Re: [Felvtalk] eye (pupils) changes and transport

2009-09-28 Thread Heather
I had a kitty with uneven pupils, the vet felt it was a tumor but she also
had toxoplasmosis and I suspected that was what it was as it did seem they
normalized after treatment. She was feral, FIV+, toxo CRF, and did
great for 9 months with fluids and care, no further eye problems, we had to
let her go due to a urinary issue that was making her very uncomfortable and
meds were not helping.

This was Bobbi, a 15 year old FIV+ retired campus feral--quite a
remarkable girl!

I believe uneven pupils can be caused by a number of things and when I told
my vet before we trapped her and got her in, her first guess was
hypertension.

Good luck to Ember!

Ember had a good vet visit. I wish I could convey everything that the
vet said. He doesn't know what's causing the situation. We decided to
send out for a toxo titer, despite the lack of lesions when he looked
into her eye.

He also gave me some symptoms to watch for if this is actually
something serious, which include third eyelid showing, lower lid
drooping, mouth slacking and some drooling, and of course, the
disparity between the pupils getting worse. Please keep Ember in your
thoughts and prayers.

[Felvtalk] eye (pupils) changes and transport

2009-09-24 Thread Lance

Hello List,

It's been a long time since I've posted anything, and I must admit
that I haven't been keeping up with posts for quite awhile. Some of
you may remember that I have an FeLV+ named Ember. She's still with
me, though I have noticed something different lately, and I have
another question about transporting her.

In the last week or so, I've noted that Ember's pupils are sometimes
not the same size. I did a search for anisocoria and found nothing in
the archives. Has anyone seen this occur in their cats? It seems to be
similar to how headaches are in people... could be just normal stuff
all the way up to being a really serious issue. The articles seem to
indicate that this can happen with viral infections like FeLV, but
other than low wbc, there aren't any symptoms. It doesn't really make
sense.

Ember's last CBC had an especially low white blood cell count... I
think it was 4.2. She's been on interferon ever since testing positive
in 2006, and while I'd taken her off DMG, she's going back on it as
soon as I get my shipment.

Also, it looks like I'm going to be moving back to Madison, Wisconsin.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to get Ember to our new home.
I'm willing to pay to fly the both of us up (with her being in the
cabin with me), but I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas or
tips they'd be willing to share. I know that transport is frequently
done by so many of you, which is why I ask this here.

My best to all of you and your cats,

hi, lance! going back up to the frozen north, huh?

as one who transports FeLVs and FIVs and other special-needs kitties all the
time, the best bet is what you mentioned: be her chaperone, with her as
carryon luggage. that way she's never out of your care; her plane ticket
will be between $100-200 (and for that she doesn't even get a seat!)--fares
have just gone up, i'm told.

as for the uneven pupils, i have heard that it's seen in FeLVs, but it's
also seen in negatives--but it can be a number of things, from neurological
insult to an infection. because she IS FeLV, and has the wbc thing going on,
i'd hie me to the vet

Hi Lance!
I transported a rescue kitty to her new mommy in Seattle once in the
airplane cabin. Check out the internet for suggestions. I do NOT recommend
tranquilizing her as she might be more confused. I did take a blanket to put
between the kitty and side of the plane to protect her from the cold air (I
suggest a window seat). I padded the carrier with puppy pads so I could just
take out a layer if she urinated (she didn't and it was a long trip with a
layover in Denver). I had a small weighted bowl to offer water. One thing
about airline travel is you might have to vaccinate her for rabies. I had a
collar and ID on kitty and also brought a harness and leash (for our layover
which we spent in the ladies bathroom in the red carpet club so she could
walk about). I had a small Tupperware container with litter that I offered
in the bathroom but she didn't use it. She didn't drink water either. I did
not have to take her out of the carrier in the security area. Not sure if
they require that now...probably. I did take a towel to hold the kitty in
case I DID have to take her out.
Good luck and welcome back to the Midwest!

Re: [Felvtalk] eye (pupils) changes and transport

2009-09-24 Thread Chris
Ah traveling w. kitty. I've flow w. my Tucson as well as some rescue
kitties several times. Each time I packed my backpack with everything
cat-LOL (throwaway cardboard litter box, dry food, water, puppy pads, and
on and on). NEVER did I use any of those things. I use a soft sided Sherpa
bag-medium side. Airlines will tell you that a Sherpa bag is approved but
you'll find that they run tv movie cables under the seat making it
impossible to really slide the bag under. Get a window seat and put your
legs in front of it and they'll never notice.

I try to get a seat where there's no one next to me so that after takeoff, I
can put the carrier on the seat--more for me than the cat, believe me!

I always put a harness on with their tags, etc. Only rough time is when you
go through security--they make you take the cat and go thru the metal
detector while the carrier goes through the xray machine. Its s much
fun--we know how cats like crowds strange noises! I usually open the top
clip a leash on the harness. I wrap the leash around my arm then pick
the cat up by draping a big towel around it so that it can't see ANYTHING!
Then I drape the toweled cat over my shoulder ignore the claws digging
into my skin. You quickly go thru and race to the end of the conveyor belt
to stuff the cat back in the carrier. Do NOT unhook the leash until the top
of the carrier is almost zipped shut.

Sounds awful but the weirdest thing is that during the entire time, the cat
will just sit silently glaring at you. I know they're thinking of ways to
pay you back for this indignity. They won't eat, drink, purr, meow--they
just glare! And of course, sleep! They don't get nervous--its we humans
that are the wrecks...

Lance it is great to hear from you. I realized that you were MIA a

I've not had experience with the pupil anomaly but MC's advise about
a vet check sounds right since her wbc

was low. She might be fighting an infection.

Also, Laurie's travel advice is right on. Keep her warm and let her
know that you are right with her. Putting her back on DMG will

you can request a private x-ray screening, too--they have separate rooms
with their own little machines, and you have to take the kitty out of the
carrier and let them make sure she's not carrying bombs strapped to her

Hey Lance, nice to hear from you. The only time I've had that happen
with the pupils being different sizes is with an FIV+ kitty, can't say
what caused it or what it related to.

Re air travel: The last time I flew with a cat in the cabin - which
was probably 2004 or thereabouts - was taking a cat from Little Rock
(where I live) to Minneapolis/St Paul. Airports were just getting
acclimated to the post 2003 airport procedures. I fortunately had a
harness on the kitty, and she was inside the soft sided carry on cat
carrier.

As we approached the airport scanner, thy told me to take her out of
the carrier and carry her separately. But THEN they told me to take
my shoes off (lace up running shoes), which was interesting while
carrying a cat - and put the shoes, carrier, purse, etc, on the
moving belt to the separate xray scanner.

Then I carried her thru the airport security scanner, with her carrier
going thru separately. Glad I had the harness and leash. I had cat,
then had to retrieve purse, carrier, shoes, etc, and reassemble
myself. It was no fun.
