Re: [flexcoders] Future Scope of Flex
4 years after the promise that HTML5 will change the world and will suppress any other technology for web sites and web applications, we don't see that happens. Flash is not dead, Flex is not dead and HTML/JS is getting some difficulties in the last 4 - 6 months to continue its growth as it was in later years. Maybe it's because people are tired of waiting a real change in HTML/JS stack and it's tools? seeing that they continue without getting the tools and facilities they had years ago with Flex and Flash? I don't know, but we can see lots of signals out there: * ActionScript 3 entering again in TIOBE list of 20 most used programming languages. I think latest week it climbed again to 17th position. * Adobe AIR getting more that 1 Billion apps installed (right now 1.8 Billion) in all desktop and mobile devices all over the world * Apache Flex getting lots of momentum with many people working on bug fixing and releases (near every month there's a new Apache Flex release) * The new framework FlexJS to use Flash or HTML/JS that continues developing. * HTML5 video is still crap and is still key technology in Google and Youtube * Adobe AIR strategy to code once and run in every desktop and mobile device is widely adopted (since Flex Apps running in Safari Mobile, the only scenario where Flash can not be deployed is not important anymore since people prefer Native Apps than Mobile Browser Apps, and Adobe AIR with Flex is a great solution for this purpose). In TIC, many people is getting frustrated of HTML and they are coming back to Flex again, since all the marketing buzz is now vanishing and they see that there's no productivity like before when you switch from Flex to HTML. Flex is not the king anymore since there's other options out there, HTML, native, but is still a very valid technology to make Apps for desktop and mobile, and for many the best. My own way of thinking is use each tech for what they were made for. So use HTML for web sites and marketing online (wordpress, and the myriad of other html techs out there), and use Flex for Application development for desktop and mobile (with Adobe AIR). For me using HTML to build apps or using Flex to build web sites is a wrong decision. Adobe said it will cost 5 years to HTML...well after 4 years and still nothing in the horizon that could us think that promise could be real, I think we have Flex for several more years still ahead.

see swfobject http://code.google.com/p/swfobject 2010/4/7 Angelo Anolin angelo_ano...@yahoo.com Dear FlexCoders, Is there an easy way to run a detection script to detect if Flash Player is installed on a browser? I have tried numerous javascripts / vbscripts / etc but most of them does not seem to work in my case. I also tried this site: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/future_detection.html to no avail. The problem is that I have different set of users who have their own preferences on which browser to use. Some uses IE, others FF and the others, Chrome. There are times that my compiled and embedded SWF object won't show in some of these browsers (although I have seemed to notice that they are more likely to fail in IE). Is there a much simpler method where on the loading of page, a script will be executed and if the Flash version is not the latest one, provide the user with the facility to download latest version and install? Re: [flexcoders] ADG editable cells dataprovider
The only one approach to that problem is to fill the dataprovider with data. That's the way list components works. I found the same problem and I had to go that way 2008/8/5 Josh Millstein [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a ADG with a dataprovider that is set dynamically. Problem is that when someone starts using my app there is no info in the dataprovider therefore not allowing me to click in the cells. I have the adg editable = true the colums editable = true , I put in some blank objects in the dataprovider, which is a half ass fix that is not going to work for other reasons. Re: [flexcoders] Performance Issues with AdvancedDataGrid
I was this days extending the component to do the same Excel funcionality. I conclude that using itemRenderers that extends UIComponent ends downgrading the performance of the grid. So I recomend to extend AdvancedDataGridItemRenderer although probably you'll have to sacrifice all the displayobject things you would like to do. Anyway, although ADG is a great component and makes easy to go the Excel way, many times is very hard to get with the right idea in order to get a cool performance. 2008/8/1 Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have an application based on a AdvancedDataGrid control that makes use of custom editors and renders to in many ways resemble Excel. Problem I am having is that if the user begins rapidly entering data the application will occasionally miss keyboard entry. I tried using the typical DataGrid method, of saving off the item index in itemRollOver, and using it to determine the index of the clicked item. However, with AdvancedDataGrid, the row index isn't particularly relevant. Or is there some way to convert the row index to the actual clicked item in the dataProvider?

I'd expect it to call fill once, but then the client fetches the data in pages. Starting in LC DS 2.5, we added a mechanism to page directly to the database. Currently it is limited in that you must set autoSyncEnabled=false for it to work before you call fill (though we hope to fix that limitation in the next release). To use this you implement the variant of the fill method which takes the start and count methods: Collection fill(List fillParameters, int startIndex, int numberOfRows); You also must override the useFillPage method and have it return true for that set of fill parameters. There are two options for determining the size of the collection that the client sees. It will call your assembler's count method with the same fill parameters. If that returns -1, it goes into a dynamic sizing mode where it makes the size of the collection on the client pageSize+1 items, then when that one missing item is fetched it ups the size to pageSize+pageSize+1, etc. until it hits the end. By default when you sort in the data grid (or apply any filters) it will page in all items automatically since the default behavior is to sort on the client. This can be inefficient so you might want to add the sort criteria to the fill parameters. You can then override the sort behavior in the data grid to call fill again rather than paging all of the items. You have FlexSession as well that you can use to manage session related things in your LCDS application Btw, remember you have a rich client and you can store state on the client so you really don't have to rely heavily on the old session metaphor. 2007/8/29, siva.flex [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi All, Anybody suggests me how to do session handling using FDS. Re: [flexcoders] Flex Component still active, even know TitleWindow it resides in, is deleted -
Hi Alex, I'm interested as well in the solution. My application have multiple window and I notice the problem with the observer tag, so I changed to ChangeWatcher that works better, but still notice the window is not removed from memory. Maybe the problem are the bindings to the model, but...how to clear bindings created in MXML with {} notation? Any light on this would be very appreciated Thanks in advance. C. 2007/6/4, Mike Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Okay, that helps explain things a tad - If this was yourself in this predicament, how would you go about handling this problem? I am just curious how I can force a Garbage Collection to take place, in order to remove this component from memory (and more important, to make it stop responding to my model changes - as this is happening on a very regular basis) Also, what would be the proper way to create a weak reference to my ApplicationModel, so that the corresponding resources get released, whenever the TitleWindow container gets blown away? Thanks in advance for your help - this is a topic that I've been needing to dive into for quite some time, and this would be a perfect opportunity to address everything. I have a Popup TitleWindow which serves the purpose of displaying details from a Master Grid. Among all the other controls housed within the TitleWindow, I am using the ObserveValue Component, which monitors a Boolean Value residing in my ApplicationModel. Once the user is finished looking at the Details, they must close the Window. I am using the PopUpManager.removePopUp() method of closing the TitleWindow, which should in essence, blow away the TitleWindow itself, in addition to all the Controls that reside within it. Even know the TitleWindow gets closed, I am still getting Trace Messages outputted to my custom Debug Window (which demonstrates the fact, that my ObserveValue Component is still active functioning). A quick note, I am tracing the output so that I can monitor my variables during development of my app. How is this possible?? I must get to the bottom of this ASAP, as this is causing some problems with the rest of my application. Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way. Re: [flexcoders] Prana: IoC container for AS3
I think avoiding repeated code would a great advance if we use an IoC container that allows us only create the different code and inyect the shared functionality. Another great thing is AOP that would be a great thing since many different objects must face equal behaviour and we could do this as as aspect and inyect it by configuration. Maybe the problem is to think about how we must to adapt this kind of functionality to AS3 and Flex and not simply copy from the java/spring world to Flex. But for me is clear that many improvements in the upcoming months could be done with frameworks like Pranaq 2007/4/20, Brian Lesser [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Carlos, et al, I have a question regarding the need for an ioc container for Flex as opposed to a pure AS3 or Flash project. Re: [flexcoders] Prana: IoC container for AS3
Hi Brian, I think you are referrin to Christophe and his project Prana, although I'd want to contribute if I can :) 2007/4/20, Brian Lesser [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Thanks Carlos, I'll be interested to see what you come up with. Right now I'm experimenting with the best way to use static methods to handle cross-cutting security concerns within custom components. For example a combo box may only be able to show certain options to a user based on the user's role. The combo starts off with all the options available but must filter them before displaying them. To do that it calls a static method of a RoleFilter class. I'm not sure if that's the best way to go about it though. Here's the script from within a custom combo box as an example: mx:Script ![CDATA[ import com.somecompany.security.RoleFilter; private function init():void{ filterData(); } public function filterData():void{ dataProvider = RoleFilter.filterArrayCollection(unfilteredCollection); } ]] /mx:Script Note: unfilteredCollection is just an ArrayCollection of objects. Now, that's not a lot of code, but what bothers me is that I'd rather my custom combo box not know anything about my RoleFilter class. In fact I'd prefer it not know anything about filters at all. So, even though this works fine, I'm trying to come up with something more elegant. So far having the combo box's container set this up hasn't looked right either. So again, I'm interested to see what you end up with. Yours truly, -Brian Carlos Rovira wrote: I think avoiding repeated code would a great advance if we use an IoC container that allows us only create the different code and inyect the shared functionality. [flexcoders] creationPolicy does not work on popups?
Hi, I'm facing a weird behaviour with creationPolicy in containers. I use the default creationPolicy to auto and have a component with a TabNavigator with this creation policy. If the instance of this component is created as usual all works fine. The problem shows as I turn this component into a TitleWindow and pops it with popup manager. In this new incarnation, the component fires the creationComplete event in other tabs not selected (not instantiated). This is a known effect of using a component in a popup manager?. I'm making test and this problem only shows when change from default mxml instantiation to a popup manager instantiation, so or this is a bug, or is something expected. -- ::| Carlos Rovira ::| http://www.carlosrovira.com ::| http://www.madeinflex.com

Thanks Igor, I tried this, but creationComplete executes as well...really weird :? But if I instantiated the component directly the creationComplete does not exectute, so I think this is due to the component beign a popup... Hi Steve, I was trying the same yesterday without no results. I was trying to do a file upload to a data base. I should add that this is for coldfusion standard and not enterprise so I cannot have a solution revolving around event gateways. TIA Steve On 4/7/07, Steve Gilchrist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: bump... It's small, and basically just a big form comprised of about 75 fields; radio groups, comboboxes, text inputs, etc. Each time a new form is submitted it creates one row in a large table. The form can be retreived and edited later, which just updates the values in that existing row. Since two or three people can have the same form (record) open at the same time, I would like to use FDS to manage the data and stop them from overwriting each other when they click save but... the FDS documentation and tutorials state in several places that you can only manage ArrayCollections of objects. Problem is that in my case I couldn't possibly pull over 3000 records into an ArrayCollection, it would be too big and slow. Is there a way to retreive and manage a single custom object containing a single form/record instead of an entire ArrayCollection of objects? Any examples or tutorials out there showing how to do this? Could I possibly use some function to identify select a single record, and then pull that one record over into an ArrayCollection that FDS would manage? That seems a little cumbersome. [flexcoders] List based components, FDS and UID bug
Hi, There's a problem in list based components (List, Tree, Datagrid,..). When we retrieve the same managed object from FDS and have more than one row, FDS set the same UID for those diferent rows, so a list based component shows a bad behaviour. For example, in a Tree if we open a node, other nodes representing the same node open and childrens shows a lot of problems (like rollOver errors,...). That's due to the same object sharing the same UID. As this is a problem with UIDs open since early betas in Flex 2, maybe this could be due to some known workaround that allows retrieve the same object with diferents UIDsAnyone knows some workaround to solve this bug in list components? I try to insert a random number in the server, but this is not the solution...maybe if I assign the UID in the server could solve the problem? [flexcoders] FDS commitRequired and 2 way binding
Hi, I was having some problems with the commitRequired property in the dataservice component when use 2 way binding. All works well until you have nested items. If you have a UserVO and an AddressVO inside the user. For example: mx:TextInput id=name_address text={ model.selectedUser.address.name_address}/ mx:Binding source=name_address.text destination= model.selectedUser.address.name_address/ Would make the commitRequired change from false to true as you expect. BUT, if it never change again to false if you turn back name_address to the old value. If you begin with name_address = abc and you change to abcd then all is ok (commitRequired = true). Now if you change back to abc, commitRequired should change again to false since there's no changes pending. This is due to the fact that we have a nested object and databinding needs to know about a full object change (assign a new address object to the property... with plain properties all works well. We came across a situation in a very large Flex2 application where we wanted to know the types of items inside of collections at runtime. I can provide more details if desired, but in short we are doing a lot of automatic detection of object and property types to make a running locally on xml version of the product work with very little pain and very little extra configuration. In Java 1.5, you can specify these types like this: ListContactVO foo; In Flex2, if you have something like this: var foo : ArrayCollection; There is obviously no way of discovering at runtime, by reading the class definition, what types of objects are meant to be in that ArrayCollection. So we took advantage of the metadata construct in Flex2 to create a sort of annotation, which would make the Flex2 example look like this: [Collection(type=ContactVO)] var foo : ArrayCollection; Now by reading the metadata of the property foo, we are able to determine at runtime both that foo is an ArrayCollection, and that it is meant to contain ContactVO object instances. This doesn't have the Java benefit of actually enforcing the fact that only ContactVOs are in the collection, but it at least allows us to make very useful convention-based assumptions. This is a pretty powerful option in my opinion, unfortunately Flex2 blindly throws out all metadata it doesn't understand. Through some google code searching, we were able to discover an obscure compiler option that looks like this: -keep-as3-metadata+=Collection This option would then make it such that Flex does not throw out [Collection] metadata. The problem is, this compiler option only works in DEBUG mode. In debug mode all of our code affected by this works beautifully and without fault (and would probably be a very useful tool to provide to the community). In RUN mode, it fails miserably. In short, Flex2 is ignoring these extra compiler options when not in DEBUG mode. We are no longer able to see the [Collection] metadata. Does anyone have any idea for working around this? We are using ANT for our builds, and I can guarantee that the -keep-as3-metadata compiler option is being used identically in all cases. Re: [flexcoders] [FDS2+Spring/Hibernate] VOs reaching the backend with id=0 (unsaved-value problem)
Hi Jeff, That was my first attempt. just before the persist method I was doing p.setId(null) That was enough for simple objets but fails if with complex objects that have a collection inside. If I add a new item to that collection I must to iterate and make a setId(null again. For that reason I was trying to set a global hibernate var that changes that behaviour from null to 0. Toplink does not have this problem and is works better with FDS2, but the only one problem is with exceptions. When an toplink throws an exception we have huge stack trace and FDS2 ends with a channel disconnected error. This seems to be an error with toplink essentials. So with hibernate we have the id problems and with toplink the exception problemvery frustrating :( On 1/19/07, Jeff Vroom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: FDS needs a way to indicate that 0 on the client side means null on the server… unfortunately that did not make it in 2.0.1 but I have it on my list for the next release. I assume the Java object has an Integer rather than an int so this is possible. This is recommended in Hibernate docs for id type fields: see http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/v3/reference/en/html/tutorial.html#t utorial-firstapp However, we usually don't manipulate the identity of an object, hence the setter method should be private. Apparently even though I was using only the getter method in my mxml, Flex didn't like the setter method being inaccessable. So the property was never returned.
