I am having trouble getting pan to run. I would like to ensure that no one has to install Fink and darwinports, simply because they need one or two packages that Fink does not offer yet. I agree with you though. Yes using Apple's X11. I tried reinstalling it but the download from Apple's site said I have newer software. The downloadable version is for 10.3 only. You'll have to find it from your 10.4 install media. I was running pan fine, but since the last time I have updated to the latest fink and 10.4.7 That's surprising, since updating Fink in no way would have touched your X11 libraries.
