JD,

Go into MIDI Set-up in the MIDI menu in the menu bar, and make sure the
midi system selected is CORE MIDI. Check the listing of input and
output devices in the same window. Did you wire your devices properly
in the auto set-up window? You may need to drag wires from in-ports to
out-ports.

[Finale] Odd flip

2003-12-09 Thread Herman S. Gersten
I'll further clarify my problem:

Using FinMac 2003:

I have a score in which the percussion set-up is 2 one-line staves and
one five-line (timpani) staff.

I am able to enter notes on the top one-line staff and the timpani
staff, and flip them normally with speedy entry (f).

When I try to flip notes on the SECOND one-line staff, the stems are
greatly reduced in length, with only the flags showing. .

The only fix I can come up with is to drag the stems to their normal
length using the special stem tool.

What might be causing this stem-length problem, which I have never seen
before?

[Finale] MIDI problem

2003-09-21 Thread Herman S. Gersten
One of my files plays back nicely from the score.

I created a Finale MIDI file which greatly speeds up the tempo, and
causes a huge slowdown and freeze on a ritard near the end.

Is this a problem with Quicktime Player or the Finale file?

I am using FinMac 2003 on a G4 in Classic mode.

[Finale] Charge for commission

2003-09-16 Thread Herman S. Gersten
Andrew,

Actually, you are the only one who knows what your time is worth. Why
not estimate how many hours you will spend composing the commissioned
work and multiply by your hourly rate?

There must be some cut off point at which you know you will not do the
work. Don't charge less per hour for composing than you would for
engraving. If the group really wants you to write them a piece, and no
other composer will fill the bill, then they will pay what you ask. If
you work for cheap or for free, then that's all you can ever expect do.

As some other listers have indicated in the past, $50 to $60 per hour
seems about right.

Herman -

My understanding of the intended (albeit limitied) function of this
plug-in
is:
It goes through your selected area and displays dynamics based on the
midi
key velocity found in that region. So if you use speedy/simple to
enter your
data, chances are good that everything will be pegged around an mf. I
know it's
not what I need it to be.
Thanks John,

Am I right in assuming that dynamics cannot be placed as easily as
articulations? If I want to place a few identical dynamics in several
measures, must each one be done manually? The dynamic placement plug-in
is almost at the point where it might allow the placement of ANY
dynamic.

[Finale] Image retention of deleted objects

An annoying result of deleting and re-positioning various objects such

Is this par for the course? If not, how can it be eliminated?

Yes. And I'm using FinMac 2003a.

If you go into update options and ask for systems to flow across pages, you can get rid of the duplicated staff.

Trying to delete the extra system causes even more problems.

[Finale] Speedy MIDI entry

2003-03-30 Thread Herman S. Gersten
Dear list,

When entering notation from a MIDI keyboard into a transposing staff
such as the clarinet part of a score, are the MIDI notes supposed to be
automatically transposed as they are entered, or are they entered in
concert pitch only?

If they are supposed to be automatically transposed as they are
entered, what might cause them to be entered in concert pitch.

[Finale] Andrew Stiller's quote of John Cage

2002-12-30 Thread Herman S. Gersten
Andrew Stiller wrote (in part) on Dec. 28:

After a 1975 performance of his _Song Books_ in that manner, Cage
had a lot to say, among which:

Last night when I heard the S.E.M. Ensemble play Song Books, I
regretted that I composed it. I regret that my work now exists as
something so widely mnisunderstood.

As a performer with Petr Kotik's S.E.M. Ensemble for a period of more
than 10 years, and as Director of the Ensemble's educational program, I
have witnessed the closest collaboration between Petr Kotik and John
Cage. A wonderful highlight of that collaboration was the Tribute to
John Cage held at Carnegie Hall for an international audience, in
which an Mr. Kotik conducted the full version of ATLAS ECLIPTICALIS
with an orchestra of 86 players. As part of the educational program
created by S.E.M., Petr Kotik invited Cage to attend a student
performance of his music at John Dewey High school in Brooklyn, NY.
After the performance, Cage totally fascinated a large audience of
teachers and students with his poetry readings, humor and musical
ideas. Not a word about being misunderstood.

I have never witnessed anything but total respect for and intense
dedication to the music of John Cage by the members of the S.E.M.
Ensemble and the S.E.M. Orchestra. Until his death, Cage frequently
attended S. E. M. rehearsals and performances of his music. If anyone
is misunderstanding Cage's music, it cannot be S. E. M.'s music
director, Petr Kotik, whose performances and recordings of Cage and
other avant-garde composers have received the highest praise around the
world.
