RE: [Finale] Re: Hope there is a Finale Free 2004 for OSX
I understand why the Make Music folk are reintroducing copy protection after an experience yesterday. One of my students at the local Conservatorium was given a Finale 2003 CD by a high school teacher to take home and copy. I wonder how much of this goes on? He doesn't seem to know how to use it, but! copy protection doesn't matter David. Cracked versions get around it and aren't hard to find. There is a high school in my area where the music Head is dishing out cracked version of all the major stuff (Sibelius, Cubase, Reason, etc.) He basically sets his student's computers up with everything. I think you can even bring your CPU in to the school for the treatment! I have seriously thought of taking him down. After all, his students are being ranked against mine in the HSC with an illegal advantage. RockyRoad. -- ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: Screen Rotation (was [Finale] Dead OS9)
The lack of screen rotation is actually the rich, meaty, heart of my beef with OSX. And it brings this message squarely back on-topic. Simply put, if you are a Finale user and you've never used screen rotation, it's like you've never had sex. The first time I looked at an orchestra score in screen rotation, it was near orgasmic. When I've shown it to other experienced Finale users, the catch in their breath is palpable. But you don't only need to be doing orchestra scores. I now won't do *any* page layout without it. With LCD monitors priced as they are now, screen rotation is available to more and more people. Much as I despise Micro$loth, if OSX does not have a screen rotation solution by the time I need my next computer, my next computer will be Wintel. Re: Screen Rotation (was [Finale] Dead OS9)
RockyRoad wrote: Does this really matter on a 21 monitor running 1600x1200? It is precisely on monitors of this size where screen rotation really begins to kick in for Finale users. (FWIW, what gave me the rush was rotating a 24 LCD panel that is 1920x1200.) The reason is that you have enough horizontal resolution in portrait mode not to feel particularly constrained, and the 1600 (or higher) vertical dimension has to be experienced with a music score for its Finale power to be fully understood. Actually, I think the big payoffs begin with 1280x1024. If you have a 1280x1024 or larger screen (even a CRT) running Windows, you can get an idea what it's like by downloading the free Pivot Pro demo from portraitdisplays.com. With minimal effort you can rest a CRT on its side for a demo. (It may play havoc with the colors to rest it on its side, but it recovers when you set it back upright.) Look, I don't suggest you would always work with a monitor like this in portrait mode. Many programs (e.g., Protools) are much better in landscape. But Finale, esp. for orch. scores or any page layout, is a dream with a hi-res monitor in portrait. Both Pivot Pro (Win) and MacPortrait (OS9) allow you to switch as needed with a single keystroke. The tech tips on my website include a faq on how you can set up virtually any LCD panel, even ones from Apple, for screen rotation on demand. Fair enough. I always liked those Radius A4 displays back in the old days. Rotating a 24 LCD 90° would be fab for playing old vertical scrollers like Galaga and Galaxions! -- David Stonestreet - Coming to you from Sydney Australia. [Finale] Re: The Panic Room
If it makes anyone feel any better, there is a much worse copy protection scheme out there than Finale 2004's challenge-response scheme, and, believe it or not, even worse than Sibelius'. Try upgrading Logic versions from emagic. Firstly there is a brand-new dongle that has to be plugged into the USB port (yeah, like that's really reliable). Secondly, there is also a challenge-response system by which you have to fill in your details on an EXACT piece of paper, in an EXACT envelope, with your EXACT original CD and original old dongle to be sent to your distributor, at your own expense, who then forwards it by mail to Germany. Eventually they email your return code back (mine took about 9 weeks). Yes. I prayed every night that my dongle would make it there safely. To make it even worse, in order to upgrade from, say, Logic 4 to Logic 6, you also have to pay the full expensive upgrade fee to Logic 5, even though you didn't get to use it, it all adds up to a giant I'd prefer to use a cracked version disaster. I think there's a circle in Hell for the paranoid programmers who conceived this rubbish, and I sincerely hope that Makemusic doesn't decide to follow their lead. And after all the hoops emagic makes you jump through - they won't give us an electronic copy of the manual because it might encourage piracy of the software!! -- David Stonestreet - Coming to you from Sydney Australia. ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] RE: 2004 Panic
Q. Does Finale 2004 have copy protection? A. No. It does, however, require software registration within 30 days of installation. Failure to do so will temporarily disable printing and saving until you do register. You may also install Finale on two machines (on the same platform ñ an additional platform disc is $50) for your personal use under one serial number at no additional charge. Q. Does finale have some in built protection to prevent the unauthorized duplication of full use copies of the program, beyond the limit of two? I would say the answer is yes. Isn't that copy protection? ie. protection against [unauthorized] copying? My installation of Native Instrument's Reaktor software uses challenge-response protection - they call it copy protection as far as I know. PS: The system is acceptable to me. Sibelius apparently manages the transfer of licenses from one machine to another via floppies, which strikes me as not such a great idea. (What do Mac users do?) I would say that finally, after 20 years of IBM PC compatible floppies, we have a successor to the floppy which fits into ALL personal computers sold for a few years now: the USB stick where 128MB is an often-sold capacity.
