Re: [flexcoders] Future Scope of Flex

2014-08-16 Thread Carlos Rovira carlos.rov...@gmail.com [flexcoders]
4 years after the promise that HTML5 will change the world and will
suppress any other technology for web sites and web applications, we don't
see that happens. Flash is not dead, Flex is not dead and HTML/JS is
getting some difficulties in the last 4 - 6 months to continue its growth
as it was in later years.

Maybe it's because people are tired of waiting a real change in HTML/JS
stack and it's tools? seeing that they continue without getting the tools
and facilities they had years ago with Flex and Flash? I don't know, but we
can see lots of signals out there:

* ActionScript 3 entering again in TIOBE list of 20 most used programming
languages. I think latest week it climbed again to 17th position.

* Adobe AIR getting more that 1 Billion apps installed (right now 1.8
Billion) in all desktop and mobile devices all over the world

* Apache Flex getting lots of momentum with many people working on bug
fixing and releases (near every month there's a new Apache Flex release)

* The new framework FlexJS to use Flash or HTML/JS that continues
developing.

* HTML5 video is still crap and is still key technology in Google and
Youtube

* Adobe AIR strategy to code once and run in every desktop and mobile
device is widely adopted (since Flex Apps running in Safari Mobile, the
only scenario where Flash can not be deployed is not important anymore
since people prefer Native Apps than Mobile Browser Apps, and Adobe AIR
with Flex is a great solution for this purpose).

In TIC, many people is getting frustrated of HTML and they are coming back
to Flex again, since all the marketing buzz is now vanishing and they see
that there's no productivity like before when you switch from Flex to HTML.

Flex is not the king anymore since there's other options out there, HTML,
native, but is still a very valid technology to make Apps for desktop
and mobile, and for many the best.

My own way of thinking is use each tech for what they were made for. So use
HTML for web sites and marketing online (wordpress, and the myriad of other
html techs out there), and use Flex for Application development for desktop
and mobile (with Adobe AIR).

For me using HTML to build apps or using Flex to build web sites is a wrong
decision.

Adobe said it will cost 5 years to HTML...well after 4 years and still
nothing in the horizon that could us think that promise could be real, I
think we have Flex for several more years still ahead.

 Michael,

 In my deliberations as to whether to stick with Flex or not, I weighed the
 likelihood of a successful open-source Flex community. And, I must say I am
 not as hopeful as you. For one, we already seen how people failed to find
 interest in Open Laszlo. Second, the best and brightest contributors of
 open source communities often do so with the motivation/hope that one day
 their open-source project will be bought out by a major company and the top
 contributors will be duly compensated at that time. Well, who is going to
 buy out open-source Flex when it has already proved a failure to be a
 profitable product line for a major company?

Right the key point is maintain the AS3/Flex development platform and
export to JS. Nobody will change backwards to program JS if you taste AS3 ;)

 The general consensus is that

 a. People hate Flash. ( dont really know why!!! after reading all the HTML
 5 vs Flash articles... ) / Developers hate javascript ( atleast the people
 who like the OOP paradigm! ).
 b. Developers love AS3. ( Its the next best thing to chocolate! ) / People
 love nice UI.

 The holy grail is to create something that doesnt require flash but can
 be programmed with as3 or something similiar and runs on a browser
 without any plugin.

 Anyone care to illustrate to me what change since then?
 Do browsers in other devices really stick with one version of

 If between browsers, under windows, we don´t got a javascript running

 You don´t wanna flash? I can understand that. But you will need something
 real to get the juice. You will need RIA.

 JavaFX can be an option. Silverlight already is, once the win8 got to
 devices. But none of then will work on iOS. Probably only silverlight will
 work on win8/metro ( 'will not run plugins... a side the ones from
 microsoft' ).

 I will stick with flash/flex for the time being and still waiting on the

 All that adobe needs to do is, start attempting to replace the current

 Currently AS3 is a compiled language and JS is an interpreted language.
 Now can adobe come up with an interpreter for as3?

 I feel the same way. I just dislike JS and going from ActionScript to
 JavaScript is a step back.. a big one.
 If you know Java, you're in luck 'cos with GWT you can just write Java
 apps and they get compiled to JS (with html/css) and you
 still get to use Maven/Spring/Hibernate and do all the OOP stuff and
 whatnot. You don't have to look at javascript at all, let alone
 write a single line of it !
 As I mentioned earlier, if FlashBuilder would do something similar,
 I'd be all over it.
 And it can be done, haXe already does that.

 Dear FlexCoders,

 Is there an easy way to run a detection script to detect if Flash Player is
 installed on a browser?

 I have tried numerous javascripts / vbscripts / etc but most of them does
 not seem to work in my case.

 I also tried this site:
 http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/future_detection.html to
 no avail.

 The problem is that I have different set of users who have their own
 preferences on which browser to use. Some uses IE, others FF and the
 others, Chrome.

 There are times that my compiled and embedded SWF object won't show in some
 of these browsers (although I have seemed to notice that they are more
 likely to fail in IE).

 Is there a much simpler method where on the loading of page, a script will
 be executed and if the Flash version is not the latest one, provide the user
 with the facility to download latest version and install?

 Appreciate your inputs. Thanks.

 Angelo

 As you start scrolling the list figures out that there are more and adjusts

 What I don't understand is the data group next to it works exactly how I

 But why would you want to use this class anyway? There's zero benefits of

problem with IE8
it seems IE8 can load a SWF7 but can't reload it!. He workaround the problem
making
a Flash 8 wrapper for the SWF7.

Well, I think this shows up the great quality of IE8. Think that your
problem could be
IE8 working in the classic microsoft's way...

Re: [flexcoders] ADG editable cells dataprovider

2008-08-06 Thread Carlos Rovira
The only one approach to that problem is to fill the dataprovider with data.
That's the way list components works. I found the same problem and I had to
go that way

2008/8/5 Josh Millstein [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   I have a ADG with a dataprovider that is set dynamically. I would like
 to
 be able to edit any of the cells in the datagrid but right now I can only
 edit cells that have information in them from the dataprovider. Problem is
 that when someone starts using my app there is no info in the dataprovider
 therefore not allowing me to click in the cells. I have the adg editable =
 true the colums editable = true , I put in some blank objects in the
 dataprovider, which is a half ass fix that is not going to work for other
 reasons. Does anybody know what I can do here to fix the issue?

 Thanks

Re: [flexcoders] Performance Issues with AdvancedDataGrid

2008-08-01 Thread Carlos Rovira
I was this days extending the component to do the same Excel funcionality.
I conclude that using itemRenderers that extends UIComponent ends
downgrading
the performance of the grid. So I recomend to extend
AdvancedDataGridItemRenderer
although probably you'll have to sacrifice all the displayobject things you
would like to do.

Anyway, although ADG is a great component and makes easy to go the Excel
way, many
times is very hard to get with the right idea in order to get a cool
performance.

2008/8/1 Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   I have an application based on a AdvancedDataGrid control that makes
 use of custom editors and renders to in many ways resemble Excel.
 Problem I am having is that if the user begins rapidly entering data
 the application will occasionally miss keyboard entry.

 Our observation is that in the event sequencing the itemeditor is
 still receiving key press entry after the endItemEvent.

 Has anyone encountered similar behavior with the AdvancedDataGrid, or
 have suggestions for review?

 Thanks

Re: [flexcoders] Figuring out what was clicked in AdvancedDataGrid

2008-07-25 Thread Carlos Rovira
I use this code with an ArrayCollection dataProvider.
I'm using multiple cell selection as well, but you can customize as you
need:

var ac:ArrayCollection = dataProvider as ArrayCollection;

 for(var i:Number = 0; i  selectedCells.length; i++) {
var cell:Object = selectedCells[i];
var data:Object = ac.getItemAt(cell.rowIndex);
var dataField:String = columns[cell.columnIndex].dataField;

data[dataField] = ;
ac.itemUpdated(data, dataField);
}

aside, selectedIndex and selectedColumnIndex should give you the indices you
need to retrieve a itemRenderer or a datapovider's object

2008/7/25 whatabrain [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

   How can you tell which item in the dataProvider was clicked in an
 AdvancedDataGrid, when using HierarchicalData as the dataProvider?

 I tried using the typical DataGrid method, of saving off the item index
 in itemRollOver, and using it to determine the index of the clicked
 item. However, with AdvancedDataGrid, the row index isn't particularly
 relevant. Or is there some way to convert the row index to the actual
 clicked item in the dataProvider?

Re: [flexcoders] Migration Issues from Flex 2 into Flex 3 Beta 2

2008-01-22 Thread Carlos Rovira
For app size use Export Release Version

2008/1/22, Romeo Obane [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

   Greetings!

 Yesterday, I integrated my flex application from Flex 2 to Flex 3 Beta 2,
 I've seen some strange
 changes, here are the following:

 * My Flex Application size before is around 500k, but now 986k.

 * In my library which uses Cairngorm:

  It finds the CairngormMessages.properties,

  I've found a temporary Solution and still knowing the real issues:
 http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Talk:Cairngorm

   - I added in the source folder of library
 locale\en_US\CairngormMessages.properties file

   - And I added to library compiler arguments
 -locale en_US -source-path=locale/{locale}
 -allow-source-path-overlap=true

 I will appreciate any small or big ideas to this kind of issues especially in
 reducing my flex application size.

 Thanks,
 Romeo

 I am working on a project in Flex 2, but I need some of the new
 functionality of Flex 3 in one
 view. (The app is already in use by the client and they are not
 comfortable moving the entire
 app to Flex 3 while it is in Beta.) My thought is to create the view as a
 Flex 3 application and
 use the SWFLoader to load the swf into the current Flex 2 project. I will
 need to set variables
 and call methods of the loaded Flex 3 application. There is no problem
 doing this Flex 2 to
 Flex 2, but I just want to know if anyone has mixed versions successfully.

 Has anyone done this? Any reason why it should or shouldn't work that I
 need to consider
 before giving it a try?

Re: [flexcoders] Flex 3 + LiveCycle: Is debugging Java possible?

We are using eclipse wtp with tomcat and we can debug Flex, java or both at
once

2007/11/21, jamiebadman [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

   Hi,

 Our project is a Flex 3 + LiveCycle 2.5 application and is all built
 under a single project - ie the Flex and Java are contained within a
 single project and can be built entirely from there.

 Nice... except for when we want to debug the Java code (which so far
 has not been necessary since it's been very simple). We can't figure
 out how to do this. There are articles by Farata and others on how
 this can be done but these seem to require the Java in a separate
 project in Eclipse.

 Has anyone managed to accomplish what we're trying to do - and if so,
 would you mind sharing the steps required?

 We're currently using JBoss but if we need to switch to Tomcat,
 Weblogic or JRun for the purposes of debugging this is not a problem.

 Thanks,

 Jamie.

[flexcoders] DataServices application failing to communicate through SSL

2007-11-15 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi,

We have an app built with LCDS that must use SSL. Until now it works
properly through HTTP, but as I switch to SSL there's no communication with
the server

In services-config we have the following channel definition (AMF comet
polling ):

channel-definition id=my-secure-client-polling-amf class=
mx.messaging.channels.SecureAMFChannel
endpoint
url=https://{server.name}:{server.port}/{context.root}/messagebroker/clientamfsecurepolling;
class=flex.messaging.endpoints.SecureAMFEndpoint/
properties
!--HTTPS requests on some browsers do not work when pragma
no-cache are set--
add-no-cache-headersfalse/add-no-cache-headers
polling-enabledtrue/polling-enabled
polling-interval-millis0/polling-interval-millis
wait-interval-millis-1/wait-interval-millis
max-waiting-poll-requests5/max-waiting-poll-requests
/properties
/channel-definition

then in default-channels:

default-channels
channel ref=my-secure-flexarq-polling-amf/
/default-channels

Again in remoting and datamanagment config files:

default-channels
channel ref=my-secure-flexarq-polling-amf/
/default-channels

So, someone could tell me if I need something more to configure to go
through SSL?

Note: (I create my .keystore and configure the https and port in my tomcat
server so I assume all this stuff is ok. as I enter through https I must to
validate the certificate. The problem starts as I try to poll data from my
flex client interface)

Thanks in advance

Carlos

 *Subject:* RE: [flexcoders] FDS and Paging

 By default, DS will just page from the client to the server, not from the
 server to the database. I'd expect it to call fill once, but then the
 client fetches the data in pages.

 Starting in LC DS 2.5, we added a mechanism to page directly to the
 database. Currently it is limited in that you must set
 autoSyncEnabled=false for it to work before you call fill (though we hope to
 fix that limitation in the next release).

 To use this you implement the variant of the fill method which takes the
 start and count methods:

 Collection fill(List fillParameters, int startIndex, int
 numberOfRows);

 You also must override the useFillPage method and have it return true
 for that set of fill parameters.

 There are two options for determining the size of the collection that the
 client sees. It will call your assembler's count method with the same fill
 parameters. If that returns -1, it goes into a dynamic sizing mode where it
 makes the size of the collection on the client pageSize+1 items, then when
 that one missing item is fetched it ups the size to pageSize+pageSize+1,
 etc. until it hits the end.

 By default when you sort in the data grid (or apply any filters) it will
 page in all items automatically since the default behavior is to sort on the
 client. This can be inefficient so you might want to add the sort criteria
 to the fill parameters. You can then override the sort behavior in the data
 grid to call fill again rather than paging all of the items.

 Here is the situation:

 I have a DataGrid that display a list of managed objects – using DFS and
 the Assembler strategy.

 The number of objects is very large and is time consuming to load.

 I would want to use the paging feature to deal with this situation.

 I enabled the paging option in the destination descriptor, but the
 behavior does not change.

 The client just calls my assembler fill method always in the same way.

 Did I miss some point?

 What happens with the paging feature and the sort feature of the Datagrid?

 Any help is welcomed.

You can use scope tag in any of your destinations to set it to

You have FlexSession as well that you can use to manage session related

Re: [flexcoders] Flex Component still active, even know TitleWindow it resides in, is deleted -

Hi Alex,

I'm interested as well in the solution. My application have multiple window

Maybe the problem are the bindings to the model, but...how to clear bindings
created in MXML with {} notation?

Any light on this would be very appreciated

Thanks in advance.

   Okay, that helps explain things a tad -

If this was yourself in this predicament, how would you go about handling
this problem?

I am just curious how I can force a Garbage Collection to take place, in
order to remove this component from memory (and more important, to make it
stop responding to my model changes - as this is happening on a very regular
basis)

Also, what would be the proper way to create a weak reference to my
ApplicationModel, so that the corresponding resources get released, whenever
the TitleWindow container gets blown away?

Thanks in advance for your help - this is a topic that I've been needing
to dive into for quite some time, and this would be a perfect opportunity to
address everything.

 You can't really blow things away in AS3 (or Java). You kill all
references to them and they go away when garbage collected. If you are
listening to the app model, it means the app model has a reference to the
event listener and thus it won't go away. Use weak references or clean up
when removed from the display list.

Hello All,

I have a WEIRD problem, and I am hoping you can all shed some light on
this.

I have a Popup TitleWindow which serves the purpose of displaying
details from a Master Grid. Among all the other controls housed within
the TitleWindow, I am using the ObserveValue Component, which monitors
a Boolean Value residing in my ApplicationModel.

Once the user is finished looking at the Details, they must close the
Window. I am using the PopUpManager.removePopUp() method of closing the
TitleWindow, which should in essence, blow away the TitleWindow itself,
in addition to all the Controls that reside within it.

Even know the TitleWindow gets closed, I am still getting Trace Messages
outputted to my custom Debug Window (which demonstrates the fact, that
my ObserveValue Component is still active functioning). A quick note,
I am tracing the output so that I can monitor my variables during
development of my app.

How is this possible??

I must get to the bottom of this ASAP, as this is causing some problems
with the rest of my application.

Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way.

Mike

Re: [flexcoders] Prana: IoC container for AS3

2007-04-20 Thread Carlos Rovira

I think avoiding repeated code would a great advance if we use an IoC
container that allows us only create the different code and inyect the
shared functionality. Another great thing is AOP that would be a great thing
since many different objects must face equal behaviour and we could do this
as as aspect and inyect it by configuration.
Maybe the problem is to think about how we must to adapt this kind of
functionality to AS3 and Flex and not simply copy from the java/spring world
to Flex.
But for me is clear that many improvements in the upcoming months could be
done with frameworks like Pranaq

2007/4/20, Brian Lesser [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  Hi Carlos, et al,

I have a question regarding the need for an ioc container for Flex as
opposed to a pure AS3 or Flash project. Flex already provides a
hierarchy of containers that contain controls and service proxies. The
containers are usually responsible for setting the dependencies between
controls and proxies. Setting dependencies can be done with databinding,
simple assignment, or by setting up listeners. This is a very different
situation from what a Java developer faces without an IOC container when
writing servlets or JSP pages. In fact in Flex the built in visual state
mechanism means we can set up dependencies and tear them down when
states are entered and left. So, here's my question: what would an IOC
container add that Flex doesn't provide and how would it improve our
work or what we could do? Are you primarily thinking about aspects?

Yours truly,

Hi Brian,

I think you are referrin to Christophe and his project Prana, although I'd
want to contribute if I can :)

2007/4/20, Brian Lesser [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  Thanks Carlos,
I'll be interested to see what you come up with. Right now I'm
experimenting with the best way to use static methods to handle
cross-cutting security concerns within custom components. For example a
combo box may only be able to show certain options to a user based on
the user's role. The combo starts off with all the options available but
must filter them before displaying them. To do that it calls a static
method of a RoleFilter class. I'm not sure if that's the best way to go
about it though. Here's the script from within a custom combo box as an
example:

mx:Script
![CDATA[

import com.somecompany.security.RoleFilter;

private function init():void{
filterData();
}

public function filterData():void{
dataProvider =
RoleFilter.filterArrayCollection(unfilteredCollection);
}

]]

Note: unfilteredCollection is just an ArrayCollection of objects.

Now, that's not a lot of code, but what bothers me is that I'd rather my
custom combo box not know anything about my RoleFilter class. In fact
I'd prefer it not know anything about filters at all. So, even though
this works fine, I'm trying to come up with something more elegant. So
far having the combo box's container set this up hasn't looked right
either. So again, I'm interested to see what you end up with.

 I think avoiding repeated code would a great advance if we use an IoC

 this
 as as aspect and inyect it by configuration.
 Maybe the problem is to think about how we must to adapt this kind of
 functionality to AS3 and Flex and not simply copy from the java/spring
 world
 to Flex.
 But for me is clear that many improvements in the upcoming months
 could be
 done with frameworks like Pranaq

 2007/4/20, Brian Lesser [EMAIL PROTECTED] blesser%40ryerson.ca:

 Hi Carlos, et al,

 I have a question regarding the need for an ioc container for Flex as
 opposed to a pure AS3 or Flash project. Flex already provides a
 hierarchy of containers that contain controls and service proxies. The
 containers are usually responsible for setting the dependencies between
 controls and proxies. Setting dependencies can be done with
databinding,
 simple assignment, or by setting up listeners. This is a very different
 situation from what a Java developer faces without an IOC container
when
 writing servlets or JSP pages. In fact in Flex the built in visual
state
 mechanism means we can set up dependencies and tear them down when
 states are entered and left. So, here's my question: what would an IOC
 container add that Flex doesn't provide and how would it improve our
 work or what we could do? Are you primarily thinking about aspects?

 Yours truly,
 -Brian

Re: [flexcoders] Will Microsoft's new Silverlight Player Kill our beloved Flex ?

2007-04-17 Thread Carlos Rovira

A coworked show me an example like the Flex Book, and looks very bad to me,
it seems to be very heavy (I ear about 70Mb!), the interactivity not as
smooth as ely's Flex book, so I'll continue with our beloved flash/flex
technology. IMHO Microsoft will have to bring much more to the table in
order to gain aceptance and get Flash developers in its platform, nowadays I
think there's no competition.

  I got it working to some extent for Camino (mozilla) on mac.
By no means have i thoroughly tested it yet though.

I couldn't imagine developing for it yet though.

I need a platform that will guarantee me results.
10 years of Flash player deployment is a strong reason why i'll hold off
for a while.

Plus personally i've never been a fan of ms dev tools.

With LCDS 2.5 beta 2 you should:

1.- upgrade all your jars and related files to LCDS2.5b2
2.- unzip the flex_sdk_2.zip in resources (in your installation of LCDS2.5b2
)
3.- upgrade your Flex SDK 2 folder with the before mentioned zip
4.- upgrade your lib folder in

with the lib folder inside the flex_sdk_2.zip
plus flex-compiler-oem.jar

5.- recompile your swfs and go

  The application is fetch hibernate managed hierarchies when this

I know Jeff V. made lots of changes to the Hibernate Assembler code in

I double checked that all the jars, etc are pointed to the 2.5b2
version.

[flexcoders] creationPolicy does not work on popups?

2007-04-10 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi,

I'm facing a weird behaviour with creationPolicy in containers. I use the
default creationPolicy to auto and have a component with a TabNavigator with
this creation policy. If the instance of this component is created as usual
all works fine. The problem shows as I turn this component into a
TitleWindow and pops it with popup manager. In this new incarnation, the
component fires the creationComplete event in other tabs not selected (not
instantiated).

This is a known effect of using a component in a popup manager?. I'm making
test and this problem only shows when change from default mxml instantiation
to a popup manager instantiation, so or this is a bug, or is something
expected.

Thanks Igor,

I tried this, but creationComplete executes as well...really weird :?
But if I instantiated the component directly the creationComplete does not
exectute, so I think this is due to the component beign a popup...

Thanks for the response :)

Did you used to popUp this new titlewindow using as IFlexDisplayObject

I'm not sure but this will works even if you have using it as on the fly

for example

var  popMeUp:IFlexDisplayObject  =  mx.managers.popUpManager.createPopUp
(comCarlosTitleWin,this);

it will works smooth.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: pushing a database update/data management services

2007-04-09 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi Steve,

I was trying the same yesterday without no results. I was trying to do a
file upload to a data base. I send the file with some params and want to
createa item using the assembler createItem method. This was ok, but the
flex client does not refresh, so I was trying the same as you: handle it
with DataServiceTransaction.refreshFill, but no results now.

Maybe someone at adobe could tell us something.

Best,

it needs to refresh it's fills. Am I going to have to have both coldfusion

am not the only one wanting to do this.

I should add that this is for coldfusion standard and not enterprise so I
cannot have a solution revolving around event gateways.

TIA

 Has anyone attempted this with coldfusion? Can I instantiate that java
 class in some coldfusion code and it link with the Flex server instance?

 I'm hoping that I can call DataServiceTransaction.refreshfill() and all
 the client fills will refresh. Possible?

 If someone could tell me if this is possible or a dead end would be much

Re: [flexcoders] What is the correct way to detect activation of a Canvas in a ViewStack?

2007-03-25 Thread Carlos Rovira

Have you seen processDescriptors property? Check the docs for that one,
maybe is what you are lookinf for

2007/3/24, Tim Walling [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  You could try setting up a show event listener to trigger your
initialization code. Something like this:

mx:ViewStack
mx:Canvas show=handleShowEvent()/
/mx:ViewStack

Whenever the ViewStack makes the canvas the visible/active one, the show
event would fire.

or if your Canvas is an mxml component, it could handle the show event
internally:

mx:ViewStack
view:MyCanvas/
/mx:ViewStack

MyCanvas.mxml
mx:Canvas show=handleShowEvent()
mx:Script
private function handleShowEvent(event:FlexEvent):void
{
// call initialize code
}
/mx:Script
/mx:Canvas

Then each of your components in the ViewStack would manage their
respective show events.

I am developing my first FDS application. It's small, and basically just
a
big form comprised of about 75 fields; radio groups, comboboxes, text
inputs, etc.

Each time a new form is submitted it creates one row in a large table.
The
form can be retreived and edited later, which just updates the values in

that existing row.

Since two or three people can have the same form (record) open at the
same
time, I would like to use FDS to manage the data and stop them from
overwriting each other when they click save but... the FDS
documentation
and tutorials state in several places that you can only manage
ArrayCollections of objects. Problem is that in my case I couldn't
possibly
pull over 3000 records into an ArrayCollection, it would be too big and
slow.

Is there a way to retreive and manage a single custom object containing
a
single form/record instead of an entire ArrayCollection of objects? Any
examples or tutorials out there showing how to do this? Could I possibly

use some function to identify select a single record, and then pull
that
one record over into an ArrayCollection that FDS would manage? That
seems a
little cumbersome.

[flexcoders] List based components, FDS and UID bug

2007-03-07 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi,

There's a problem in list based components (List, Tree, Datagrid,..). When
we retrieve the same managed object from FDS and have more than one row, FDS
set the same UID for those diferent rows, so a list based component shows a
bad behaviour.

For example, in a Tree if we open a node, other nodes representing the same
node open and childrens shows a lot of problems (like rollOver errors,...).
That's due to the same object sharing the same UID.

As this is a problem with UIDs open since early betas in Flex 2, maybe this
could be due to some known workaround that allows retrieve the same object
with diferents UIDsAnyone knows some workaround to solve this bug in
list components?

I try to insert a random number in the server, but this is not the
solution...maybe if I assign the UID in the server could solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

[flexcoders] ArrayCollection contains not working

2007-02-17 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi,

I've been trying to filter an ArrayCollection with the objects that not
exist in another ArrayCollection. I use the contains method, but it seems
that does not work.
In the following thread seems that others are having the same problem with
XMLListCollectionView:

http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders@yahoogroups.com/msg55025.html

Someone knows if contains method really works? maybe we are using in a wrong
way?

Here is my filter:

private function myFilter(item:Object):Boolean {
   if(model.myac.contains(item))
   return false;
   else
   return true;
   }

And I use the following implementation of ICollectionView

mx:ListCollectionView
   id=mylcv
   list={model.myac2}
   filterFunction=myFilter/

Something wrong here?

Thanks.

[flexcoders] FDS commitRequired and 2 way binding

2007-02-08 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi,

I was having some problems with the commitRequired property in the
dataservice component when use 2 way binding.

All works well until you have nested items. If you have a UserVO and an
AddressVO inside the user. For example:

mx:TextInput id=name_address text={
model.selectedUser.address.name_address}/
mx:Binding source=name_address.text destination=
model.selectedUser.address.name_address/

Would make the commitRequired change from false to true as you expect.
BUT, if it never change again to false if you turn back name_address to
the old value.
If you begin with name_address = abc and you change to abcd then all is
ok (commitRequired = true). Now if you change back to abc, commitRequired
should change again to false since there's no changes pending.

This is due to the fact that we have a nested object and databinding needs
to know about a full object change (assign a new address object to the
property... with plain properties all works well.

Someone is using some technique to solve this problem?

Ok,

I solve it handling the icon in the parent class:

public function ButtonPanelClass():void {
   addEventListener(FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE,
creationCompleteHandler);
   }

   private function creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void {
   nuevo_btn.setStyle(icon, EmbeddedAssets.nuevo_icono);
  }

Hope this help someone trying the same

[flexcoders] FDS2 stuck when resultset is too large

2007-02-06 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi,

One of the teams here working on a large FDS2 application found a strange
problem. When the resultset retrieved from FDS2 pass a number of rows the
dataservice hangs. It always happens when the rows pass a fixed limit.

It seems like FDS waits for a new request and if you throw a new request
just after the large-row-request (another fill), the first one ends without
problem.

Anyone could bring some explanation about this issue?.

Thanks.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex2 Metadata / Compiler Options Question

compiler does not
know anything about the metadata in the superclass...I didnp't have time to

 I'll try to keep this brief and clear, bear with me and please request
 additional information if it would help. We came across a situation
 in a very large Flex2 application where we wanted to know the types of
 items inside of collections at runtime. I can provide more details if
 desired, but in short we are doing a lot of automatic detection of
 object and property types to make a running locally on xml version
 of the product work with very little pain and very little extra
 configuration.

 In Java 1.5, you can specify these types like this:

 ListContactVO foo;

 In Flex2, if you have something like this:

 var foo : ArrayCollection;

 There is obviously no way of discovering at runtime, by reading the
 class definition, what types of objects are meant to be in that
 ArrayCollection.

 So we took advantage of the metadata construct in Flex2 to create a
 sort of annotation, which would make the Flex2 example look like this:

 [Collection(type=ContactVO)]
 var foo : ArrayCollection;

 Now by reading the metadata of the property foo, we are able to
 determine at runtime both that foo is an ArrayCollection, and that it
 is meant to contain ContactVO object instances. This doesn't have the
 Java benefit of actually enforcing the fact that only ContactVOs are
 in the collection, but it at least allows us to make very useful
 convention-based assumptions.

 This is a pretty powerful option in my opinion, unfortunately Flex2
 blindly throws out all metadata it doesn't understand. Through some
 google code searching, we were able to discover an obscure compiler
 option that looks like this:

 -keep-as3-metadata+=Collection

 This option would then make it such that Flex does not throw out
 [Collection] metadata.

 The problem is, this compiler option only works in DEBUG mode. In
 debug mode all of our code affected by this works beautifully and
 without fault (and would probably be a very useful tool to provide to
 the community). In RUN mode, it fails miserably. In short, Flex2 is
 ignoring these extra compiler options when not in DEBUG mode. We are
 no longer able to see the [Collection] metadata.

 Does anyone have any idea for working around this? We are using ANT
 for our builds, and I can guarantee that the -keep-as3-metadata
 compiler option is being used identically in all cases. It simply
 gets ignored in RUN mode, and Flex2 goes back to throwing out all
 metadata it doesn't understand.

myClass.errorString = ;

If you call validateProperties before clearing the errorString property,

only one problem is with exceptions. When an toplink throws an exception we
have huge stack trace and FDS2 ends with a channel disconnected error.
This seems to be an error with toplink essentials.

So with hibernate we have the id problems and with toplink the exception
problemvery frustrating :(

the assembler and override the createItem method. If the id is 0 in that

an Integer rather than an int so this is possible.

with id=0 (unsaved-value problem)

Hi,

I'm switching from Toplink to Hibernate using JPA/EJB3 and Annotations.
I'm facing a problem with this change due to the fact that when I try to
persist new entities Hibernate throws a PersistenceObjectException:
Detached entity passed to persist. Hibernate expects new entities with ID =
NULL and my new entities reach the hibernate layer with ID = 0.

If I were using hibernate xml config files (hbm.xml) I could use
unsaved-value = 0 (for each entity), but I'm using Annotations and there's
no unsaved-value annotation to use.

So, anyone reach this problem? How could I change the default
configuration in Hibernate so new entities with ID = 0 will be considered as
the default.

Or maybe there's a way in FDS2 to configure default value to null?

Thanks for any light on this :)

Re: [flexcoders] [FDS2+Spring/Hibernate] VOs reaching the backend with id=0 (unsaved-value problem)

2007-01-20 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi Vineet,

I ' m using the following:

VOs in AS3  - public var id:Number;

VOs in Java - protected Integer id;

I'm using Oracle 9i as my RDBMS...but I think this shouldn't be the problem
as I'm using JPA/EJB3
and could change from one to another with four lines of configuration. The
problem is in FDS2 and the persistence layer.

btw, the glue between FDS2 and Hibernate is Spring.

Are you using primitive int data-type by any chance? If so then change it
to Integer.
Which RDBMS are you using?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Data and Hibernate issue (identity mapping)

2007-01-19 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi Ripe,

I'm facing another problem with IDs and Hiberntate.

By default Hibernate expects a id = null in order to think that is a new
entity, but FDS changes the ID to 0 when converts the object from client
side (flash) to java.

could you tell me if you get your ids set to 0?

I'm trying to configure Hibernate so the default value will be 0 but I'm not
be able to do it until now :(

On 1/17/07, ripe101 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  I found the issue that caused my problem. Replying to my own post
for anyone dealing with this in the future.

My setter method for the id property was defined as private. This
is recommended in Hibernate docs for id type fields:

see
http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/v3/reference/en/html/tutorial.html#t
utorial-firstapp

However, we usually don't manipulate the identity of an object,
hence the setter method should be private.

Apparently even though I was using only the getter method in my mxml,
Flex didn't like the setter method being inaccessable. So the
property was never returned.

Took a few days to track this down, so hopefully this will help
someone else out.

cheers

Thanks Dmitry,

I'm already using those methods. The problem is that I want to use a Button

Hope this is more clear.

Use this methods to check are you already at the end or at the start of
collection
to move use moveNext() and movePrevious(). after checking

Re: [flexcoders] Spring / FDS Integration :: How to assign fill-method and asyn-method when use SpringFactory?

Sorry Oliver,

I couldn't found any solution to this problem. Hope Jeff Vroom or Christophe
Coenraets could throw some light on this since Spring Integration with FDS
is a must for a huge amount of people out there. Today Spring is the
decoupling framework number one in enterprise java solutions and have a good
integration with FDS would many IT departments give FDS a try.

I'm using Spring without that configuration part using the Assembler API and
for now I can follow on,but it's a little weird that we can't use the
assembler in the right way and use the server xml fragment part.

Adobe, please, put an eye on this...I think full FDS/Spring integration is
really important for the Flex success! :)
