Any idea which specific one triggers this symptom? If it's that easy 
to do (even if it fails validation), we should try to provide a nicer

Yep, got the same glitch when I self updated fink this morning, with even 
lengthier error messages. A second self update immediately afterwards cured the 
issue.

You run selfupdate at about 11AM-ish 1/19/2012 PDT. It goes away when
you re-run it. (At least that's what happened to me.)

Maybe a comma in a Type field attached to the package's name, e.g.

Info2 : 
Package: foo-oct%type_pkg[oct]
Type: oct (3.4.3, 3.6.0)
...

The package names still get resolved correctly in such a case.
