[Fink-beginners] Whatis the difference between DarwinPort and fink?

2006-07-09 Thread Heinz Nabielek
-rwxr-xr-x 2 root admin 17508 Jul 2 06:05 /opt/local/bin/octave-2.1.72
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 22216 Jun 28 00:01 /sw/bin/octave-2.1.72

shows my two versions of octave, one installed by DarwinPort and
one installed by fink.

They seem to perform identical and so they should.

What in the end is the difference between DarwinPort and fink?

Heinz

They are two different mechanisms by which you can install the same
software packages. They have different build engines and dependency
tracking. (for a Linux equivalent cf. rpm vs dpkg)

[Fink-beginners] Amarok and Fink - what's wrong?

2006-07-09 Thread Stephan Chudowski
Hello,

I tried to run amarok on OS X 10.4.6, but it doesn't work. I don't
want to run it in KDE Environment, i'd like it standalone...
I installed amarok via Fink-Commander from unstable-tree,
dependencies were resolved, packages comiled and installed and so on.
Konsole works fine, KWrite and Konqueror as well. Only amarok crashes
at Startup.
When I try to start amarok via terminal the error message is:

cannot connect to x server.

I installed X11 from Mac OS X DVD 10.4.6.
So I googled it and found http://www.nabble.com/amarok-cannot-find-X-
server-t1809696.html

Results: in /tmp/kdelog:

When I run amarokapp in terminal, again it cannot connect to X Server.

Right. You have to set the DISPLAY environment variable in Terminal
to allow connections to the X11 environment.

But when i doubleclick amarokapp in Finder, it shortly starts up for
 a second and then crashes.

That's right also--the Unix apps aren't really runnable in the Finder.

Removing amarokrc doesn't bring any Changes. Only Difference: The
amarok Wizzard starts and asks for the folders to scan and so on.
When amarok itself wants to start it crashes.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance for any hints.

I didn't see any obvious (to me) cause for the crash otherwise.
