Re: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-16 Thread Kevin Roche

Michael,

There is almost certainly a need to discuss the framework stuff and if there was a separate list I would be part of it. Right now I am still learning Flex (never really used 1.0 or 1.5) so would want to be part of that too. I suspect that many people would like to take part in both. Perhaps later would be a better time to split. In the meantime we can learn both aspects of the new paradigm.

I am curious,

Does anybody see the need for a list that deals with framework
development/component development.

As Flex matures there is definatly a split now between application
developers and framework developers. I have posted 4 things in the last 2
days that havn't been answered(This means nothing to me, just pointing
something out), they have dealt with the framework side of programming.

Sometimes I don't post stuff on this list becasue it seems to technical on
the programming/framework side. I know this list is intended for
applications. Is there enough framework developers out there that would like
to share the experiences enough to warrent some other dev list?

Peace, Mike

[flexcoders] Creating popups and accessing them thru a link bar - please help

2006-05-16 Thread bobpardoe1959

I am creating a number of popup children within my app. I create them
as titlewindows and then create a linkbutton on a link bar as each one
is created.

This works fine.

I then need to find a way of bringing one of the popups to the front
by clicking on the appropriate link button. This is where it is
causing me to lose the will to live.

Which collection to the popups live in. The docs say
SystemManager.popupChildren - but I cant find them.

I have named the title windows and link button the same so that I can
get the popup by name if needed - I just cant find the collection.

I am trying to do all of this in the function invoked by my
MouseEvent.CLICK listener

Please help

thanks

[flexcoders] FB2 beta 3: mapping VO's using webservices (repost)

By the lack of responses, I assume this is not possible.
Can anyone confirms this?

Subject: [flexcoders] FB2 beta 3: mapping VO's using webservices

 Wonder if it's possible to map server side VO's to ActionScript classes when using webservices.
 Couldn't get it to work in FB beta 2 and now tried again in beta 3 and it doesn't seem to work.
 Maybe I'm just missing a piece of the puzzle.

 Things work fine when using Remoting (RemoteObject) but when I switch to Webservices, the mapping does not take place.

 Using ColdFusion, I'm sending an Array of VO's (cfc component)
 When I loop throught the Array in Flex and trace the properties of each item in the array, I get the following:

 catID = 4
 xsi:type = ns2:BlogCategoryVO
 xmlns:ns2 = http://vo.blog.muzakdeezign.com.services
 catName = Coldfusion

 catID and catName are both properties of the cfc component.
 xsi:type and xmlns:ns2 is added by the webservice/coldfusion I guess.

 So it seems the info for the mapping (xsi:type, xmlns) is there, but there's no mapping going on.

 Anyone know if this is supposed to work, and if so, how?

 kind regards,
 Muzak

RE: [flexcoders] cairngorm phone sample and new Stateless Commands mod

2006-05-16 Thread Benoit Hediard

Hi,

You can download the updated version for beta3:
http://www.benorama.com/flex/samples/PhonesCairngorm2.zip

Or add default null argument to the onResult and onFault command methods.
Ex: public function onResult(event:ResultEvent = null):void

Objet : [flexcoders] cairngorm phone sample and new Stateless Commands mod

I'm using Benoit Hediard's cairngorm 2 version of the Phone sample and the
latest Caringorm2 framework which includes changes to the way commands are
called to make them stateless:

http://weblogs.macromedia.com/swebster/archives/2006/05/cairngorm_2_for_1.cf
m

the change to the call in phones.ApplicationController.as was easy enough
(as per article) but I'm lost (all still very new to me) on changes needed
to the phones' commands

this affects both
public class PhoneGetCommand implements Command, Responder {...} public
class PhoneListGetCommand implements Command, Responder {...}

Interface method onResult in namespace
org.nevis.cairngorm.business:Responder is implemented with an incompatible
signature in class
com.mycompany.phones.controller:PhoneListGetCommand.
(PhoneListGetCommand.as
line 17)

any suggestions?
thanx

PS:

I'm also getting a:

Implicit coercion of a value with static type Object to a possibly
unrelated type Array. PhoneListGetCommand.as
phones_cairngorm2/com/mycompany/phones/controller line
33

public function onResult(event:ResultEvent):void {
 model.phones = new ArrayCollection(event.result); /** HERE **/
 model.applicationState = ApplicationView.STATE_DEFAULT; }

PPS: there's also an unneeded
//import org.nevis.cairngorm.samples.login.commands.LoginCommand;

in ApplicationController.as
but I'm nit-picking and grateful Benoit made this sample.

Re: [flexcoders] FB2B3 programmatically select an item in a ComboBox

2006-05-16 Thread jeremy lu

hi Gordon,

that's interesting, please bring it back here if you do get time to check it, thanks :-)

btw, my rationale behind this is: player don't have to evaluate the
whole chain during the loop by assigning it to a variable, but I might
just be wrong.

glad that helped.

adding var itm:* = cboCountry.dataProvider.getItemAt(i) might be a little
bit efficient.

That solved it!
The key is using the dataProvider.length instead of the ComboBox .length

 if (cboCountry.dataProvider.getItemAt(i).data ==
event.result.COUNTRY)

well, I believe all the getItemAt() methods are removed from List-base

to do the loop correctly, try this:

{
 var itm:* = cboCountry.dataProvider.getItemAt(i);

 if( itm.data == event.result.COUNTRY )

Well I dont know exactly what is wrong, but using flex builder it would
be pretty easy to set a break point on the if line of code and then
step through the loop to ensure that those to variables are what you think they
should be.

I use a mac and so my solution is to just use an alert to pop up the 2 items
each loop so I can compare them.

Give it a look, you might find that the two don't actually match up.

The other thing, is that if you are doing this on a tabnavigator or accordian
and the page you are setting has not yet been drawn then the items wont get
selected even if they match. If this is the case you might have to look
into the creationPolicy for the parent, to ensure the children are all created
before you try to set properties on them.

Hope that helps.

Greetings and thanks in

I have a ComboBox that displays a countries.
 The label is a country Name
 The data is a country code

I then retrieve a users record via AMF. Standard stuff with First Name,
Last Name etc.

I am populating various fields with the retrieved data, which is working fine.

Where I am stuck is on the country ComboBox. I want to select the
appropriate country for the user.

I expected something like this to work:

for(var i:Number = 0; i  cboCountry.length; i++)
{
 if(cboCountry.getItemAt(i).data == event.result.COUNTRY)

 {
 cboCountry.selectedIndex = i;
 break;
 }
}

I have yet to figure out how to loop through the ComboBox to match the users
country. Or if I even need to run a loop in FB2B3.

This has got to be a very common task, yet I am not finding any decent info on
an approach.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-16 Thread Michael Schmalle

 Perhaps later would be a better time to split.

Hi, I didn't mean actually split, I just meant have two 'data' sources that are specific to to completly different things.

I can tell you, if there eventually can be another functional list for
framework developers, I will still have flexcoders dialed in.

Peace, Mike

There is almost certainly a need to discuss the framework stuff and if

of that too. I suspect that many people would like to take part in
both. Perhaps later would be a better time to split. In the meantime we
can learn both aspects of the new paradigm.

Peace, Mike

Re: [flexcoders] Number of records in a Datagrid

2006-05-16 Thread Sreejith Unnikrishnan

From a usability point of view, it would
notbe a good ideato display 15,000 records.

Would you try this instead ...

  Fetch all the data, use lazy loader if necessary
  and store it as say 'fetchedData'
  Create an ArrayCollection 'filteredData'from
  the fetchedData, that contains about 100 records sorted in say alphabetical
  order
  Every time you click sort or you want to filter,
  act on 'fetchedData', get the first 100 records and repopulate
  'filteredData'
  If you want to include paging send a paramater
  that says get the next 100.

RE: [flexcoders] cf flex intergration

2006-05-16 Thread João Fernandes

John,

In the files I send you, you already have the ColdFusion
destination created. Its not in the flex-enterprise-services.xml because
for FDS, that file in fact includes all the others where destinations are
created. The ColdFusion destination is inside of the flex-remoting-services.xml.
If you look at flex-enterprise-services.xml you have this code

   services

    service-include
file-path=flex-remoting-service.xml /

    service-include
file-path=flex-proxy-service.xml /

    service-include
file-path=flex-message-service.xml /

    service-include
file-path=flex-data-service.xml /

    /services

This means that the FDS will read this 4 files. You could create
your own xml file with custom services as long you define here the include.  The
big difference is that when setting up a project as  Coldfusion Flash
Remoting Service it expects that your services destinations to be
created inside that file and not in an included one. I dont know if it
does process the included files when compiling.

When using the FDS integration, I define it as Flex Data
Services and compile at server and like that I wont have problems
with the destinations.

I might sound confusing , I hope not

Re: [flexcoders] Inline Design View Rich Text Editing - where?

2006-05-16 Thread Anant Gilra

The RichTextEditor does exactly that. mx:RichTextEditor/ is available in Flex2. (Are you using Flex 1.5?)Thanks,Anant.On 5/16/06, judah

Hi David,

In Flash you have the TextField in the toolbar. You drag that textfield
to the stage and then you can highlight and select certain words and
format them. You probably have about 20 different formatting options.
In Flex there is no toolbar with a textfield control on it. You can add
a text input, textarea or label component to the stage and double click
on it and a simple single text field appears but there are no options
to format the text.

So any formatting that I do I have to do I do by hand in the mxml
source code inside a text tag or if I'm there is a lot of formatting
I'll go into Dreamweaver, format it and then copy and paste it into the
mxml Text tag. But I heard that they are going to improve the inline
text tool. I just want to know where they are at and what to expect.

 I know Flex is for creating RIA's but I'm running into cases/places in my app where I'd like to format text information. What I'm doing now is jumping into Dreamweaver to edit html text that I then copy and paste
 inside a textarea htmlText tag. I'm not complaining. Flex has some killer features. What I want to know is if I should I fill out a feature request. Judah -- Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important

[flexcoders] MenuBar enable and disable items in MXML with dataProvider (f2b3)

2006-05-16 Thread Graham Weldon

Hi all,

I'm tinkering with a menubar and a toolbar. I am attempting to
centralize the enabling and disabling of functionality based on the
application's state, and I am using the ModelLocator from the cairngorm
best practices to achieve this.

At present I have a number of functionality items that appear both on
the text MenuBar and the icon-based Toolbar. I am able to manage a
boolean enabled state variable for each action, but would like this
variable to be used in the definition of a MenuBar.

I have a feeling that the manner in which I create the data for the
MenuBar might be hindering my data binding efforts on the MenuItems.
Note that in this example, when I use the text values true and
false, they are enabled and disabled appropriately. However, when
attempting to use data binding, they all remain enabled despite being
set to Boolean false.

Here is MyMenuBar.mxml
Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

Regards,
Graham Weldon

[flexcoders] RTE htmlText img tags

2006-05-16 Thread phillmidwinter

I've been using the RichTextEditor control in Flex2b3 and am trying to
insert img tags for, well, images into the htmlText.

I've inserted other html tags into the htmlText such as a for links
and general text formatting p etc. The img tag though is removed
either at rendertime in the flash or is not passed through to the
database correctly (highly highly unlikely).

Is anyone able to fathom whether this is some bizarre lack of support
or an actual bug? I realise the RTE was only re-implemented recently
but this is slightly insane.

[flexcoders] TreeMenu access to higlighted item

2006-05-16 Thread Federico Ferri

i want to create in a tree, a custom contex menu in function of the item
highlighted.
I'm able to create a custom context menu, but with the beta 3 i'm not able to
capture the highlithed item any more
i mean that i don't know how to get the target of the highlighted Item, the
one on which i put my mouse and open my context menu (click on the right
button)

With Fex2 beta2 this code was working, now i'm not able to recreate it with
the beta3, the mouseEvent.currentTarget.highlightItem doesn't exist...
-
public function changeContextMenu(mouseEvent:MouseEvent):void {
 if( mouseEvent.currentTarget is Tree
mouseEvent.currentTarget.highlightItem != null){
  switch ([EMAIL PROTECTED]()){
   case agent:
 mouseEvent.currentTarget.contextMenu=generateAgentContextMenu();
 cxaActiveItem = mouseEvent.currentTarget.highlightItem;
break;
   default:
 mouseEvent.currentTarget.contextMenu=new ContextMenu();
break;
  }
 }
}
-

thank you for you reply,
bye, Federico

[flexcoders] Flex 1.5: Using columnName + labelFunction in a DataGrid

2006-05-16 Thread nahruka

Hi all,

Please, how can I get the data value of a DataGrid cell when the
DataGridColumn uses a labelFunction?

--
mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Full name columnName=fullname
labelFunction=getFullName editable=false /
--
private function getFullName(item: Object, columnName: String): String {
 var str;
 item.FULLNAME == undefined?
 str=null :
 str=item.FULLNAME.FIRST+ +item.FULLNAME.LAST;
 return str;
}

For example, should

myDataGrid.dataProvider.getItemAt(0)[fullname]

return John Smith ?

I always get an undefined value...

Thanks!

 I've been using the RichTextEditor control in Flex2b3 and am trying to

The improper support (the buggy implementation?) of inline images in
Flash HTML text fields has always been a topic of complaints. Third
party developers have come up with RTE solutions (like the
flashTexteditor component from Flashloaded), but after all they are
not very reliable when it comes to inline images.

Even if you edit the HTML source code directly, the inline images
rarely behave as expected. They do not align properly with the text,
etc. I guess Macromedia knew about the shortcomings in this area, and
that's why the standard Flex RTE component doesn't support inline
images at all. This is definitely an area that needs improvement.

RE: [flexcoders] Are ViewHelper and ViewLocator deprecated in Cairngorm 2?

2006-05-16 Thread Alistair McLeod

Hi Michael,

In your complex value object case, here's what we'd recommend now.

In your command, put the complex object in your model (ModelLocator),
eg.

ModelLocator.getInstance().complextData = theResultFromTheServer;

Now, in your view, you bind to that model item, but call a utility class
to massage the results into the format you want. eg,

mx:Label text={ MyUtilityClass.formatDataToSomethingSimpler(
ModelLocator.getInstance().complexData ) } /

Now, you could possibly call MyUtilityClass a view helper, in the broad
sense of the pattern, but extracting it this way lets you, for example,
unit tests it's functionality and keeps the Model and View separate.

Cheers,

Ali

I am using the viewLocator and viewHelper in a fds2b3 prototype, and
they function correctly, although a post from Steve Webster states
that:

My quick response is that we really don't anticipate you needing to use
ViewHelpers as much (if at all). Use ModelLocator instead (that's why I
left it out the article series

However, I think I understand when you say that:

It seems that the command class has no idea where the view is.

Thus I use the command class to set the variable, and that is all. If I
have a complex value object that I need to iterate through to get single
value to be displayed in a view (although I know that there might be
arguments for doing all this on the java layer, however ...), I would
rather call a viewHelper to handle this (one that is linked
intrinsically with a view) rather than fill the command class with
business logic.

So ... this is probably a long winded way to say that, 'yes' the
viewHelper and viewLocator work fine in fds2b3.

Hi all,

I just donwloaded the latest cairngorm framework for fb2 beta 3. I found
that the viewhelper and viewlocator are still included in the package. I
remeber (please correct me if I'm wrong) that these two classes are
deprecated for flex 2.

If this is the case, then suppose a command class needs to update a
view, should it only do that throuhg ModelLocator class. It seems that
the command class has no idea where the view is. For example, if a
command class need to set a label on a view to say downloading...
before start a webservice call and after the rpc call comes back, the
command class sets the label text to be empty. How should the command
class handle this situation if it does not know where the view is.

The only way that I can think of is to have a string variable in
ModelLocator class which is bound to the label text property. and then
command class can update the label text through this string variable.
I'm sure there is a better (best practice) way to update a view in a
command class. Please give me some hints.

Thanks
Larry

RE: [flexcoders] Using a logical AND in property.

2006-05-16 Thread Jason Hawryluk

I've tried about 10-20 different ways just can't seem to make it work. I
suppose that a function is the only way, but it's unfortunate. Being able to
compare 1 or more bound values in order to get the result would be very
handy in my particular case.

Below is the error I get.

Error: The entity name must immediately follow the '' in the entity
reference.

On a good note I did get this to work

{value1.selected==value2.selected}

but that will only do in certain circumstances.

Thanks for your help. I'm still trying to get Flex to do it, if anyone has
any ideas...

[flexcoders] Trade with ColdFusion guru: skilled work for expert training!

2006-05-16 Thread sbeladaci

Hello,

I am looking to
trade 10 to 20 weekly hours ofweb development in exchange for ColdFusion
and ActionScript training in the context of Flex RIA development. I am a multi
disciplinary expert with strong design and creative skills along with
exceptionally analytic mind and natural understanding of binary concept and
processes. I am currently self training to prepare a Flex and ColdFusion
certification, probably for September. I am half way with the whole Flash
Platform where I am pretty much done with the administration of all
servers(presentation, media and application) and reached proficiency with
MXML that I code by hand. I need to focus the 2 coming months on ColdFusion and
ActionScript syntax with goal to master both language by September.

I am primary looking
for coding support and programming assistance through email and IM
includingquick question / answer, small code fixes and
examples.

Kindest

Alistair,

View should be decoupled from this. This is not clear solution.

 Hi Michael,

 In your complex value object case, here's what we'd recommend now.

 In your command, put the complex object in your model (ModelLocator),
 eg.

 ModelLocator.getInstance().complextData = theResultFromTheServer;

 Now, in your view, you bind to that model item, but call a utility class
 to massage the results into the format you want. eg,

 mx:Label text={ MyUtilityClass.formatDataToSomethingSimpler(
 ModelLocator.getInstance().complexData ) } /

 Thanks
 Larry

RE: [flexcoders] Are ViewHelper and ViewLocator deprecated in Cairngorm 2?

2006-05-16 Thread Alistair McLeod

Hi Stanislav,

But it this instance, the data is being formatted for the view. Eg. We
get an array of totals from the server, which is displayed as a list on
one view, but as a total on a different view?

Initially, I might calculate the total in the view, and thereafter use
the extract method pattern to put the formatting logic in utility class.
That would also let us test it using FlexUnit.

Where would you propose that logic would go?

Cheers,

Ali

RE: [flexcoders] Wanted - A simple WSDL example

2006-05-16 Thread Peter Farland

You're running into the sandbox security restrictions of the Flash
Player.

In short, to contact a remote webservice without using the proxy service
the owner of the domain hosting the service would need to place a
crossdomain.xml file in their webroot and specify your domain in the
list of domains allowed to contact it from a Flash Player.

See:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/fplayer_security.html

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/fplayer8_security.html

This example doesn't take the fault event into account, something I
believe needs to be corrected. Modify the fault attribute of the MXML
tag mx:WebService to pass through the fault event to the errorCall
function:

fault=errorCall(event);

Then modify the errorCall function to handle the event:

 private function errorCall(event:FaultEvent):void
 {
 mx.controls.Alert.show(Web service failed! +
event.fault.faultString, Alert Box,
 mx.controls.Alert.OK);
 }

Make sure you remember to import the FaultEvent class too... You can do
so in the top of the mx:Script block:

 mx:Script
 ![CDATA[

 import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent;

// etc...

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Cairngorm microarchitecture. 2 instances of view with different data.

2006-05-16 Thread Steven Webster

Hey,

 1. Using this approach i'm loosing all advantages of flex
 data binding, cause if i make decomposition (i did) of my
 view, binding to specific property will be really painfull
 thing and has to be done by hands.

So I don't *quite* follow your example ... If you could even give some
psuedo-code of the difficulty you perceive, that might help me grasp
what you see as a problem. To me, the idea of achieving reuse is that
the same component can be used multiple times within one application,
and between different applications.

However, at the highest level of abstraction (within the Application
tag for instance), it's acceptable for me that a reusable component
receive it's data from some application-specific data store (the
ModelLocator in this sense), while any dependant children (components
that you decompose) receive their data directly from their parent.

Imagine (from my previous example) that you have:

MyView.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewA.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewB.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewC.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubSubView.mxml

So we have our MyView.mxml component from my previous email, but now we
can look deeper at it's implementation and recognise that it decomposes
into several dependant children.

Now if what you're telling me is that your MySubViewB and MySubSubView
components also need to fetch that data from the ModelLocator, then the
approach I'd suggest is:

view:MyView.mxml instanceSpecificData={
ModelLocator.getInstance().theData } /

But then if you look inside MyView.mxml, it would contain:

view:MySubViewB data="" /

Rather than:

view:MySubViewB data="" ModelLocator.getInstance().theData } /

So only the parent container (MyView) interacts with the ModelLocator -
once it has the data, it's dependant child objects My(Sub)+(View)*.mxml
- there's a reg-exp for you - simply receive that data from their
parent.

For me, this is the correct abstraction of when to get data from a
parent, versus when to get it from the model.

Make sense ?

 2. What about different set of delegates for every view
 (depends on server architecture)??

While I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that delegates should
have a one-to-one mapping with views (I don't know your app, so I can't
comment specifically), I see no reason why the delegate layer should
impact on this model/view binding strategy.

 3. Don't u think that restriction and freedom seems different?

Hey, I'm just a guy from the RIA practice. I'm not sure we have a
metaphysics practice. :-)

Best,

Steven

Maybe nobody responded since this was nota

What you should try to do is try some _javascript_ in
the HTML page that loads the SWF to do this.

To get started:

window.open(URL_of_the_MXML_FILE,window_handle,"toolbar=no,location=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no");

[flexcoders] Re: RTE htmlText img tags

I've never been much of a flash enthusiast but have seen a large amount
of trolling on the issue across the web - it's a pity that an otherwise
very useful control is let down by this ... It seems that there is not
one RTE that works properly anywhere! Flex could be the one if they sort
that issue.

[flexcoders] Image or mouse event changes from Beta 2 - Beta 3?

2006-05-16 Thread Jim Robson

Hello all,

The following code worked in Beta 2:

mx:Image id=laptop1
source={laptopImage} mouseMove=dragMe(event, laptop1, 'img',
laptopImage);myoffset(laptop1); x=400 y=80/

The function dragMe() was taken from a
drag-and-drop example in the documentation. It worked perfectly in Beta 2, and
life was good. Now that Ive upgraded to Beta 3, however, I cant
get any mouse event to work with these mx:Image tags. I have tried using
different mouse events (mouseDown, click) to invoke different functions,
including a simple function that does nothing but change the text in a text
box. Nothing seems to work. The functions never get called. No exception is
thrown. The Flash player (9 Beta 3) just seems to ignore the whole thing. Its
enough to make me feel unloved.

Did anything change with either the Image tag or mouse
events between Beta 2 and Beta 3? Could it be the fact that the images are
embedded SWFs? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or am I just missing
something obvious?

Ive searched the Adobe labs wiki but cant find
a reference to a change that appears to be relevant to this issue.

Jim

RE: [flexcoders] Using a logical AND in property.

I get the same error. The entity name must immediately follow the '' in

This should be simple, and for designers way less complicated then writing a
function, or dealing with bindable vars etc… to do the same kind of stuff.

I totally put this in the interaction designer domain space.

Thanks for your help.

That is a bug and I have logged it about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunatly, Adobe
said it was fixed in Beta3.

Being as this is beta, make your own 2 line function that centers it ;-)

I don't think Adobe would be stupid enough to name a function center that
does not center... bug... beta...

Peace, Mike

Please can we have a centre function that centres the centre not the edge

[flexcoders] How do I add additional header information with an HTTPRequest call?

2006-05-16 Thread charles.bihis

I am working with a web-service api, and in order for me to properly
make the api call, I need to add additional header information to the
http get request. There are examples in PHP and Perl and they have
functions that add additional strings to the header (curl_setopt()
with CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER argument in PHP, and $objHeader-push_header()
in Perl). There are other examples, but you get the idea.

Does anyone know how to do this, either in actionscript or in mxml?

  flexcodersHi Michael, In your complex value object case, here's what we'd recommend now.
   In your command, put the complex object in your model (ModelLocator),  eg.   ModelLocator.getInstance().complextData = theResultFromTheServer;
  Now, in your view, you bind to that model item, but call a utility class to massage the results into the format you want. eg, mx:Label text={ MyUtilityClass.formatDataToSomethingSimpler
( ModelLocator.getInstance().complexData ) } / Now, you could possibly call MyUtilityClass a view helper, in the broad sense of the pattern, but extracting it this way lets you, for
  example, unit tests it's functionality and keeps the Model and View separate. Cheers, AliAlistair McLeod

Don't u think that it's can be called view dependent on server? I
can descripe: we are creating social network and for user own
guestbook it has GuestBookDelegate with getMessages(),
addMessage(message : GuestbookMessage), removeMessage(messageId:
Number) methods. For different user guestbook we have another
delegate FriendGuestBookDelegate with getMessages(userId : Number),
addMessage(userId : Number, message : GuestbookMessage). I think
it's logical, cause i don't want to extend signature of
GuestBookDelegate by unnecessary information and i don't want to have
a possibility to call removeMessage if i don't have such
permissions.

To resolve this i can of course create Adapters for these delegates
that will cast them to same interface than make a set of workarounds
to support different delegates, BUT i don't like workarounds.

Can you describe me clean solution, or why we have one-to-one mapping
. Cause any view only renders data and must be completely separated
from data provider.

wrote:

 Hey,

  1. Using this approach i'm loosing all advantages of flex
  data binding, cause if i make decomposition (i did) of my
  view, binding to specific property will be really painfull
  thing and has to be done by hands.

 So I don't *quite* follow your example ... If you could even give
some
 psuedo-code of the difficulty you perceive, that might help me grasp
 what you see as a problem. To me, the idea of achieving reuse is
that
 the same component can be used multiple times within one
application,
 and between different applications.

 However, at the highest level of abstraction (within the
Application
 tag for instance), it's acceptable for me that a reusable component
 receive it's data from some application-specific data store (the
 ModelLocator in this sense), while any dependant children
(components
 that you decompose) receive their data directly from their parent.

 Imagine (from my previous example) that you have:

 MyView.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewA.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewB.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubViewC.mxml
 |
 +-- MySubSubView.mxml

 So we have our MyView.mxml component from my previous email, but now
we
 can look deeper at it's implementation and recognise that it
decomposes
 into several dependant children.

 Now if what you're telling me is that your MySubViewB and
MySubSubView
 components also need to fetch that data from the ModelLocator, then
the
 approach I'd suggest is:

 view:MyView.mxml instanceSpecificData={
 ModelLocator.getInstance().theData } /

 But then if you look inside MyView.mxml, it would contain:

 view:MySubViewB data="" /

 Rather than:

 view:MySubViewB data="" ModelLocator.getInstance().theData } /

 So only the parent container (MyView) interacts with the
ModelLocator -
 once it has the data, it's dependant child objects My(Sub)+(View)*.
mxml
 - there's a reg-exp for you - simply receive that data from their
 parent.

 For me, this is the correct abstraction of when to get data from a
 parent, versus when to get it from the model.

 Make sense ?

  2. What about different set of delegates for every view
  (depends on server architecture)??

 While I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that delegates
should
 have a one-to-one mapping with views (I don't know your app, so I
can't
 comment specifically), I see no reason why the delegate layer should
 impact on this model/view binding strategy.

  3. Don't u think that restriction and freedom seems different?

 Hey, I'm just a guy from the RIA practice. I'm not sure we have a
 metaphysics practice. :-)

 Best,

 Steven

Maybe you should take a look at the Cairngorm framework first before

been solved here. Steven Webster's six-part article series is an
excellent introduction:

[flexcoders] OLAP grid with Flex

2006-05-16 Thread jpastorius69

Hi all,
I would like to implement an OLAP grid component with Flex.
Is there anyone who can help on how to approch the development ?

The OLAP grid (Business Intelligence grid) should have the following
capabilities:

Drill-down drill-up of column and row headers
Pivoting of columns and rows
Swap axis

Do you think is it possible to play with grid renderers of a single
grid or should I think at three component (a tree on the left , a tree
on top and a grid) linked together ?

Thank you in advance

Alessandro

 item is never refreshed unless the list also scrolls. Scrolling the list
 will force the first item to redraw correctly.

I think you have to call refresh() on the collection.

You'd have to set the alignment style on the item renderer

[flexcoders] RE: Image or mouse event changes from Beta 2 - Beta 3?

2006-05-16 Thread Jim Robson

I sort of found the cause, but the
solution is not satisfactory.

I tried swapping a PNG for the SWF, and
the code worked. So I decided to see if I could make the SWF work. The original
file consisted of a button with nice rollover and down effects (i.e. a typical
Flash button). I removed the mouse effects and changed the instance symbol
behavior to MovieClip, and compiled it. The new SWF works with the Flex code
listed below. However, Ive lost my nice mouse effects. L

Adobe Flex Development Team: Is this a
bug? I hope so, and that youll get a chance to fix it. It would be a
shame if we cant use interactive Flash assets in our Flex applications!
(In fact, one of the reasons that my company shied away from OpenLaszlo is that
imported / embedded SWFs are not interactive.)

changes from Beta 2 - Beta 3?

Hello all,

The following code worked in Beta 2:

mx:Image id=laptop1
source={laptopImage} mouseMove=dragMe(event, laptop1, 'img',
laptopImage);myoffset(laptop1); x=400 y=80/

The function dragMe() was taken from a
drag-and-drop example in the documentation. It worked perfectly in Beta 2, and
life was good. Now that Ive upgraded to Beta 3, however, I cant
get any mouse event to work with these mx:Image tags. I have tried using
different mouse events (mouseDown, click) to invoke different functions,
including a simple function that does nothing but change the text in a text
box. Nothing seems to work. The functions never get called. No exception is
thrown. The Flash player (9 Beta 3) just seems to ignore the whole thing.
Its enough to make me feel unloved.

Is there a way to easily retrieve the data from dataProvider of an item

In my mind a simple getItemAt(index) should work but this method dosen't

Thanks

RE: [flexcoders] Are ViewHelper and ViewLocator deprecated in Cairngorm 2?

Hi Sanislav,

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying - are you saying you'd

I understand your goal of having a view that is re-usable,

But I propose to extract from view this

So after that you will have independent view that can be reused. Am I

   Hi Michael,   In your
complex value object case, here's what we'd recommend now.
 In your command, put the complex object in your model
(ModelLocator),  eg.
ModelLocator.getInstance().complextData = theResultFromTheServer;
  Now, in your view, you bind to that model item, but call a
utility class to massage the results into the format you want.
eg,   mx:Label text="{
MyUtilityClass.formatDataToSomethingSimpler (
ModelLocator.getInstance().complexData ) }" /   Now,
you could possibly call MyUtilityClass a view helper, in the broad
sense of the pattern, but extracting it this way lets you, for
example, unit tests it's functionality and keeps the Model and View
separate.   Cheers,

[flexcoders] Re: Cairngorm microarchitecture. 2 instances of view with different data.

2006-05-16 Thread Tim Hoff

Hi,

Let's take another crack at this. Please don't take offense by my
suggestions. I am trying to help you. To obtain a clean solution
for your application, I believe that you need to change your
approach slightly in two areas; delegates and views. Instead
of view dependent on server, think view dependent on user type.
I'll explain shortly. Secondly, in Cairngorm, delegates are nothing
more than proxies. In your case, instead of having delegates based
on user type or server, I would break them down into smaller
functional units. Instead of GuestBookDelegate and
FriendGuestBookDelegate, I would have getMessageDelegate,
addMessageDelegate and removeMessageDelegate. In the delegates,
depending on the user type, you would call one service (server) or
the other. You could do this conditionally or even with
overloading. The way that you currently have it setup, if you add a
feature (like updateMessage), you would have to add redundant
methods to 2 or more places. To my understanding, delegates create
a level of abstraction between a command and a service. They do not
act as control classes. Instead of controlling whether a user can
remove a message in a delegate, you can do it in the view. If the
user shouldn't be able to remove a message, don't display a visible
removeMessage button. Cairngorm events and commands are usually
initiated by user gestures. If the gesture isn't available to the
user, it will not occur. As a tip, you can control the visibility
of a button with a Boolean value that is bound to the ModelLocator.

As far as the rest of it goes, I think that I should call Shirley
McClaine. :--)

Hope that this helps,
Tim Hoff

should
 //impact on this model/view binding strategy.
 Don't u think that it's can be called view dependent on server?
I
 can descripe: we are creating social network and for user own
 guestbook it has GuestBookDelegate with getMessages(),
 addMessage(message : GuestbookMessage), removeMessage(messageId:
 Number) methods. For different user guestbook we have another
 delegate FriendGuestBookDelegate with getMessages(userId :
Number),
 addMessage(userId : Number, message : GuestbookMessage). I think
 it's logical, cause i don't want to extend signature of
 GuestBookDelegate by unnecessary information and i don't want to
have
 a possibility to call removeMessage if i don't have such
 permissions.

 To resolve this i can of course create Adapters for these
delegates
 that will cast them to same interface than make a set of
workarounds
 to support different delegates, BUT i don't like workarounds.

 Can you describe me clean solution, or why we have one-to-one
mapping
 . Cause any view only renders data and must be completely
separated
 from data provider.

same
 subj.

   1. Using this approach i'm loosing all advantages of flex

   thing and has to be done by hands.

  So I don't *quite* follow your example ... If you could even
give
 some
  psuedo-code of the difficulty you perceive, that might help me
grasp
  what you see as a problem. To me, the idea of achieving reuse
is
 that
  the same component can be used multiple times within one
 application,
  and between different applications.

  However, at the highest level of abstraction (within the
 Application
  tag for instance), it's acceptable for me that a reusable
component
  receive it's data from some application-specific data store (the
  ModelLocator in this sense), while any dependant children
 (components
  that you decompose) receive their data directly from their
parent.

  Imagine (from my previous example) that you have:

  MyView.mxml
  |
  +-- MySubViewA.mxml
  |
  +-- MySubViewB.mxml
  |
  +-- MySubViewC.mxml
  |
  +-- MySubSubView.mxml

  So we have our MyView.mxml component from my previous email, but
now
 we
  can look deeper at it's implementation and recognise that it
 decomposes
  into several dependant children.

  Now if what you're telling me is that your MySubViewB and
 MySubSubView
  components also need to fetch that data from the ModelLocator,
then
 the
  approach I'd suggest is:

  view:MyView.mxml instanceSpecificData={
  ModelLocator.getInstance().theData } /

  But then if you look inside MyView.mxml, it would contain:

Hello,

I am looking to trade 10 to 20 weekly hours ofweb
development in exchange for ColdFusion and ActionScript training in the context
of Flex RIA development. I am a multi disciplinary expert with strong design
and creative skills along with exceptionally analytic mind and natural
understanding of binary concept and processes. I am currently self training to
prepare a Flex and ColdFusion certification, probably for September. I am half
way with the whole Flash Platform where I am pretty much done with the
administration of all servers(presentation, media and application) and
reached proficiency with MXML that I code by hand. I need to focus the 2 coming
months on ColdFusion and ActionScript syntax with goal to master both language
by September.

I am primary looking for coding support and programming
assistance through email and IM includingquick question / answer, small
code fixes and examples.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: [F2B3] Class Library

2006-05-16 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hi,

Use classpaths.

I have one classpath that is hooked into subversion. IE c:/Flex/classes/com/teotiGraphix/...

I seperate Projects in FB2, but use the same classpath for SHARED core
things. But a component or application that needs it's own 'tear off
class file stub', I create it in the project directory. IE If you
wanted to zip up the 'component' dependencies without the core. Also,
it's a way to not look at everything at once.

This then acts as multiple layers that exist in that core classes class path.

Don't take my word for it, trying to find info like this is hard right now becasue Flex is still creating best proctices.

Peace, Mike

PS, I am a framework component developer and this works great for libraries that you speak of.On 5/16/06, Claudia Barnal

 Claudia,

 Maybe you should take a look at the Cairngorm framework first before
 you start from scratch. A lot of common design problems have already
 been solved here. Steven Webster's six-part article series is an
 excellent introduction:

[flexcoders] Re: Creating popups and accessing them thru a link bar - please help

2006-05-16 Thread bobpardoe1959

 Why not stick the reference returned by createPopUp() into the
 LinkBar's dataProvider?

Sorry to be so dim, but you could'nt show me what you mean could you ?

 It should be SystemManager.popUpChildren if you haven't specified a
 value for childList in the call to createPopUp()

According to the debugger SystemManager.popUpChildren is empty

Thanks

[flexcoders] Passing data between two datagrids

2006-05-16 Thread rgwilson26

I am working on an app (Flex 1.5) that passes data from the main
apps dataGrid and sends it to a popUp with another dataGrid. I have
some logic that will select all the data in the main apps datagrid
and send it to the popUp, but it only sends the last value in my
main apps dataGrid..

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to send all the values of my
main apps data grid to the popUps datagrid? I want the user to be
able to open the pop up with all the main app datagrid values so
they can add or delete them within the pop-up.

Below is some sample code.

[flexcoders] Capture a DisplayObject or UIComponent as a jpg? flex2b3

2006-05-16 Thread rigidcode

Can I (programmatically) get a jpg or bitmap of a DisplayObject or a
UIComponent as it looks in the browser? Like as a bitmap or jpg or
something.

What I really want to do is capture frames of an FLV, but I figure I
could do it if I could make a VideoDisplay and capture it's appearance.

Anyone?

For crawling I'm guessing this is find the data within a SWF app.
But much of the data is not in the SWF, and is instead in a database or
other repository which is called at runtime. I'm not certain what you're
hoping that the search engines would find.

Search engines do best with locating static things with an URL... for a
classic ColdFusion-style data merge people often create duplicate static
pages if they want the database contents to be searchable via the
standard engines.

The better path is usually to have a number of external resources
pointing to your hosting document, with anchor text used the search
terms under which you'd like people to find you. Rephrased, raw body
text is sometimes useful as search hits, but it's the inbound links
which really control the ranking.

Is this the type of info you were seeking? or...?
