Fairfax County
Virginia, which is a large county, but no one could take him. So we did the
best we could for him, but it wasn't enough. I don't blame anyone.
It's just how it is. It's just so hard when your hands are tied. Well,
I better go for now. I will let you know what happened. Bye, Robin

He has been able to keep a few flakes of canned tuna down, and he is drinking.
I think that I have a can of plain pumpkin and I am going to try giving him a
little bit. What ever I give him I just want to give him a little at a time.
To much might be to much for his system to handle right now. I will get back
to you after I try the pumpkin. Thanks! Bye, Robin

Tried to give Kiwi a little canned pumpkin. He tried to ignore it, but I put a
tiny bit in his mouth and he became a little interested. He ate a tiny bit
more on his own then he stopped. I am going to wait 30 minutes to make sure
he can keep it down. I am not sure what to look for. I guess maybe for his
appetite to return eventually. I just wish I could afford to take him to a vet
to see exactly what is going on with him. Anyway, I'll let you know how things
are coming along soon. Thanks! Bye, Robin

I gave Kiwi water and some pumpkin via a syringe. He did ok. He has not
thrown it up so far. I changed his dry food to another and he has actually
eaten a few. My concern this moment is that he hasn't urinated or defecated.
I am going to give him a little tuna in a few hours. I don't want to put to
much in his delicate system. I will try to coax him to use his kitty litter
box. Well, that's all for now. Bye, Robin

2008-08-24 Thread Sharyl
Not being able to take him to the vet makes it tough.  Canned pumpkin (not pie
filling) has helped many kitties.  So has slippery elm bark which can be found
in most health food stores or on line.  Also giving a probiotic could help.
Since Kiwi won't eat canned food it might be hard to give him the pumpkin.
Diarrhea can lead to dehydration which will cause another laundry list of
problems.   Food allergies and IBD both cause these symptoms.  A cat can
develop a food allergy even if they have been eating a food for a period of
time.

The eyes are another issue.  He may need terramycin salve to clear up the eye.
Supplementing with L-Lysine couldn't hurt.

My son found kiwi beside his dead sibling in the woods. Kiwi was actually very
healthy. We cleaned him up and gave him kitten formula. The next day we took
him to our local vet who thought he was between
2 1/2 to 3 weeks old. He would not suck on the kitten nipple bottle so we
feed him through a dropper. He acted as though we could not feed him fast
enough. He loved his kitten formula. We did everything for him a mom cat would
do. He thrived. When he was about 3 months old one of my daughters took the
kitten to the vet because she was also taking her cat. Everything looked good
until they did the fel Luk test. It came take positive. We were all shocked.
The vet asked us what we wanted to do. Like do we want them to put him to
sleep. I couldn't believe it. This active happy go lucky kitten. I
couldn't imagine doing something like that. We were worried about the
other cat, who had been immunized against it. He came back negative. Well,
this was last summer. Now he is a year old and has been fixed and tested
positive again. We think he might have gotten it from his farel mother's
milk. All this time we were trying to place him in a foster home, because we
had two dogs and another cat. There has not been any openings, I think possibly
because he is felv positive. Right now he has diarrhea and some guk in his
eyes. But he does act fine. I do feed him dry food because he throws up wet
food. He needs to see a vet, but I don't have the money. I know with dogs
if they get an upset stomack and have diarrhea, chicken breast is good. I am
wondering if chicken breast might be helpful for cats also. I am also exploring
to see if I can sign him up with Bandfield at Petsmart. I would get the top
plan which is about $30.00. I figure it's better then nothing. I think
most lab work is included. And I also think they he will need plenty of blood
test to check his blood count. Any advise is very welcomed. Thanks! P.S.
wish I could send pictures of him!

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi ~ urgency imo

2008-08-24 Thread Laurieskatz
Diarrhea is a serious problem. It can result in death.
It can be from something as simple as parasites and as serious as intestinal
cancer. Can be from food allergies or IBD. More info here:
http://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-diarrhea.html
http://cats.suite101.com/article.cfm/diarrhea_in_cats

Most vets prescribe metronidazole (flagyl) which is not expensive. I am not
a fan of it but it's usually the first thing my vets prescribe.
Food trials can get to the bottom of a food allergy (no test for food
allergy).
Untreated diarrhea can lead to break down of the follicles in intestine that
do the work of moving the bowels and the cat will never have normal stools.
This happened to one of my cats ~ that is why I urge you to get him to a
vet. Maybe friends or family would help? Even if you could get a few people
to donate five or 10 dollars, that would help. I doubt it will be more than
a vet visit and meds. Some vets take credit cards.

In the meantime please give the unflavored pedialtye. I am sure you know
that cats can go into liver failure if they go more than 48 hours without
proper nutrition.

RE the eyes, if you give the wrong remedy, it can make things worse. I would
never treat an eye without vet supervision. Please find a way to get him to
the vet. These are both serious issues if left untreated.

Laurie

on the back for kittens - can get fleas and internal parasites. I
also buy Panacur for $8 at the Farmers store, and give a little bit
(1/4 cc) to kittens for parasites. I buy homeopathic anti-diarrhea
tincture in a small bottle for $8-10 at the health food store and use

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi

2008-08-24 Thread Chris
Good for you for taking care of Kiwi--he sounds like a spunky little guy.
Whatever you do for him is more than most would have done and we all just
try to do the best we can depending on our circumstances. I have 2 FELV +
and one, Romeo, absolutely freaks out if I have to take him to vet. I've
only done a few trips with him because of that--it would be good if I could
get him there more regularly but the stress to him is not worth it. He's an
older guy and I know with him, I have to watch his teeth/gums as he's prone
to infections. My other FELV+, Tucson, is more mellow about going to vet
but still finds it pretty stressful. I know with her, if she turns her nose
up at food, something's going on and I need to check her white blood count.

I made a decision based on their personalities, etc. that the very best I
could do for both of them was to give them some decent food, keep them safe
at home, etc. I know them well enough to sense when something is up. You
shouldn't have to bring Kiwi for regular blood tests and I don't bring mine
in for yearly checkups. Save vet trips for when you know something's
really not right... If vet prescribes meds, have him give u a prescription
and consider buying online or even at regular drug store--oftentimes, meds
are cheaper that way. Maybe for the diahrea, start by bringing stool sample
for testing to vet first. Its cheaper and this way if you do have to bring
Kiwi in, he'll have some ideas about what is or is not going on.

In the meantime, get him to eat anything that he'll keep down and make sure
he has plenty of fluids--water, water from tuna can, moist people food
like chicken, etc. Try not to change the food he eats too often--if you
have to, mix the old food w. the new as change of food can also cause
diahrea. Look around for some really good food for him--doesn't have to be
the most expensive food but watch for fillers that don't have any
nutritional value. If he eats chicken fine, then maybe supplement dry food
with cooked chicken--and it doesn't have to be chicken breast--my guys LOVE
the dark meet I peel off chicken legs, etc.

I recommend chicken or turkey canned. Best to avoid fish and any with

Parasites that live in the intestine will not be killed by Frontline flea

Revolution also claims to kill fleas. It is not the best for ear mites since
they have a 3 week cycle and if you do repeat the Revolution, it's repeated
at 4 weeks. Here is an exchange I had with a vet regarding Revolution:

(VET)Well - I would probably just address each problem separately - use an
oral dewormer for the worms and an ear mite medicine that is put directly in
the ear. That vet probably carries a product called accarex which is a
one-dose ear mite medicine. That is what I would prefer to do anyway. :)

Hi Laurie. I am happy to hear that Zoe recovered alright. About Revolution -
it is an ok product if you have a cat that truly needs treatment all of the
things that Revolution covers. I am not crazy about it and don't use it on
my cats - it covers everything but doesn't seem to really cover anything all
that well (and it is expensive). I have had a large number of clients
complain that they were not impressed by its ability to control fleas. When
it first became available 5 years ago or so - the clinic that I was working
at did an experiment to see how truly efficacious it was against internal
parasites (worms) - we were not impressed and after that little in-house
experiment did not rely on it for that purpose. It is probably better
suited as a preventative tool than a curative tool for established problems.
If you just have ear mite issues and deworming needs - I guess Revolution
wouldn't be my first choice of treatment.

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi our felv one year old cat

2008-08-23 Thread r_pine
My son found kiwi beside his dead sibling in the woods. Kiwi was actually very
healthy. We cleaned him up and gave him kitten formula. The next day we took
him to our local vet who thought he was between
2 1/2 to 3 weeks old. He would not suck on the kitten nipple bottle so we
feed him through a dropper. He acted as though we could not feed him fast
enough. He loved his kitten formula. We did everything for him a mom cat
would do. He thrived. When he was about 3 months old one of my daughters took
the kitten to the vet because she was also taking her cat. Everything looked
good until they did the fel Luk test. It came take positive. We were all
shocked. The vet asked us what we wanted to do. Like do we want them to put
him to sleep. I couldn't believe it. This active happy go lucky kitten. I
couldn't imagine doing something like that. We were worried about the other
cat, who had been immunized against it. He came back negative. Well, this was
last summer. Now he is a year old and has been fixed and tested positive
again. We think he might have gotten it from his farel mother's milk. All
this time we were trying to place him in a foster home, because we had two dogs
and another cat. There has not been any openings, I think possibly because he
is felv positive. Right now he has diarrhea and some guk in his eyes. But he
does act fine. I do feed him dry food because he throws up wet food. He needs
to see a vet, but I don't have the money. I know with dogs if they get an
upset stomack and have diarrhea, chicken breast is good. I am wondering if
chicken breast might be helpful for cats also. I am also exploring to see if I
can sign him up with Bandfield at Petsmart. I would get the top plan which is
about $30.00. I figure it's better then nothing. I think most lab work is
included. And I also think they he will need plenty of blood test to check his
blood count. Any advise is very welcomed. Thanks! P.S. wish I could send
pictures of him!

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi our felv one year old cat

2008-08-23 Thread wendy
Welcome to the group.  Chicken breast, as well as chicken broth, worked great
with my kitty Julie, who had some eating issues.  Didn't help with diarrhea
though.  Canned pumpkin can be good for that (without spices).  I always
promote pure L-lysine as a supplement; you can get it at a health food store.
You might have to mix it in his water if he won't eat wet food.  Or in chicken
broth.  It's tasteless.  It's good for boosting the immune system.  A stress
free environment and good diet are the two most important things you can do for
Kiwi.  The lysine may also help with the stuff in his eyes, because a lot of
times that's associated with conjunctivitis/feline herpes (can't sure it but
it's not anything serious; it's kind of like cold sores for humans).  Lysine is
good for herpes because it acts as an anti-viral.  Not sure how I feel about
regular blood testing for FeLV+ kitties.  I did have a kitty die from anemia,
so it may surprise some
that I have this view, but I think the stress of the vet visit, especially
many vet visits, might off-set the benefit of having regular blood tests.  But
that is just my opinion, and there are others here who may feel differently.
Good luck with Kiwi and keep us posted!
:)

All
this time we were trying
to place him in a foster home, because we had two dogs and another cat.  There
has not been any openings, I think possibly because he is felv positive.  Right
now he has diarrhea and some guk in his eyes.  But he does act fine.  I do feed
him dry food because he throws up wet food.  He needs to see a vet, but I don't
have the money.  I know with dogs if they get an upset stomack and have
diarrhea, chicken breast is good.  I am wondering if chicken breast might be
helpful for cats also.  I am also exploring to see if I can sign him up with
Bandfield at Petsmart.  I would get the top plan which is about $30.00.  I
figure it's better then nothing.  I think most lab work is included.  And I
also think they he will need plenty of blood test to check his blood count.
Any advise is very welcomed.  Thanks!  P.S.  wish I could send pictures of him!

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi our felv one year old cat

2008-08-23 Thread Gloria Lane
I'm so glad you joined this group - I remember when I found my little
kitten Calawalla Banana BooBoo, in 2001, and she looked so darned
healthy - so lively, and she tested positive for FELV and I just
didn't know anything about it. Fortunately, I had a vet who didn't
sugggest euth. and who said not to worry, the virus dies when it hits
the air, etc etc. I kept her separated from my other cats for a while
- even taped paper to the bottom of the door. But after rading and
talking and being on this list, I finally decided to just open the
doors up and mix the cats. WOrked fine.

Calawalla died in 2004. I knew about interferon, from Tally and her
web site, but never used it - just didn't think that healthy little
kitten would get sick and die. But she did, she was between 2.5 and 3
yrs old.It seemed fairly sudden, but she had mediastinal lymphoma.

Anyhow, I'm a believer in daily interferon, if the kitties are less
than 4 years old. I have a friend with 1 FELV cat and 1 non-FELV
cat. She's used oral low dose interferon for her FELV cat, and kitty
has made it past kittenhood into adult hood (must be 5 or 6 now).
There are vastly different prices available for interferon.

BTW, I have 5 FELV cats right now - 1 is 5, 2 are around 13 years, and
the new one is a year or two - I'm starting him on interferon.

SOunds like your kitten may have some additional problems, but he may
turn out ok - I'd encourage you to go ahead and pursue keeping him
healthy, and also look into interferon. Chicken sounds like a good
option for upset stomach, btw.

Best of luck,

Gloria

Wendy, I am certainly no expert but have experienced life with a felv
positive cat. If your Kiwi is acting fine, maybe you could change his diet
to see if this helps his diarrhea. We had a cat who would eat nothing but
chicken (human chicken) and he lived for over 20 years. Of course he didn't
have feline leukemia. Personally, my belief is that stess is the biggest
killer of these cats. You can have all the lab work in the world done but
if you are not financially in a position to pay for extrodinary treatment,
then what is the point. My concern now would be to get the diarrhea under
control and watch his eyes. That can be treated. It may not be anything
all that significant. If he becomes inactive, won't eat or drink water or
seems to be having trouble breathing then I would take him to the vet. Also
if the diarrhea doesn't subside with a change in diet he should be checked
out as well.

Best of luck to you and your Kiwi.

Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi our felv one year old cat

2008-08-23 Thread Laurieskatz
A couple of my cats have herpes. An outbreak is evidenced by clear discharge
from the eyes. Gunky eyes most likely mean an upper respiratory infection
which may require antibiotics. A failure to treat an infected eye can lead
to ulcers and even blindness. I encourage a vet visit for the gunky eyes. A
vet can tell you if Kiwi has a temperature...unless you can take his temp. I
wouldn't wait for gunky eyes to self correct.

For diarrhea/food ideas, check out www.catinfo.org and maybe visit the IBD
yahoo group. Sometimes WD works (if they need more fiber) and sometimes Low
Reside Works (if they need less fiber). Both foods have to be purchased at
vet office. Diarrhea can sometimes mean a food allergy (it does in my house)
and often times grains can be allergens. Important to keep him hydrated. You
can syringe unflavored pedialyte into his mouth (carefully). Good info on
syringing at the feline assisted feeding yahoo group.

There is a new product for diarrhea (Purina?). Maybe someone else remembers
what it's called. May need a vet to provide it. Not sure.
I wouldn't sit on either problem. Good you are acting.
Prayers for Kiwi.

I hope everything turns out OK for the little guy. Will Bandfield take him
and not exclude anything to do with pre-existing conditions? Will they take

You do not need a vet to provide Fortiflora, if that is what you are
talking about...Purina makes it.

Fortiflora: *http://tinyurl.com/4zp9h5

*My vet swears by Diarsanyl : *http://tinyurl.com/6cpowb

*He says it contains volcanic earth, and to quote him sounds like hippie
stuff, but it works.

I keep both in my arsenal of kitty diarrhea remedies. Usually if one does
not work, the other will.

You will get lots of advice here. How old is your other cat? Odds are that if
your other cat didn't contract felv from kiwi from the time they were together
he won't ever contract it. There is always a small risk. But I have mixed at
least 13 negative cats with up to two positive cats over a period of over 10
years and have never had the disease pass from the positive cats to one of the
negative cats.

even if other things had to go. And, just as luckily, she loved to
travel so getting her this care was very possible. There are a lot of
supplements available. Listen to those on this list. Feed him the
best possible diet.I really liked Primal Raw and no grain foods.
Try to reduce the stress in your friend's life. Dixie had to tolerate
living in a home that was being constructed and reconstructed but
 seemed to adapt wonderfully.

Love your little friend with all your heart and let him love you with
 his.

Good luck and blessings to you.

in good health. We bought some kitten formula and he drank like a

eventually get him into a rescue. My daughter who was living with
me at the time took her cat in for his regular shots, and took kiwi
with her so she could be looked at. I guess kiwi was about 3 months
old then. We were very shocked when kiwi came back positive for
feline luk. The doctors asked without saying the words if we wanted
to put him asleep. We said no. At that point she was and kind of
still is a very healthy happy one year old who loves to wrestle with
our cocker and would love to play with my daughter's Japanese Bob
Tail Cat, but unfortunately we have to keep them separate. The
Japanese Bob Tail Cat has been immunized against Feline Luk, but we
have also heard that the shot does not offer 100% protection. It's
sad because they use to love to play together. We were hoping that
in a few months kiwi would come back negative, but he came back
positive for the second test. He still is very active, but he has
been having trouble with loose bowels. He is also a bit on the thin
side. I don't have the money to take him to the vets and we have
tried to find him a rescue and or foster home, but right now it
doesn't seem like any are available. One thing positive is that we
were able to find an organization to neuter him. Now he doesn't
spray. Thank God! He is funny sometimes. Some times he gets one
of his claws caught in things like curtains, and cat toys. He was
trying to catch a fly one day by our back patio window and his nail
got caught in the curtain and he couldn't get free. He was scared
and somehow got himself wrapped in the curtain. He was so grateful
when I freed him. His favorite toy is a 3 inch round black rubber
spider. He loves carrying it around in the house. I don't let him
play with it unless someone is here with him because I worry about
him swallowing it and it getting stuck in his intestines causing a
blockage. He also loves laser pointers. She loves chasing the dot
on the floor or wall. He loves the little jingle cat balls, or
strings. One thing I don't understand is that she enjoys licking
our cocker spaniels face. He is such a funny cat. Besides that he
loves to check everything out. He is the curious little cat. I
would enclose a picture of him but I am new to this site and I don't
know if that is allowed. Well, enough for now. I would appreciate
advise from anyone on raising a feline luk positive cat. Thanks!

Thanks. She had the best of everything and was very happy and loved.
I miss her so much. Right now I am looking at a little 4 week old (?)
copper kitten that came from the same pine thicket Dixie came from.
After a day of talking, assuring and reassuring her, she allowed me to
snatch her up and bring her to the farm. Before you think me awful
for taking one so young you need to know there are 5 hawks in the
thicket and she would not have survived very long. I think her mother
knew that and sent her meowing toward my mother's home. She will be
loved and cared for all of her days. This little one was born about
the time Dixie was leaving and is a favorite color of Dixie's. This
makes things easier.

I've been off this list since the server problem. I am so shocked and
 saddened to
hear about Dixie. I know how much you loved her and can imagine how
 difficult
it must be without her. She is so lucky to have felt safe and loved.
 I am so sorry.
